was a time when i wasn't sure but you set my mind at ease December 23, 2025 @ariadne A day off. It seemed like such a rarity these days for James, but with the holidays coming up, they allowed him time off to spend with his family and, more importantly, rest. He’d been working hard since he’d completed his training over the summer and really to keep his mind occupied. It wasn’t intentional, and he supposed it began when he was around seventeen. Unknowingly pushing people away while standing right next to them and smiling, as if everything was okay. Maybe he’d just gotten used to it by now, but occasionally it was brought to his attention, but in his mind, he had seen worse from coworkers in the different Law Enforcement departments, so he felt he was just fine. Still, there was that Christmas party the following day that he supposed he would attend as well. The idea of a party where one was dressed up among such notable folks didn’t make James grumble and complain as it did some folks.
He walked into the pub ruffling his hair as he loosened his scarf and found a table with room for two. Fortunately, their schedules had allowed them both some time to spend together. James had been looking forward to it. There was something about all this time, her consistent presence at his side even when the world seemed to have gone upside down that he felt immensely grateful for and comforted at the same time. James had never considered a person’s name. Though it might make them stand out to him, he felt it was a new generation, and new chances should be given. It was what his father would have done as well, well, for the most part, he figured. Had he not kept an open mind. James removed his coat and placed it on the back of his chair, it was far warmer in here than it had been outside, and he picked up what was a small menu from the table to skim the selections. Truthfully, he wasn’t sure if he was hungry, but it wasn’t too early for an ale since it was late afternoon. Or maybe he’d just wait for Ariadne to arrive to order.
He focused on the selection, his expression showing a great concentration until he heard a voice that he immediately smiled.

Ariadne and James’ schedules had been pretty much polar opposites for quite some time now, so she was relieved to hear from him and to find a time where both of their schedules worked. It appeared that during the quarantine, a lot of babies were made, and Ariadne was busier than ever at the hospital. Still, she loved bringing these children into the world and seeing the look on the overjoyed parents faces. She had taken Casimir’s advice, and insisted on being called Healer Lestrange; it had caused a few double takes, as she had expected, but after their first appointment with her, it went relatively smoothly. She didn’t know how to reach Cas, but she hoped he would have a semblance of pride for the steps she was taking.
On the day she was scheduled to meet James, Ariadne debated for quite a bit about what to wear. She finally selected a royal blue sweater dress with black boots, her long black coat keeping her warm as she hurried down the road to the pub they were meeting at. A few flakes of snow had begun to fall as she stepped inside, quickly melting into her blonde hair as she removed her coat, immensely glad for the warmth of the interior. She spotted James almost immediately - for Ariadne he was hard to miss - and she smiled. “James,” she called in her soft voice, gliding her way over to the table he was seated at and taking her seat across from him. “Fancy meeting you here,” she joked with a laugh.

was a time when i wasn't sure but you set my mind at ease December 23, 2025 @ariadne James grinned, his eyes gleaming. It had been an unlikely match in terms of who they were and their family backgrounds. If one could take this moment and show it to those fighting so many years ago, it would be unbelievable. A Potter and a Lestrange, but it wasn’t something that James had fallen into. His father and taught them better than that. People could change, and it was worth giving them a chance. James had met Ariadne, and despite his incredibly extroverted personality and her introverted one, they became friends. She was nothing like the stories he had been told growing up of Bellatrix and Rodolphus. She was very much her own person as much as James was his own outside of his father’s shadow.
But through the past few years, the events that happened at school and events afterward. Their chosen occupations kept them busy, and James had opted to continue to live in his family home rather than moving into his own flat as many of his classmates had after graduation. James had chosen Law Enforcement while Ariadne had chosen healing, they both wanted to help people, and it was that kindness he had fallen for—her desire to help and do good despite what others may think or assume. In the end, one could only just act on their intent and hope that people saw it. He smiled back warmly, putting the menu down. ”Indeed, do you come here often?” He responded, he was happy to see her. Life had just kept them so busy.
”How has work been?” He asked, glancing at the menu again and mentally deciding an ale would be nice, but now she could take a look at the selection if she wished. Her work wasn’t a field that James had ever considered going into, but he saw the work Healers did and were grateful for them. In his field, he had seen many of his colleagues injured, though he’d managed to avoid it himself for now. A topic he was sure she didn't prefer to think about, even if James just figured it was just the reality one couldn't ignore.

Ariande laughed, her nose wrinkling up as it did when she genuinely found something amusing. James had that effect on her; he always knew how to lift her spirits. Even if it was just a crooked smile her way, it made her feel better. As though she was valued as a person. “Oh you know, it all depends on who’s here. Sometimes I’ll peep in and see no one of interest and keep going about my day,” she teased. Quickly looking at the menu, Ariadne quickly decided on a nice glass of Chardonnay and glanced up at James, wondering if he’d order an ale per usual.
“Oh it’s been wonderful!” Ariadne told him enthusiastically, even though for anyone else it would be an ice breaker type question. James was different though; she knew he was genuinely interested in how her work was going. Their passions may have taken them in different directions, but neither of them would ever try to downplay the others job. That was simply not their style. “I took the advice of a new friend and started using Healer Lestrange instead of going by Healer Ariadne. I realized that I wasn’t doing myself any justice by hiding who my family is, and I know that I can make the name Lestrange into at least a more...neutral. Or at the VERY least, they won’t think of me as Lestrange first, Healer second. It’s taken a few of my patients aback, but I started with the ones I’ve been working with since they found out about their pregnancy, and sort of already knew my surname. It’ll take time, but I’m done living under my familys’ shadow. I am a good person and the world will hopefully recognize that. Or at least, Saint Mungo’s will,” she quieted down, knowing it was very unusual for her to go on a rant like the one she just did. Again, it was just the way she and James were around each other; Ariadne didn’t feel like she needed to put up a front with him.
“The Smith triplets are doing well though! Born last week; I think their mum was ready for them to get out of her,” Ariadne added with a chuckle. She had told James about the mother of four kids already expecting triplets; that would make them seven, just like the Weasley clan his own mother hailed from. “Perhaps Molly can share some of her wisdom with her,” she joked. Their drinks came and Ariadne held up her glass. “To making time,” she toasted, then as she took a sip her expression grew serious. “How are you? How is work and your...well, you know.” His father. Ariadne dared not say his name out loud; who knew who could be listening in on their conversation.

was a time when i wasn't sure but you set my mind at ease December 23, 2025 @ariadne James may have been a Potter by name, but he was also a Weasley. Humor and having a good time ran in his blood and had always been a central part of his personality. And with all that James had been through and seen the past few years, he relied on that to stay afloat. When he joined the Ministry, he had seen some of the very senior members of Law Enforcement and how jaded they appeared and tired, no humor at all. She laughed at his comment, and he smiled in return. It was always his goal to see her smile. Her experience the past few years had been different than his own but not the greatest, so the least he could do was not make it worse. ”Good to know I’m interesting enough to have caught your attention.” He joked and smiled but in a very self-satisfied way.
Glancing at the menu once more, he opted for an ale. It wasn’t often he had a day off these days, let alone at the same time as his girlfriend. They both ordered drinks to start, and Ariadne began to recount how work had been going. James couldn’t help but look at her with a soft expression. While she had been happy walking into the pub to meet him—she lit up when she spoke about her work. He could see her passion for her work but also her confidence. She’d found her calling in Healing just as he had found his with his own career. ”Oh? Who gave you that advice?” He wondered. It was good advice, and he knew it would be good for her confidence and hopefully would help any anxiety about her name. Despite having a famous one himself, Potter elicited a different reaction than Lestrange did—so it wasn’t something James could ever pretend to understand even if he had foolishly tried when he was younger.
James nodded in agreement. A smile had crept up onto his face at some point when she was speaking. ”The world will recognize it, love. Your work speaks for itself.” He spoke encouragingly. How much longer would his generation have to pay for the sins of their predecessors? For the most part, everybody James knew and had met who had family connections to the last generation of Death Eaters wished for a better world, and he trusted his father’s opinion on most of them. ”And you are a lovely person.” He added, pausing a quick moment. ”…most days.” He joked, with a playful expression and a wink. He’d like to think that it wasn’t just that he looked for the best in people, but she was a good person with good intentions. Ariadne continued with her work, recounting the status of a set of triplets she had previously mentioned—though he had to dig a bit in the back of his brain to recount that memory he did remember. ”Oh right, that’s….seven children?” He tried to recall what she had told him before.
He chuckled when she brought up his grandmother. The Weasley matriarch knew how to handle a large family, and now with the number of grandchildren she had, it was a wonder she hadn’t started asking for great-grandchildren yet. ”My grandmother would love that, though triplets…” James wasn’t sure what triplets would be like, seven children were one thing, but there were age differences still. Plus, he thought about what his grandmother might assume if Ariadne began asking her questions about childcare, considering she and James had been together for a few years. James held his ale and toasted, his mug clinking lightly with Ariadne’s wine glass. ”To making time.” He repeated as he took a drink and considered her next question. Placing his mug back on the table he paused as his smile seemed to slowly fade. ”Work is busy, I was surprised I had two consecutive days off. Lily is home from school, so I visited with her yesterday.” He paused, not sure what he thought about the next part of the question. Even without a name, he knew what she meant. ”Uh—well….he’s trying. And I’m trying.” James looked away in thought. That year had been difficult between his father disappearing, one of his closest friends taking off, and then they had taken a break. It had been a hard road.

Ariadne smiled at James’ question. “Cas Karkaroff, I met him through Madam MacMillian. She thought it would be a good idea to meet because of our...surnames causing a bit of a stir in the UK,” she explained. Though she knew Lestrange was far more reviled than Karkaroff, Cas and his sister still dealt with the looks and whispers Ariadne did. With her brother more than likely following somewhat in their parents footsteps, and Andy being up to Merlin knows what and having her last name changed to Longbottom, Ariadne was the sole Lestrange sibling trying to make the Lestrange name less of a bad taste in peoples mouths. “He said we are so much more than our destinies, and I’ve really taken that to heart. I know I was suspected of so much at Hogwarts, but I can’t hide behind the fact that my parents were...well, evil,” she added, taking a sip of her drink.
“Your grandmother would welcome anyone into their family, related by blood or not,” Ariadne reminded him with a smile. Indeed, she knew James’ own father had been ‘unofficially’ adopted by the Weasleys during his school years, and Molly had always been kind to her. She had been extremely nervous to meet the Weasley matriarch, particularly because Molly had killed her Aunt Bellatrix. But, and she knew she had James to thank for this, she had been an absolute delight.
Ariadne’s smile faded a little as the conversation turned to his father. She knew how hard it had been for James especially when his father had disappeared, and then to just reappear and open up a pub? It was a tough adjustment, especially with the death of his Aunt Hermione. She reached over the table and took his hand in hers, rubbing the top of his hand with her thumb gently. “You know I’m here for you, whatever you need right?” she said softly. They were busy with their jobs yes, but Ariadne would never not be there for James, even if he claimed he didn’t need anything.

was a time when i wasn't sure but you set my mind at ease December 23, 2025 @ariadne Ariadne mentioned Cas, the eldest Karkaroff who he’d become acquanitned with through the Order and Ouroboros business. While they didn’t see eye to eye, James often wondered what their working relationship would have been like if his father wasn’t in the mix. Harry trusted Cas, and James trusted his father’s opinion (most of the time). It had also been a point of disagreement between James and Teddy after the split. But, it made sense for Ariadne to speak to someone else with an infamous last name—though James personally thought that Cas and his sister could smile more if they wanted people to think good of them versus what they assumed. James nodded in agreement. Parvati’s advice was usually solid. ”That’s a good idea. I’ve met Cas before. I see his sister at work sometimes.” She worked in Interpol, which didn’t interact with Hit Wizards as much, and if they did, it was more on-site and rarely outside of giving James’ boss some direction.
James listened to Ariadne explain the advice that was given to her. It was an interesting thought. Destiny. A name set a person on a path, and it was easy to stick to that path and difficult to stray. In James’ case, it had been easy to follow the path. ”But we aren’t our parents. I think that’s solid advice.” Even James and his brother and sister had to carve their own paths that weren’t just being the child of Harry Potter. And on the other side, Ariadne and Cas had to carve their own path that wasn’t living in the shadows of their parents’ crimes. James wasn’t naïve enough to claim it made his life any harder and nothing like the child of former Death Eaters. It reminded him of the first time he’d brought Ariadne to meet his extended family. She had become acquainted with many of his cousins while at Hogwarts but had yet to meet who James thought would be the harsher critics—his uncles and grandparents. But she was right, Molly was the warmest and most welcoming person in the world, according to James, and her opinion had mattered the most in this matter. It was probably one of the few times James’ confidence had wavered only because he was so nervous. What if his grandmother hadn’t liked the girl he’d so desperately fallen in love with? Fortunately, it had worked out.
He smiled, and his head tilted a bit to the side as he remembered the interaction fondly. ”That she would. She loved you right away.” And once Molly had approved, the rest had also welcomed her. James looked back when he felt a hand on his own. She had a soft look in her blue eyes as James’ barely green ones locked with hers. She spoke softly, but James knew she meant every word she said. It had been a bumpy road for them. Between their last year at school and then the break they had taken, but they always found their way back. ”I know.” James gave her a slight grin. ”I think the transition has been hard on all of us.” He reminisced on when Harry had vanished and then been presumed dead. James felt he’d needed to step up and take care of his family, which had put distance between himself and everything else in his life that wasn’t work. And then he reappeared but….changed. James cleared his throat, family was never a straightforward subject, and with his free hand, he drank some of his ale. ”Um…you seeing Andy and everyone for Christmas?” He asked. He saw Andy at work but less now that he wasn’t in training, and she still was. Plus, Phil and his siblings were good friends of James’ as well.

Ariadne laughed lightly at James’ comment on Cas’ sister, who she didn’t know existed until he mentioned her. The talk that Cas and Ariadne had had was more focused on their parents, not their siblings. Ariadne certainly hadn’t mentioned hers. Ares was almost as bad as their own parents and Andy....well, she knew her sister had a dark side, but she used it for good. Or so she hoped. She didn’t want to dwell on Andy though, although James asked her if she’d be spending Christmas with the Longbottoms. “Yes that’s the plan. I know Phil’s girlfriend Marigold will be out of town, which is a little disappointing; I was looking forward to meeting her,” she told him. She knew Andy would probably be happier that Marigold wasn’t going to be at their Christmas, but Phil was her brother by adoption, and the relationship seemed good for him. She just wanted him to be happy.
“What about you? With everything that’s happened this year, I’m sure Molly is looking forward to hosting you for a...well, normal Christmas,” Ariadne asked, smiling softly as James affirmed Molly had loved her when they met. She had been terrified; her aunt after all had been Bellatrix Lestrange, whom Molly had killed during the Battle of Hogwarts. Ariadne had privately agonized over whether to mention it, but had decided against it; why bring up long dead family members who had no bearing on her current life? Still, it had been in the forefront of her mind as they made their way up the walk to the Burrow. “I’m sure she’s delighted that your father is back,” she added.

was a time when i wasn't sure but you set my mind at ease December 23, 2025 @ariadne James nodded. He hadn’t spoken to Phil in a while. Naturally, because his father had been a classmate of his own father’s, James knew Phil pretty well. Basically, if his father remained close to or remained friends with anyone after the last War and school, James had known their children since he was very young. Some of them were like additions to the family, like having more cousins than he already did. ”Well hopefully, he introduces her soon.” Ariadne was closer to Phil at this point, having quickly accepted him as a brother and especially since her own brother was an interesting character (to say the least). Andy had even adopted the Longbottom surname.
Normal. It wasn’t a word James was accustomed to using anymore and hadn’t for some time. His father was back, his mother was doing much better. Albus had decided not to live at home, but that didn’t surprise him, and Lily even seemed to be doing better as well. The only thing that weighed on him was the enormous void that would be there with his Aunt Hermione’s passing. ”Erm—I suppose as normal as it can get.” James cleared his throat slightly. ”Al still barely comes home.” He would have mentioned his Aunt if he didn’t think he’d start tearing up at the thought. It was a difficult subject, and one of the few times there had been such an event where he’d seen Harry so distraught. But they would push through as they always did. ”You’ll have to make sure and stop by. She’d love to see you. As would everybody else.” The lopsided grin returned to his face. To have such acceptance in the family was surely something that had begun with Harry and spread from there. Not that anyone was going to argue with his grandmother’s opinion.

Ariadne squeezed his hand lightly. “Your aunt was a wonderful woman, James. It’s okay to feel sad that she’s no longer with us. It speaks highly of her, and you,” she reminded him quietly. She hadn’t known his aunt Hermione well, at least personally; she supposed everyone knew OF the golden trio that included James’ father and his uncle Ron as well. Hermione had always been kind to her though, even if she sometimes got the feeling Ron didn’t really approve of her due to her family name. It had left a rather touching impression on Ariadne, and she had cried when James told her of her demise. She hadn’t been able to bring herself to ask Ares if he had been involved - for she didn’t believe the fireworks accident story one bit - but she was too much of a coward to confirm her suspicions. One she was sure James privately shared.
“I will certainly stop by to see your grandmother, when it is a good time for her. She does always cook the best food,” Ariadne said, grinning rather guiltily. Her adoptive mother Hannah was the landlady at the Leaky Cauldron, so she felt rather guilty preferring Molly Weasley’s dishes to the pub. Still, Hannah didn’t really do much of the cooking anyway, so it wasn’t that bad. “I do hope Phil brings her to New Years if she’s back from her family holiday by then,” she added about Phil. It seemed strange, to talk of family, her family, in a normal sense of things. Growing up a Lestrange, she was either treated with distrust from outsiders, or a weird sort of reverence from the Pureblood Elitists her parents used to entertain. “I hope she likes music at least, I haven’t been practicing piano for far too long, and I’d like an excuse to play. Plus, Andy does love her violin so playing may keep her distracted,” she added with a knowing glint in her eye. Oh how she just wished Andy would come out and declare her love for Phil; though the Longbottom family had adopted them both, they weren’t technically blood relatives, so it was perfectly fine in her opinion.

was a time when i wasn't sure but you set my mind at ease December 23, 2025 @ariadne Losing his Aunt was still something that weighed on him and his family. They’d only just begun to heal from his father’s return, and James had begun to feel a sense of normalcy again, as best as one could manage in this world. It was still some miracle that he hadn’t lost any cousins or other family members in that tragedy. James nodded. There was never anything but warmth in Ariadne’s eyes which he found comforting. Even when she was accused of horrible things during school, it had angered him so much when he knew her to be nothing but kind.
His father, his Aunt Hermione, his mother, and others had all told him stories of his late Uncle Fred and how it had affected his grandmother. And then when his father was presumed dead, he remembered how it weighed on her, and then his Aunt was killed. He supposed it was why she doted on her grandchildren so much and wished they weren’t in harm's way. She often asked if he was sleeping or eating enough, shoving a sandwich in his hands or a plate in his face to make sure he ate. ”Even though she doesn’t say it, she loves when people just show up. I think she likes the noise.” James admitted. Family events were chaotic, to put it nicely, and his grandmother would tell them to calm down and lower their voices. Still, he’d caught her smiling a time or two as Lily jumped off something too high and knocked over Albus on “accident” but also taking a bookshelf with her.
James thought back to the last time he’d spoken to Phil. His father was a friend of his own father’s from their school days, so just more of his generation he’d grown up alongside. ”I take it Phil has been busy? I’ve written him a few times. Also, I tried to send him a message on the phone, but I have to check with Harper. I’m probably doing something wrong.” Harper usually seemed amused at James’ endless questions, but he was fascinated by this technology. Perhaps a curiosity inherited from his grandfather. Still, it wasn’t his strength, and he stuck to dueling and quidditch. But, the Longbottoms were a good family, and despite the history between Phil’s father and Adriadne’s Aunt, they had taken them in as their own.
James still felt a bit of guilt at times for being the direct cause of so much pain for Ariadne in some way or form. Her parents had been incredibly displeased that they were dating, and then when Harry disappeared, she’d tried to be there for him, but James had just pushed her away in his own pain. That break wasn’t something they ever really spoke about, and James would rather not discuss it either. But, despite improved conditions, things could still be uneasy. James actually didn’t get to work with Andy often as she was still a trainee, and they mainly worked alongside the more senior Hit Wizards. ”Yes, I wouldn’t want her to put her training to use.” James responded, knowing how Andy was a force to be reckoned with at times. Phil’s girlfriend would no doubt have an interesting ‘meet the family’ experience.

Ariadne chuckled. “She’s probably used to a home full of children, with seven of her own. It makes sense that days of quiet can get rather dull for her,” she reasoned with a smirk. The Weasleys now also had dozens of grandchildren, as the six of them had at least two or more children themselves. “Well then I’ll have to stop by sometime in the next week. I’m due at the Longbottoms for Christmas, but perhaps Boxing Day or the day after,” she decided. She would prefer it if James would be there as well but she wouldn’t make it a condition. Molly had treated her with nothing but kindness, and knew her story. She knew she was different that most Purebloods, Lestranges especially, and had never held it against her.
“Nor would I," Ariadne agreed with a laugh at James’ comment on her sister. Andromeda was not someone to be trifled with; she had learned that fact when their parents ended up dead, and their childhood home destroyed after Andy and Ares had visited them. Ariadne hadn’t gone; it was very soon after her father had beaten and locked her in her room, and she had not wanted to face them. Sometimes she regretted not seeing her parents one last time, if only to tell them they would no longer hold her back from the life she wanted, and not the one they wanted for her. Still, it did not do to dwell on matters that could not be changed. “And how is Lily doing in her seventh year do-over?” she asked him. She had initially been shocked to learn Lily was repeating her last year at Hogwarts, but now that she’d had some time to think about it, she was much less surprised. “And Albus, he’s partway through his Auror training now isn’t he?” she added, not wanting to leave Albus out. The middle Potter had always been somewhat of a black sheep, being in Slytherin house rather than the familys’ Gryffindor, and she had felt bad for him for it.

was a time when i wasn't sure but you set my mind at ease December 23, 2025 @ariadne Ariadne had a valid point. The chaos of seven children was something to grow accustomed to. Plus, the stories his Uncle Ron told of his twin brothers felt like that was enough chaos on its own. Though James always figured they had to make up for the lack of trouble from their Uncle Percy. He smiled when she agreed to drop by. ”Let me know.” James requested as he mentally tried to remember his busy work schedule. ”I don’t think I’m scheduled next Tuesday, but I’ll have to double-check.” The holidays were a difficult time to coordinate time off.
The Lestranges were not a typical family by any means, but everything Ariadne had gone through only made James feel that she was strong than she thought. Between their final year at school and the events after, James could never say he understood, but even after his own father had vanished, he’d couldn’t even handle that gracefully. ”She’s doing well.” James explained. ”I visited yesterday, actually. And she was reading.” He said with a bit of disbelief in his voice. ”She was reading about Quidditch, of course.” But it was always a shock to see her so calm nonetheless. And Ariadne asked about his brother, and to that, he looked down a moment. Their relationship was not a bad one, but the family dynamic was still a bit rocky. ”He is…he hasn’t come by the house much.” James paused. "But he wouldn’t miss Christmas.” Their mother would never let him live it down.
James finished off his drink and looked at Ariadne’s almost empty glass. ”I’ll get us refills.” He said eagerly, standing from his seat.
