▲ March 11th, 2026 There was a rumor that a kelpie lived inside of a well that was situated in some dark, long forgotten back passageway of Knockturn Alley. Of course that meant it was a job for The Quibbler to write an article on it, despite Cordelia’s protests that if this was the case they needed to send notice to someone within the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. She couldn’t remember too much on the creatures aside from their shape-shifting capabilities, and thus had spent a good portion of the morning at Flourish & Blotts looking through books on them. The usual overly friendly employee was there, having seemingly forgotten the other dozen times that Cordelia didn’t like talking to her at all whilst browsing the aisles. The book she found and then purchased (which counted as a work expense thankfully) also had information about a charm that allowed one to cast a bridle over a kelpie’s head, which would keep it calm and docile and non-human eating like they were known to do. She really didn’t want to become a water demon’s lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. Skeptical, as she was with the majority of the ‘jobs’ The Quibbler editor sent her on, and fast approaching Knockturn Alley, Cordelia realized that she had never once entered the alley before. Obviously she knew of all the stories and had run away from Lily one summer day when the girl tried to forcefully drag her in to look at furniture made out of bones, but it also wasn’t a place that would normally be welcoming to someone like her. She wouldn’t even go in there if Eli was with her. There simply wasn’t a reason to go to Knockturn, though her job was certainly making that difficult. Backing out now with a business expense for a book and zero rolls of film used up wouldn’t look good on her, especially since it was still late morning. At least if she went missing on her search, her editor knew where she was headed and could alert her mum of her untimely demise. If the kelpie didn’t make quick work of her, some other dark inhabitant of Knockturn probably would. Swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat as she stood idle outside of the entrance to the alley, Cordelia screwed her eyes closed tightly and stepped forward blindly until she felt the noticeable change in cobblestones under her feet. If only the Sorting Hat could have seen her now. This was easily a one-way ticket into Gryffindor. Aside from the drastic shift in tone surrounding the shop fronts and general feeling in the air, there was no one else around in Knockturn. That didn’t make her feel better though, as all the hairs on the back of her neck were pricked up and screaming that she was being watched. For once it wasn’t the humidity causing problems with her knot of hair. After a few winding turns and awkward gawking at storefronts she had heard of but never seen before, Cordelia realized she was sufficiently lost. Which was great, because not only did she not know where this supposed well was, she also didn’t know how to leave. Every time she got nervous like this, she didn’t trust herself to disapparate. Even a simple Point Me spell didn’t work because she had no idea what cardinal direction she had entered Knockturn at. Frustrated, she found a decrepit bench that was situated against a mossy building wall and planted herself on it as she tried to figure out what to do next. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

i'm only human and i crash and i break down Diana counted the galleons in her pocket as she walked out of a small alleyway. If one was looking in front of them, they wouldn’t even have noticed the sliver in between two buildings. But Knockturn was filled with these twists and turns, like some dark maze meant to confuse those not meant to be there. Diana recalled her first time walking through here alone. There had been a couple times she’d ended up here on accident as a child. Excitable had been one way to describe her. She’d sworn she’d seen a Phoenix fly by, and as she ran away from her parents and siblings, ducking under people’s arms full of books and their school supplies and then finally exiting the large crowd—well, Diana realized she was lost.
The transition from a busy and happy Diagon Alley to the cold and eerie Knockturn alley had been enough for Diana to stop in her tracks and her hair turned black as the first shop window displayed a handsome collection of shrunken heads. Fortunately, it did not take long for Dustin to appear and grab the young girl’s hand to lead her back to her family. And it would not be the last time she accidentally stumbled upon this place. Most recently, she walked through the main path slowly and methodically. Not out of fear but almost out of exhaustion. The numbness that had taken over her soul since her sixth year left her walking through life with an emptiness in her eyes. As if that Vow acted like a parasite to her humanity.
Today she’d been at The Black Market or at least today’s iteration of it. The location often changed to avoid the authorities, and Diana found an easy market for her modified trinkets and potions. Easy gold to sustain herself while she waited for her Mistress to direct her. Turning the corner, she noted the moss-covered wall, which told her she was about dead center in Knockturn Alley, and based on the shops, she knew to keep going until one saw the shrunken heads and you would be back in Diagon Alley. But Diana paused. A girl was sitting on the bench and someone that did not look like the usual clientele she encountered here. Normally, Diana wouldn’t have bothered, but the look in her eyes and face made Diana pause—it reminded her of herself once upon a time. Scared in a situation beyond her control. Times like these sparked a piece of the old Diana back to the surface, and she took her hands out of her pockets and slowly approached the bench. ”Erm—are you okay?”

▲ ‘Point Me’ only spun her wand around wildly. In her confused and distressed state, Cordelia completely forgot that she could just walk into a store and ask for directions or apparate out. Yup, because that made sense! Merely approaching one of the shopkeepers here made her feel like it would invite bad luck on her family, or something along those lines. She had clearly read too many novels and watched more than her handful of horror movies. Those were all well and fine because they weren’t even remotely real. Knockturn was. Kelpie be damned, if she made it out of the alley unharmed, she was going straight to the Ministry and making a report. Then, if that came back without anything, she would tell her editor. Because this was quite honestly ridiculous and didn’t make any sense to her at all. And not to mention that they should have known better than to choose her for this task. She was absolutely the last person that they should have sent into Knockturn. Anyone could look at her and figure that out. Relatively defeated by everything, Cordelia returned her wand to her pocket and leaned back on the bench. There wasn’t anyone else around where she was, and now that she thought about it, aside from the strange feeling of being watched the entire time, she had yet to actually see another person walking around. The most obvious thought that jumped into her brain was that she was being watched from the windows, most of the ones that belonged to the shops or buildings that towered over the darkened alley were covered in grime and unknown stains. Clearly they’d never heard of Windex in Knockturn Alley. The footsteps she heard approaching definitely drew her attention though, and trying to discern if they were nearby was a task. Hopefully the person was friendly? Because she was positive that she wouldn’t be able to handle a dark witch or wizard right now, and certainly not a hungry kelpie climbing out of the depths of a well. But the figure that appeared was neither of those horrible possibilities, at least not on the exterior. It was a younger woman, and Cordelia immediately stood up when she saw that the other woman had taken notice of her. “N-Not really,” her voice shook a bit. “I-I uhhh…g-got l-lost looking f-for the exit.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

i'm only human and i crash and i break down The girl stood up after Diana spoke. She looked spooked more than anything. It wasn’t the first time that Diana had seen someone horribly lost in Knockturn Alley, and she knew it wouldn’t be the last. Diana paused. She was used to assessing people no matter the location. Undercover law enforcement personnel were everywhere, but she operated mainly alone and not part of some larger racket, so she doubted she was a target. ”Do you work nearby?” Maybe she was trying to get to Horizont or Diagon and took a wrong turn.
Whether you were new to the area or a regular who was walking and reading the latest edition of Witch Weekly, sometimes you took that wrong turn and ended up in a shadowy place where the air was thick with remnants of dark magic. But despite her harmless demeanor, Diana was still wary and curious about what her goal had been. ”Were you…shopping?” Diana looked around the shops, the windows darkened, and spider webs covered the lanterns. If she was undercover from the Ministry, this was a new tactic, but nonetheless, helping somebody who was lost was not illegal.
”I’m Diana, by the way.” It was a common name, not terribly specific of who she was. Plus, the benefit of having been the quieter twin at Hogwarts who often hid in the corner of the Ravenclaw Common Room with a book was that she was less remembered. If anything, she was remembered if only because she was a twin and that her younger sisters were triplets. However, Dustin had made the Bainbridge name more well known now, so she was careful with that. And if anyone would recognize her, it would be a member of the Potter or Weasley extended family.

▲ Oh goodness, she could never shop in Knockturn let alone work there. Cordelia immediately shook her head side to side to indicate that wasn’t her reason for being there. Her mum would probably kill her if she had a job in Knockturn, mostly because the shop owners were pretty sketchy. A few had been pointed out to her over the years, and they always looked like dubious individuals to her. Silently judging people and things was sort of her bad habit, kept inside her head because she’d be too worried about accidentally blurting it out if pushed a little to spill. This girl though, her name apparently Diana, didn’t set the warning sensors off at all though. She looked like a fairly normal person, and under regular circumstances this interaction would probably be stupidly mundane. “N-No…I-I would n-never shop here…” Cordelia stuttered out after a few seconds. She didn’t want that mistake to be made, though she knew she didn’t look like the sort that would want to buy furniture made out of human bones or cursed books. “C-Cordelia,” she added after getting Diana’s name. “I-I work for the Qui-Quibbler. T-Taking pictures,” she explained, lifting her camera up as if it wasn’t very obviously slung around her neck and currently in a death grip from both of her hands. She hesitated for a moment on whether or not she should tell Diana about why the Quibbler sent her here in the first place, then realized that it wasn’t like getting a picture of a rumored kelpie would invite competition. Her editor was the only one that actually cared about that sort of thing. “D-Do you know if there’s a w-well nearby? I-I n-need to find it…f-for work.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

i'm only human and i crash and i break down While Diana was far from a hardened criminal, she knew what fear looked like. It often stared back at her in the mirror. At least she could shift her features to help hide it, especially from herself. At her question, the girl immediately denied she worked in Knockturn with a quick shake of her head. It wasn’t a place for the faint of heart, but it was still curious finding her here. All sorts were up to no good around a corner, and the risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time was unfortunately very high.
The girl said her name was Cordelia, it wasn’t a name that Diana recognized, but she still seemed pretty harmless and simply lost. Besides, it wasn’t as if anything Diana was doing at the moment was illegal—in the case of undercover Aurors. Asher and Ondina both had the insight at the Ministry into how Law Enforcement might pick their Aurors for this type of work and passed the knowledge along, but as neither worked directly within the department--it was still a guessing game. ”Oh.” She had seen the camera but hadn’t thought it that relevant. But what was the Quibbler doing in Knockturn Alley?
Frowning slightly, Diana didn’t answer immediately. ”Can’t say I’ve seen the Quibbler here much. Though I’m sure, people will be relieved it's not the Prophet.” She was mostly thinking out loud. And Diana didn’t have to be anywhere in particular until much later. She could have easily walked away and left Cordelia to fend for herself in finding her way back to Diagon Alley and risk running into one of the creepier shop owners or regulars. ”There is just past Noggin’s.” Diana answered. Noggin and Bonce was a store dedicated simply to the sale and collection of shrunken heads—which apparently was an active niche market. ”I can take you there…if you want.” While she kept to herself and coldly kept people away, something about this girl reminded Diana about how helpless she actually felt. Well, it was a small comfort to know that Elaine hadn’t taken all of her humanity.

▲ Of course the Quibbler didn’t come here much! Only people up to shady business did dealings in Knockturn! The stores closer to the main drag of Diagon were a little more normal, though she still found skeleton furniture and other odds and ends strange and dark. Curiosity had absolutely never tried to kill this cat, mostly because she was usually too busy psyching herself out when walking by the alleyway entrance from the other side of the street. Having her handy-dandy Quibbler press badge shoved into her pocket was probably the best thing she could have on her at the moment though. This Diana character was right about the fact that it was better than being part of the Daily Prophet. If that had been the case, Cordelia would have seriously thought about quitting on the spot. At least with her current employer, even the nefarious dwellers of the district would consider her too crazy to bother with. Chasing down fictional creatures and stories in an already ridiculous world of magic actually had benefits occasionally. As for the location of the well that she was trying to locate, Diana responded by saying that it was just past ‘Noggin’s’, whatever that was. The name alone made her shudder, though that could have been the damp chill of the alley. Or the constant feeling of being watched. Or that she was a chicken with anything spooky that wasn’t very clearly fake, like movies and books. Her immediate thought on the name of the shop was that it was short for noggin, like a head. Hopefully it wasn’t a store that solely sold skulls. Unless they were used for medical purposes, she wanted nothing to do with any of them. “C-Could y-y-you?” Cordelia stuttered out as she shrunk a little more into her oversized sweater, her hands clutching the camera even tighter that they had been. Having a guide to where she needed to go would at least get her halfway there. And then maybe she could convince Diana to point her back towards Diagon? “I-I w-would really appr-appreciate it.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

I'M ONLY HUMAN AND I CRASH AND I BREAK DOWN Diana wondered if she looked this frightened now or before. The girl struggled with her words, but Diana didn’t mention it. It felt…cruel to point it out. In her own experience, her weaknesses, perceived or otherwise, thrown in her face had just been another tactic to bring her down. And well, it had worked. The Quibbler was not a threat to Knockturn Alley, so even without Diana’s help, Cordelia would have fared fine except for the part where she got lost. When the Prophet sent their employees this way, it was met with suspicion. Usually, they were just chasing down leads, but nobody wanted to talk.
So far, Diana had avoided any questions. The last thing she wanted was someone from the paper recognizing her before she could change her hair or her nose in some distinctive way. It was enough. She kept a fair distance from her family. Popping in every few months or more so her mother didn’t report her missing. ”Yea—it's fine.” Diana didn’t have to be anywhere the rest of the day, though she made a mental note to tell this girl not to accept the first offer of help anyone gave her. Diana had learned quite a bit working in the seedier places these couple of years. Things she would have never known to watch out for otherwise. ”It's just this way.”

▲ “Thanks.” Her voice came out like a whisper, the only way that was possible without a full on stutter at the moment. Even making eye contact was sort of difficult, only because of her own embarrassment over getting herself lost. Of course, going through with this and foolishly following Diana was maybe the dumbest thing she’d done all day. Her mum had spent years of her childhood trying to drill stranger-danger into her head and explain that she couldn’t just walk off with whomever, despite knowing it was stupid to do so. But Diana also hadn’t given her any reason to not be trustworthy, aside from being in Knockturn. But she was as well, so maybe they were both in a similar position? At least it didn’t seem like her new guide was lost, which was honestly pretty impressive with the way the alley curved and twisted constantly. The folks that hung out around here were completely different. She’d heard stories about how horrible they were, but Diana seemed perfectly normal. Hopefully she wasn’t a ghoul in disguise or something… Fiddling with the knobs on her camera was basically all she could do as they walked, her eyes flicking between her feet and Diana’s back as they went. Cordelia had no idea if this was the correct way to the well or if she was being led to be kidnapped and trafficked to an underground house elf fighting ring. Her editor had mentioned that as a potential article once and she immediately rebuked the idea. The shock on the editor’s face at the fast response definitely told her that speaking her mind got her places. Unfortunately she hadn’t said anything when given this job and look where that got her. “It’s c-confusing b-back here…” she said aloud, as if trying to justify her misdirection by blaming it on the alleyway instead. I'M ONLY HUMAN AND I CRASH AND I BREAK DOWN Diana was mildly concerned that someone who looked so frightened so quickly trusted a stranger. But Diana supposed that since she wasn’t a sociopath like some of her colleagues, maybe she just looked like a friendly face in that regard. But Diana didn’t mind, and it wasn’t a difficult task. Maybe this small act of kindness would help her pay off some of her karmic debt to society. But Diana didn’t give much information about herself, she didn’t know this girl, and she was wary and paranoid enough to wonder if Elaine was up to something. Making sure that her favorite puppet and pet were behaving and she wasn’t trying to run away. The invisible prison walls that Diana lived inside followed her no matter where she went.
”It is at first.” Diana agreed. She remembered how her heart hammered in her chest the first few times she wandered down these dimly lit alleys. As a child, they had always walked past the entrance to the Alley on their way to the Quidditch Supply store, barely keeping up with Dustin as he ran to it. She’d looked at the dark entrance curiously before her mother quickly dragged her away. ”You shouldn’t come alone next time. There’s a lot of bad people back here…” Diana was one of them, and the thought weighed on her. The guilt of what she knew and had seen but could not speak of, was it so selfish to want to stay alive? But she looked at the girl, giving her an encouraging grin. ”It's just up here, around the corner.” Diana pointed, and as they approached the corner, you could see the well though it wasn’t well lit here.

▲ Not going into Knockturn on her own again was the understatement of the century. How about never going remotely close to the entrance ever again? Or looking at it. Or even thinking about it. Such a commitment was sort of difficult, only because she lived so close in Horizont, but she could certainly try her best to never worry herself about Knockturn again once she escaped it. "What kind?" Cordelia hesitantly asked Diana. Scaring herself further would really solidify never needing to come back. As soon as she got her pictures, that was it for her time in Knockturn. The worst part about this (aside from getting lost) was the fact that she knew these photographs were going to be useless. Every single time she was sent to take pictures of creatures in strange places, they either didn't show themselves or were never really there. Now, a kelpie in a well in Knockturn did have the potential to be real, only because of the relative sketchiness of the area. So maybe she'd finally luck out. She needed that today. Thankfully Diana was nice enough and led her to where the well was. Should she have been as trusting? Probably not. But they were seemingly similar in age and the other girl hadn't given Cordelia any reason to not trust her. If something did happen, it was all on her for being too trusting. With one last turn, the well was fully in view and just about as scary as she imagined it to be. Why was there a lone well in the middle of Knockturn, looking like it just popped out of a horror movie? She had no idea, but it was creepy and immediately sent shivers down her whole body. As if the whole area wasn't scary enough already. Forgetting that Diana was with her momentarily, Cordelia briskly walked up towards the edge of the well and glanced over it. Whether magical in nature or simply spooky, she could barely see past the top edge of the water. Everything below the surface was a murky bluish-green, and she could've sworn there were air bubbles coming up from the depths. Quickly rummaging in her bag she pulled out a carrot and tossed it into the water before taking a few steps back and preparing her camera. If there was a kelpie, she was going to draw it out. I'M ONLY HUMAN AND I CRASH AND I BREAK DOWN Diana looked back at Cordelia after she asked the question. She hadn’t expected it. Nobody really asked that, but then again, it was rare to find someone so innocent and frightened in this part of town. She blinked a few times. ”Erm…” Diana didn’t know where to begin in answering that question. And even if she could categorize the people here into neat little categories, which one would she fall in? It was a disgusting feeling. She wasn’t a bad person, or she told herself. It wasn’t her choice to be here.
”Just people with bad intentions.” She clarified. That was a good way to sum up a good chunk of them. How many of them were simply here out of necessity? The limited choices some had were never a thought for the fortunate. ”And honestly, some are just creepy.” She tried to lighten the mood a bit. They arrived at the well, and Diana stopped and gave Cordelia space to do what she needed to do. Technically she could leave, but then the poor girl would probably get lost again, and perhaps one of those people Diana thought of would bump into her.
She couldn’t see what the girl was doing, but she heard a light splash and then nothing. With an eyebrow raised looked around to check for anyone. But it was simply quiet. ”What were you looking for again?” Diana couldn’t recall if Cordelia had mentioned it before.

▲ Cordelia knew when things were watered down for her. Her parents had done the same thing during the divorce, as if she was incapable of processing her emotions correctly. It was quite ridiculous when she really thought about it. Just because she lacked superb communication skills it didn't mean that she needed everything to be delivered to her gently. Though in this instance, maybe it was better that Diana did it this way. Freezing up and becoming an immovable statue in the middle of Knockturn Alley was absolutely a possibility for her. A soft warning about the sort of characters she'd correctly assumed were lurking about was enough to keep her on edge but not fully freaking out. With her task almost complete anyways, she knew she could tough it out a little bit longer. Then she'd put in a word with her editor to never send her here again. What were they thinking anyways? Swallowing nervously as she watched the carrot bob in the water, Cordelia felt a shiver down her spine having forgotten that Diana was right next to her. That was a condition of taking photographs. Someone (maybe Eli?) had called it being 'in the zone'. Everything else was shut off when she had the camera pulled up to her face, and even in Knockturn she could retreat into the safe space. Nothing else really mattered while taking pictures, and the things she'd do to get the right shot really pushed her out of her area of comfort. Today was a shining example of that. "A kelpie...supposedly," Cordelia muttered back from behind the lens. If she was unlucky, it would be a kappa instead. Then she'd have to alert the Ministry because those were so much more dangerous than a stray kelpie in a well. "C-Could you l-look in and check if there's anything under the water?" she added. "I-I c-can't get too close with m-my camera." A poor excuse to protect something she'd charmed to be water, scratch, and curse proof. Diana didn't know that though. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

I'M ONLY HUMAN AND I CRASH AND I BREAK DOWN Diana looked around as Cordelia waited for something. It was quiet, and Diana had the sudden urge to yawn. Was something supposed to come out of the water? It seemed like a terrible idea for the paper to send someone alone into Knockturn Alley. But what did Diana know? Fortunately, she wasn’t in a hurry to be anywhere. Her life consisted of working, making or modifying stuff for work, and then more work. Every once in a while, she’d see her sisters, but it was this constant conflict of wanting to stay with them and get as far away from them as possible.
She could see in Cara’s eyes that her twin knew something was amiss. But then Diana would avoid her gaze. Diana crossed her arms loosely. Did she hear that correctly? Diana had never heard whispers about a Kelpie in the well among the regulars, which undoubtedly would have caused some kind of stir. Slowly her eyes moved to the girl when she made her request. Was she serious? ”Um, sure.” As much as she didn’t want to, what did Diana have to lose. A wild Kelpie was one way to get out of an Unbreakable Vow. Slowly, she walked up the few elevated stone steps to the well. She could see the carrot Cordelia had thrown in. Finally, she peered over the edge. All she saw was darkness as if the water itself had turned black. ”I don’t see anything…”

▲ Cordelia could feel the curses of her Hufflepuff ancestors for making someone else enter danger instead of taking it head on herself. She never claimed to be brave or cunning or book smart, though knew an arsenal of charms that could easily stop a kelpie in its tracks should it decide to pop out of the well. Then taking a picture would be super easy. The real question was which stunning spell would be the most effective tag-teamed with a floating charm. Something that completely immobilized it in one go, but wouldn’t cause harm was her best bet. She hadn’t even seen that Diana had agreed with her request and started to approach the well, too concerned with her what-if scenario. Could she even get her wand out fast enough with her hands currently occupying her camera? Quick drawing her wand had never been one of her skills, usually managing to bobble it instantly. Snapped out of her daydream as she heard Diana respond saying that she didn’t see anything inside the well, Cordelia started to move closer. Her nose was scrunched up in frustration as she followed her new companion up the steps and to the opening to the well. Peering over, she saw the carrot, but nothing else. Not even a leftover ripple from when it landed in there. Taking her wand out, she pointed it over the stones and at the carrot, using a pressure charm to send the carrot below the surface of the water. It was strange. She could feel the water resistance fighting back against her spell, and cut it after a few seconds. The bubbles that erupted up as the carrot returned to the surface in a gross pop were the only sign of disturbance inside the well. “M-Must not be one here…” That figured. Still, she pulled up her camera and snapped a photo of the kelpie-less well. At least they had the carrot for proof. “Do y-you know the way out too?” Cordelia asked as she let her camera hang again and backed away from her failed job. While disappointing, it wasn’t exactly surprising. Most of the work she did was for nothing, and The Quibbler just claimed the creature was invisible or distorted her photographs just enough to make it questionable. They would probably spin the bubbles in the shot as signs of the kelpie existing and merely being shy. She could already see the headline. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
