What a grueling week. The Ballycastle Bats' first match was approaching, and though the team worked quite well together, there was still the slight speed hump that Luna was now forced to see Simon daily. It didn't help that he looked really sexy all sweaty and worn out from practice, looking more like some Norse god of thunder than a half vampire. It was incredibly frustrating and incredibly arousing at the same time. More than once, Luna had found herself staring at him rather than looking out for bludgers and had subsequently received quite a few blows to the head. It was like she had forgotten how much he had embarrassed her - but then she would remember and focus and play well for a while before she got distracted again.
Training had ended early today, in the lead up to their first match the next day. Luna had texted Evy, demanding she come and watch her first match and that she had some news for her. She'd invited her best friend to spend the night before at hers so they could go to the match together and Luna could show Evy around the stadium. She'd secured prime tickets for Evy - when the coach asked if the team had any family members they'd wanted to invite, she was the only one Luna had thought of.
Luna curled up on the lumpy sofa in her flat, and turned on the telly to mindlessly watch something as she counted down the moments until Evy's planned arrival. They hadn't seen one another since just after the fire, having confirmed they were both relatively unhurt but rattled all the same. Luna found her mind traitorously drifting towards the way Simon would squint in the morning sun before deftly passing the quaffle to one of her teammates when the buzzer went. Luna jumped to her feet and buzzed Evy in, throwing open the door and beaming at her friend as she did so. "Feeling as happy as Phoebe on a normal day, I am," said Luna with a grin, stepping back to let her friend through. "How've you been?"

There she was, my new best friend High heels in her hand swayin' in the wind The world seemed to have turned upside down the day Hogwarts burned to the ground. Evy realized how lucky she had been to run into Lily and others and escape into the village through that secret passageway. Sarah had been on site because of the Ministry’s presence, but she’d also found Luna quickly to make sure she was alright. But the weeks and days after had been slow as Evy pondered what the next step was. Luna had decided to forgo her final year and join the Quidditch League, and while Evelyn was happy for her best friend, she was also dreading how she would be alone at school the following year.
With that, Luna had promptly invited—or rather demanded that Evy visit her before her first official Quidditch Match. Not that she would have declined the invitation, and she eagerly accepted. Fortunately, Evy was old enough to not need more difficult means of transportation. With her backpack slung over her shoulder, she apparated into a town that she’d visited before with her brother. It was close enough that she could walk the short distance to Luna’s flat. Now that she’d visited, she could apparate much closer in the future.
Approaching the door, she pressed the button and waited, and the door unlocked quickly after. Luna’s smiling face was unusual in that it was Luna, but Evelyn also couldn’t help but smile brightly as she stepped through the door, waiting for the door to close before she pulled her into a big hug. Well, now it was Evelyn’s turn to act a bit out of character as her personal space was a sacred thing. ”Merlin, I missed you.” She admitted, taking a step back and dropping her backpack near the door. ”I’ve just been home. Mum is afraid to let me out of her sight with everything, but what about you? How’s it been?” It had to be different than a House team for sure, but Evy wanted to know all the details.

In the weeks since the fire, Luna had begun to develop into a new person. She was much more relaxed now that she had struck out on her own, even though she missed Evy every day. But the weight that she'd shoulder as one of three had been lifted, and Luna finally felt successful. She had everything she'd ever wanted, which was a short list. Well, almost everything.
Luna's delight at greeting Evy seemed to take her best friend by surprise, which was... no surprise. She had never been known for being the bubbly, exuberant sister. She mentioned something about Phoebe offhandedly, and stepped back to let Evy through. Evy stepped forwards and hugged Luna, which she returned with surprising vigour. It seemed both of them had been through some personal changes. "Me too. What are we going to do when you start school?" asked Luna with a frown. "I've got to upgrade my phone, to be honest. I want to hear every bit of juicy gossip. And if Nessa sheds her skin and actually turns out to be a decent person. No, that would be asking too much," said Luna thoughtfully.
Perhaps Luna's parents should have been more worried about her moving to Ireland, but they seemed content with the fact that Elaine was dead, and the Purifiers disbanded and arrested. "I'll have a word with your mum. I am perfectly capable of taking care of you," said Luna, leading Evy to the lumpy couch. "Want some wine? I managed to get a few nice bottles, so won't be hungover or anything tomorrow. It's much nicer than that firewhisky shit," she added, not answering Evy's question about how things had been quite yet. There was much to tell, but it had to be done delicately.

There she was, my new best friend High heels in her hand swayin' in the wind It had been a big adjustment to go from seeing someone every day to not at all. Normally there were those last few days of the term to mentally prepare, but now all those feelings were muddled together with images of smoke in her mind and the panic in the occupants of those paintings in that corridor. Evy let out a heavy sigh with an immediate frown at the question because it was a thought she was avoiding. ”I don’t know Lu—Mina said she overheard a lot of students at the shop say they’re going to Ilvermorny.” It was a bit discouraging, not that Evy had been particularly close with many of them, but familiar faces in a new school would have been nice.
Evy did smile again. Nessa had been in their year, so a constant presence around the Slytherin Common Room and Girl’s dorm, but while friendly—they hadn’t been incredibly close. But Evy figured they might get along. They both got along with Nate, didn’t they? Evy took a seat on the couch and scoped out her surroundings. The idea of having a place, no matter what size, to oneself made her envious. She’d shared a room with at least one sister until they either graduated or moved out. It had been strangely quiet after Mina had moved.
”She’ll get over it. I think Sarah has managed to talk her off the ledge of homeschooling me.” Her Ministry insight had been useful in that argument. Plus, Evy had asked her to intervene since she didn’t want to be stuck at home either. In hindsight, maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad. Luna offered wine and Evy nodded enthusiastically. The perks of not being on a school campus and also being of age. Then again, if she’d really wanted alcohol, she could always count on Mina. Their strange little tradition had been a tequila shot whenever she’d managed to visit her in the village while at Hogwarts. While Luna busied herself, Evy glanced at her again. She looked much the same but also a little different. Unless freedom from her sisters just suited her, but she’d wait to say anything. ”So, do they have you practicing often?”

For the better part of five years, Luna and Evy had seen one another every single day. Luna had allowed herself to be vulnerable around Evy, and the Olivera girl had taken it in stride. Luna was not one to let herself open up easily, but the sheer amount of time the pair spent together led to a deeper sort of understanding. Luna wrinkled her nose in distaste. ”Eugh, you couldn’t catch me on American soil even if I were dead,” said Luna haughtily. But she felt for Evy. It would be scary to know no one, bar Nessa. Who was a complete bitch in an unpleasant manner. Luna had never really gone off on her own, though she had always tried to. Even now, she wasn’t alone on her team - Simon was there with her.
At the thought of Simon, Luna chewed on her cheek. She hadn’t exactly been forthcoming with this information. Thankfully, Evy didn’t seem to notice that Luna had stopped following, and nodded only when her friend paused for thought. Luna hastily offered Evy some wine, and her friend agreed. Luna got up to pour them both a glass, taking a bigger sip than she probably should have. Predictably, Evy asked more about her life on the Quidditch pitch, and Luna knew she’d have to come clean. Luna took hre time mulling over her friends question. ”Yes, quite a lot. Pretty much all day sessions all the time. But it’s not so bad,” said Luna slowly. ”Simon is on the team too,” she added in a small voice, avoiding Evy’s eyes and the judgement she knew would cloud her gaze.

There she was, my new best friend High heels in her hand swayin' in the wind The idea of the drastic change that her final year would be still weighed heavily on Evelyn. There was that feeling again, that void. She’d felt it the first time she realized she was home alone and all her siblings in school or living their lives. And then Mina graduated, but Luna had been there. Then her brother died, but her family was there, though incomplete. But now…well, Luna wasn’t going to be there, and neither were her sisters. Evy would be alone at Beauxbatons. Just herself and her walls, hopefully, the year would go by quickly.
Luna paused when Evy asked her next question, and she took the opportunity to drink the wine but still kept a curious eye on her friend. When one spent enough time with someone and so closely, the little things were quickly noted, much like when Evy would note behaviors at breakfast or wherever Luna’s eye wandered that morning—typically in the direction of the Gryffindor table. But then Luna finally spoke—and there it was. Evy blinked a few times, making sure she had heard correctly. ”Simon.” She repeated. ”Simon.” The inflection in Evy’s voice was asking if they were speaking about the same former Gryffindor Quidditch Captain. ”Well I hope you’ve mistaken his head for a bludger since that’s all it's good for.” Evy scoffed, shaking her head and drinking more wine. ”How is that going then? Why didn’t you tell me?” Evy was curious why it wasn’t mentioned, Simon had done something unforgivable in Evy’s eyes, and Luna knew that.

Luna had known that Evy would sniff out her secret somehow. If only she were able to mask her emotions from her best friend. But that was just it, wasn't it? Evy was her best friend, and she would tell it like it was. She repeated Simon's name a few times, and Luna felt her cheeks burn. "Yes," she said at last, exhaling her answer in one breath. "Well... not really. We just sort of avoid each other when we can," said Luna. It had been somewhat difficult, seeing as the pair hadn't really spoken since the end of term when the castle had gone up in flames. And then, Simon had chosen Claudia over her. That girl had pulled the wool over Simon's and Nate's eyes, and caused trouble wherever she went.
"We went out on the first night after practice, with the rest of the team. But nothing happened. He's with that girl, Claudia now. Though I suspect she's been using her newfound freedom in London to pursue others, or spin Nate back into her web," spat Luna with more venom than she had meant. "I didn't say anything because there wasn't really anything to tell." Luna shrugged, taking a deep drink from her wine. "Anyways, it's not like I have much choice in the matter. We were recruited to the same team. I'm not going to quit just because of some petty school romance," said Luna, tilting her chin upwards slightly. "There's this guy on the team called Chaz. He's mental. I think you would find him rather funny," Luna added evasively. "I don't know how he exists or sustains himself, because every time he's off the pitch, he's blind on some thing or another."

There she was, my new best friend High heels in her hand swayin' in the wind It was odd for Luna not to tell her something, not that each girl wasn’t entitled to their own secrets. Evy tried not to consider if this was just their new reality while she was still in school and Evy playing Quidditch. Was this going to be their new normal until they just didn’t tell each other anything anymore? She tried not to think about it so dramatically, but she also remembered feeling ghosted by her own brother before she realized he had just died in a terrible accident. A faint flush crept onto Luna’s face, but that could have also just been the wine.
Luna brought up Claudia, though Evy shot her a look. Even if Claudia had committed to Simon, she doubted that Nate would fall for that. She remembered the bruises and marks left on his hands and his reaction when she’d asked about them, the pain in his eyes—Claudia had done a number on him. ”I doubt she’s chasing after Nate anymore. Probably found herself a new beau at that school.” Last she heard, she was at WADA, but otherwise, she didn’t keep track. Evy sipped more wine, wondering if she wanted to push this matter. What Simon had done to her best friend was not forgotten by any means, and she supposed if they were playing on the same team, they had to be civil. ”Well, in any case, I don’t have to be nice to him.” There was a slightly amused grin on her face. It made her life easier when she didn’t have to pretend.
”Funny how?” She asked. Evy was ‘picky’ for lack of a better word, but she didn’t grow close to that many people. She felt she had a sort of an inner circle of sorts, and changing that was not something she liked to do. Maybe that’s why the adjustment into her seventh year induced such anxiety. It was shifting everything comfortable in her life. Evy slid a bit into her corner of the couch, making herself comfortable. "I don’t know Luna…maybe I’ll find someone nice at Beauxbatons.” Sipping more wine, her voice a bit dreamy. It was an option, but from what she’d heard of the school, she didn’t figure she’d fit in very well in any case. There had been plenty of nice boys and girls at Hogwarts, but starting over at a new school for only a year was something she was dreading.

Luna had been hesitant to tell Evy about Simon being on the team, especially since Evy had been just as affronted by Simon's actions as she had. Except Evy was cleverer and smarter than she was, and didn't get reeled in by a set of pretty eyes and fighting words. Thankfully for Luna, Evy did not completely lose her head and yell at Luna, just gave her a narrowed glance before replying about Claudia. Luna didn't really care about the other girl, but she liked the idea of eliminating the competition. "No, you don't," said Luna at last with a smile.
Luna brought up a different teammate of hers. "Funny as in... I dunno, he's just wild. Never know where he's gonna go next. So unlike Nate, who's cold and calculate, and more free willed than Simon, if you can believe that," said Luna, uncertainly. She took a deep drink of her wine. "Should we watch a film? My telly has got this cool service that queues up films for you, look," said Luna, turning it on and opening Netflix. To think, she'd gone six years at Hogwarts without ever learning about this. "I've only just started watching some of these, but this one looked good. It's got blue people in it. But its like, a hundred hours long," said Luna, frowning.
Turning to Evy, Luna tilted her head inquisitively and placed a gentle hand on Evy's arm. It was a very uncharacteristic gesture from her. "I don't think you need to worry. When did boys become the priority anyways?" replied Luna in a soft tone.
