PERSONALITY “So responsible” “Always so well-behaved.” "She’s like a little adult.” Temperance was taught from a young age to behave and that expectations were important. As long as she met them, her parents seemed happy with her, and considering how much they worked, she just wanted them to be happy when they were home. And as new siblings joined the family, she was often put in charge of them. As she grew older, this might have meant making dinner or ensuring they had their school supplies. Fortunately, Calliope helped as she got older, so Temperance was not alone in this effort. One could say that she was a natural leader, though it wasn’t immediately obvious. As someone with a more ambivert personality, she had moments when she was laughing and joyful and others were more reserved. It depended on the crowd around her and her mood that day. But the balance between her patience and stress altered the way she would respond. On the days her patience wore thin, she could get a bit short-tempered and snippy, while other days, she would let out an exasperated sigh at most and not say a word. At the young age of twenty-three, Temperance is tired of shouldering so much, but she continues to do it because she feels she has to. One can ask her how she is doing, and she’ll respond “fine” even if she isn’t. But aside from the weight of her life and responsibilities, Temperance is sharp and focused. Mentally she is incredibly organized and an efficient multi-tasker, and typically always thinking a few steps ahead. This makes her a quick thinker and why she was able to secure her current job at Witch TV. While it is an entry-level type position, it opens a lot of opportunities for her to shine. It is also a good distraction from the poor relationship with her deadbeat father. After all those years of demands and expectations, she can’t stand to see him just sitting on the couch all day. The resentment that sits in her stomach is heavy, and instead, Temperance focuses on helping take care of Eli and Atticus. Her relationship with her siblings is generally good. Sometimes she can bicker with her sister, but there are hardly any sisters in the world that don’t at some point. With Eli, Temperance usually finds herself wondering what in the world is going on in that curly-haired head of his, and Atticus tends to keep out of trouble, so she continues to give him her books that she’s already read when he isn’t taking something apart. The memory of their mother is present in the house still, and it’s a void that Temperance hasn’t gotten over, and she probably never will. Questions always go through her mind when things are far too quiet, and that little girl just wants to know what she did to make her leave. Maybe she wasn’t a good enough daughter. Maybe she should’ve stayed home after graduation and tried to get along with Theron. In Temperance’s mind, their mother is most certainly dead, but she just doesn’t talk about it if she doesn’t have to. Really her biggest fear is that despite all her hard work, nothing she does will be good enough. That one day, Calliope, Eli, and Atticus will tell her she didn’t do a good enough job, and they abandon her as their mother did. But, so far, that hasn’t happened, and she continues to be the workaholic that she is. Which isn’t great for her social life, since her priorities will always come first. From an early age, Temperance was applauded for being very mild-mannered as a child. Always behaving when the family would go out and never causing a fuss or throwing a tantrum in the store as the other children did. She was the model of a perfect child, and from an early age, Temperance learned that meeting those expectations brought a smile to her mother and father’s face. At the age of three, she was joined by a sister--Calliope. Immediately it was noted that her new sister’s hair kept changing color, and it fascinated Temperance and worried the young child as it wasn’t normal by a three-year-old’s standard. Another year later, she gained her first brother—Elijah. Her father was over the moon with his first son, but it didn’t take long to realize how different Temperance was from her brother and sister. While she tried her best to be calm, the six-year-old began to order around Calliope and Eli as much as she wanted. They were so young that they let her. But while Eli was often running around outside, falling out of trees and creating holes in his new shirts—Temperance didn’t dare because she knew that she had to behave and set an example for her younger siblings. When she was almost eight years old, she gained another sister. It was a fairly large age gap, but like she had with Callope and Eli, she tried to reign them all in and show them that running around outside and jumping in the mud with their new shoes would not end well. But then again, nobody was ever as seriously punished for anything as Temperance had been. Maybe the trouble of four kids of various ages exhausted her parents, who were constantly working. Their mother especially worked quite a bit as an Auror which required long hours and a long time away from home. They saw their father more, but it wasn’t odd to find the children at home with Temperance in charge. But the only people that really called her Temperance were her mother and father. Very quickly, they realized that ‘Temperance’ was not easy for a small child to say. So Calliope, Eli, and Atticus each decided on their own nickname derived from either her first or middle name. When Temperance got much older, she preferred to use her middle name as her relationship with her father soured. At the age of eleven, Temperance was the first to attend Ilvermorny, and she was sorted into Wampus house. As the house of adventurers, it was an odd pairing as she might have expected to be sorted into either Thunderbird or Horned Serpent. But while at school, she had felt a freedom she’d never quite expected before. There was still the responsibility and duty of achieving her grades and staying out of trouble. Still, she made good friends early as she was never shy, despite preferring to observe rather than participate. The clubs in the school provided her a sense of achievement as she helped the Club Captains organize events and keep their members in check. It all came naturally to her. Academically she did well in Charms, Herbology, and Care of Magical Creatures. And she also enjoyed reading, finding a love of fiction, and especially muggle novels. Many of these books were borrowed from her muggle-born friends until she found an old book shop in Southern California where she could get them herself. And she passed many of these novels along to her youngest brother Atticus who would read anything you put in front of him. Despite all her efforts, she didn’t have the same knack for certain subjects such as Potions or Transfiguration. All of these subjects were incredibly important, and that was stressed upon by their mother. As an Auror, she would have excelled in any subject put in front of her, and she had high hopes for her eldest. As it were, the rest of her school years were uneventful in a way. Her brother and sister joined her at the school, and when she wasn’t attending to her Prefect duties, she checked on Calliope and Eli, making sure they were doing well. And when she wasn’t doing her homework, she participated in Charms Club or the school Newspaper. Then came the end of her final year. She wasn’t surprised that her mother was not in attendance for her graduation. Theron was there, along with a newly eleven Atticus and Calliope and Eli, of course. But then came the questions. What are you going to do now? Are you going to work for MACUSA? Did you even qualify for Law Enforcement? Temperance, despite what her name might suggest, was quick to anger. She didn’t stick around long after graduating and found her own tiny apartment in Los Angeles. While there, she worked as a bartender, mostly nights, while she found a lucrative internship with the Witch TV station in the city. It kept her busy and out of the house, though she did make time to visit her siblings. However, that didn’t last long as the following year, she received bad news. The children were used to their parents out and working, their father was a retired player now, but their mother was the busy Auror. That is until one day she went to work and was never seen again. Temperance wrote to her siblings, who were all still in school. Sometime that fall, she finally went home to check on their father only to see him in a sorry state. It couldn’t have been past ten in the morning when he was already passed out drunk on the couch and the house in disarray. It wouldn’t be long before her siblings were due home for the holidays, so she gave up her tiny flat and moved back into her old room to help take care of things. And that’s how it was for a couple of years. Temperance already had a rough relationship with her father before this. While he wasn’t a terrible father, but his time playing Quidditch had kept him away from home almost as much as their mother’s work. And after his retirement and mother’s disappearance, he didn’t exactly step up to fill in. Plus, Temperance had often taken issue with parents' expectations that only happened to be around when she messed something up and not the other ninety-nine percent of the time. The papers stopped reporting, MACUSA stopped looking, and then it was just decided that she was presumed dead. Deep down, Temperance knew her father was not a bad person. He was hurting. But so was she and her siblings. By the time Calliope graduated from Ilvermorny, she worked as a Writer for Witch TV in Los Angeles but still the gig as a bartender to help support the family. But during that summer, Ilvermorny was attacked and heavily vandalized. It hurt to see her old school treated in that way. A home away from home and where she had spent the majority of ages eleven through seventeen. Since Eli and Shiloh were still in school, the family picked up and moved to London to attend the Magical School there: Hogwarts. Temperance and Calliope were not thrilled with the move, but Temperance knew that she had to put her family and her siblings first before what she wanted. And for a moment, she feared that she would have to give up her small career at Witch TV as Calliope had to do with her apprenticeship. But fortunately, she was able to transfer to Witch TV in London to continue her work. Truthfully, Temperance hardly saw a good night’s sleep from the time she was a teenager as she chased her siblings around to make sure they were okay and got what they needed. She made sure they got their school supplies before the year started as their mother was working and their father. Before Shiloh’s first year, they had to deal with the search and investigation into their mother’s disappearance, but despite Temperance not living in the family home, she made sure he was ready for his first year. Moving to London added to the stress, as did the events that would happen after. Dragons rampaged through the village near Hogwarts Castle, and the infamous Wizarding Prison fell. The following year Hag’s Fever grounded people where they were. It severely affected Temperance’s work as resources were limited, and actors could not get to London to work on productions. By the summer of that year, she’d found a job as an associate producer. It was the bottom of the food chain but a move in the direction that she wanted for her career, and despite the stress and running around, she enjoyed every bit of it. Something about helping produce the stories on parchment into something they could see and that provided an escape helped Temperance escape the parts of her life she didn’t care to think about. That summer, however, it only got worse. An accident at the Quidditch Final cost many lives. She was only grateful her family wasn’t injured or killed. But it brought back that uncertainty and anxiety from when her mother had gone missing. It brought attention back to that void in her life. She was just a girl who missed her mother. But they pushed through. Her work began to shift the following year when a mysterious island appeared. Unfortunately, nobody at Witch TV was able to gain passage as the Ministry locked down the borders. It was a shame as perhaps it would have made a good documentary at some point. She knew Aurors and Cursebreakers who possibly had visited. But things seemed to settle down. There wasn’t much time to check in on her siblings as she used to have, and honestly, Temperance was far too tired to tell them what to do on most days. Shiloh was a good kid, and she seemed to like Hogwarts and her surroundings after adjusting quickly after the initial move. But now Hogwarts was gone. The fear that spread through Temperance at the thought of her youngest sister in danger hardly let her sleep in the days after even though he was safe and then wondering if this Purifier threat would spread to the areas surrounding the Castle where Eli worked. But with the Castle gone, her sister would have to return to the United States to resume her schooling. And despite their very different personalities, she remains close to her siblings and tries to be a buffer between them and their deadbeat dad. Fortunately, Hogwarts returned with a new school structure. Shiloh tried to explain it to Temp but the eldest would just have to take her word for it. Just another thing to add to the long list of things to learn as a transplant from the States. But it was not to be smooth sailing. In early March 2028 Temp arrived home from work to find her brother curled up on the floor, pale and shaking. Their father was dead and her only brother had been unfortunate enough to find him. Temp hates that it wasn't her. There was a sense of relief but the same weight as before. Temp didn't know how to feel, so she didn't--besides, she had a funeral to arrange. OOC
