PERSONALITY A drifter at heart, Damian was always a bit different from his brothers and sister. He learned from a young age to be calculating and methodical in all walks of life, and to be proud of his name even when his siblings were not. Damian was well loved and coddled by his mother, giving him the idea that he could get away with almost anything, something which still holds true today. He has never been content staying in one place, something that caused his eldest brother Cas discontent as he took over as head of the family. Damian learned the value of secrets from his mother. His brother instilled in him a need for precision and methodology with whatever he did. Though on the surface, Damian appears free spirited and flaky, he is at his core both determined and calculating. Those close to him know that everything has a price, and each move and decision has a counter move. He is friendlier at first than his siblings, though no less dangerous if crossed. Damian is terrified of going the same way as his mother - losing his mind as well as his status as a pureblood. He is more in line with blood purity than Cas and Ana, but will twist his beliefs to suit the public opinion. He found joy in crafting stories, both true and untrue to keep himself mentally stable. ORIGIN & RELATIONS Prague, Czech Republic Oskar Karkaroff, 65, Father, Former Death Eater & Inmate of Azkaban Tesia Karkaroff, 62, Mother, Recluse Igor Karkaroff, Uncle, Former Death Eater and Headmaster of Durmstrang, Deceased Casimir Elias Karkaroff - 31, Older Brother, Owner of Borgin and Burkes @aleksander, 29, Older Brother anastasia marie karkaroff, 26, Younger Sister, Magical Interpol HISTORY Damian was born the third son of the once prestigious Karkaroff family, though the purebloods had rather fallen out of favour in the year leading up to his birth. As the youngest boy, his mother Tesia took a shine to him, insisting that he was perfect and wonderful and her little prince despite his father’s wrath. Her love for her youngest son would surpass her disdain for the only daughter in the family, who would be born just over a year after Damian. Damian learned and mastered strategy at his mothers knee, ultimately following her lead in the opinion that being a pureblood made one almost royalty. With Damian’s fathers arrest and subsequent prosecution, Tesia spiralled out of control and Damian’s eldest brother wrested control of the family. Though young, Cas proved a fair and just leader, so opposite to his mother who had always favoured Damian. Damian was not accustomed to being told no, to being instructed to do something against his own wishes. Eventually, Cas earned Damian’s begrudging respect as the younger son aged and realised how having connections to the Dark Lord’s failed coup diminished their popularity. Instead of rebelling, Damian found it easier to bend to his brother's will rather than break, and discovered he was better for it. He became increasingly interested in strategic thinking and reasoning - why would people say one thing and mean another? It was a lesson he learned from his brother, to hide one’s true nature. Perhaps if he had been older, Damian would have known that this particular lesson had come from his once sane and calculating mother. Even in his formative years, Damian asked questions and searched for the truth, demanding answers and being given information that he ought not know. When Cas went off to Durmstrang, his position of head of the family did not waver. The younger children were looked after by governesses, but ultimately Cas made the decisions. Respect for his brother, only four years older than him, engulfed Damian as he watched his brother navigate the tricky waters of education and nurturing his siblings. Though Damian still had a soft spot for his now reclusive mother, he started to see the error in her ways. Where Cas was fair, she had treated Damian’s siblings with an iron fist, refusing to bend or break where her rule was law. Rather than staunchly supporting his mother as he had in prior years, Damian decided instead to step back - it was easier to drift along in the background, spouting beliefs that had been forced on him for years, than to fight. Damian was quieter than his siblings, and when he was accepted and carted off to Durmstrang, that didn’t change. As a student, Damian hovered in the middle ground. He was clever, perhaps cleverer than most in his year. But rather than drawing attention to himself, Damian watched and listened. He kept notes in his head, tracking movements and following mysteries as they unravelled around him. He tucked away useful tidbits of information, knowing that in time, this could become useful. He didn’t draw much attention to himself, instead opting to focus his talent for listening into writing and eventually plucking away at the guitar. Music drowned out the thoughts in his head, allowing him to be calm even if it was just for a short while. Damian was a favourite to no one, with professors preferring the righteous Ana or the ever clever Aleksander and even the talented leader Cas. This suited Damian well. When Cas decided to hand the reins of the family to Aleksander, Damian said nothing. There was a twinge of betrayal, but as he had learned, Damian was to show nothing of his hand. Instead, he continued on as usual. When Damian graduated from Durmstrang, it came as no surprise that he put his talents to good use. He started writing for the Hungarian version of the Daily Prophet, first as an intern then as a regular contributor. His skills allowed him to travel and write about various goings on in both the magical and muggle world, and Damian found that this suited him well. He had wanted to fade into the background, to avoid prestige and intrigue while he collected his secrets and information. While Cas had left the temptations of treasure hunting in favour of something more influential and involved, only Ana followed the eldest Karkaroff to the United Kingdom. Damian chose instead his steady role at the Hungarian Post, one which allowed him to do as he pleased as his mother had done so many years before. Eventually, Damian traded this role for something he could control even more - self employing as a travel writer. It didn’t pay quite as well, but what did Damian need for money? He had, after all, found a much more valuable currency. At long last, the time for Damian to settle came to pass. He decided to join his siblings in the UK, easily slotting into a role at the Daily Prophet due to his convincing yet flowery writing. His upbringing and refusal to take sides led Damian to sympathise with the Purifiers, but never took an active role. Instead, he focused on learning what he could about the vigilante organisation, and the Order of the Phoenix that rose to combat them. Damian never knew that his siblings were involved in the latter organisation, their mistrust unfortunately well placed. The turmoil that the Purifiers caused gave Damian much to write about, ranging from explosions at Kings Cross and the Quidditch World Cup to the death of various Ministers for Magic and the breakout and breakdown of the wizarding prison Azkaban. Damian was enthralled by the politics of it all, leading him to take an active interest in something for the first time in his life. Damian led the investigation of Granger’s replacement, another Durmstrang alum and former Quidditch star Viktor Krum. Damian helped to uncover the lack of effort and movement from the ministry, ultimately uprooting the minister in favour of one who would take more decisive action. When the Purifiers ultimately showed their hand some months after this particular event, Damian was unruffled but pleased that he had never been openly supportive of the movement. They had failed just as the Dark Lord had, nearly thirty years on. And who had played an important part in uncovering the mystery other than his younger sister. Damian held a strange sense of pride that Ana had made such a case and name for herself, and though he has resumed his casual existence in the world, he knows that the Karkaroffs have learned their lesson well - to listen, to think, and never, ever to act first.
