August 31, 2026 Paris, France It had been years since she had been to France, but Nessa, the young woman from the orphanage whose remaining year of education she was funding, was about to go off to Beauxbatons. Not agreeing to go to Paris to take her shopping for her school supplies seemed as though it might come across as callous, and Xiulan prepared herself to travel not just to Diagon Alley but to Place Cachée, the French city's equivalent. Luckily, at least, Paris wasn't far from London; she would only be there for the day. She had made it through her trip to Hy-Brasil even though that had been longer and without many of the comforts that she was used to having in her daily life. The one good thing about Paris, apart from not having to risk anything in front of the non-magical community there, was that it was certainly luxurious, though even Xiulan had toned down her typing way of dressing to blend in with the French.
Having arranged to meet up with Nessa in front of the wand shop to ensure that they would be able to find one another, Xiulan reminded herself that she would be in no real danger but went the extra step and notified the French Ministry of Magic that she was a Seer—just in case. If anything happened, she didn't want Nessa to have to be the one to deal with it. That wasn't fair to her.
She arrived earlier than necessary, having wanted to scope things out in advance, but was relieved to find that the shopping district hadn't changed much from how she remembered it when she had been there with her late husband. That was good, at least, and Xiulan was equally relieved that she wasn't about to have a repeat of the incident in the British Ministry from the previous August. She was able to hold herself upright without a problem—all the better to keep an eye out for Nessa. That, in itself, was going to be a challenge. There were lots of teenagers around, though none were Nessa. It would have been even harder had she not met Nessa previously, Xiulan knew; she at least knew what Nessa looked like, and it wasn't long before she spotted her.

▲ France. Place Cachée. Who would've guessed that she would be the lucky winner of some grant/charity of sorts? And it wasn't from Blishwick this time. Nessa had almost assumed that was going to happen but she couldn't blame the man for forgetting about her when he'd set Nate up so well and had a new business to run. It almost made it easier that way, because she didn't want to feel too indebted to him in the long run. She could always garner more favor after finishing school. A job at the pizza place or running errands for him. Easy stuff like that. Bullying Nate into letting her crash on his sofa until she could get herself fully situated sounded like it would be pretty easy to pull off too. In place of Blishwick was Mrs. Zhou. Some other wealthy socialite from what Nessa could gather during their initial meeting. The woman wanted to essentially bankroll the money for supplies this year, which from what she understood, the orphanage sort of needed after housing all of the American students during the country-wide lockdown the previous summer. That had drawn enough attention to it that the younger kids were being adopted out and the ones like her (in which there were very few) had sponsors for this next year of schooling. With Hogwarts burned and crumbling, everyone was everywhere. Nessa had assumed most would end up at Beauxbatons due to its proximity to the UK, though she hadn't heard much from her few acquaintances throughout the summer months. Not that she truly cared about that. She'd rather be working than dealing with social gatherings, and had she turned eighteen this past weekend instead of the upcoming one, that may have been an actual possibility. Instead it was one more year of school for her. Place Cachée wasn't much different than Diagon and its surrounding shopping districts, though it certainly felt French. Whatever that meant. Her experience with France was this and this alone, and being dropped off by an employee of the orphanage who had to help the younger kids going to Beauxbatons get their supplies, Nessa was left to find her sponsor. Supposedly they were supposed to meet by the wand shop, though that was proving to be difficult because none of the signs were in English. Obviously. Wandering around and staring into each shop window with cupped hands over eyes, Nessa was able to pick out a book shop, apothecary, and what looked to be a candy store as well. She had extremely little pocket change to her name, but that would be worth a look around later if she had the chance. The next part of her adventure brought her closer to a sign that read 'BAGUETTES MAGIQUES...' with a couple other words that she didn't really know. One clearly meant magic, and she knew baguettes were the fancy long bread that came in paper bags. She'd never had one, but if this place was selling magical bread, she wanted to see it. Her walk towards the magic bread place was brought to an abrupt stop when she realized that her sponsor was standing right near it. Swearing to herself now that she had to actually get school stuff done and act grateful, Nessa corrected her direction slightly to head towards the woman. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France Xiulan didn't really speak French, either, but she knew enough to work things out from context clues. Thinking about it for a moment, she wasn't sure if Nessa had traveled outside of the United Kingdom before—apart from Ireland, maybe—but she realized that it must have been incredibly strange for her. There were spells that could be used for translation and interpretation, but one couldn't just expect to rely on those when in an environment where practically everyone spoke a different language (if not two or three different languages). She was fairly used to it, speaking and working in English more than in her native language, but she was in her thirties and not a teenager.
She smiled as Nessa approached her, not wanting the girl to think that she wasn't happy to see her. She was, but she was also aware of how strange it was—and how strange it would probably look for a grown woman and a teenage girl of separate races to be walking around a city that was foreign to them both. (There was a perfectly valid explanation, of course, but even providing that explanation put Nessa in the awkward position of having to reveal that she was an orphan.) They could hope that not everyone would be quite so nosy, and Xiulan was prepared to lie if necessary to keep Nessa from feeling uncomfortable.
"Nessa," Xiulan greeted her warmly. "I'm glad that you didn't have trouble finding me." It could have taken a while, potentially; Xiulan didn't carry a mobile phone, so making a telephone call would have been out of the question. "How are you?"

▲ Eventually she would have found Xiulan, assuming the woman had stayed in one place and Nessa wandered from storefront to storefront. There didn't seem to be any obvious offshoots and alleyways like Diagon had, so that kept the majority of the foot traffic to the square. On a normal day, it would probably be a quaint little district, magically closed off to the world in its compact form. She wasn't sure if she liked it more than home yet, but it certainly scratched that itch of wanting to escape London and the UK. For that reason alone, she was more willing to play nice today. There weren't a lot of supplies she needed for Beauxbatons, aside from new uniforms (though she'd packed her Hogwarts robes and Slytherin garb) and books. "Morning," she responded lazily, a yawn that she didn't realize was there escaping from her at the same time. The orphanage had her up a lot earlier than usual because there had been a portkey set up for them. Unfortunately it was the same for tomorrow too, so after shopping was complete she had to go back and pack everything for the following morning. It would had been loads easier if they had just let her kick back in a hotel room. In the orphanages defense, they probably figured she'd make a run for it if left on her own. They probably would have been right. "Sort of was on accident," she explained about finding Xiulan. "I've never seen magic bread before so, yeah..." Nessa tried to lean around her sponsor to see through the window of Baguettes Magique, but failed to do so because of a crowd looping out of the shop and around the front. Must be the best fucking bread in France, she thought to herself before turning her attention back to Xiulan. "Never been here before. It's sort of a lot at once," Nessa admitted, much to her own shock. She could do crowds all day, but Paris was different and so was Place Cachée. If she had been forced to do this with the rest of her lot, it would have sucked. xiulan zhou ● 357 ● The Bottomless Perdition by Tomb Mold MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France Nessa admitted that she had found her by accident and mentioned that she had never seen magic bread before. That was a little bit strange for Xiulan to hear, until it dawned on her that the sign behind her mentioned "baguettes". That was in reference to wands, unfortunately, and not bread, though the misunderstanding was an understandable one to make. "Never been here before. It's sort of a lot at once."
Xiulan nodded her head, surprised that Nessa had been so open about her being overwhelmed. "Have you eaten breakfast yet?" she asked her, prompted by the subject of bread. "'Baguette' is also the word for wand in French, but there are lots of bakeries and cafés around." She intentionally didn't draw much attention to Nessa's error, though her mention of bread in the first place suggested that she probably had food on her mind. "We can get some food first, if you'd like." It would give them both some time to adjust to their surroundings—and Nessa even more so because she would be living in France for the year.

▲ Breakfast had coke and gone at the orphanage a few hours earlier, only because the little ones had to be fed before the school-aged group caught their portkey. That didn't mean Nessa was full still. She wasn't much of a breakfast person to begin with and portkey travel had a way with her stomach that was sort of unexplainable. In the few instances where she'd taken one, she was always inexplicably hungry after the fact. Most people felt like they had their intestines turned inside-out and became queasy. She was the opposite somehow. Maybe the tar from her frequent underage drinking and nicotine addiction had made a fine coating along her insides already, making her impervious to the magical twist of the portkey teleportation. It was safe to already assume that apparition would be the same for her, since any time she'd done side-along it was basically the same. Being subpar in all other forms of magic, it was cool to be the only young person standing after being yanked through space and time to a different country. And bragging rights meant everything for her. Especially at the orphanage. Xiulan explained that baguettes, at least in this instance, meant wand. Nessa immediately felt stupid for assuming that there was such a thing as magical bread (though there very well still could be!), and huffed a bit at her mistake. Cafés were aplenty here though, and she had spotted a number of them during her trip towards the wand shop. She knew that was a French word at least, and they'd probably have actual bread there. Plus, getting a free meal out of the lady wouldn't hurt. That was what she was here for after all. "May as well. The list they gave me for supplies was sort of confusing. Figured it could take a while to find everything..." Especially if all the store names were as misleading as the Magical Bread one. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France "May as well," Nessa replied. "The list they gave me for supplies was sort of confusing. Figured it could take a while to find everything."
That wouldn't be a problem. Between the two of them, they would figure it out. "Okay. Maybe we can find a café and then look at the list?" Xiulan suggested. She assumed that most of what Nessa needed for the school year would be about the same as what she had needed for Hogwarts. There probably would be some different books in there, and of course there would be the different uniforms. Even things like quills, Xiulan guessed, would be a necessity in the wake of the fire. It wasn't anything that she wasn't happy to take care of, though. That was what she was there for.
"You're welcome to choose where we eat," Xiulan added. Wherever looked good to Nessa, she didn't mind spending the money, and it was better than the reverse. If she happened to pick somewhere that would have been out of the realm of possibility for Nessa under normal circumstances and made her feel awful because of it, Xiulan knew that she would feel horrible for it. The key was to make things as comfortable as possible for Nessa. She could push aside her own concerns.

▲ Sitting down and taking a look over the supplies list was probably the best course of action. Nessa was used to not having a lot of things to begin with, the majority of her few personal belongings having gone up in flames with Hogwarts, so having to start from scratch on school materials was definitely interesting. At least she had her wand and a set of robes still, and the couple of books that had been in her bag the night of the fire. Not being hungry that night had certainly paid off, especially when it came to an early escape from the castle. Old textbooks were, quite frankly, useless to her at this point because she either knew the material or didn't. Clothes were clothes and had been hand-me-downs already, and the only major loss of her belongings was a stone collection that she had kept going for as long as she could remember. Completely worthless to everyone else, but it hadn't been worth enough to mourn over long term. There were millions of stones out there. She could start new. Not all of her classmates could do that though, and she sort of empathized when it came to pets and items of importance. But she never made those sentiments known, because it was honestly an inconvenience and waste of time. No one would believe she was truly sorry over those sorts of losses. Looking around for a café, she realized that it was sort of up to her to choose because there were at least half a dozen shop fronts that looked to be restaurants of some sort. The closest was a Café Abringer, and Nessa pointed at it. "That one work?" she asked as she started walking towards it. There was outdoor seating, and for a late August day, the perfect conditions to sit at. That would probably appease her sponsor a bit. Rich people liked fancy coffee shops, right? xiulan zhou ● 323 ● Kingslayer (feat. BABYMETAL) by Bring Me The Horizon MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France Nessa wasn't indecisive when it came to choosing somewhere to eat, looked in the direction of the nearest café, and asked if it would work. It was Café Abringer, and even Xiulan knew it to be an established café in the city. She had no qualms about going there and nodded her head in response to Nessa's question. It was the quintessential Parisian café, and the outdoor seating there would work for their purposes if Nessa preferred that.
Xiulan followed Nessa as she walked ahead in the direction of the café and its red awning. "Perfect. Would you like to sit outside or inside?" she asked her. "Either works for me." She was trying to avoid asking Nessa a million questions, but it was hard when neither of them really knew one another. It wasn't that Xiulan was walking on eggshells because of Nessa, but she was well aware that they came from very different backgrounds.

▲ Were French cafés even the same as the ones back home? She'd always heard things about the actual thing and couldn't figure out what the big deal was. Coffee was coffee no matter where you went, and whether or not baked goods were quality was honestly so subjective that she really didn't care as long as she could eat. There were people sitting outside already, and she realized that it was most likely about the atmosphere of it all. Hang out in the magical shopping district as floating coffee pots topped your cup off every twenty minutes. Bougie shit like that. To be fair, she could get used to that once she had more than a handful of galleons to her name. There were a couple little places in Diagon and Horizont that could substitute for this easily. Not nearly as scenic, but it was all the same at the end of the day. And when it was being bankrolled by some rich broad trying to make herself feel good? Absolutely zero complaints from Nessa on that front. If this had happened a few years ago, she probably would have tried to warm up to the woman and see if she'd take guardianship of her. That wouldn't work now, considering the ink would still be wet as her eighteenth birthday rolled around on Saturday. "Outside," Nessa answered briskly as she made her way to a table. There seemed to be waitstaff, though the concept of a restaurant was still sort of foreign to her. This didn't happen for her at all. Ever. The scraping of the wrought iron chair legs along the cobblestone pavers cut through the café chatter but didn't draw any looks of disdain. If she hadn't been trying to be on her best behavior, she would have done that a few more times just to be a nuisance. Picking it up under her as she squeezed up to the table, the shopping list was removed from her pocket and spread out onto the table in front of her. She had to push down on the creases in the paper with her thumb a few times to keep it from folding itself up again.m but finally got it to a point where it looked flat. "I think I saw the bookstore already. Apparently they have copies in English for all the Hogwarts students." At the same time, she would've loved to get French copies so that she could use it as an excuse to not do work. Having to send in the wrong copy for a new one would get her out of a couple days of work at least... MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France "Outside." That was quick enough, and Nessa moved to an available table. Xiulan would have pulled out Nessa's seat for her, but she had already done so for herself, and so she sat down across from her and adjusted her chair so that they could continue their conversation.
Nessa set something upon the table, and Xiulan realized that it was her list of school supplies from Beauxbatons. "I think I saw the bookstore already," she added. "Apparently they have copies in English for all the Hogwarts students."
"That's excellent, Nessa. We'll look for them and buy any that are available in English," Xiulan assured her, though she couldn't see what was on the list from where she was sitting. It would be a lot easier on Nessa if she could get books in English instead of having to translate every last word, and she didn't want her to have to worry about that if it wasn't necessary. "It would be a good idea to buy a dictionary, too," Xiulan continued, "just in case you need it." English wasn't her native language, so she knew from that perspective that it would be useful to Nessa to have a dictionary on hand. "And then we'll make sure that you have some extra uniform items." She didn't mind going above and beyond what Nessa needed to ensure that she didn't have to "make do" with the minimum. If anything got stained or torn, she didn't want Nessa to have to live with it. "Anything that you had at Hogwarts that you need to replace, just tell me. I'm sure Beauxbatons couldn't anticipate everything."

▲ Despite being in Paris right now, Nessa had completely forgotten already that starting tomorrow, she was attending a different school. A French school. There were other Hogwarts students going, so it wasn't like she was going to be left out when it came to not knowing the language of her new school. As far as she could gather, English was fairly common and had been with those that visited for the Triwizard Tournament a few years ago. Of course, they were all dead now so that didn't really mean anything. Essentially, a dictionary was a good idea. Nessa produced a pen from her pocket and scribbled the additional book onto the list with the rest. If all else failed, she could just play stupid about not knowing. Similar to her thoughts on getting the wrong books. Now that the dictionary had been brought up though, she was sure Xiulan would go out of her way to find one. In addition to the books, the woman offered to get whatever she needed for the uniform. Did that mean more stuff than what she'd already had? Nessa stared at her sponsor sort of dumbly, afraid for a moment that she was mimicking a goldfish with her mouth, before slowly nodding her head that she understood. "Its not like I had much to begin with. Just school supplies and robes," she shrugged. The stone collection wasn't something that could be bought in a shop, and her personal belongings past that consisted of cigarettes and pilfered bottles of alcohol. Their loss wasn't consequential nor important to her. "I always keep anything important with me. The other kids at the orphanage get used to toys being communal, so they don't always understand going through my stuff isn't the same," Nessa explained. That meant her flip lighter or pocket knife, which in the hands of a five year old were obviously dangerous. Xiulan didn't need to know about those though. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France Xiulan found it hard to remember that Nessa had spent most of her life without much in the way of possessions—at least not possessions that were hers and hers alone—until she saw her mouth agape. "I always keep anything important with me," she clarified. "The other kids at the orphanage get used to toys being communal, so they don't always understand going through my stuff isn't the same."
"If you feel more comfortable carrying everything with you, I can look into purchasing a bag with an Undetectable Extension Charm?" Xiulan considered without any hesitation. "Your trunk shouldn't be a problem, but a satchel or a backpack…? It wouldn't be ready in time for tomorrow, but I could have it sent to you at Beauxbatons—"
Her thoughts were interrupted as a waiter approached their table, realized that they didn't have menus, and promptly returned with menus for the two of them that he then set in front of them.
"Merci," Xiulan thanked him. She was sure that it would be a moment before either of them figured out what they wanted to order.
The menus, Xiulan realized, were in French. In order to remedy that, she pulled out her wand, muttered an incantation, and tapped Nessa's menu before doing the same to her own. "Choose whatever you'd like."

▲ Why had she never thought of using an extension charm on her bag before? While it did ultimately solve the problem of keeping her things on her at al times, it was also sort of double-edged: lose the bag, and then everything is gone. If her school bag poofed out of existence one morning, she'd lose a book or two, quills, homework, and a her tiny knick-knacks that always filled the bottom of the bag in the worst, uneven manner. Hardly a crucial loss for her. But a bag with an extension charm was actually worth something. Real, tangible value. Nessa couldn't even begin to contemplate what something like that was actually capable of because she simply didn't own enough things for it to ever be useful. "That might be more of a hind-" She was cut off by the waiter stepping in, and despite them having to retreat for menus, Nessa waited patiently to continue after the fact. Xiulan thanked the him and immediately tapped both of the menus, the words and letters jumbling together in a hurry, until everything was readable in English. She really needed to learn that charm. Looking around at other café patrons, she figured that coffee was the best option for a drink and the little picture of a croque monsieur made it seem like it was edible. That dish was translated, but she'd heard of it before. "The bag might be a hinderance," Nessa finally completed her thought now that she had chosen her food. "I'd rather not lose everything all at once again if something ever happened to the bag..." She thought that was fairly reasonable. Starting over again with nothing after having barely anything was annoying. Having to do it a second time after someone threw money at her to help out? That would be like fate slapping both of them in the face and saying it wasn't meant to be. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

August 31, 2026 Paris, France Although she began to say something, Nessa, too, was cut off by the sudden appearance of the waiter. "The bag might be a hindrance," she stated once she was able to speak without interruption. "I'd rather not lose everything all at once again if something ever happened to the bag…"
"I understand." Xiulan didn't mind that she had turned the offer down. "We won't do that, then." If Nessa didn't think that it would be helpful for her to have—and that it might possibly cause her to worry about losing her belongings that much more—then it wasn't worth it. It had been difficult enough just to uproot from Macao to London, though she hadn't lost all of what she owned in the process, at least. She had things by which to remember Aloysius, and she was grateful for that, though her helping Nessa wasn't just a reminder that her life's circumstances could have been much worse. "Is there anything else that might be helpful?" she pondered. "A Remembrall? Something like that?" The downside to a Remembrall was that it could only let someone know that they had forgotten something; it couldn't actually clarify what it was that they had forgotten. "We can check the shops, too," Xiulan added. She wasn't sure what would be available offhand, but there were probably items available that hadn't been popular when she was Nessa's age.
Taking a second to glance at the menu, it took Xiulan no time to determine what she wanted, but she looked back over at Nessa to check that she wasn't having any problems with what was available. "Have you decided what you want to order?" She didn't want Nessa to feel rushed, but she hoped that she had found something to her liking.
