Rob tore his gaze from his mate, running his fingers along the spines of the books. "How different it was for us. I wanted to be in school, and you didn't. And here we are, together. Two lines connected," he muttered, more to himself than anything. But Lyra went on to describe her transformations at school, and his hand curled into a claw. His face crumpled as he turned quickly to her. "They locked you away?" asked Rob, his voice sharper than he had intended. "And how is anyone supposed to develop normally with that sort of treatment," he growled.
"Do they still do that? The cells? I'd never heard of that before," Rob added, tamping down the rage that swirled within him. He imagined Lyra in there, dark and alone and scared. He wished he could have broken her out, that they could have found one another sooner. But there was no changing the past, only looking towards the future. Lyra described how she hated being at school - completely opposite to Rob's predilection for it. He took a deep breath, steadying himself. "And then what?" asked Rob. "What did you do when you left school?" For Rob, it was nearly impossible to fathom a life without the education he had received at Beauxbatons. They took exams in their sixth year rather than fifth and seventh, but Rob had gleaned much from his potions professor, had formed a unique bond with people who somehow trusted him despite his affliction. His schooling had shaped him into the man he was today.
Rob knew Lyra was trying to lighten the mood somewhat, but the conversation left a sour taste in Rob's mouth. He ran his fingers through his hair, messing it more than usual. He had always been clever, always near the top of the class. It was something he had taken for granted as a youth, then actively strived for as a teen. And now, he had been granted an Order of Merlin, second class, due to his work with Sienna.
"Heleen won't say anything," said Rob gruffly, pulling a book out from the shelf at random and sitting on the sofa with a heaviness he couldn't quite shake. Rob cracked open the book and said nothing for a few moments, still simmering with discontent at Lyra's treatment and subsequent decision making. He knew she had grown, leaps and bounds since those days at school. She had ultimately made the decision to leave the allure of illegal duelling behind, and cherished their relationship above all. Just as he did. But something about her tale didn't sit right with Rob.
"I've got koek!" said Johannes jubilantly, toting a tray filled with sliced lemon cake. "Lyra, you try," he added, shoving the tray in her face. Jocelyn lingered in the doorway and Rob shot her a questioning look before she sauntered in, sitting primly on a chair by the fire. Jocelyn turned to Lyra. "I hear you have done much travelling, Lyra," she started hesitantly. Rob bit his cheek. He had told his mother as much, but not why she travelled so much.

At first she smile, at the thoughts of how different they were. Maybe they were made to balance each other out. Her being the Ying to Rob's Yang, however as he rounded on her about her transformation her smile faded away to nothing. A more sheepish look took over as she shrugged " Well, not cells exactly, but small rooms. You'd get your final dose of Wolfsbane and be locked in for safety, then they'd open it again in the morning when Sun was up so to be sure you'd definitely changed back. It was a long night I guess. But it worked. I was safe away from people. I just tried to sleep through it mostly. Same thing I did when I left school. I've always locked myself away after taking my Wolfsbane. The only time I haven't was when I could afford Wolfsbane..." dropping her gaze she went quiet, shameful of those times and not keen to discuss it. But then with another half hearted shrug she paused. "I don't know if it's still what they do. Maybe it's changed now with Awarewolf managing the symptoms better.." That gave pause for a very faint smile. Although opposed to it at first over safety concerns and downright terror, she'd come around to it, and ultimately been extremely proud of Rob and his accomplishments over it. "When I left school?" Poised almost as a question again, she repeated Rob as if buying some time to think it over. "Well nothing I guess. I just sort of moved around a lot. Sometimes duelled sometimes didn't. Did other things I'm not entirely proud of to survive, you know that. I don't want to talk about that Robbie. I survived. That was it..." Her tone was low as she still avoided his gaze out of shame. That wasn't even the full extent of it, not really. Nibbling at her lip, she glanced into the fire again as she felt him settle beside her. The silence was heavy on her chest. Like she was being judged, or that he didn't like the sound of her before they had met. Lyra didn't entirely blame him. She didn't really like that version of herself either, but she also knew she couldn't change her past. Block it out yet, but change it no. In silence, now crippling her chest, she nodded as Rob reiterated Heleen would keep their little secret. The silence was a crippling weight on her chest. It restricted her breathing as she felt the distaste emanating from Rob. He was sat so close but suddenly felt so distant. Although her throat felt like it was closing up, she opened her mouth in some vain attempt to make the words come. When the door swung open, she initially wasn't sure if she was thankful foe the intrusion or not. But then, she supposed, at least the interruption had broke the silence. Forcing a smile, she was unaware of the anxiety that still showed in her face. For a moment she thought she should jump up and stand, though she wasn't quite sure why. The way Jocleyn stood by made her even more uncomfortable. In an attempt to ignore it, she gave Johannes a small smile and took some of the cake offered. The dry sponge likely would make her mouth feel worse, but she couldn't reject his unbounding kindness, and took one anyway. She held it in her hand for a moment, noticing Jocelyn had sat opposite her. It made her slightly more uneasy but she tried not to let it show, still feigning a smile. Except her question caught her off guard, and for a moment her smile faltered. "Well..." she began with slow words, choosing them carefully, she gave a quiet laugh to try and lighten the mood slightly. "I've never been quite the academic. My twin brother got the brains in our arrangement I guess. I left school when I was young, not long after I was bitten.." hesitating for a moment she was anxiously scanning for any sort of reaction to that before she went on. "My Papa is originally Hungarian. I was brought up speaking it, so originally I lived there for a while, but I've mostly just moved around. Never really settling down or finding a home..." trailing off into silence, she gave a small shrug. That was it indeed. She left the sad end to her story and decided to signal that was it by indulging herself with the cake instead. Even if it was slightly drier than she hoped for, she didn't care it gave her something to do and to concentrate on. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Even as Lyra explained away his disdain, Rob remained indignant. "Still, sounds like cells to me," he grumbled. Wolfsbane let the wolf maintain their own human mind, and there was absolutely no need for locking up in small rooms. At Beauxbatons, he'd been granted a special garden to transform in, though he often had curled up and gone to sleep. He'd never forgotten a dose of Wolfsbane, and that was part of the reason why he had been so keen to work on Aware Wolf with Sienna. He rubbed his forehead, trying to iron out the crease that formed there. Rob heaved a great sigh. "I sure hope it's better. Wolfsbane worked well as a preliminary treatment, and Aware Wolf built on those foundations. We are moving forward with it, not backwards," said Rob. He wasn't keen on continuing he conversation, and was grateful when his parents returned with cake.
Rob's mind swirled with what Lyra had said. He thought he'd known his mate so well, but it turned out he was still learning. They had much work to do, and this trip was meant to help with that. Not make things worse. But a sour taste lingered in Rob's mouth as his father offered Lyra cake and his mother made a timid effort to engage with Lyra. "Oh, Epke has always been very academic. I am sure he will help if you endeavour to study more," said Jocelyn. "Though I must say he has never been much of a traditional learner, so to speak." His mother shot Rob a sidelong glance and he grimaced. She knew he hated being called Epke - Lyra only used a horrid pronunciation of his name when she was cross.
"But you're found a home now," Rob interrupted suddenly, tightening his grip around his mate. "Here with us!" crowed Johannes. Rob and Jocelyn both frowned at his outburst. "I mean... mum, dad. Lyra isn't just my girlfriend. She's my mate." Rob gave his parents a hard look. They looked both shocked and confused. "Like dogs? Wolves>" asked his mother in Dutch. The primordial beast within Rob growled. "No, like us. Werewolves. Nobody knows much about it. But it's a deeper bond than anything. I can't describe it," said Rob, glancing over at Lyra, feeling very much that he had completely botched the news. He just felt so on edge.

Slipping into a silence, she let Rob settle in beside her on the plush chair; unsure of what else there was to be said. She knew what she had said ultimately hadn't sat well with Rob, but there had been no point in hiding things, he was sure to find out eventually about her past. She was slow to be forthcoming with it of course, but she would tell him pieces here and there for now. Instead she nodded quietly and gave his knee a small squeeze of affection & hoped it would be enough to encapsulate her love and pride of him. With a small smile she nodded in agreement with Jocelyn. "Rob's a smarty pants. Anyone with two eyes can see that. But now we all know about it after his award. His breakthrough is proof of that for definite." She was careful to purposely use Rob, rather than Epke, pausing only to take a sip of her water and not let her eyes flick to Jocelyn to check for any signs of a reaction. Instead she leaned forward to place her glass on a coaster on the coffee table in front of her while she let that point settle into the air. Squeezing Rob's knee affectionately again, with her free hand she reached forward for the second half of her slice of lemon cake. When Johannes made the declaration of her now being home with them, she smiled through a full mouth and tried to be polite about it while half choking out of embarrassment. Her cheeks pinkened slightly but she was able to play it down regardless in some bashful sense of gratefulness. But as Rob went on to divulge the true nature of their bond, the lemon cake dried up in her mouth and stuck in her throat. Eyes widening out of double sense of panic, she began to cough. They hadn't talked about this. She didn't think this was going to come out right now, if ever. She assumed it would have been better kept as their little secret, but no. Rob had spilled those beans. Oh dear. Coughing maniacally she tried to clear her throat. Johannes, even in his confusion, had sensed her distress and leapt forward and pushed her glass of water into her hand so she could take a drink and try and clear it. But it was like despite trying to wash the dry cake down, her throat only tightened at the tone of Jocelyn's voice. It wasn't in a language she understood, but she understood the tone of course. Even as Rob spoke again, she felt herself getting redder in the face and even though the cake crumbs had been washed down, she was left feeling strapped for air. As her cough subsided, she took deep breaths, trying to calm herself from what Rob had just done. Although reeling, and she felt her heart drumming in her chest with strong palpitations, some part of her, deep down, was glad he had said it. He wasn't ashamed of her. Slowly her hand snaked down to settle on his knee again, this time to be reassuring. Even if she wasn't happy it was out there, she felt just about as uncomfortable as ever, she supposed it couldn't get any worse than this. Eventually she managed a rather lame nod, and took another sip of water before setting it down and smiling shyly. "Uh-huh. That's us. As strange as it sounds, something brought us together, and it’s wonderful. I'm glad for it. I love Rob very much. Well more than that I suppose. That's rather underestimating it really but..." as she began to ramble along, her heavy slavic accent began to slide in, like it always did when she began to ramble uncomfortably like this. Pulling herself to a stop, she was able to compose herself some and reign it in just slightly. "That's us" she repeated again, this time with more of a brazen smile, glancing to Rob. Lyra's unwavering confidence in him and his capabilities settled in Rob like a pleasant weight. It warmed him from the inside out, hearing her talk about him like this. Like he could take on anything. And he quite possibly could, especially with her by his side. They were more inseparable than ever, even despite the slight hiccough earlier this year regarding her duelling. But like adults, they'd come to terms with their difference and reached a compromise. Though the thought of Lyra getting hurt struck the fear of God into Rob, he trusted her ability as much as she did.
Fed up with his mother's frostiness, Rob burst out about the true nature of their bond. His mother was shocked and his father looked confused - she spurted out something about being like dogs, and Rob hastened to correct her, an edge of anger to his voice. They weren't dogs. They had a special sort of magic running through their veins. And now that they'd found each other, there was no way they'd be separated again. "So you can get off your high horse mum. And if you're not happy, we can leave," Rob ground out, his usually friendly hazel eyes steely. There was a long stretch of silence where mother glared at son, before Jocelyn finally relented. She swept wordlessly from the room, and the tension broke as Lyra gulped down water. "Are you alright?" asked Rob, turning his attention to his mate. She managed to get a few words out in explanation, but the topic had passed. "Do not worry about her. She doesn't like change!" boomed Johannes, and Rob grinned gratefully at his father.
"So, Lyra. Do you have any special requests for today? We will give gifts this evening. But anything you like, we can help," said Johannes. "I think we're alright, why don't you check that mum isn't having a heart attack," said Rob to his father, before returning his attention to Lyra. He searched her gaze for a long moment, then took her delicate hand in his. "I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me," he murmured, running his thumb along the top of her hand. "I'm glad you stopped choking though."

Slowly her grip tightened on his knee, at first unable to say anything more. She was still aghast at just how easily Rob had came out with it. She knew it had been rather unplanned and it wasn't at all how she would have chosen to tell his parents; if at all. But part of her was pleased it was out there now. Even if it did seem to make his mother hate her even more, especially if that outburst was anything to go off of. Squeezing at Rob's knee rather tightly now, she likened it to some sort of anchorage in the bizarre situation that had just unfolded. Swallowing the uneasy feeling that was rising in her gut at what had happened, she tried to ignore it. Pretend like it hadn't really happened. But it was hard to forget the way Rob's mother had looked at them both; like they were many dogs. The sharpness to Rob's tone she had liked, but still, it made the uncertainty of this first visit to her in laws all a little worse. As Jocelyn swept in a hurry from the room, Lyra exhaled just slightly, but still wasn't exactly at ease. She wasn't surprised when Johannes tried in his cheery tone to make it all better, he was the one Rob had so obviously inherited his good heart from. But as the shape of Rob's father too left the room after some gentle direction from Rob, he got the hint and knew they were to be left alone to discuss what had just happened. She felt further relief. Just her and Rob now. Back to how it always was. Nibbling her bottom lip, she hadn't realised just how tight she had been gripping the spot above her beloved's knee, talon like nails about to burst through the denim of his jeans. But his thumb tracing along her hand brought her back, reminded her to loosen just a little, and with that, to breathe. Taking a breath, she tilted her head to look back up at him, and gave a shaky nod. "S'ok, I just...I just really wasn't expecting that I guess. I mean it makes sense to tell them, but I wasn't quite ready for that I guess." Pushing her lips into a more thoughtful pout, she gave a quiet laugh. "At least we know she properly hates me though. You've given her proper reason to now I suppose." Her gaze dropped away from his then, into the fire again. It wasn't the first time she had felt uneasy over telling people the true nature of their bond, but she supposed, it was the first time she had felt so unprepared, and it was the first time it had gone so badly. She settle into a quiet for a moment, internally mulling over what had just happened, the whole time subconsciously keeping contact between her hand and his leg still. "I'm glad your dad's so nice though. I can see where you get it from I guess." With a small smile she glanced to him again. "I used to be a daddy's girl I guess. So the fact one does like me again is pretty nice..." Leaning forward she reached for another sup of her water, letting another little part of her past hang in the air for him to digest further while she busied herself. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Rob sighed deeply, unsure for a moment of what to say. "No. It's not hatred. I don't believe my mum is capable of hatred," he reasoned after a moment. "It's more... you're different. Different from what she expected. Like me," he added with a sly grin. He laid a gentle hand upon Lyra's, loosening her vice like grip on him. "You know them now. But I haven't returned here for a long time. I travelled, perhaps in more comfort than you, for years. And then I followed Halo to England. I haven't really looked back since," said Rob. "But I... I want a family. Maybe not mine, and maybe not yours. But maybe... one of our own?" Rob hadn't broached this topic since they'd seen Rhys at the Samhain festival. He wasn't sure why he brought it up now.
"My father is a kind but weak man. Understandable, with the force of nature that my mother is. But he is surprisingly well connected, though I suppose he did learn at my mother's knee for years before they were married, and since," he added with a chuckle. Rob chewed on the inside of his cheek as he mulled over Lyra's comment - used to be. Even after all this time, there were still so many things he didn't know. About her, about her past... he'd picked up bits and pieces, but still, there were gaps to fill. "Well, you have the chance to be again," said Rob quietly.
There was a racket from the kitchen and Rob's father poked his head into the library once more. "I'd clear out for a few hours if I were you. Why don't you take Lyra to a cafe?" said his father tightly. Rob glanced to Lyra. "I can show you around the city a bit. And we'll come back in a few hours for dinner," he clarified as his father disappeared again. "We'll be okay. We're together."

Lyra had been around enough to know what it was like to be disliked. Maybe Rob was right and his mother didn't truly hate her, but it likely wasn't far off that. She was quiet, unsure of what to say in response. Eventually she just nodded. Did his mother think that if he had brought home a non-werewolf it would make it all ok? It would turn the beast side of him away? Preposterous. Her eye roll was barely there, but it happened still. She remained quiet as she listened to Rob speak about how it had been a while since he'd been here with his disjointed family. His closing line caught her off guard. No her silence was a more stunned one. Her mouth drying up as she was unable to coax any words out. After a few seconds of watching his hesitant smile, she was able to come up with something. "I don't know Rob....maybe.." She was a lot more unsure of it than he was. Her unspoken fears still plagued her. At times they moved through her mind and felt too ridiculous to even address with her mate. But still, the bitter taste of the possibility of siring more monsters is what kept her on edge. Taking a breath, she moved on from the seemingly closed chapter of the conversation and bit down on her lip. "I like him still. He's a nice man." And that was enough for her. Even more so as his head bobbed back in to advise the pair to clear the house. Whatever altercation or disagreement was going on now, whatever she had caused, she supposed she better get moving. Easily bending to Rob's will, she nodded. Unsure of what else to say, or what apology to offer up she lamely just ended with "Sure. Let's go Robbie"
