Mid-day December 24th 2026 Their reunion had been tentative still. While they were miles ahead of where they had been in October, things were still fragile enough between them. They had gone back and started again. Fresh like new lovers, they had learned about each others body's all over again. And in a way they had never taken time to before, they had learned things about each other in a more unhurried way. Gradually Rob had been able to coax Lyra back to a level of intimacy that was elevated from where they had been before; it wasn't so much that they had learned to love each other again, not that had never gone away, but they had learned a different more solid way through. With a plan to move forward at a slower pace, Lyra hadn't exactly moved back in with Rob, but she had had a few longer weekends at his flat (their flat??). Staying with him was always elating, but being able to have her own space and independence again was key. It was likely on the cards that she would be back living there soon. Rob had asked of course, but she had danced around the subject; never able to give a solid answer one way or the other. In truth, on some level she was still scared of being hurt again. She knew it was near impossible that it would happen again, but still. As she sat on the couch in Rob's flat, she had her legs curled under her and she was smoothing out a non-existent crease in her jeans. She has stayed over last night after they had spent the evening with Baileys hot chocolates and a Christmas film after they put up a rather miserable tree in the corner of the living room. The plan had been that they would get up, and after a lazy brunch they would Floo to Rob's parents house. But then there had been a hiccup in the plan and he had to go into the Apothecary for a bit. So instead Lyra had gotten up and taken her time in showering, and doing her hair along with picking her outfit out. When Rob had first asked her to come to The Netherlands for Christmas it had filled her with dread. Christmas was a difficult time of year for Lyra, previously it had been her favourite time when she got to see all her family, but since things had changed it had been hard. For their first Christmas together, Lyra had sort of forgotten that people outside their small bubble existed. She had wanted to relax with Rob alone, here in their little flat for now. The nerves had been eating at her since Rob had left this morning, promising instead that he would bring her lunch home before they left. So now the countdown was on, and even though she had put so much work into her looks, still she fidgeted uneasily wondering was it ok. Well, that along with worrying over everything else. Letting her eyes flick to the clock, she paused and wondered if Rob would be back soon. Slowly she forced them back to the TV to try and watch the mundane feel good Christmas special of whatever sitcom was replaying to distract herself instead. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Sinterklaas had come and gone in a hurried celebration involving only one night at his family's home in the Netherlands. Rob had been reluctant to go in the first place, but at Heleen's pleading had acquiesced. He'd been so unbelievably busy with the uptick in Awarewolf, especially with go-to-market orders. It was like he and Sienna couldn't brew things fast enough. For the first time ever, Rob's mother said she was proud of him. That had shocked Rob into silence, and Jitske had then promptly dived in to her own accomplishments.
As the holiday had come to an abrupt close when Jitske departed, Rob's parents had asked him to return for Christmas dinner. Rob had agreed, but only on the condition that he would be able to bring Lyra. His father had agreed at once, and after a moment of hesitation, so did his mother. Heleen was delighted for a third girl to join the brood, and Jitske... well, what she didn't know wouldn't hurt her. Rob half hoped that Jitstke wouldn't even bother to turn up.
Christmas Eve dawned cold and bright, and Rob and Lyra had plans for a lazy brunch before continuing to his parent's place. They would be staying at a little inn down the road, as Rob didn't want to entirely overwhelm Lyra. He already worried about panic attacks from his mate, who had no real close relations with her own family. Ties had been cut when Lyra had been transformed. Only Hanna remained, and Rob had no idea what her agenda was for the day.
Rob unfortunately was called away to the apothecary by a frantic Sienna - somehow the last shipment of goods was missing a kilogram of fluxweed and she had to figure out an alternative fast. They had always worked well together, their minds syncing to create and innovate. Sorting out the issue took longer than Rob had anticipated, but in the early afternoon he called a hasty goodbye to his partner before apparating back to his home.
"Sorry about that, Le. Took longer than I expected - who knew fluxweed was such a crucial ingredient," said Rob sourly as he shed his cloak. He sauntered over to the sink and poured himself a glass of water. "Are you ready to go?" asked Rob after having downed half the glass. "It will be fun. I think. Hopefully Jitske decided that we're not worth her time and doesn't turn up," said Rob, more to convince himself than anything.

Of course she knew Rob had already been home for some sort of traditional Christmas earlier in the month, but she hadn't really had much to do with it. There had been a small press panel for the upcoming national duel circuit that was due to begin in January and she had gone to that instead. A night in a rather nice hotel in Glasgow had been marred by the fact she was alone and nervous about making a fool of herself. It had gone down without a hitch thankfully and she had Rob join her the next night, but she had ached with out him. Hearing him speak about his family gave her mixed feelings. Of course there was moments of peace paired with moments of annoyance over Jitske, but overall Rob actually got on with his family. Part of her was jealous over it, part of her was uneasy. Listening about them all, she took mental notes, she would be soon thrown into it all and have to remember the points about everyone's various personalities. When the moment had come she really still wasn't ready for it. Even with all her own mental preparation. She hadn't exactly been cast out of her own family after her transformation, but nor was she welcomed with open arms anymore. Rob's parents were sure to know about her affliction as well as hers. She had lain awake the last few nights, wondering how much exactly he had told them. If he had told them how they had met, and how they were bonded mates. She knew Heleen had known, maybe she had told them. That was the point she had been stuck on when she heard the quiet pop in the centre of their living area. Abruptly the thought had been stuffed away for later contemplation and her eyes darted up to Rob. As she watched him shrug out of his cloak, she stopped herself from jumping up and throwing herself at him for some form of comfort to calm her nerves. Subconsciously it was probably some sort of practice for dulling her fairly often physical shows of affection towards Rob, unsure of his parents would approve of not. She was glad they wouldn't be staying in the family home, there was some peace in that of course, but still. While she was in the home she would be on high alert to the fact she would likely be being judged the whole time, whether his family meant to or not. She supposed she should try and control herself somewhat from now on. Slowly standing to meet him, she gave him a slow, uneasy nod. "I think so.." with a small glance to her bag and coat sitting at the front door of the flat, she swallow a lump rising in her throat and gave him another nod, trying to reign some confidence when it was so obviously lacking. Rob returned from the apothecary, feeling rather disheveled. He'd been planning on a lie in and a lazy brunch with his mate, before setting off back to the Netherlands for Christmas Eve. Rob was relieved that his mum had agreed to host Lyra, though they were staying at a little inn down the road because Rob wasn't certain Lyra would be able to handle how full on his family could be. Especially Jitske, if she decided to turn up. As sweet as Heleen was, Jitske could be rotten to the core.
Lyra's huge eyes met Rob's, and he couldn't help but smile. Seeing her sat on his couch, her limbs folded up neatly beneath her. The road back here had been long and winding, but Rob knew that they could face it all. As long as Lyra was by his side, he could face anything. Their time apart had been arduous, and not even work could distract him from the gaping hole in his chest. Bit by bit, Lyra and Rob melded their souls and filled the hole, coming together to form something stronger and more beautiful than before. Rob swiftly made his way over to Lyra, bending down and kissing her soundly on the lips. He knelt before her, his hazel eyes meeting her dark ones.
"I'll be with you every step of the way," murmured Rob, taking her hands. She swallowed thickly, giving him a nod. He grinned, then rose, collecting their bags. "Let me just arrange a portkey really quickly," said Rob, picking up an old tin that teetered precariously on top of the rest of the recycling. "Portus," he muttered. He'd cleared the use of the portkey through his sister a few days ago, though Heleen had left long before him. Rob darted to collect their bags, then took Lyra's hand before the portkey glowed blue, and a tug behind his navel told him the portkey worked.
The pair were dumped haphazardly in a well manicured garden, a stone path leading up to a handsome house. Rob glanced at Lyra, tightening his grip. They could have stayed here, with the many spare rooms, but they needed an escape. Just in case. "Hey. I love you," Rob whispered to his mate, kissing her on the cheek. He squeezed he hand, and led her up the path to the ebony front doors. "Mama! Papa! It's Rob! I have someone I'd like you to meet!" Rob called to the grand staircase before them.
A door to the right flung open and a woman poked her head out. She had the same inquisitive eyes as her son, and the same wild hair as her youngest daughter. "Lyra!" said Rob's mother, her voice warmer than her cool gaze. She analysed the pair of them. "You make my son glow."

Although overjoyed to see her mate and finally have him back with her, Rob being home meant other things; like how now they would finally have to bite the bullet and get going to Rob's parents house. It was only midday yes, but, the day was already dreary and overcast Lyra was sure it was to be dark quickly enough tonight and she hated being out in the dark. As bad as her nerves were, she had wanted to be there and settled at least. It happened all at once. Lyra hadn't had any time to protest and tell Rob she hadn't actually eaten in his absence. It would have been sensible to of course, but then her nerves had gotten the best of her and the mere thought of food had made her stomach lurch uncomfortably. Instead she had sipped at tea here and there. She had been reaching for the cup, to clear it away, when Rob stopped and knelt in front of her to confront and comfort. Suddenly the thoughts of the dark dregs of tea were gone as Rob placed his lips gently against hers, and watched her so lovingly. The way their eyes met made her indeed feel a bit better, along with his words and the way he held her small hands in his. Nibbling her lip quietly, she wasn't quite sure what to say in response, so instead she simply nodded and took in his words. But then he stood, and things were moving again; including her stomach contents it would seem. When he reached for her bag, she started just slightly; his Christmas present was inside of course, but after a sensible second she relaxed again. It was buried at the bottom and it wasn't like he was about to unpack everything right here when he seemed so intent on leaving. No, instead she gingerly took her battered rucksack and swung it onto her back. Strong and independent as always she wanted to do it herself. When Rob mentioned the Portkey she only grimaced slightly. She hated them. Ever since she was little they made her queasy, she didn't travel easily. Lyra thought they might be Floo-ing to the home, but maybe this was less personal she thought. Less intrusive. All the same, as the spinning subsided and they touched down on the front lawn, her eyes remained closed and she stayed tightly clung to Rob. As much to get her bearings as well as to mentally ready herself for the task in front of her. Slowly her eyes opened, but she didn't step away from Rob for a moment. Instead she let him keep hold of her. Subconsciously searching out comfort, her mate knew and was able to return what was needed. With his declaration of love, a small smile lit up her face and was able to momentarily quell her anxieties. Nodding in reply she was able to mumble out "I love you too Robbie" Taking in the house her eyes drifted away from him and up to it's imposing shape. It seemed plenty big enough and there was surely rooms for her and Rob to stay, but Lyra had been glad he had opted to book a room in a place close by. She hadn't questioned it, but instead welcomed it and the fact they could have some time together without the impositions of the outside world, or the stresses of it. The nausea from travel had subsided for the most part as they stepped over the threshold into Rob's childhood home. As he stepped forward to seek out his family, Lyra hung back, shying away just slightly. As she stood a few steps behind him and he called for his parents, she looked down and quickly appraised the outfit she had chosen again. Suddenly the jeans and knitted sweater felt too plain for the grandeur of the house. However as Rob's mother appear, she didn't have much time to think it over too much. Her eyes widened at the quickness in which he seemed to conjure her up, and although she was smiling sheepishly, the unsettled feeling in her stomach was rearing it's ugly head again. Especially when what Jocelyn had to say hit her ears and made them burn. The flush continued through her cheeks as she worked out an adequate response. Pausing to take a breath and brush back some of the wild curls she had tried to tame into a half up style, she took in his Mother and smiled again. "Uh, thank you" she stumbled over her words but got there eventually. Her tone was quiet, but sincere. "He makes me very happy." It was simple but it was all she could manage for the moment as she stood in the entry way, hands hanging aimlessly by her side. As her cheeks flushed again, she realized she had forgotten any manners, and felt even more inadequate "Your home is lovely, by the way. Thank you for inviting us."

The house was largely unchanged from Rob's childhood. The brick and wood facade, the wooden columns, the veranda that wrapped around the house with various plants and shrubs poking out at random - it was all what he had grown up with. Rob had tried to spend a lot of time out of the house, especially after his bite. He'd loved running as a boy, and even when a werewolf had attacked him on a run, it hadn't waylaid him. The pair entered the front hall to a grand staircase, and Rob called for his mum and dad. As if summoned out of nowhere, Rob's mum appeared from a door at the right. Her hair was a wild and tangled mess. They had likely roused her from some harrowing activity - at Sinter Klaas it had been reformer pilates. Rob still refused to ask questions.
Jocelyn narrowed her eyes at Lyra. She was small for a Dutch woman, only standing at five foot six. But she towered over Lyra as surely as Rob did. She crowed his mate's name, exclaiming that she made Rob glow. "Mama," Rob grumbled, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. It was a fact more than an observation, but still. "Lyra, you can call me... Jocelyn. Your father is in the library," said Jocelyn to Rob, her eyes flicking between the pair. "She looks like a tarsier. Eyes too big for her face. When I was working for Water Aid in Malaysia, I saw many. Just like her," said Jocelyn to Rob in rapid Dutch. Rob rolled his eyes. "Lovely, thank you mama, I'll find us some drinks then," said Rob in English, steering Lyra dutifully away from his mum before she could stick her foot in her mouth even more.
Rob led Lyra to the kitchen, dropping their bags by the marble topped island. "Fancy something to drink? Perrier? Beer? Whisky?" he asked, rummaging through a drinks cooler for a beer for himself. "She's rather a handful. I've never actually gotten a nice word out of her, not unless it's a backhanded compliment. There's always something to improve with her," said Rob, glancing up at Lyra. "My dad is a bit easier to handle. He mostly grunts. Mum takes up all the air for talking," he added with a grin.

With a small nod of understanding she watched Jocelyn. It seemed by the follow up that she would rather her not be here at all, never mind to call her Jocelyn, the hesitation in her voice was obvious. And Lyra didn't speak Dutch, but looking up and witnessing the exchange between Rob and his Mother didn't exactly give her good vibes. Biting down on her lip she stayed silent as her eyes moved slowly back and forth between Rob and Jocelyn, the tone was enough to work out that what was being said probably wasn't very nice. The way she kept looking at Lyra also didn't make her feel any better. Forcing a small smile, she simply allowed herself to be led away. It wasn't like she had anything to say in response anyway she supposed. When they were in the kitchen, she didn't relax any further. Taking a breath, she listened to Rob for a moment before answering. So this was how it was going to be. She had always been sure it was unlikely his family would like her, but the way Rob had reacted said enough about just what little his mother must have thought of her. While she always had some inkling and prepared to harden herself against the fact, she wasn't sure why it had stung so much. She supposed in truth there was some small part of her that had actually wanted to impress them, to bowl them over and have them actually like her. But it wasn't to be obviously. Once she realized she hadn't actually answered Rob, she pulled herself away from her intrusive thoughts and forced a small smile. "Uhm, maybe just some water." She wanted to keep her wits about her if she was going to be judged over the next day or two. It was easier to not drink for now. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Rob was embarrassed by his mothers antics. He would have a word with her later about the value of the golden rule - after all, isn't that what being a humanitarian was about? Lyra was no less human than he. Rob marched Lyra from the room and asked if she wanted a drink. Lyra, naturally, looked immensely uncomfortable. If she could shrivel up into that massive jumper of hers, she would in a heartbeat. Rob's cheeks flushed scarlet, and he placed his freshly opened beer on the counter, enveloping her in his arms without a sound.
They stood there for a few moments, just clinging to one another. "I'm sorry," said Rob at last. "We've never really gotten along. She's more about the picture perfect family than what we really are. A bit rag tag," he added after a moment. He dropped his nose into Lyra's hair, silent again as he mulled over that most recent interaction. He was about to speak when they were interrupted by a rosy cheeked man with thinning hair and horn rimmed glasses. Rob made no move to let go of Lyra, but smiled at his father. "Papa, this is Lyra," said Rob, letting go of Lyra after one extra squeeze.
"Lyra, welcome! I am Johannes," said Rob's father, loud and boisterous as usual. Rob supposed you couldn't head up an international conglomerate without having some manner of charisma and likeability. "You are very welcome here," he added, glancing between the pair. Rob shrugged. "Mama said she had eyes too big for her face. I think they are perfect," Rob said, shooting his father a look. Johannes hummed, stroking a clean shaven chin. "Hm, yes, my wife can be... what is the word? Afstotelijk," said Johannes, his magnified eyes crinkling at the corners. Rob leaned over and murmured to Lyra "Off-putting," as a translation. "She does so much good she forgets to be kind! Not only third world children need love. Come, let me show you library, Lyra. Rob, haal een drinkje. Whisky." And with that, Lyra was steered away once more, this time by Rob's father.
Rob watched Lyra's retreating form, wincing. His mother drifted into the kitchen. "What does your wretched father think?" asked his mother in Dutch. Rob glared at her. "He seems to rather like her. And I'll have you remember your manners that you instilled in us so young, thanks," Rob shot back with a frown. He poured a measure of whisky for his father, not wanting to leave Lyra alone too long with his interrogation.

Still, she tried to steady herself. Moving towards the counter to try and physically steady herself she forced a small smile; she knew it would be clear to Rob even if she tried to hide it, just how much that interaction with her mother had rattled him. Still, she tried all the same. The weak smile lingered all the same as she reached for the glass of water he prepared for her all the same. It was easy to get lost in his arms though, and she did so happily. It warmed her again and allowed her to relax just slightly. She felt safe there and despite the shit feeling that had been left in her stomach from his mother it was warm and she felt better for it. That was until a door off the kitchen open and caused her to freeze up again; what if it was the mother again. Come to comment on another piece of her. Ugh. She wasn't quite sure she could take it again so soon. She sprang apart from Rob self-consciously and readied herself for the oncoming storm. Except it didn't come. It was a man who Lyra assumed to be Rob's father. Immediately warm and welcoming, he couldn't be more different from his wife, and for a silent moment she wondered how they had ended up together. He had the same ruffled look that Rob had sometimes, she liked that. Returning his smile, her cheeks flushed slightly "Hello" she breathed somewhat shyly. That was until Rob repeated what had gone on between her and his wife, with that she attempted a polite smile, but it came out as more pained than she had probably meant. At Rob's whisper in her ear, she nodded. Off putting was one way to put it. At least Lyra wasn't alone in the fact she'd noticed. Maybe her husband was frequently on the receiving end of her tarte comments. She wasn't sure she particularly wanted to be whisked off with her father in law so soon after meeting him, less she be accosted by another family member, but then she didn't want to say no either. She thought Rob might come after them, but he didn't seem to move. No instead Lyra was brought through the house by Johannes, been giving facts and figures and making polite small talk here and there about Lyra's origins. It made her think again how much Rob had told him about her background. Did he know that she had very little contact with her family? Maybe that's why he was being so nice to her, well that and to offset how rude his wife had been. For now she followed along and hoped she could stay with Rob's father for the foreseeable future. Lyra and Rob's father sauntered from the room, with Johannes steering her. He was chatting more freely than Rob was used to, perhaps to make up for the cold fronted by his mother. Rob glared at the woman, spat a cutting remark, then turned on his heel. "I think it would be best if you stayed with your crafts for a bit," said Rob over his shoulder, the threat clear in his voice. She narrowed her eyes but said nothing, finally relenting and returning to her day room where the lighting was best. Jocelyn had always enjoyed painting.
With the weight of his mother's distaste lifted off his shoulders, Rob was free to join Lyra and his father in the library. It had been his favourite room in the house for as long as he could remember. The dark, lacquered wood, the well worn leather sofas, the soft lighting of candles that had seen many near sleepless nights. And the books. Merlin, the books. His parents had accumulated quite the collection in their many years, with a substantial amount passed down from both magical families. The walls were lined with bookshelves, each containing tomes filled with magic and mystery. Rob remembered sneaking into the library to read Arsenius Jigger's full collection.
"So many memories here," said Rob with a soft grin, wrapping an arm around Lyra's middle. He led her to the sofa by the handsome stone fireplace. Rob's father pointed his wand at the fireplace and it sprung to life, flames crackling merrily. "Remember that Christmas when Halo and I nearly took down the tree?" asked Rob with a snort. Jocelyn had brought her Christmas traditions from Scotland and her time at Hogwarts. "I swear you were convinced I wasn't magical with all the pine needles we kept finding on me. Couldn't get properly clean in months," said Rob with a sigh, glancing at Lyra. He squeezed her in a reassuring manner. "No attacking the tree for me this year. Promise," said Rob.

Lyra had been enjoying Johannes company. Conversation flowed easily as they spoke about little things. She knew he was probing slightly about her background, and she told him some of the smaller things. The things she was comfortable telling him were the more insignificant things; like where her family were from in Hungary, that she had gone to Hogwarts, those sorts of things. Things she was sure Rob had probably already told him. She kept the heavier things to herself for now, hoping Rob hadn't told his father those things. With smalls smiles, and nods of agreement, she watched him; easily able to see which traits of his Rob had inherited and the parts of him she loved the most. Still, she was happy when Rob made a reappearance, she felt the pressure lift from her somewhat. The library was some comfort to her, though she had never been a great reader, she enjoyed the cosy ambience and the fact it allowed her to relax a little more. Especially after Rob wrapped himself around her and set the fire alight. That made her smile. She couldn't join in on his memories of Christmas' past, but she smiled softly as she watched the fire, thinking on some of her own family traditions. She didn't have much to say or to add to his musings, but she smiled anyway. Now his mother was out of the picture she felt a little more at home, like Rob wanted her to. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad Christmas after all. Her first with Rob after the long year they'd had together. In her mind, this made all the fighting worth it. Snaking her hand down, she reached for his hand and squeezed at it, like it was their little secret away from Johannes. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Rob squeezed Lyra's hand reassuringly, though then decided it wasn't quite enough and looped an arm around her back. Though she couldn't comment on Rob's memories or anything that had occurred in this very room, Lyra looked much more comfortable and relaxed than she had ten minutes ago. Lyra touched his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze in return. Rob glanced down at her, and felt at peace.
Not missing anything, Johannes got up from his seat. "I'm going to check on your mother. Take down any the books you like," he said before shuffling from the room. Rob and Lyra sat in silence for a moment. Rob leaned over and buried his nose in Lyra's silken hair, closing his eyes. "I love you," he reminded her, as if she needed to hear it. "Thank you for coming home with me," he added, his voice barely above a whisper. Rob unwound his arm from around Lyra, his fingers trailing along her arm as he stood. Rob tucked his hands in the pockets of his trousers, looking up at the towering shelves of books that surrounded them.
"There may be only so much you can learn from a book... but there are so many options," said Rob, glancing over his shoulder at Lyra. "Like look at this one - Basic Hexes for the Busy and Vexed. And here - Healing at Home with Herbs. Wonder what sort of herbs, the Amsterdam kind or the magic kind," said Rob with a grin. "Ly... I can't tell you how happy I am to see you here..."

Remaining quiet as Johannes began to move and speak to her, she simply nodded and smiled softly. Eventually she mumbled a thanks as her cheeks flushed for some unknown reason. She stayed quiet, pushing her cheeks together and hoping Johannes didn't notice and if he did, that he wouldn't judge like Rob's mother. She inhaled once the door closed behind him, and once feeling Rob's face press into her hair, she was able to relax. How he had known the words were needed, she wasn't quite sure, but she was grateful for them all the same. Closing her eyes, she melted into a more settled stance, leaning back into him just a little and letting her soft smile become more genuine. "I love you too Robbie" Once she felt him move, she forced herself to stand up straight and support her own weight again, instead moving to lean on the worn arm of the leather couches in the room. She stood back and watched him move around. She was never academic, no that had been @leo , but she could appreciate books and their many subjects. With a small grin she eventually admitted " I used to try to read a lot when I was in Mungos..." her tone growing softer, she forced a laugh to try and lighten the mood "...when I was recovering from my bite. Leo used to tell me I should use the time wisely. So I tried to read up on duelling theory, and do some useful things. But I could never really concentrate. My head was all over the place...obviously....I mostly just slept a lot instead. Which annoyed my mother, but anyway...." Her smile now a little drier, she looked up at Rob again, she knew he'd have the same experience, or hopefully something like it anyway. If anyone would understand, it would be her mate. As he spoke of the different herbs from Amsterdam, she laughed quietly, knowing exactly what he meant. His next statement was out of the blue, but it wasn't unwelcome. Giving him another small smile, she bit on her lip softly before she was sure what to answer. "I'm glad I was able to come. For you I mean. Even if your Mum doesn't like me.." her laugh of acknowledgment to the fact was terse, but Rob could hardly argue with it. "I mean, I don't blame her. I'm not exactly dream daughter in law material, even if I am your mate" With a moment's pause, she let her head tilt to the side before her eyebrow quirked up. "Did you tell them that actually? Or just that I'm a girlfriend?" There was a tone to her voice that made her questioning genuine. A curious one, in no way accusatory. She wouldn't have blamed him if he had just said she was a serious enough girlfriend. She remembered herself telling Hanna about him, trying to explain the concept of him being more than just a boyfriend and actually her bonded mate had been....interesting, but she had been accepting of it pretty much right away. There wasn't much that hanna horváth would accept from Lyra, but she couldn't imagine trying to tell people she was less close to, telling her family. The idea of it settled a knot in her stomach wow such foreshadowing. Johannes maybe would welcome it, but she was sure Jocelyn would laugh at the idea. Watching him closely in the firelight, she waited for Rob's answer. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Johannes left the pair to themselves, for which Rob was immensely grateful. He was on edge, and necked the bottle of beer he'd brought from the kitchen. Still, his nerves weren't soothed. He nestled his nose in the dark tangles of Lyra's hair, and instantly felt more at ease. Things hadn't started off completely right, but Rob was determined to make the best of it. His father was an easy win, and not even Rob was liked by his mother. He'd consider the day victorious so far, but Rob had a niggling feeling that Lyra didn't feel quite the same. He reminded her how thankful he was that she had come with him, that he could share a bit of his history with her.
Lyra had so rarely spoken about her past, had so rarely spoken about her brother and mother and father. Their entire relationship had been built on the present, on the irresistible bond between them. Rob had vowed to research it further, but hadn't yet had the chance. He'd gotten busy with the subsequent public release of Aware Wolf. Rob glanced over his shoulder at his mate and grinned. "Sleep all you want, princess. I'll read to you," he said, his lips curving upwards in a gentle smile. Rob had only ever felt close to his mother when she used to read to him. He'd always had such an appetite for stories, always begging for one more chapter. Those long nights had been the extent of their relationship it seemed, for when the morning came she was critical of his every choice once more. For the moment, Rob decided not to share that with Lyra. It would do no good.
"When I was bitten..." Rob began, his voice cracking. "I didn't speak for days. I thought I was doomed. My mum even wanted to withdraw me from school, to take everything away from me, to shut me away like the monster I was. But I knew that staying here would only make things worse. The headmistress at Beauxbatons allowed me to return, so long as I transformed safely away from the other students. Halo helped with the convincing, and finally pa's promise that I would be okay brokered the agreement." Rob looked down at his hands, hovering over the dusty titles. He took a shuddering breath, remembering those dark times when he wanted nothing more than to die - that his life had been stolen from him and for what?
But Rob knew better now. Lycanthropy had been an ordeal, and still to this day he struggled. But with Aware Wolf and Lyra... he realised it was easier to live with. "And then came you," he added after a moment, grinning at her. "My mum doesn't like anyone - I think it's more that she didn't select and groom you herself that disappoints her," said Rob, brushing a lock of hair from Lyra's porcelain face. Her next comment gave Rob pause, and he frowned. She already looked so defeated, and Rob knew that he would hurt her more. Instead of answering, he took a step closer to her and kissed her, his lips brushing softly against hers.
"I haven't. I didn't know what to say," Rob admitted at last, drawing only a hairs breadth away from his mate. "But I want to. I want to find the right words. To describe exactly what you mean to me."

Lyra shifted quietly to let herself sink into the plush arm chair by the fire as Rob began to look through the books. Eased by his touch and nuzzle at his hair, it was enough now to just be in the same room as him. She was beginning to relax, despite the lurch in her stomach. Brushing her sleeve up she glanced at her left forearm, the glaringly obvious reminded of the moon cycle. The tattoo she had gotten a few years ago; a moon and some cherry blossoms. It was an enchanted one she had gotten off a traveller in Berlin, it shifted to mirror the real image of the moon. In hindsight the stark reminder was more of a torment in the early days, but now she mostly disregarded it, like the other lines and scars at her neck. Glancing up to him, she gave him a small smile as he uttered more reassuring words. Yes he could read to her, read her to sleep in a nice comfy bed. Maybe not tonight, but another time. In a comfortable silence, she nodded in understanding. It wasn't unlike her own initial reaction. So stunned into silence. She had sat so solemnly in the early hours; when she wasn't crying or asleep. There had been quite a lot of that as well. She gave a half laugh eventually, with a crooked grin, trying to lighten it. " My parents were the opposite. Well my mother, Papa was..." looking down she grew a lot more quiet. It always hurt more to talk about him, she'd been incredibly close to him all her life and then one day he just stopped acknowledging her altogether. "Distant. He was more distant. My Mum wanted to pretend like nothing had changed. I begged not to go back to school. I didn't want people to look at me, to know. I mean they had to know, or have some suspicion anyway. But they made me go back for the year because it was My OWLs, I don't know if you have them in Beauxbatons actually but anyway they're important enough I guess..." she had started rambling almost nervously as she looked into the fire now, letting her whole story tumble out before she could stop herself. "So it was agreed somehow I'd go back for that. Hogwarts were accommodating I guess. I transformed in a locked cell in the Hospital Wing. It was tiny, smaller than this room, but it was safe." Taking a breath, she frowned slightly. "It was drilled into me how dangerous I could be, and I didn't want to hurt anyone. I just hated being at school. I tanked in every subject. I got one grade that wasn't a fail and that was in Defence against the dark arts because I had defensive spells from Duelling. But yeah, then my mother decided they'd try me in Durmstrang, they thought I might be better with Hanna, but no that was even worse, so then yeah, I turned seventeen in the November and just didn't go back.." with a small shrug she tried to force a smile, still making light of it. "I'm glad you enjoyed it though. Being a smarty pants really is your thing Robbie" A quiet chuckle escaped her lips before she sat quietly again and briefly looked at the fire with a shudder, then back to him. 'And then came you'Her smile grew more genuinely now as she watched him. "Yeah. Then I found you. Things are better now. I can look forward to transformations" She kept her words simple, her knew the weight of them anyway. She didn't need to dress it up. Her face tilted back to look up and meet his in a gentle kiss. With his admission she nodded simply, looking thoughtful for a moment. " Yeah I thought it might be. I was just wondering." She giggled quietly and reached her hand up to pull him down beside him on the arm chair, she was squashed now, but loving every minute of it. "I was just worried that Heleen would tell them or something, because she knows, but she would make it sound....weird." She eventually finished lamely. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK
