15 January 2027
Thirty six days, eighteen hours, and three minutes. Luna had been regretting what she said for thirty six days, eighteen hours, and three minutes. Four minutes, now, she thought as she glanced at her watch. The first week back at training was coming to a slow close, and Luna was glad for it. The past week had been tortuous in how utterly the same it was. Even though Simon had admitted having feelings for her, even though Luna had abruptly shut him down and fled the scene, even though everything had changed, they were acting as if nothing at all had. That the world hadn't shifted and that Luna's black heart hadn't cracked.
Mostly, the pair avoided one another, especially opportunities that would catch themselves alone. But during practice, they spoke amicably enough, even if it was edged a bit with ice. Their teammates had obviously noticed, but not said anything about the new normal between them. What mattered was that they were in fighting shape for their first official match of 2027, to take place in two weeks time. As long as Luna and Simon played well in the match, things would be fine for the team. Even if things most certainly were not fine for Luna.
The coach blew the whistle and Luna was the first one out of the air, slinging her broomstick over her shoulder as she marched towards the locker room. She showered and changed quickly, ignoring the idle chatter of her teammates in favour of slipping out unnoticed. "Loons, we're going to the pub. You gotta come!" called her fellow beater. Luna grimaced, but knew she couldn't come up with a reasonable excuse. She hesitated for a moment, her grey eyes lingering for a second too long on Simon, who was dutifully ignoring her stare. "Right," said Luna, giving in.
When she was showered and changed, Luna quickly departed the changing room, and leaned against the wall of the clubhouse. She listened while her teammates chattered, talking about weekend plans and how their holidays had gone. It had been all anyone could talk about lately. "Loons, I left my wallet in the changing room, would you be a doll and get it?" asked Chaz, rousing Luna from her half zoned out state. "Get it yourself, you tit," she replied sharply, but he'd just lit a cigarette and shrugged. With a growl, Luna stomped back into the changing room - to find Simon midway through changing. The sight of his still damp hair, his pale skin, the taught muscles that he hid so well under his uniform... they all gave her pause. For the first time in thirty six days, eighteen hours, and twenty minutes, Luna met Simon's gaze. "Simon," she breathed, all the emotion that had been building up within her crashing down on her at once.

The New Year had been…awkward. A day didn’t go by, especially during practice, where Simon hadn't wished he kept his mouth shut. Simon was embarrassed for the stupid drunken confession from the heart he gave to Luna at the Quidditch Christmas gala. It had obviously upset her because they hadn’t talked about it since. During practice they were civil but they were avoiding each other at every other moment where they weren’t on the field. Simon felt like an idiot for doing the one thing he promised he wouldn't do: fall for another girl. And Boy, was he falling.
Since the rest of the Bats were going to the pub, he decided to take his time in the locker room. The last time he drank at a quidditch function, he got too obliterated, so he was trying to take it easy. Simon was kicking himself for ruining his friendship and commaderie with Luna. Everything went to shit so fast.
Simon froze, eyes widening as Luna stopped in the doorway of the locker room. They both stared at each other frozen for only Merlin knows how long. He wasn’t prepared to see her. Swallowing hard, he feigned calmness as he stared back with his half naked form, joggers hanging loosely at his hips. Running a hand though his damp hair, his eyes matched her gaze cautiously, ”Luna...” he echoed after her, possibly a bit awkward, but he was stunned to be alone in her presence again. Simon wasn't sure what to say. His icy blue saucers fell on her curiously as to why she was in the Mens locker room, "Er-What's up?" he asked lamely, tossing a white towel in the laundry bin.

In a heavy moment of realisation, Luna knew Chaz had set her up. She pressed open the door of the locker room and stood face to face with a half naked Simon. His body was as familiar to her as her own, and she longed so desperately to close the distance between them, to feel the planes of his surprisingly soft skin against the tips of her fingers. She swallowed thickly, ignoring the prickling sensation behind her eyes. It took Luna a moment to find something to say, and when she finally could speak, she could only blurt out his name.
Simon's casual manner cut through Luna like a knife, and she felt herself deflate slightly. "I didn't realise anyone was still in here," said Luna. Though she wish she hadn't been so lost in her thoughts when Chaz had demanded her to retreat and find his wallet. A wallet, Luna was certain, that was already in Chaz's possession. "Er," she said, trying to start again. She should turn away, let Simon finish changing in peace. She should turn away and resume the shaky friendship they'd built, the casual hesitation and careful distance they'd instilled. But Luna could turn away from Simon as much as she could quit playing Quidditch. Which was absolutely not at all.
"Simon..." she whispered, instead taking a tentative step towards him rather than away. Luna wanted to reach out, to take his hand and let him feel just how hard her heart was hammering in her chest. How she wished she could wipe away the past thirty six days and tell him that she thought he was the most incredible, special person she had ever met. How even now, even after all these weeks, her palms grew clammy, her stomach turned, and her cheeks heated at the mere thought of him. They'd grown so comfortable together - wasn't it only natural that their friendship had morphed into more? But Luna had denied it at every turn, letting her pride direct her rather than her heart.
"Simon, I'm so sorry," said Luna at last, wiping away a hot tear that streaked down her face. Her lip trembled traitorously. "I'm so sorry..."

Simon pulled a Bats hoodie over his head, tearing his eyes away from Luna because he couldn't take the tension between them. Biting down on his lip, he carefully watched Luna as she searched for words. It seemed she was struggling as much as he had, if not, more. Some part, deep, deep down, inside of him took comfort in that.
"No, Luna." he said quickly, his icy gaze matching hers, trying to show her it was okay. Simon didn't want her to feel badly, he wanted the complete opposite for the Trelawney; he wanted her world to mostly be filled with happiness and wonder. "Don't be sorry. It's my fault." Simon insisted, not trying to make a big deal about it. Honestly, though, it was eating at his core from the inside out. Simon knew he messed up, they shouldn't have been messing around anyways, not when they should have been focusing more on playing longer and harder quidditch for their first game of 2027.
Tears fell down Luna's face, causing Simon's heart to fall to his stomach. Simon took a couple of steps toward her to close the distance between them. He carefully pulled her into his arms to offer her comfort her, rubbing his hand soothingly on her back to show her everything was okay. Simon sighed, a sadness nipping at his gut as he thought about everything they'd gone through over the past year. "I-I shouldn't have said anything. I'm sorry, Luna. I fucked up." Simon said softly, knowing that things between them wouldn't ever be the same.

There was a beat of silence, and then another. And suddenly, Luna couldn't fight back the prickling anymore. The first tear felt like a betrayal, but those that followed opened her heart further and further. Simon immediately opened his arms, engulfing Luna in a tight embrace. She let herself cry freely, perhaps for one of the first times in her life. She let herself be weak, curling into Simon's jumper, shaking her head slightly as he tried to explain how he shouldn't have said anything.
"That's not it!" wailed Luna, scrunching her face together as she tried to compose herself to speak. The pressure of Simon's arms around her, the soothing strokes of his hand on her back, all this did wonders to calm her. "You were right to say something," she managed after a long time, wiping her eyes once more. "Merlin, I feel like such an idiot. I was an idiot, Simon," said Luna, her gaze pleading.
Luna knew she had to face the truth. She'd been avoiding it for too long. Reasoning things away - yet she had never been the super clever Trelawney sister. It only made sense than now she was faced with it, she couldn't lie to herself anymore. Luna couldn't flee like last time, it would only make things worse. So Luna would stand and fight for what she wanted. "Simon I.. love you..." said Luna finally, her voice small but strong.

The tears that were prickling Luna's cheeks had grown to full streams of tears. Simon wasn't sure if she was crying from the situation because she was upset with him, but he knew something deeper was going on. His heart was telling him so. Over the past 37 days, he had missed Luna in ways that made him feel pathetic. He never realized he could dissect a situation so obsessively.
Hearing those three words changed everything. Suddenly the chaos in his world settled, there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Simon swallowed, a bit stunned by the confession, but also elated. Fuck, he hoped he wasn't dreaming again. The pads of his thumbs wiped away her warm tears on both cheeks, "I was the idiot, it's always been you, Luna." Simon confessed, knowing how he fucked up last year at Hogwarts by allowing other people and distractions to get in the way. Simon finally smiled, "I love you." he told her, not having to think about it this time. A wave of relief washed over him, he felt like a weight was lifted off of his shoulders and he could breathe again.
Simon held her close, cradling her hands gently as he spoke from the heart, "You make me feel whole. It fucking terrifies me because we both don't want to jeopardize anything with the team. But..the way you make feel, there's something special about this, I need to see what this is about." Simon couldn't help but smile. He hated how it felt to be so vulnerable, speaking from the depths of his heart, but with Luna he knew it would be okay. Fully aware of his rapid heartbeat, Simon reached for Luna's face and kissed her, hard. This kiss wasn’t soft, or tender. It was passionate. His hands gripped her sides, deepening the kiss to quench his thirst. Everything he wanted to tell her over the duration of those thirty seven torturous days were conveyed through the kiss they shared.

This couldn't be real, but Luna had never had a dream so pleasant. She had never imagined a circumstance that brought herself and Simon together. There was always something in the way, usually her own pride. That had very nearly been their downfall. Yet the words that dripped from Simon's lips echoed her own. He loved her. He loved her. Luna's breath caught in her throat as she pulled away to look up at him in shock. They'd both been fools, pushing one another away. The relief that washed over Simon in that moment was evident, and Luna let it settle on herself as well.
Simon took her hands, speaking softly yet passionately. "It is scary" Luna agreed breathily, still trying to wrap her head around how the whole situation had changed so quickly. From deteriorating to almost dust to becoming infinitely whole. "I need to know what my life with you... as yours... is like," she replied, her voice equally soft. Her smile matched his own, a thousand kilowatts and brighter than the sun. Her heart thundered in her chest and Luna swore she could feel the beating drum of Simon's own heart as he pulled her close, kissing her as he had never done before.
Luna felt very much as if she could fly, without the aid of her broomstick. That's how light her heart was at the realisation that she loved Simon and Simon loved her. It was such a strange thing to think of, but the time for picking it apart was not right now. After a long, heated moment, Luna broke from Simon, grinning coyly at him. "You know... I think this is cause for celebration," she suggested, twining her fingers in his. Luna led the way out of the locker room, and found that the entire team save one had left for the pub. Chaz stood there, looking smug as ever, his eyes directly finding their entwined hands. "You two are more obvious than a pair of bludgers. Go on, I'll tell the team we'll see you next week." With that, Chaz turned and jogged off towards the pub. Luna glanced at Simon, arching a brow, a silent invitation to take things somewhere more private. That way, they could be together and if they had time, discuss the ins and outs of their feelings.

As Lunas words sank in, he was overcome with happiness, his insides practically went to mush as his heart swelled in his chest. Something he never experienced before. Everything suddenly felt right in the world. As Luna took his hand, he laced his fingers with hers tightly, ready to face the world with er by his side. ”Well, we’ll never know if we don’t give it our best shot…I want you in my life and I want to be a part of yours.” he told her, the emotions completely overwhelming him as the words spilled from his lips. Simon breathed another sigh of relief, nodding fervently as she declared a need for celebration of their ‘achievement’. Luna made him feel like he could dance and sing at the top of the lungs. But truly all he wanted in that moment was to be graced by her presence, it was simple as that.
The look on Chaz’s face as they stepped out of the locker room was obvious that he was responsible for sending Luna into the locker room for his phantom wallet. A cigarette dangled from his lip with a smug smile as he told them he’d see them next week. Wow, he never expected Chaz to do anything thoughtful if it didn’t involve himself getting laid.
Simon turned to Luna as Chaz jogged off into the sunset, a smile spreading across his face. ”My place or yours?” he asked her with a flicker in his eye. All he wanted to do was make up for lost time. Now that they had started talking about feelings, the floodgates were open. Suddenly sharing his thoughts with Luna wasn’t scary.

How strange was it that just an hour ago, Luna was concerned with the cohesive nature of the team and how she would mix in with her doing her best to avoid Simon. She'd been petrified of his admission all those days ago, even more afraid of what it meant for the pair of them. What if they split up again? The past week had been awkward, but it would be nothing compared to genuine heartbreak. But Luna had no choice now - the words spilled from her mouth as quickly as the tears, gushing out like a river. And Simon? Well, he responded in kind.
The time had come for the unlikely duo to set off into the sunset, so to speak. Luna smirked at the thought as they watched Chaz trot off, obviously very pleased with himself. She looked over at Simon, her heart swelling ten times its normal size, her cheeks flushed with pleasure. She stood on her toes and leaned forward to kiss him soundly, murmuring against his lips "Yours." The location was familiar enough to Luna that she could even lead them there, despite the time they'd spent apart. Nearly thirty seven days. She barely broke away from him to twist on the spot, popping into existence on Simon's doorstep.
They were barely over the threshold when Luna set upon Simon again, not even giving him the chance to speak. She tugged at the jumper, breaking their kiss only to shed their clothing. Now was not the time to discuss logistics, only to feel whole the way only Simon could do.
Some time later - was it hours? Or perhaps several cloudy days? Luna and Simon lay sprawled, lazily draped across his sofa. She curled into his chest, letting out a contented hum if she did so. Something nagged the back of her mind - she ought to tell Evy about this revelation. Her best friend would absolutely murder her. But it was worth it. Luna tilted her chin so that she was looking into Simon's face, a soft smile spreading across her lips. "Hows the painting going these days?" she asked.

After a quick pinch behind the naval, the pair landed on the steps of Simon’s flat. There was barely enough time to open the door before they were undressing, lips and bodies colliding hungrily in a fervent fandango. Simon took his time as he thoroughly kissed and caressed every inch of Luna’s body, floating in the clouds as his lips reunited with her sweet flesh one again, at long last. Luna kissed him in a way that he wasn’t used to with her. There was an unbridled desire between them. No walls. No hiding. Just Love.
Some time later..
They laid splayed out, breathless. Simon's hand aimlessly trailed down her back as he gazed into her eyes with adoration. Never in a million years would he have thought he'd be in this position. And it felt so right. As long as they stayed in their bubble.
Simon was pulled away from gazing into Luna's eyes when she asked him how painting had been going. The question took him aback slightly. Mostly because he wished that he could have told her ‘good’, but he wasn’t going to lie to her. Simon felt like he hadn't painted anything worthwhile since before the demise of Hogwarts.
Running a hand through his hair, ”It’s been…eh.” Simon shrugged, ”Hate to admit it, but I've been a bit uninspired lately..” the young man answered honestly. “Maybe I’ll have more inspiration now..” he said hopefully, shooting her an optimistic smile. Luna would certainly be a great source of muse. A gentle hand ran down the side of her face before tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, ”Your haunting lil piece of work from last time is over there tucked away in the unfinished pile.” Simon chuckled lightly as he gestured to a couple of canvas' in the corner leaned haphazardly against the wall. Simon planted a tender kiss on her temple as he did so.
Once he located his joggers on the floor, he slipped them on easily, "Would you like any wine or tea? Or fancy a bite to eat?" he asked her, always trying to be hospitable. There were so many logistics of their relationship they needed to talk about.

Luna never thought anyone would look at her the way Simon did. With such deep affection and respect. She'd always been the hardest triplet to get along with, her inferiority complex overshadowing her ability to make friends. Luna had always held everyone at arms length, except for her sisters and Evy. Evy had been the first non-Trelawney that Luna was able to open up to, and had been the only one for years. Now, Simon could count himself among this number. And for it to be Simon Svendson, who had made his mark on the Hogwarts student population quickly as someone who stirred up trouble and would never be tied down? Well, that was another tiny miracle.
Luna knew from experience that Simon was secretly proud of his artistic ability. The Simon she had known a year ago would never have admitted to it - was it macho enough? But Luna asked how his painting had been recently, wondering if he had been able to pour the river of emotion they'd both been feeling into canvas. Simon admitted that he hadn't been very inspired lately, and Luna flushed scarlet. "Well, I hope to be an admirable muse for you," said Luna with a smile, kissing Simon on the cheek. His fingers trailed down the side of her cheek and Luna closed her eyes, leaning into his tender touch.
Her eyes flicked open at once at the mention of the painting she had started all those months ago. "Merlin, you didn't burn it? That's what I would have done," said Luna with a shiver. "Though burning it would perhaps invoke some further evil spirits crawling into my mind," she added after a moment of thought. Simon rose and Luna let out a noise of dismay, but watched as he slid into his joggers. With a frown, Luna sprang from the couch and claimed the Bats jumper, completely disregarding the fact that she had an identical one at home. Luna shot Simon a look that said she would be keeping this, in no uncertain terms. "Wime would be lovely, thanks," said Luna.
Padding over to the unfinished pile, Luna picked gingerly at the canvases. She found the one she had started almost at once and cringed. It was rather horrifying. "I think the best we can do is try to make it beautiful. It will take a team effort," said Luna, glancing at Simon over her shoulder. "A different team from the one we're used to," she added, hinting at the monumental task of discussing their new relationship that loomed before them.

Simon laughed at the surprise on Luna's face when he admitted to keeping her canvas. Shaking his head with a shrug, ”No, I wouldn’t burn it. This is a part of the process. It will be something lovely someday…” he chuckled, as he looked over at it with a polite nod. His face faltered comically, ”-Or hey, a bit abstract.” Simon smiled at her with a hint of playful jest. Simon started for the kitchen when she agreed to wine. He was grateful to have a bit of alcohol after the emotional rollercoaster they endured that day...hell, that month.
”I have wine glasses now.” he announced proudly with a cheeky smile, raising the empty glasses in a grand display from the kitchen. Simon uncorked Luna’s favorite wine, allowing a generous amount to slosh into her glass before pouring himself his own. Alcohol would make it easier to talk about feelings, though he felt like it was getting easier to open up with Luna when they seemed to be on the same page. ”My Ma had the same reaction as you when I tried serving her wine in a mug when she came to visit a couple of weeks ago.” Simon shared as he passed the glass to Luna. He could still remember her face. She dragged him to an overpriced department store immediately after.
Her words rang in his ears. The unfinished painting with a haunting streak of red down the middle was a great symbolic representation of their relationship. A blank slate with a steak here and there, that would transform into something beautiful. Simon clicked her glass to his, agreeing to her statement. ”We’ll make a great team.” he told her confidently, truly believing it. After a beat of silence, Simon thought about the statement. ”How do you think we will need to handle the news with the Bats?” he asked her, trying to maintain the nonchalance in his tone, but he knew they were both thinking it. His icy saucers fell to meet her gaze, wishing he could read her mind. "I don't want to have to hide this." Simons hand found hers, lacing his fingers with hers.

"Part of the process is having terrifying visions of dismembered bodies and blood rituals?" asked Luna, her brows knitting together in concerned. "I'm not sure..." But her face broke into a devious grin, and she nudged Simon gently. "No repeats. We'll fix it together," she added after a moment. Luna agreed to wine, and the excitement Simon displayed at his new purchase was infection. Luna tilted her head back and laughed, longer than she really should have. Tears of mirth streamed down her face as she took the filled glass from him, examining it whilst shaking still with laughter.
"It's such a small thing to be proud of, but I love them," said Luna, taking a sip. "But that ghastly Swedish mug will hold a place dear in my heart. Next to broom polish and Netflix." Laughing, Luna took another sip, then lightly touched the edge of the painting she'd never completed. A harsh strip of red cut the piece in half, and she commented that their teamwork could possibly fix it. Her grey eyes met his, a cloudy sky meeting a clear day. Something softened in her gaze as she looked at Simon, but the old trepidation crept back up her spine.
Luna sighed deeply, crossing her arms. "Honestly? This is more important to me than my career on the Bats," said Luna, surprising even herself. "Never expected those words to come out my mouth," she added sheepishly, blowing a strand of blonde hair from her eyes. "But I think... I think we were the only ones in the dark, all this time," she admitted quietly. If it had been clear to Chaz, Luna couldn't believe they would have pulled the wool over the rest of the teams eyes. "I don't think we should hide this." Luna paused. This was her opening, her chance to address... whatever this was. She loved Simon, and he loved her, so why was her heart thundering in her chest?
"I want to be with you, no reservations. To be on your arm at press releases, to be questioned about my boyfriend at interviews, how love blossomed from teamwork," said Luna after a long silence. "I want you in my life because you make me feel unafraid to be myself."

”Maybe not the…blood, gore, and sacrifice part.” he chuckled with her, bobbing his head into a nod of agreement when she said they’d fix the canvas together. "Yes, we'll make it something lovely." That was the first time they spoke of the event since it happened. The thought of the bones splayed on the floor of the cave and chanting crept into his memory. Luckily, Luna’s elation over his wine glasses pulled him from thinking too long about it. His smile widened when he got a glimpse at her face from across the room, happy tears streaming from her eyes. Simons cheeks were officially starting to hurt because Luna was making him smile so much.
Simon laughed at her list of favorite things. She seemed to have her priorities straight. ”That ‘Ghastly Swedish Mug’ is my most prized possession.” he stated, tone oiled with sarcasm. Obviously. ”Since you like it so much, you can have it, if you'll be my girlfriend.” Simon said smoothly with an eyebrow waggle and cheeky smile to match.
Luna's words hit his heart like a freight train. No one had ever said such heart felt words to him. Simons heart swelled in his chest, beating rapidly as butterflies went into a frenzy in his stomach. She was right, they were the only ones in the dark, it was worth a shot. If they didn't, they'd only be stuck in the same cycle. The Bats would be an obstacle they worried about when/if it presented itself.
Simon sat his wine glass down on the table to cradle her hand in his. There was so much he wanted to tell her but his heart was going a million miles a minute. Who would've thought that talking about emotions and being vulnerable could be a natural high. No wonder why people called Love a drug. ”I want you. The good, the bad, the visions, everything. All of You. I want to be a part of your world. When you're around I feel weightless. I don't feel loss or sadness, and life is just, wonderful. You make me want to do better." he told her as his gaze matched hers, unable to stop the smile from growing wider. "I love you, Luna." Simon professed, truly meaning he loved everything that made her Luna. Overwhelmed with happiness, Simon pulled her into his arms. "Wow, we're really doing this."

Luna chuckled, running her fingers through Simon's tousled hair. It felt like the finest silk in her hands. She leaned forward to kiss him again, allowing herself to feel elated at the prospect of their new beginnings. And she even allowed a squeal of delight when Simon mentioned he'd gotten real wine glasses. "You're starting to be a real adult!" she exclaimed with a laugh. Luna arched a brow. "Your most prized possession is a mug? I think mine is my broomstick," said Luna with a smirk. "Priorities, priorities. Can't say me, as I'm not something to be bought and bartered," she added, grinning stupidly all the same.
"I'll be your girlfriend if you hide that ghastly Swedish mug at the back of the press," Luna replied, but they both had to know it was a done deal. They'd tried for so long to deny the affection that had been growing steadily between them, but they weren't fools any longer. Luna had never been in love before, and this feeling of being light and grounded at the same time, dizzy but focused, all of these juxtapositions were so unfamiliar. She almost asked if Simon had ever felt like this with Claudia, but didn't want to sour her own mood. Besides. Claudia was ancient history now.
Luna's next words came slowly, with only a bit of hesitancy. She didn't want to hide her love for Simon. She felt like she'd had to hide as a child, being a weirdo. Her sisters had taken it harder than her, but Luna had become unapologetically herself. It had shaped her into a force of nature, and sneaking around was no longer a priority for her. It didn't add to the excitement, not when she wanted to shout her adoration for Simon from the rooftops. Simon replied with an equally heartfelt proclamation and Luna felt tears prick at the back of her eyes. Had she ever felt so much emotion at once? She didn't think so.
"You make me want to be better, Simon," she said in a quiet voice, her grin matching his own. "I love you too." She let out a breath, and nodded. "Freaky, isn't it? Wonder what the future has in store for us. Actually... I don't want to know. For now," she paused, lifting her glass. "To a bright and happy time," said Luna. She drank deeply from the glass, then rose. "So... does one need weed to get creative?" asked Luna with a mischievous glint in her eye.
