PERSONALITY The oldest child in a famous family. It wasn’t as bad as one might think. Lea grew up relatively normal, or it all felt normal for her. Spending time with her grandmother in Diagon Alley was perfectly normal while her mother and father worked. It was there that she was taught to sew. She was taught to be patient, be careful, and methodical, and every detail mattered. Tailoring dress robes could go horribly wrong with something was off by a centimeter. When she wasn’t playing hide-and-go-seek with her sister in the long rows of robes in the shop or with the other kids in Diagon Alley, she helped her grandmother with small tasks, or she doodled in her notebook. While Lea had also received a toy broom when her sister did, she hardly grew to like the sport as much as Lyka did. And by that, she didn’t really like it at all. Lea’s likes focused more on what she had grown up around: clothing. Fashion was always an interest from an early age, and she began to draw what she saw in magazines and her own creations. And as long as she helped her family in the shop, her father would give her a few Sickles which she would save to buy sweets, ice cream at Fortescue's, or purchase the latest Witch Weekly. But she always had coins for the Special Edition Witch Weekly that featured the yearly Fashion Show held in Paris. Lea learned how to put in the work, and she curiously observed the business savvy her grandmother and father shared. It was easy for her to make friends, which came in handy when the girls would wander around Diagon Alley and see the familiar faces of the other shop owners and their families. And when they were meeting new faces in neighboring Horizont Alley. Her grandmother taught her that it was essential to be polite and the customer was always right, which was easy to learn, but on the downside, Lea doesn’t do well with confrontation and loud arguments. She doesn’t like to fight, and her anxiety typically heightens before she even has a chance to get angry. This was also the same reaction when one of her parents or grandmother would get on her case because the backroom where she’d help in the summer was disorganized or something just out of place. Madam Malkin had an immaculate shop. There wasn’t a spec of dust on any of the robes on display, and every needle and thread had its proper location. The spools lined the wall in the backroom in order of color as the tailoring orders were labeled and sorted by their due date. Lea picked up similar habits. Even in her closet, her clothes are hung, separated in sections by t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, pants, and everything else and by color. And she is very nitpicky about things like that. Even the saved editions of Witch Weekly she keeps on her bookshelf are in order of their publication date. Seeing things out of order gives her anxiety, and because of that, she refuses to look at her sister’s things or her room or her school trunk because the urge to organize them is overwhelming. And Merlin forbid Lea accidentally touched a Quidditch-related item. She’d never hear the end of it–not that she would engage in much of an argument. But when she arrived at Hogwarts, her sorting into Ravenclaw made sense. She enjoys reading, sketching designs, and learning about whatever her curiosity latched onto that day. And not much fazes her except for a good fight. She would rather be agreeable and helpful. It was how she was raised. But as long as nobody is fighting and her sister isn’t trading breathing for talking about Quidditch, she is your friendly fashionista who doesn’t hesitate to help her friends or make new ones. This friendliness earned her many friends, and her muggle-born friends call her “Princess Leia” after a character in the Muggle fandom of Star Wars, which she has become secretly obsessed with now (among other muggle-related topics). And who wouldn’t want to be called a Princess? ORIGIN & RELATIONS diagon alley, london, england Francine Malkin - grandmother, retired seamstress/owner of Madam Malkin’s Laurentius Malkin - father, owner of Madam Malkin’s Tala Cruz - mother, owner of Madam Malkin’s lyka cruz malkin - younger sister, b. 2011 HISTORY There aren’t many Witches or Wizards that haven’t heard or been to Madam Malkin’s Robes for all Occasions. Lea grew up watching family after family and face after face enter and be fitted for their first year at Hogwarts or perhaps a new dress robe for an upcoming wedding. Her father had been working in the shop to help his mother when he met Tala Cruz, a native of the Philippines who had moved to London after studying at Hogwarts. They got married and started a family. Lea was born first in the middle of July, but Lea never remembered ever being or feeling alone—her sister Lyka was born the year after. Rather than let the girls run around the shop too much, Francine put Lea to work early. Small tasks such as basic sewing or cutting fabric and things like that. When Lea got older, she learned to sew more advanced and fix things like buttons and whatnot. The majority of the work was done by her grandmother and parents. She’d always marveled at how Francine made the tailoring and sewing look so elegant and straightforward as she nonverbally waved her wand and hand. But the rest of the time, Lea and her sister Lyka would play with the other kids in Diagon Alley and Horizont Alley. She often stood and stared at the sign for Horizont Alley, wondering to herself at the age of nine if an adult had really screwed up that spelling that badly. But her mother would tell her to dismiss it when she would ask. The only annoying part of her childhood was her sister’s Quidditch obsession. She would talk nonstop about it, and Lea learned that if she focused hard enough on whatever she was drawing her reading, she could mostly tune it out. But, she would never let anyone else complain or be annoyed. It was her sister, only she was allowed to pick on her, after all. Every time Lea had saved enough coins, she’d run out and buy the latest Witch Weekly and read all the gossip and look at wonder at all the latest fashions from the Wizarding World’s most famous individuals. Every once in a while, she’d buy an edition of the Daily Prophet if the articles had pictures of similar content. This became her topic to hyperfocus on, especially the first time she saw pictures of the Witch Witch? Fashion show in Paris when she was eleven. Lea asked her father if she could go, but of course, he said ‘No’ and instead told her to focus on going to Hogwarts that year. Lea was sorted into Ravenclaw, which was not a surprise to her family. She’d always been intelligent, even if it wasn’t always focused in the right direction, but she could remember random facts, especially if she was interested, and she loved to draw as well. Later on, she would fill her mind with the stories her Muggle-born school friends would tell her of topics that were popular for Muggles. The lessons she had been taught as a young girl helped her in school, she found staying on top of her assignments easy—though Potions was dreadful for her and she vowed to take it as little as possible during her academic career, and it was almost as bad as her dislike of cats. A dorm mate had a family cat at home and brought ALL the cat hair back to school with her, which Lea desperately tried to charm her clothes and things. At the beginning of her second year, she held her sister’s hand (who was more focused on the Quidditch house teams than anything), and they boarded the train. With the closeness in their age, it had been strange not seeing Lyka for months during her first year, but now she would join her at Hogwarts. However, that year started off poorly as a dead student was found on the train. A dead first year. Lea introduced Lyka to her friends, and they stuck together in the compartment until arriving at the school. However, Lyka was sorted into Hufflepuff—which meant different common rooms and on exact opposite ends of the Castle. Ravenclaw was situated in Ravenclaw Tower while Hufflepuff was in the dungeons. Another student died months after, and she received constant letters from home. While that second student had been a Ravenclaw, Lea told her parents they were fine. She was a bit worried, especially since the rumor was that the Lestrange girl had something to do with it all. The same Lestrange girl that was a Ravenclaw. But Lea always operated better when avoiding conflict. She kept her head down, besides making sure her sister wasn’t accidentally knocking people over in the Quidditch stands when she got too excited watching a match. The end of the year brought things she’d only read about in books, but at twelve years old, the gravity of what was happening didn’t really hit her. It didn’t make sense at all if she was being honest. The following year brought the Tri-Wizard tournament, and while Lyka moped around mourned the lack of Quidditch that year, Lea almost jumped out of her chair at the site of the visiting students. Their school robes were so different from Hogwarts’ very fashionable ‘grey with a splash of color’ look. She would have much rather worn the low blue heels Beauxbatons wore, and she thought the way Durmstrang utilized red as their primary color was unique. It was an exciting year, and she was able to interact with a lot of people, and she had no issue asking the Beauxbaton’s students about Paris and the fashion show and those kinds of things. But then the end of the year arrived, and she prepared to go home when the news that the visiting students had all been attacked and many had died. The pages of the Daily Prophet, Witch Weekly, and even The Quibbler all mourned the event, and there was nothing but sadness in the pages. Lea saved her Sickels for when things felt a bit more normal, not that it would come before the new school year. Instead of articles about the students, it was about Harry Potter instead. But the new school year still brought some excitement. Now in her fourth year, they were expecting a mass transfer of students from Ilvermorny, and Lea was curious about the American school. It was then that one of the students bumped into her, quite literally, in the Ravenclaw Common Room—their robes were brand new. Lea could immediately tell by the way the color looked on the blue tie and the way the black robes still had that unworn look. Lea introduced herself, and the student then said ”Oh! Like Princess Leia!?” Lea was immediately confused and wondering if she’d just been insulted, but the student explained and then pulled a book out of their bag named ‘Splinter of the Mind’s Eye,” and they explained what Star Wars was and how it was famous in the No-Maj or Muggle world. She let the name stick as she read the book that the kid that lent her, and after that, she asked her new friend if they had access to the other novels. Between the transfers and her other muggle-born friends, Lea became quite fascinated with what could be called the pop-culture aspects of Muggle culture. There were so many stories about anything and everything, and she almost forgot about Star Wars completely when someone lent her a Spider-Man comic book, but Star Wars would still be her favorite. Her fourth year felt normal compared to the last few, but the next few years would bring Dragons almost destroying Hogsmeade village. Hag’s Fever managed to take down a few of her friends and her sister, and they missed the Quidditch final as a result. Though, in hindsight, it was lucky considering what happened. Now that she was nearing fifteen, the loss of life at that extent was still a hard concept to wrap her mind around, but it didn’t make it any less sad and tragic. Fortunately, her fifth year felt the most normal since her first year. Lea found her favorite subject in Charms, where she practiced—or tried to practice what she had watched her grandmother do for all those years. The old woman was retired now, but she still lent a hand at the shop from time to time—she never sat still. Her friends often asked Lea to mend small rips or tears in her friend’s robes or alter them because someone had a growth spurt from September to October. She didn’t mind. Sometimes she didn’t like being asked, but she put aside whatever she was doing and did it anyway rather than say 'no'. It was good Charms practice, and she used it as a chance to practice elementary non-verbal spells, hoping to match the ability of her grandmother and father one day. But, as the end of the year approached, Hogwarts was attacked once more and razed to the ground by fire. Lea had still been in the Common Room when it all started and only knew something was really happening as someone said they smelled smoke, and then a bunch of Gryffindors ran inside, following other housemates to get them to safety. Lea didn’t know where Lyka was, and despite wanting to run down the stairs, the other students pushed her to a secret passage that led into the village. Hours later, she finally found her, and Lyka told her about what had happened at dinner and how she’d been paralyzed. She can still smell the smoke, though her heart skips a beat when something is burning nearby. It affected her sister far more than herself, though. Now in her sixth year, they were transferred to Ilvermorny—Lea was awfully disappointed that Beauxbatons was somehow not on the table. The idea of being so close to Paris and a fashion capital had been a dream, but now she was just farther away. At least now she had a cell phone and access to the web where she could always look up more about the upcoming Fashion Week and read more about Star Wars. OOC
