A spider web and I'm caught in the middle It had been about a month since that text Luna sent her, and so far, there hadn’t been any bad news. Actually, no news, really. But maybe no news was good news? No reason for Evelyn to sneak out of Beauxbatons and hex a certain professional Quidditch player as soon as she arrived in Ireland. But, while Evy hadn’t gotten a chance to see everybody during the winter holiday break, they were now in February, when they had the week off. At least the move to France hadn’t been all that different in that respect. Evy was secretly grateful it was after Valentine’s day as she wasn’t sure how spending time near a brand new couple on or around that day would have been—she wasn’t fond of being the third wheel. Wasn’t it enough that Luna was out living her life and Evy stuck in France?
But, Evy had agreed to come and visit, and a thought occurred to her at the last moment to invite—no drag Nate along as the poor boy spent all his time working. Plus, it saved her having to drop by Scotland after possibly visiting home to see her sisters and her nephew. Evy had informed Luna of the change earlier in the week, and they’d agreed to meet for dinner. ”Remember no comments about Simon.” Naturally, Evy had told Nate about that. And even if Evelyn didn’t entirely agree with it—Luna was her best friend. And she wanted her to be happy—whatever happy looked like for her. But, knowing what she did and knowing Nate, she didn’t want some kind of argument to break out. She gave him a look before looking back ahead.
They approached the selected location, and Evy looked around the crowd for Luna. Truly she hadn’t visited enough to feel comfortable walking around much without getting lost, but she and Nate had arrived earlier in the day to explore a bit before dinner. A welcome break from the monotony of their everyday lives. Evy felt her final semester was dragging to a close even as she submitted applications for internships and prepared for her final exams. But Evy was glad to see her best friend, despite the tiny nervous pit in her stomach—she’d only just recently told Luna about things that had happened before she went to Beauxbatons the previous year, they were both entitled to their own secrets, right?

Luna slicked on bright red lipstick before donning a wool jacket to match. Belfast was absolutely dreadful in the winter - if it wasn't raining, it was grey and there was a damp chill to the air that she just couldn't shake. But it was worth it and more for the way her life was going. If Luna had had the gift of foresight, she would have never believed her visions. That she would find happiness with a former rival, that she would form a bond so unshakable. Luna had messaged her sisters about the revelation, even though it was rather reluctant. Luna had no doubt Phoebe would be overjoyed, but Luna hadn't heard from Selene in months. Surely, the latter triplet was still unforgiving. And Luna had even tried to apologise, albeit rather weakly.
Being in love suited Luna, she thought to herself as she checked her appearance before flouncing out the door. Simon would meet her and Evy at the restaurant for dinner, as he'd had some business to attend to in Dublin. Luna knew that Nate was meant to be in Belfast later on this week, and she half dreaded their ultimate meeting. Luna was keen to keep Simon as far away from Nate as possible, hence why she'd arranged this dinner between herself, Evy and Simon before Nate's arrival. Luna also knew that Nate and Evy had grown close, and though it stung, Luna knew it was because Luna had been so busy in her own life. It was rather funny, that two best friends had bedded two best friends. Even still, Luna was wary of Nate's approach to girls - to love them and leave them.
Finally, Luna spotted Evy loitering outside the restaurant. "Hi," greeted Luna, bestowing a glowing grin upon her best friend. "You look lovely. Shall we go on and get a bottle of wine, drink it before Simon shows up and make him pay for it?" asked Luna, arching a brow mischievously. "Merlin and Morgana, I've missed you," she muttered after a moment, gathering Evy in an embrace. She turned towards the door and led the way in. They were shortly after seated at their table and Luna was quick to order a bottle of bubbly. "To celebrate. You. And me."

feb 2027 IT WASN'T A GOOD IDEA. It wasn't even a bad idea. It was a fucking terrible idea. Nate had so little free time he spent it wisely, why on earth would he ever spend a free night stuck across a table from Simon-fucking-Svendsen. He swiped the lint from his second-hand duffel coat again, scanning for a hair out of place. His knit jumper just soft enough to look expensive, though it certainly wasn't. Godforbid he looked hard done by. He already spent every morning and night meticulously spelling his clothes free of the pizza parlour odour.
As he apparated into an alley by the restaurant with a crack, Nate thought of Evy's strict reminder of 'no comments about Simon'. It restlessly rattled around his head, catching in the back of his throat as he swiped flat palms down the front of his coat and emerged from the cold shadows as a fine drizzle threatened to break out over the heavy, Irish sky. 'Why here,' he wondered with a sniff towards the dreadful sky. It all felt terribly pedestrian to Nate. Noting his bare knuckles burnt red from the February chill as he pushed the glass door open and was assaulted by a gust of warm, fragrant air.
Inside, the low lights did nothing to chase the chill in Nate's bones. Though it was doubtful such a thing could be banished so easily. He did not want to see Simon, he didn't even want to think of the dreadful boy as he rubbed his hands together and cast a careful look around the room. He caught sight of the two girls huddled close at their table near the window. 'It's too small', he thought with a twist of annoyance. He risked knocking knees with the Trelawney girl's piece, and if he touched Simon he'd have to make a comment, and if he made a comment Evy would likely never speak to him again - never mind sleep with him. She had warned him so many times as she'd arranged their quaint get together.
"Terrible idea," He muttered again under his breath, edging around the tables towards the two girls as he shrugged out of his coat. A grin stretched the creases in his cheeks as he cut a cold hand under Evy's hair to palm her neck in greeting. "Alright, Trelawney." He gave her a sharp nod, bending at the waist to knock his chin briefly to the side of Evy's head. He straightened only to carefully place his coat over the back of his chair before he slung himself in it with a sigh. "Imagine dragging us all the way out to Ireland for a bit of dinner," He teased with a quirk of his brows. He cast Evy a look from the corner of his eye, as if to tell her, 'See... I am behaving'. But, Simon hadn't even arrived yet.

Simons afternoon in Dublin had been fantastic. He stopped by an old friend from Hogwarts' art gallery to drop off a few pieces, and he was surprised that they sold. After getting caught up in a black hole of a conversation about quidditch with a group of goons, he realized he was running behind schedule now. Simon was supposed to meet Luna and Evy for dinner and drinks any minute now. After taking his money, he quickly dismissed himself, excited to share the news with Luna. A part of him was dreading seeing Evy, considering he knew she wasn't the biggest fan of him after what happened a year prior. Since he had a sister, he understood that girls...talked. Hell, he eavesdropped enough of his sisters slumber parties in the past to know that. Simon was confident he could earn Evy's approval, he just wasn't sure what angle he'd have to take for that, yet.
The half-vamp apparated with a crack into the alleyway behind the restaurant, his breath hanging in the dewey air as he located the entrance. Simon ducked into bustling, hipster playground, eyes scanning the room for his girlfriend. Oddly enough, he noticed someone else first...Mother. Fucking. Nate. Forrester. Why in the name of Merlin was that degenerate sitting across from Luna - with Evy tucked beside him? This was too fucking weird. Simon froze, unsure if his eyes were suddenly deceiving him. It wouldn't be the first time.
As he got closer, his fears were confirmed: that was definitely the nightmare trifecta sitting before him. He wasn't sure if he was being set up. Was this some sort of intervention? Something deep down inside triggered his inner alarms, sending his guard into full alert like he used to experience at school. That wasn't a good feeling.
"Wassup, guys!" Simon stopped in front of the table with a strained smile. The amount of effort it took to feign easygoingness in that moment around Nate was almost comical. Simon didn't miss a beat to slip into the chair next to Luna at the sinfully tiny table, offering her a look of utter 'what in the actual bloody hell is goin on' before capturing her lips into a kiss. Okay, maybe he knew it would annoy Nate a bit...considering...many things. So he lingered for a moment too long. Simon pulled away only to greet the pair and not be rude. He nodded politely with a smile mostly to Evy, "Evy...Nate." His jaw clenched, tightly.
The waiter made eye contact with him and quickly scurried over to the table. Sometimes he wasn't sure if that was vampire charm or what but he'd take it. Simon immediately took initiative, knowing that it was going to be that sort of night alright.

A spider web and I'm caught in the middle It was chilly, but it was better than being stuck at school by herself. Aside from her classmates that had also transferred, Evy hadn’t really bothered to make new friends. Not that the Beauxbatons students were all that interested in mingling with the attitudes of Evy or Nessa by any means. The thought of it sat uncomfortably in her stomach. She missed Hogwarts. She missed her friends. She missed everything that felt normal. Even seeing Luna felt different, and she had a boyfriend now to top it off. Evy couldn’t quite say she was envious. She wanted nothing but happiness for her best friend. But it was all different now—so distant.
But then she spotted the blonde, and a smile gleamed on Evy’s face. ”Absolutely.” Evy agreed. If anything, she might get a second bottle and see if Simon dared to complain. Evy hugged her back just as strongly. Change was not something Evy had ever dealt with very well. The past year had been so full of them, along with surprises. For example, finding herself in Hogsmeade while not even two days home for the Christmas break. An escape to find something familiar and avoid home where her sisters barely kept themselves from tearing each other’s eyes out. Thankfully Evy could just distract Sebastian, if anything, on most days.
They walked into the restaurant, and they were seated quickly. ”To us.” Evy agreed, and they waited for the bottle to arrive. ”So…” Evy leaned forward, placing her chin on her hands with her eyebrows slightly raised. ”It's been a whole month, and you’ve barely told me anything.” No news was probably good news, but Evy didn’t like to feel left out. Plus, it would give her something to think about when she had to talk to Simon. There was no doubt that Simon would try to be perfectly polite and charming to Evy, but she hadn’t forgotten the previous year.
Evy was about to ask more, but she felt something cold—a hand slip to touch her neck, and she had to stop herself from reacting. The restaurant was warm, and it hadn’t taken her long to defrost from being outside, but Nate’s hand was still icy. She sat back and looked up as he greeted Luna and then her. Evy glanced at Luna for a second before back at Nate, who was already being himself. One eyebrow went up as he spoke. ”If only you’d hadn’t left your manners behind.” She quipped back. Despite all of Evy’s misgivings about Simon, she still felt some flutter of nervousness at what would apparently be a full table for dinner. At least Evy wouldn’t feel so outnumbered.
And it didn’t take long for another loud greeting to distract them all. Simon had arrived. Evy’s eyes followed him until he sat down, wondering if this boy who’d been a year ahead of them had really grown up. She also wanted to avoid whatever look had probably appeared on Nate’s face. Though it might have been better than watching this little bit of PDA. Evy had already warned Nate to watch what he said, or she’d happily block him on her phone. ”Nice to see you Simon.” Evy responded. She grinned slightly, but Evy had never been all that good at pretending. She just hoped that bubbly would arrive before the tequila.

Evy was equally delighted to see Luna, and pleased by her suggestion. With a smirk, Luna ordered the bottle of prosecco, careful not to order the most expensive one but also not the cheapest one. The waiter brought it over directly, and Luna and Evy clinked glasses, toasting to themselves. ”All is well. You know, we had lots of lost time to make up for…” said Luna, giving Evy a meaningful look before dissolving into laughter. Luna was so enraptured by the company that it wasn’t until she heard the scraping of a chair across from her that she noticed they’d been joined by someone else.
The bright smile on Luna’s face dimmed significantly - her distaste evident for only a moment before she managed to smooth her features into a mask of indifference. ”Didn’t know I’d have the pleasure of seeing you today, Nathaniel,” said Luna, her tone cool despite her inner turmoil. She considered scrabbling for her phone to message Simon, to warn him that Nate was here. Luna turned to Evy, her stare piercing. I didn’t realise he was coming today, Luna conveyed with her narrowed eyes, before turning back to Nate. ”Has the ministry been treating you well?” she asked cordially. Her hand reached surreptitiously for her bag, but it was too late. Like a whirlwind, Simon burst through the door.
Luna knew the moment Simon saw Nate. A flurry of emotions crossed his face, each one more evident than the last to Luna. She knew him like a science, having studied him for months on end. He greeted her with a sound kiss, one she was only too eager to return. Luna gripped his hand under the table, leaning over to mutter in his ear. ”I didn’t know he was coming to this.” Her voice was barely above a hiss, nearly inaudible.
Luna’s eyes swivelled amongst her company at the table. The tension was so thick, she could cut it with a knife. Thankfully, Luna was able to down her glass of prosecco and promptly fill herself back up. There was an awkward silence that stretched for too long, before Luna finally broke it. ”Well, this is a happy little reunion, isn’t it?” She smirked with a feigned sweetness. ”Evy. Has Nessa turned out half decent? Or is she still a cruel and unredeemable bitch?” asked Luna, her grey eyes lighting on her friend. She was spared an immediate answer by the round of shots that were placed on their table, followed by a filthy look from the waiter. Luna wasted no time in downing the liquid, hating the way it burned her throat. Through a grimace, Luna spoke again. ”Sadly I haven’t had any interesting visions lately. Can’t even check up on you,” she added, feeling more and more uncomfortable. She shot Evy a pleading look, not sure how to steer this into more comfortable waters.
As if it was possible.

feb 2027 'YOU NEVER SAID I HAD TO BRING MY MANNERS." Nate replied to the sharp chastisement, grinning with an almost feral cheer as he took his seat. Evy had told him not to ruin dinner by fighting with Simon, she hadn't said he had to be polite. Though, as he cast a careful eye over to Luna Trewlaney, he almost felt a bit bad for her. She'd been nice enough. And she was clearly infatuated with Svendsen, otherwise why bring a half vampire to dinner? He had a way of bagging girls who were way out of his league, Nate reckoned it had something to do with the vampire blood in him. "The Ministry's alright, I'm busy enough." He replied with a nod. He did not mention the pizza place.
When Simon finally arrived it confirmed what he already knew. Sitting a little straighter in his chair, his tongue mapping out a chunk of his cheek to chew on instead of opening his mouth. Hairs rising on the back of his neck as he greeted the table loudly, and without pause. Had he known Nate was coming, and he didn't even have the bollocks to like a bit contrite? He supposed, for Simon, time had passed. He'd always forgiven a bit too easy for Nate's taste. He much preferred the slower, more painful kind of grudges.
When Simon bent to catch Luna's mouth, Nate rolled his eyes. He snogged Luna like he wasn't going to get beat the shit out of for it it. Tongues at dinner? Alas, it felt fairly typical and Nate fought a sneering smirk as he leaned back in his chair and slung an arm around the back of Evy's chair without saying hello back. Turning his head slightly to ask her, without saying anything, what she was trying to accomplish here. Unfortunately, he couldn't ask Simon the same thing as he'd just used the last of his sour Chaser breath mapping the inside of Trewlaney's mouth. It felt purposeful, like a crude reminder of who else Simon Svendsen sloppy, open mouth kissed. Luna whispered frantically in to Simon's ear. Maybe he hadn't forgotten after all.
Tequila was a bad idea, but Nate didn't protest in his bought silence. Running a careful finger up behind Evy's ear and down along the back of her neck to rest between his shoulder blades. A reminder of why he couldn't use the fancy vase in the middle of the table to knock the bones out of Simon's smoke callused fingertips.
And then, as if to fill the thick tension that blanketed the table, Luna's shrill frantic voice picked up from its previous whisper and Nate's hand froze where it lay softly on Evy's back, his fingertips digging in just a little bit, the only noticeable shift in his demeanour. Evy had made Nate promise not to ruin dinner by fighting with Simon, but he'd made no such promise for Luna. His teeth catching and tearing the skin at his cheek as he rolled his shoulders back carefully, the bones popping under his jumper. Nessa wasn't at dinner, Nessa was off limits. The shots arrived and Nate grabbed his own and knocked it back, almost knocking Luna's shaky, Beater knuckles out of the way as he did. He threw it back with a jerk of his chin, setting it down deliberately on the table between them as he cleared the burn from his throat.
"So, Luna..." He let her name roll around in his mouth, eyes flickering over to catch Simon's eye carefully before flickering away. "Are you the Trewlaney triplet that dropped out before seventh year?" He asked with an almost innocent quirk of his brow. "Or... the one that fucked off to Europe without you?" He tilted his head, almost rocking back in his chair as the tequila seared a path into his empty, roiling gut. "Did you see that one coming?" He drawled rhythmically, taking his hand away from Evy's back before she could decide to pull it from the socket.

A spider web and I'm caught in the middle One didn’t have to be clairvoyant to note the annoyance in Luna’s voice and demeanor. Though Evy could have sworn that she’d told Luna that Nate would be attending, it was all too late for that now. But as far as Evy knew, Luna didn’t have an issue with Nate. His reputation, perhaps, but she was the one dating Simon Svendsen of all people. Evy’s plus one shouldn’t have been an issue. Evy looked at Nate, giving him a quick look—he wasn’t a child, and Evy didn’t need to outline what should have been obvious. Be polite and civil, and they could get through this dinner in one piece without any yelling or worse.
But not even Evy could deny the tension that immediately grew from Simon’s arrival. Now the four of them sat around a table that was probably too small. As Simon’s tongue refamiliarized itself with Luna’s mouth, Evy leaned back in her chair, feeling the material of Nate’s sweater from his arm behind her. She took a generous sip of her wine. One bottle was not going to cut it. Finally, the new couple separated themselves, and Evy’s eyes moved between the both of them, wondering how in the world Simon had convinced Luna to date him again—especially after what happened last year. But she was focusing on them, so she didn’t think about the goosebumps on her arms and chill up her spine as Nate’s finger moved down her neck. Like he was trying to distract her from watching his every move.
But it was quickly forgotten as Luna directed a question to her, she felt Nate’s hand tense, but Evy also felt herself tense. Nessa had always been a classmate in their year, and nothing more really. But Evy didn’t have anyone at Beauxbatons except the very few familiar faces from Hogwarts and even less that she could stand. For a split second, Evy didn’t know how to answer—she certainly didn’t take kindly to the comment as she had become friends with Nessa over the year, beginning with their protest of the uniforms. ”Well, I don’t make a habit of calling my friends ‘cruel’ and ‘unredeemable’.” Evy responded as the shot glasses were placed on the table. Evy’s hand retracted as Nate’s flew in first and almost pushed Luna’s entirely out of the way. Then she grabbed her own glass to drink the liquid, it burned as it traveled down her throat. And she looked at Luna to respond. ”You—“ But was cut off by Nate speaking up, and she looked at him. Evy’s hand rested on the middle of Nate’s thigh, perhaps to help him stay calm or to acknowledge that she disagreed with what Luna had said. While Nate had never spoken at length to Evy about Nessa, it was always obvious to her that they were close.
The remark had certainly hit a nerve, she noted, by the way, his hand had tensed on her back. And Evy held her breath slightly as he spoke about Luna’s sisters, and she noted she held her breath a little as the tequila still burned in her throat. But—what Evy had not expected was that last part, and Evy had to use every ounce of willpower not to snicker or even smirk. Though the corner of her mouth facing Nate did flinch just a tiny biting and her hand tensed on his leg for a few moments before relaxing. She cleared her throat before drinking from her wine glass to hopefully hide whatever expression was breaking through. Laughing at that moment would have been disastrous for many reasons. Upsetting Luna would upset Simon and possibly cause a scene, her eyes glanced over to Simon and then to Luna.

warning: language
The tension in the room was unbearable. Simon felt like he was being suffocated. There wasn’t enough air in here with Nate Forrester, threatening to bump knees at any moment. His jaw clenched, watching Nate as he spoke to Luna.
Simon expected Nate to be an asshole to him, his overall demeanor wasn’t any surprise this evening. But when Luna asked about Nessa. Merlin, he knew she fucked up; especially after calling her cruel and unredeemable. Simon's breath caught in his throat as he watched Nate closely from across the table. Nessa and Nate were close, they experienced the trauma of orphanages together for many years and had a special bond. There was no way he’d let that slide when she wasn’t here to defend herself. Simon knew Nate better than that.
And oh, Nate didn’t let it slide. Simon released Luna’s hand from under the table, only to grab a shot and knock it back with one swift motion. He needed anything to soothe his nerves. Hell, his adrenaline was through the roof. He'd need five more of those.
His icy daggers fell to Evy first, since she seemed like she was going to say something. Maybe defend her supposedly best friend Luna, but she almost looked like she wanted to laugh. Well. Couldn't really expect anything less sitting at a table full of Slytherins...
Shaking his head slowly, he bit down the inside of cheek, hard. The taste of iron filled his mouth. He was trying to refrain from any outbursts but Nate took it too far talking to Luna in such a hostile way. Simons anger boiled inside his core before slamming the shot glass back on the table, ”Don't you fuckin' talk to her like that you motherfucker-shut your fucking mouth, Nate!” he spat quickly, his knee shot up and hit the table, sending the flower vase and glasses to wobble on the top surface. A couple of patrons turned in their seats due to the sudden commotion but Simon wasn't paying attention to that.
Well, things were definitely escalating..

Luna didn’t miss the glare Nate threw her way as she mentioned Nessa. She had momentarily forgotten that she and Nate were close. And apparently, so was Evy and Nessa. Evy’s cool response threw Luna, who flinched before she could stop herself. ”So she can be redeemed after all,” she added, gripping her glass so tightly she was surprised it didn’t shatter in her hand.
Though Nate’s comments were unkind, they didn’t land as he perhaps had hoped they would. Luna was much more concerned with the fact that Evy was suppressing a laugh. Her best friend - laughing at her. Rage boiled up in her but she forced it down, especially as Simon made an utter fool of himself. ”Simon, that’s enough,” said Luna sharply. She returned her attention to Nate and Evy, feeling as if a battle of the wills was going on. She didn’t like being on the opposite side of Evy - it felt wrong and unfamiliar. But Evy had drawn her line in the sand, and it was not with Luna.
With an imperious sniff, Luna spoke. ”If that’s all you’ve got, Nathaniel, you’re losing your acidic touch,” said Luna, her tone lofty and her face neutral. ”If you knew me at all, which I am now running under the impression that you do not, you would remember that I do not have the gift of foresight. I see things as they happen. And I would say that my lot turned out better - getting scouted straight out of school for a professional Quidditch team is no mean feat,” said Luna, her glare hardening. ”Now, if you’re done acting foolish, I think we should have a look at the menu.” Luna hadn’t missed the filthy looks they’d been receiving from the other patrons in the restaurant. One woman even leaned over to whisper to her partner, her sneer evident from across the room. With a sigh, Luna looked down at the menu. Suddenly, she had no appetite at all. She just wanted to get this over with then spend time alone with Evy. To understand what exactly had gone wrong. And maybe to chew her out a bit.
”So, Evy. I heard the food at Beauxbatons is lovely. Would you agree?” asked Luna. She would never eat the stuff, not with how coated in butter it was. She had mostly recovered from her eating disorder, but all the same… Luna wasn’t perfect.

feb 2027 THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER WAS, NATE NEVER really cared about his aim. He was often barbed, but it wasn't about hitting the heart, it was more about hitting something at all. Nessa had always been the one with the better aim. So, when Nate's comments glanced off of Trelawney's icy exterior, it was only with the barest amount of disappointment. His eye catching the slight lift of Evy's mouth in his peripheral vision. How she pressed tightly against his thigh, as if to reprimand, but leaned towards him, rather than away. It felt like a win.
Of course, nothing pleased him more than the crimson flush that overtook Simon's face all at once. His eye shifting from Luna's stony expression to where Simon burst fourth with movement, the thud of his knee under the table, jostling the vase and wine bottle atop. Sending their cutlery jangling angrily. Nate's free hand reached out with a languid ease, stilling the vase in place as his expression was overwhelmed by an unfettered grin. His head tilted in calculation as Luna scolded him like a child, inciting a snicker from Nate that he made no move to stifle.
"Yeah, Si." He tutted, thumb circling between Evy's shoulder blades once more before he removed his arm from around her chair to set both atop the table. "Heel," He commanded under his breath, brows lifting as he made the humiliation all the more rotten by appearing so utterly amused. They used to be friends, thought Nate, how were they ever friends? And then he remembered bitterly, and his smile wavered at the corners of his mouth. With that, he rolled his head lazily on his neck. Turning to look at Luna with an almost secondary attention, brows lifting carelessly.
"I never said that I knew you," He drawled with a light shrug, pressing his knee against Evy's as an afterthought. He wasn't fighting, not really. it didn't matter if Luna could see the past through the hole in her arse, that wasn't really the point. It was a barb for a barb, he wasn't about to let her swing freely at Nessa when she wasn't present to return the favour in earnest. And it had worked, as the atmosphere shifted, like lines drawn on a battlefield. "But, it is kind of you to make the effort and clarify, I'll do my best to remember." He said without an inch of true sincerity, narrowing his eyes slyly as he leaned back in his chair lazily.
"Well, since we're talking of fools." Nate said in conversation, kissing his teeth as he cast a sideways look at Simon. "How's the knee?" And then he licked his bottom lip and let it lie between them. Let Luna make a concentrated effort to inspect her menu like she wasn't shivering with restless energy. Let Simon stew in his own misplaced anger and Evy pretend like they weren't the worst group of people to eat together in recent magical history. It was all so bitterly entertaining. He turned his head as Luna addressed Evy, that fake grin plastered on his mouth as he hooked their ankles under the table and raised his brows, rapt with amused attention.

Simon swallowed dryly as Luna told him 'enough' after defending her, following with a weak attempt to change the subject by asking Evy about Beauxbatons food. His blood boiled with rage. Nobody at that table cared about what people ate at that snobby French school..
Luna knew Simon better than that. Her boyfriend wasn't the type of guy to let something go with a quick change of subject. Fuck being civil. Especially for anything concerning Nathaniel Forrestor. His fierce Gryffindor pride wouldn't allow it. He took a breath, which only seemed to fuel his inner turmoil. Simon couldn't believe Luna would put him in such a stressful situation. The boys' relationshit history wasn't exactly a secret around Hogwarts towards the end.
When Nate spoke directly to Simon, calling him a fool and asking about his knee....All he could do was see red. The proud look on Nates face made Simon want to jump across the table and rearrange it. Simon wasn't sure where all of this misplaced anger was coming from suddenly. He was caught completely off gaurd with his emotions. As much as Simon missed the friendship he and Nate had, he didn't miss the constant frustration he constatly put him through.
Biting the inside of his cheek, he shifted to look at Luna and darted his eyes to Evy with an apologetic look, a sigh passing his lips as he contemplated what to do. Simon ran a hand through his messy hair, "Yeah, I'm not going to do this..." he spat quickly, deciding he'd deal with repercussions from Luna later. Simon shoved the table towards Nates chest, attempting to avoid Evy the best that he could with how close in proximity they were sitting. The vase of flowers fell over, causing water to spill on Nate and Evy's side of the table and glasses breaking.

A spider web and I'm caught in the middle Evy didn’t have to look to feel Simon’s eyes on her, but she didn’t particularly care what the former Gryffindor thought. There was no trust in him, and Evy found she’d rather trust Nate of all people, despite the reputation he had built for himself over their school years. Though there was something about him, something she couldn’t put a word to or her finger on, that was something to think through later. But the unwarranted comment about Nessa was just that. Though Evy felt defensive of one of the few friends she had at that school while Luna had decided to go on and live her life with Evy left in the dust. Her grey eyes glanced at the boy ready to leap out of his chair—the replacement, or so she liked to think in the back of her mind.
Luna told Simon to calm down and then turned to respond to Nate. Evy didn’t remark. She hadn’t told Nate many details of Luna outside of the occasional lament on friendship and what it all meant. Besides, the pair weren’t keen on conversation—though they would always end up talking despite how unplanned it was. But Luna was right. They should probably order some food now that wine and tequila were in the mix. And just to move this dinner along. She had been concerned with Nate and Simon in the same room but had failed to see how Nate might interact with Luna. She skimmed the menu. Her mind was distracted by Nate’s purposeful contact of his knee with hers.
Evy shifted her leg. While Nate was technically not starting any fights with Simon, he wasn’t helping the tense situation either. The petty part of her wanted to withhold all physical contact if he was going to behave like this, but she had to admit that seeing Luna realize that Evy wasn’t quite the Evy from before had some satisfaction. It was mean, perhaps, but that sense of being left behind fueled her. Simon was already making a fool of himself in Evy’s eyes with his previous outburst, at least Nate acting with some semblance of manners—barely. Luna then addressed Evy, who cleared her throat as she perused the menu. While her eyes looked at Luna, her brain was again distracted by Nate’s foot this time.
”It isn’t Hogwarts.” She responded. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t Evy’s favorite either. ”They make quite a fuss about etiquette and all that.” Which was true, but she leaned heavily on the word as the four of them had shown they had absolutely none when it came to this dinner. Evy closed her menu and leaned back in her chair as she raised her wine glass once again, her other hand seeming to fall in her lap but really had fallen conveniently close to Nate’s. He was distracting her, but she was used to playing along with his games.
But Evy felt herself freeze a moment, Simon’s expression had changed but his look toward Evy was different. Nate addressing him and Luna tell him to calm down was obviously not the optimal combination. Before she could even think to take a breath Simon stood up and the table shifted in her direction. ”What the—“ She pushed back on her chair as hard as she could. But, of course, Nate decided this tense dinner was the perfect occasion to play footsie under the table and Evy didn’t move far enough as the drinks spilled on them. People were looking at them from the surrounding tables, but Evy was just irate now. ”What the hell, Simon. You didn’t tell me your boyfriend was a fucking troll, Luna.” He was certainly acting like one. Like some hot-headed idiot that was also immensely stupid and simple minded. Evy stood up and grabbed her wand where it had fallen to deal with the various drinks that had spilled on her.
