While you were out building other worlds where was I? Home sweet home, or so they say. Evelyn hadn’t been home that long from school, but she was happy to be somewhere that felt far more familiar than that Castle in France she’d been shipped off to. Most of the former Hogwarts had gotten back to the UK via portkey, including Evy. It was quite a distance to apparate, which was far safer for the young students. But as soon as she’d stepped through the door, greeted her parents, and seen her second oldest sister—Evy felt this urge to leave. It was nice to see her parents and sister Mina and Sarah were both working and see her room and her things, but the feeling hadn’t left her.
So Evelyn made some excuse about needing some school supplies and last-minute Christmas shopping, and without even really thinking—she was in Hogsmeade. The second her feet hit that cobblestone path, she wondered what Luna might have said. Perhaps some snarky comment or a judgmental raise of an eyebrow. It wasn’t where she had gone but rather who she had gone looking for. And she’d found him. But as Christmas fast approached, Evy was home, waiting to begin this precious family time she used to enjoy so much when she was far younger and still blind to certain dynamics of her family.
Callisto was at work, her father would be home soon, and her mother had stepped out to buy something at Diagon Alley or somewhere—Evy hadn’t been listening when her mother had said she was leaving. Sebastian wasn’t even around—he was with his father, and was Sarah even here? Honestly, she felt like she was in a bit of a daze, and rather than look for anyone to talk to, Evelyn curled up on the end of the couch in the living room, her back against the armrest and her feet up and pointing toward the middle. Her notebook lay flat against her thighs, and she kept alternating between writing, thinking, and daydreaming. It had been hard to write these past months as if her inspiration had been left behind in the smoldering ruins of Hogwarts Castle. With a frustrated sigh, she closed her notebook, pulled out her phone, and scrolled through that instead.

▲ The yuletide season was always hard for Mina to be upset at. On one hand, the week leading up to Christmas - the one where all the students were back home - meant an unbelievably busy Flourish & Blotts. One the other, Evy and the rest of the family were home. It meant Callisto would whine to their parents in her wine drunk state instead of berating Mina for silly things, and all the dogs could keep each other company. The only drawback was seeing Sarah, but her presence was typically overwritten by Sebastian's. Not this year though. He was with his father, and that meant Sarah was with them. Mina had avoided seeing her so far today, unsure if she was even around at all. Callisto was at work still. No rest at St. Mungo's ever. Probably a lot of helicopter parents bringing their kids in because they were hexed during the school year with extra appendages or untamable ear hair. Silly stuff like that. The absence of her older sisters was perfectly fine though. Mina only had one on her mind, and she'd been waiting since September to see Evy. Having gotten off her final shift for the Christmas season, she immediately went home and grabbed the dog and took off to the Oliveira family home. It was a small house considering, and she'd been forced to share rooms her entire life because of it. Some would even call it cramped. Mina enjoyed it though, especially this time of year with the gaudy decorations and strings of snowflakes made out of construction paper that she and her siblings had made when younger. As much as she enjoyed her apartment she shared with Callisto, this was still home. "Hello!" Mina called as she popped the front door open, letting go of Titania's leash without unhooking it first. The samoyed bolted inside, already trying to locate the family dogs wherever they were. Stamping out the dwindling cigarette she'd had squeezed between her lips, Mina followed her dog in. The dogs had found one another, but there didn't seem to be any signs of other Oliveiras around. Looping her jacket over a hook by the door and kicking her boots off, she tip-toed around the dogs as they playfully fought, re-directing any that came to give her a welcome nose-bump back into the furry fray. Entering the living room, she almost didn't see Evy at first, her younger sister nestled into the couch. "Evy," Mina hummed, elongating her sister's name as she navigated the room to get to her. "Merry Christmas! How was France? I missed you." She leaned over the couch to try and pull Evy into an awkward hug, knowing that her sister would probably balk at it. While you were out building other worlds where was I? The biggest room in the house was the living room. Evy would have instead hidden away in her half of her room, but she’d already been in there most of the day and opted for a change of scenery. It was still strange to technically have her own room, and it had been years since Callisto and Mina had moved out—but Evy still felt like the room was not entirely hers. Evy kind of missed the chaos of a full house, sharing a room with Mina and Callisto barging in to make sure Mina wasn’t teaching a very small Evelyn swear words that she’d learned from either Sarah or Dakoda. With the age gap to her older siblings, it helped Evy feel closer to them.
She heard the front door open, and one of her sisters loudly entered. It could only be Mina. Callisto would never. Evy could hear the panting of a dog and quick footsteps on the floor as her parent’s dogs bolted from the room to see who had arrived. Titania approached the couch where her feet met Evy’s leg, and Evy smiled and scratched her head before running off again. And not soon after she heard her own name, Evy looked behind her to see Mina quickly approaching. ”Terrible.” Evy answered simply, returning the awkward hug with a free arm only after taking a moment to register it. After Sarah had helped her get out of Hogwarts and found her in the village, Mina and Callisto seemed to wonder what their youngest sister was doing at all times.
It was still odd. While Evy had never been completely ignored, she wasn’t used to this much attention. And if she was being honest, it was weird—especially when she wanted to be left alone these days. ”Mum went to the store…or something.” She hadn’t been listening when her mother had left, only robotically acknowledging that she was leaving. ”Dad and Sarah aren’t here yet.” They would be home at some point, though it was a fifty-fifty chance that her dad was stuck late at work again. ”What’s got you in such a good mood?” Evy asked, still scrolling absentmindedly through her phone and her little corner of the couch.

▲ At least she got a sort of hug before the inevitable negative response came out. Mina sort of got it, but also didn’t. School was school. She would have killed to have gone somewhere else for a year, mostly because the other teachers wouldn’t know who she was and just chalk up her problems as being a result of the transfer. Plus all those new people to talk to! The French were the French though, and the Beauxbatons alumni she had run into always seemed like they had a stick up their backsides. That or they thought they were better than her. Which they probably were, but that was beside the point. Being her normal nonchalant self around Evy wasn’t going to cut it these days though. Mina wanted to make sure her sister knew that she actually cared about her. She always had, obviously, but the scare at Hogwarts had pushed her over the edge. Losing Dakoda had been bad enough. Listening to her sister talk about where everyone was (and thankfully Sarah wasn’t around yet) was so stupidly normal that it had her grinning. This was the sort of thing she missed about being home. Living with Callisto was great and all, but she never wanted to talk when she got home from work. Or at least until she had two glasses of wine in her. That decompression was a pain to be honest. “I’m just happy you’re home,” she responded, moving around to the end of the couch so that she could peer onto her sister’s phone to see what she was doing. “I can’t remember if you told me before you left, but did any of your friends end up going there too?” Probably not if it was terrible. There seemed to have been a decent amount of Hogwarts students going though, as the book orders at work had been a great way to tell who was going where. “Oh! Do they give you days of like Hogsmeade? I could pop over one time if they do.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

While you were out building other worlds where was I? Home felt normal and comfortable, but Evy never got used to Dakoda not being around. It didn’t seem like any of them had, but nobody talked about it. Sometimes her mother would have a bit too much wine, and if it was close to the full moon, her emotions were on her sleeve, and Evy might hear her late brother’s name from a mother who missed her only son. Mina seemed incredibly enthusiastic that Evy was home—as if all that time where Evy was at Hogwarts and nearby never happened. Evelyn wasn’t bitter or anything. She’d only been stuck alone in France fending for herself for months now.
Evy noted when a shadow crossed the screen of her phone and right when a banner appeared notifying her of a new message. While she had been absent-mindedly scrolling through social media, Evy knew better than to open a message from Nathaniel Forrester in front of her sister since Evy knew he was hardly the type to just say hello. Quickly with her thumb, she cleared the notification, but Evy flipped her phone over to cover the screen while peering back up at Mina. ”What?” Callisto was the one who was voted most likely to nitpick at what their siblings were doing on their phones.
Shifting in her seat, she sat normally. Evy locked her phone and placed it face down on the couch next to her—and away from prying eyes. ”No.” Trying to hide the disappointment in her face was a failure. While the students at Hogwarts or Beaxbatons couldn’t read her often deadpan expression, the family was different. It wasn’t as if she didn’t have any friends. Evy and Nessa had gravitated toward one another as familiar faces and old housemates. Plus, Evy learned quickly that Nessa wasn’t always the prickly personality most made her out to be. ”Most transferred to Ilvermorny.” She spoke simply, stretching a bit from being in that cramped position on the couch. Her grey eyes landed back on her sister. ”No—just half term and the usual.” At least this time, Evy didn’t try and hide her disappointment, but she focused on petting Titania, who had run into the room panting as she placed her paws on Evy’s knees.

December 23, 2026 Christmastime could be a strange time of year in general, but it was even more so for Sarah, who was only celebrating her second Christmas with her family since Azkaban had fallen. Since then, a lot had changed, but some things hadn't. She still didn't have custody of her own son, though she had been working to strengthen her "good girl" image ever since Elaine Dupree's being out of the picture made that much easier for her to accomplish. She had her own flat with the money she'd made from her Magical Interpol job, and she felt compelled to stay in the position not because of Elaine but because of the paycheck she got.
With Evelyn home from Beauxbatons, Sarah had made her way back to their parents', where half the house seemed frozen in time. There were still plenty of reminders of Dakoda, but Sarah had learned to live with those. What had happened had happened, and she had never wanted to have the sort of mushy familial ties that some other people had. Besides, living in a family of multiple werewolves meant that things weren't completely "normal" anyway. The full moon on Christmas Eve meant that any chance of a perfect Christmas was a joke, so making up for it while she and their parents were all three miserable was one way to go about remedying that.
Recognizing when she arrived that that Mina was already there by the presence of her jacket and boots, Sarah knew that she would have to prepare herself. At least it didn't look like Callisto had gotten there before her, she thought as she removed her own cloak and boots. Despite being older than both Callisto and Mina, they had their opinions on what she had done with her life. Getting an earful from Callisto that close to the full moon wasn't something that excited Sarah, but at least she had the other "time of the month" as an excuse.
Hearing Mina and Evelyn conversing, Sarah walked into the living room with the bag of presents she was carrying. Mina's dog, Titania, was distracted by having the youngest Oliveira there, though Sarah wasn't completely certain that the Samoyed wouldn't make a beeline for the gifts she'd come bearing. She set the bag against the wall, glancing at the lead that Titania still had clipped on. It would have been more useful if Mina were actually holding it, she felt. "Happy Christmas," Sarah greeted both her sisters plainly, though she focused more on Evelyn than on Mina.

▲ Her sneak ability clearly wasn't at one-hundred like it used to be, and her casual slide around the couch to see what Evy was doing on her phone wasn't stealthy in the slightest. "What?" Mina echoed back to her sister, a grin on her face. That notification that popped up had gotten cleared really fast. "Do they let you have your phones at Beauxbatons? I can't imagine you get cell service out there." That would have driven her crazy back in the day. Then again, she only ever had her phone while home, so it wasn't like she was missing out on much. With all the students split between the schools, it only made sense to her if they were allowing the magic-tech so that everyone could keep in contact. Her want for a full conversation didn't seem to be working out that well, Evy giving her brief answers about her friends and how there was only the usual breaks. Well that blew. "How about I pick you up at the end of term? Make a trip out of it. Her boss would give her time off for something like that. Especially for her sister's graduation. "Wait...mum and dad will be there for your graduation too," she scrunched her nose up. Unless Hogwarts students were having their graduation elsewhere, where they could all be together? "Either way, we should go on a trip once you're free." Mina had started to reach around the couch to scratch her dog's ears when she heard the front door open. Titania's fluff perked up though she remained by their sides as the family dogs tore towards the front of the house. A few moments later and Sarah entered, bearing gifts. She kept her lips tightly pursed, thinking about what to say. Escalating first meant she'd be the bad person, and so far Sarah wasn't giving any indication that she was here for a fight. Though saying 'Happy Christmas' was certainly out of character. "Happy Christmas," Mina returned, before grabbing both sides of her dog's face and smooshing them together in a rubbing motion. "You like all this attention, don't you?" she cooed at Titania, who didn't look particularly more enthralled than usual. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

While you were out building other worlds where was I? Mina had that mischievous look, one that typically amused Evy as it would precede some sarcastic comment to Callisto or some action that would make her sister quickly pour a glass of wine. But Evy wanted her privacy. It was a rarity in this family where five children shared rooms and space and easily got into each other’s things. Plus, Mina knew Nate and a few people Evy spoke to regularly. ”Nothing.” Evy responded defensively, a bit of a sullen expression lingering on her face. ”My phone works fine there. They just don’t let us have them in class.” Not that it stopped anybody.
That almost made it worse for Evy. Having the ability of quick and constant communication and yet days would go by without hearing from Luna or others. It made her feel very small in a big world. And the schools couldn’t stop it even if they wanted to. So many students were so far away from home. Hogwarts had been in Scotland, which was a stone’s throw away from London compared to France or the eastern coast of the United States. Mina spoke again, and Evy didn’t answer right away. She knew Mina was trying, even if this level of effort was new for Evelyn. Mentally she took a breath and tried her best to not be a killjoy at Christmas this year. They couldn’t really celebrate like normal when Sarah and their parents had a full moon on Christmas Eve.
Evy’s eyes moved from Titania’s happy face back to Mina. ”That would be nice.” They were the youngest of the group. Evy had spent more time with Mina than anyone despite how it all changed as they grew older—five years was a significant age gap. ”Where would we go?” She was genuinely curious. Mina had traveled a bit, while Evy had only seen the same handful of places her whole life. The door opened, and Evy felt something in the room shift. It was like feeling a sudden temperature change, and as soon as she saw her other sister in the doorway, Evy felt her body tense up a bit. She didn’t like it when her family fought. Nothing had been the same since Dakoda died, and while Evy hadn’t let that stop her from having a relationship with her oldest sister—others thought differently. ”Happy Christmas.” Evy responded, looking at Sarah with a quick half-smile. ”Is dad coming home soon then?” They both worked in the Ministry, so Evy assumed he would follow shortly if Sarah was here.

December 23, 2026 Both Mina and Evelyn seemed sort of surprised that she had actually shown up, which was probably warranted. She didn't have the best track record of sticking around her family, and even Christmas hadn't been enough of a draw in the past. In fact, Mina sounded more excited that her dog was getting the opportunity to run around than she was to see her. Sarah was just amazed that the Samoyed didn't snap at her owner for messing with her face as though she were a plush toy and not an actual canine.
Evelyn at least smiled a bit at her, which was more than Mina had done. (She'd had the opportunity to sic the dog on her and hadn't done that, though, so that was a win.) Evelyn also asked if their father would be coming home soon—presumably since they both would be coming from the Ministry.
"Probably," Sarah answered, not that she had heard from him or their mother either way. "I haven't seen him, but the full moon's at one in the morning." That meant that their parents would be back well before then so that they could all take their respective doses of Wolfsbane Potion and sleep off their transformations—the epitome of family bonding. Sarah just wanted it to be done and over with. Running free had always appealed to her more, though that wasn't feasible without going into a forest somewhere. "Is Mum not here?" she questioned.

▲ Mina felt silly for not attempting to text Evy throughout the fall, having assumed that Beauxbatons hadn't figured out the whole bit with technology yet. That time of year was always busy too. Once students were gone and off to school, lot of parents ended up coming by the bookstore to get gifts for Christmas. There was maybe a week break in there somewhere, usually stifled by an author wanting to do a signing now that the kids were out of the way. Her boss called said that was so children wouldn't 'stifle the atmosphere'. Apparently there were a lot of older authors that viewed the young crowd as dim witted and lazy. The fact some customers told her that excitedly meant they didn't view her that way, despite being one of the biggest perpetrators of both. It seemed like she was breaking ground with the offer of a trip though, which honestly fit what she wanted to do anyways. France and Paris were cool and all that, but it wasn't like Evy was living there and would be able to give a tour during a visit. And she doubted Beauxbatons would let her in. Security in all the schools had to be mega tough nowadays. "We can brainstorm while you're home and figure something out before you graduate. There's plenty of time still," she offered. That would be a good excuse for one on one time too. Forcing it like she was right now and holding out a vacation like a dog treat wouldn't work each time Mina wanted to talk to her. Baiting like that grew old quick. Titania knew. The dog had learned Mina's methods extremely fast, and that was why she was such a stubborn bitch now. Adorable, but stubborn. Mina didn't actually know where their mum was, and shrugged, hands moving from her dog's face to behind her ears. Anything that kept Sarah from honing in on her would do. If Callisto or their parents had been here, they could have distracted her. Now it felt like she was going to be competing with Sarah for Evy's attention. Maybe Titania's too. While you were out building other worlds where was I? The idea of some kind of trip or vacation was exciting. They’d never really had a family vacation. Five children were a lot to deal with, especially with a nine-year age gap between the oldest and youngest child. It made the chaos of Hogwarts dorms an easy adjustment. She remembered seeing other girls that clearly were only children acting wary in such a new environment. Shared space was a foreign concept to some. Evelyn wondered if her older siblings were taking her more seriously now that she was eighteen and about to graduate. She wasn’t the runt of the litter anymore, trying to get their attention by grabbing the ends of their shirts.
”What about going somewhere you’ve been?” Mina had traveled after she had graduated, and Evy didn’t recall seeing her that often or hearing from her when she was in her third through fifth years, maybe. ”Where did you go?” There hadn’t been many stories shared. Typically Callisto glared at Mina to summarize all that time in a hundred words or less. Callisto, while causing the least amount of trouble in the family, was also the least subtle. Though maybe she was just determined to push Evy in a bit of a different direction.
Sarah hadn’t seen their father, but she was right. With the full moon, they needed to take their potions and prepare themselves. Evy had overheard bits and pieces of stories that her parents and older siblings kept from her through her many nights sneaking out after bedtime. And the older she got, the more it annoyed her that they’d never see her as anything but the youngest. Greyback had turned Sarah and Dakoda when they were young, but the other girls were spared that fate. ”She went to the store, I think.” Evy still couldn’t recall what her mother had said when she left. ”Mina was telling me how she’s going to take me on a trip after I graduate.” Evy’s eyes beamed a little bit as she explained the missed conversation to Sarah.

December 23, 2026 Evelyn replied that their mother had gone to the store, and Sarah immediately knew that meant that she would be a while. Trying to go shopping two days before Christmas at a time when the shops were probably going to be closing up for the holiday was maybe not the brightest, but Sarah couldn't say that she minded not having to spend extra time with their mother. Entertaining Evy and Mina for however long it might take for either of their parents to come back fortunately no longer felt like babysitting, but Sarah also wasn't sure that she wanted to carry on a conversation. Evelyn's addition that she and Mina had been talking about how Mina was going to take her on a trip once she graduated from school confirmed that.
"That's exciting, Evy," Sarah responded, mustering up whatever enthusiasm she could find, considering that she hadn't even graduated from Hogwarts. (Then again, Evelyn wouldn't be, either, but at least she would be graduating.) She was certainly curious upon hearing that Mina would be taking Evelyn someplace, and she looked over to Mina. "Where are you going, then?" she asked. She wanted to know how much of an absolute nightmare it was going to be for her—or how much she would be able to thank the universe that she wouldn't be on holiday with them.

▲ Fuck. It was just going to be the three of them for a while then. Sarah wouldn't dare cause an issue with Evy there, but it was going to be an awkward hour or two at the very least. Callisto wasn't due until late, maybe not until close to when their parents and Sarah had to leave for the transformation. And hiding in her old room wasn't going to cut it at all either. So much for avoiding the problem at hand. It wouldn't reflect well on her for it either. Moving from the floor to the couch so that she could get more comfortable, the focus was still on her about the trip she'd offered. "Err...well, I started by going to the US," she mumbled out. By going, it had been more of an angsty teenager stomping out of the house and leaving on her own sort of trip. All of her money had been shoved into her bag and off she went. That could have gone towards books to study magizoology like she'd planned, or towards literally anything else. Instead she traveled and blew it all on partying across the Americas. "Most of that time was in New Orleans. Rue joined me for that." And the two of them lived it up there. Some fun adventures had been had, mostly in an inebriated stupor. Obviously not the sort of thing that she'd take her little sister through if she wanted to leave a good impression. "But that's sort of expensive, you know? And I don't want to leave Titania all on her own that whole time." She patted the spot on the couch between her and Evy to try and entice the dog to climb up onto it. Instead she was met with the defiant gaze of her samoyed. Mina stared back at her, narrowing her eyes at the dog. She was not giving treats for laying on a couch. That was ridiculous. While you were out building other worlds where was I? The longer Evy interacted with her sisters, the less she left, like retreating into the corner of the couch with her phone. She grew accustomed to being by herself most of the time. And even though it wasn’t the whole family here, it still felt somewhat normal somehow. Evy would never admit it to Callisto, but she sometimes missed her lectures and unsolicited advice. Not that Evy wanted to be told how to run her life, but it was just that her sister cared enough to say something. At least she’d gotten the chance to see Mina and Sarah throughout the previous school year.
Mina moved to the couch. She hadn’t acknowledged that Sarah had arrived yet. Evy hoped that maybe they could get along for a family holiday for once. But her heart sank a little bit the longer it went on like this. After Dakoda died and she’d eavesdropped on her sisters talking in the dead of night, Evy had also avoided Sarah until they finally spoke. While Evelyn didn’t say she forgave Sarah completely—she had already lost one sibling. ”Right.” It made sense. It was quite a distance to travel, even with magic. ”Maybe another time.” It was something to look forward to. Evy wondered if Quidditch teams ever traveled to the US. She could see if Luna could take her too—depending on where they were with their lives at that point.
Sarah wondered where they planned to go, and so far, all Evy had was “Not New Orleans”. Her gray eyes looked at Sarah. ”Erm—we hadn’t decided yet.” She paused. ”Have you been anywhere interesting, Sarah?” Evy looked back at Titania, who was still desperate for anyone’s attention. She obliged and scratched behind her ear. The other dogs reemerged from the other room, chasing one another and playing. But as they turned the corner to head in the opposite direction of the girls, one of the dogs slid and collided with a bunch of stuff on the wall and some boxes. Evy knew the boxes. Her mom had not been able to completely move Dakoda’s stuff—including the broomstick that had just fallen over. Evy didn’t let her eyes linger too long, not wanting to get caught up in those feelings. She was glad her phone buzzed with a notification just then, but it wasn’t as if none of them would not recognize something that belonged to their late brother.

December 23, 2026 Evelyn sounded disappointed that Mina wouldn't be taking her to New Orleans because of the cost and her not wanting to leave Titania alone for that length of time. If Callisto or their parents could be trusted to watch Sebastian, though, they could definitely be trusted to watch a spoiled ball of fluff. There were better places to go than New Orleans, Sarah felt, though France was probably off the list of possibilities now.
Ignoring Mina and Titania as much as she could was made easier when Evelyn asked Sarah if she had been anywhere interesting. Working for Interpol, she hadn't gotten to go on as many adventures as might have been assumed, but even she had stories that Mina couldn't top. "Oh, yeah," she grinned sort of mischievously, glad for the opportunity to one-up Mina. "Did I ever tell you that I went to Yrisle?" It wasn't classified information or anything; the Prophet had had it splashed across the front page for ages. It had been almost a year since, but that didn't mean that the story wouldn't be fresh. "Twice?"
