▲ December 27th, 2026 This was so stupid and out of the blue, but Charlie couldn't take it anymore. See, she had a bit of a problem where she held herself back from being forward with those she was interested in until it was too late. Maybe it was because she spent too much time playing every single scenario and outcome in her head first, enjoying the daydream more than whatever reality could possibly provide. Or it was because she actually didn't know how to go about stuff like this. Stuff like this included finding Jimmie Blishwick after traveling back to London for a day and a half to tell her that she couldn't stop thinking about her for the past six months. It was bad. Her classes weren't suffering, per se, but they had definitely taken a half letter hit. This had happened before with another person she'd been interested in, and knew better than to wait forever to say something. Because she lost out last time. Her plan wasn't smart at all. Under the pretense of wanting to see Monday for a little extra time during the holidays (and why wouldn't she?), Charlie was back in London and roaming the shops of Diagon and Horizont Alley. Hoping to casually 'bump' into Jimmie of course. Merlin it was so stupid, but she didn't care. In the worst case scenario, which was the most likely outcome, she didn't find her and ended up doing some shopping. Then by the evening she could go back to the condo and hang out with her sister before returning to LA tomorrow. A break from the family before school started up again was absolutely necessary anyways. She hated playing twenty questions about school and life every single day with her parents, especially about what she was going to be doing after graduation. Her escape was a well deserved present to herself for keeping it bottled up all Christmas break so far. After wandering past Blishwick Matchmaking Services three separate times and stopping to get Spellbucks coffee at the Pi Patisserie, Charlie finally decided to go into the matchmaking services storefront and ask Jimbo Blishwick himself if his daughter was around. Charlie had seen him before at the pizza parlor he opened in Hogsmeade and he seemed like the cool, go with the flow sort. That didn't keep her from being nervous as all get out when she stepped inside and asked him if Jimmie was there. Of course she wasn't. She had work at the Daily Prophet. Charlie immediately felt like a huge idiot, having forgotten that the Blishwick girl had graduated and started working already. Why were her crushes always ahead of her like that? Mumbling out her thanks to Jimbo Blishwick, she left the office and braced herself for the cold alleyway again. This sucked. Now what would she do the rest of the day? MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Sometimes the silence GUIDES A MIND Evy felt like she had disconnected from time. Her parents had not said a word about their argument, but there was something in each of their eyes—but Evy couldn’t quite place what she was seeing. Unfortunately, her break from school was still not over, and she almost wished it was so she could find a reason not to be home. Luna was with her family and then had to go straight back to Quidditch. Nate was working as he always was. Sarah and Callisto had to head back to work, so Evy dropped by London to visit Mina.
The bookstore hadn’t been terribly busy, but Evy wandered around as if she was a curious customer for a while. But even Mina had to get back to work. Evy walked out of Pi Patisserie as she quickly finished the pastry in her hand. Honestly, she’d drop by more often if there wasn’t always a line during school breaks. And a newer shop also had a line out the door, but Evy hadn’t grown accustomed to drinking coffee. Apparently, that shop had been there since late summer, but she wouldn’t know all the way in France. Her thoughts always turned bitter at being so disconnected from her home.
Her last stop was actually going to be The Daily Prophet. Applications for internships began in late winter, but the thought brought her stomach into knots, so she’d been avoiding it. But Evy had visited many shops short of just completing the tour of Knockturn Alley, so it was probably about time to go get that application and then head home. She walked past the shops and had almost passed Blishwick Matchmaking Services when a moping figure slowly walked out. If that girl hadn’t been in Evy’s classes for the past two years, she would have not recognized her. ”No luck on the matchmaking circuit, Weekly?” What else was Evy supposed to think of seeing someone walk out of this place looking so despondent?

▲ Charlie felt like she was doing something wrong when she really wasn’t. Going into Blishwick Matchmaking with the intention of asking out Jimmie Blishwick certainly fit the bill for the romance department, though probably not what the big man was used to. Or maybe he was used to it. She had no idea if Jimmie had suitors regularly popping by. The Blishwick name came with money and two very popular businesses now. There were probably droves of similarly inclined people trying to climb the ladder. Charlie also forgot in that moment that she was basically the same, a child of a magical entrepreneur and famous actress. If anything, maybe she was at the top? Either way, she was going to fret over it for the remainder of her time in London and all the way through the rest of the spring term at school. Such a blunder like this was not like her, yet totally like her at the same time. Usually she planned it out a lot better, like writing a letter to leave just in case this exact scenario happened, or sent an owl ahead of time to try and catch the girl on her lunch break. Foolishly flying over for a chance encounter was just that: foolish. While she attempted to cross the street in front of the matchmaking business, she heard someone start to talk to her, asking if she had any luck inside Blishwick’s. Turning, she recognized that it was coming from Evy, a Slytherin in the same year as her that apparently had decided to go to a school other than Ilvermorny. The run in made Charlie blink a few times because she hadn’t expected to see a former classmate, despite it being totally possible considering where she was (and during the holidays too). “Oh uhh…why would you say that?” she quickly defended herself. Merlin, hopefully she didn’t look how she felt! “I was just visiting and decided to say hi to Jimbo?” Charlie added nervously, the way it came out making it sound as made up as it was. “I don’t really need Blishwick to, y’know…” Except that she really wanted one specific Blishwick, so maybe that was entirely moot… MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Sometimes the silence GUIDES A MIND She seemed surprised by Evy, but by the look on her face, Evy supposed that anyone speaking to her at this point would have gotten the same effect. When Charlie asked why she would ask such a thing, Evy raised her eyebrows as if to ask, ‘really?’ Then her eyes darted to the sign behind her before landing on Charlie. With a curious expression, Evy wondered what this girl was up to. Not that she particularly cared, but she also had nothing better to do at that moment. As Weekly explained that she was simply dropping by to say hi to Jimbo, Evy ate some of her pastry. ”Right…”
It was an unconvincing response. And they seemed a little young to already require such services. ”There’s no shame in it, Weekly.” Evy added. Merlin, she was going to avoid heading to The Daily Prophet for as long as possible, wasn’t she? The thought made her heart beat uncomfortably faster. So yes, she would avoid that trek for as long as possible. Besides, she had nothing better to do. Though back on the topic of matchmaking, Evy still didn’t quite believe it. While the girl was a little odd, she was also very pretty. Surely, she didn’t have a problem getting that kind of attention. ”I won't tell anyone.” She gave an encouraging grin. Who would she tell anyway? Her friends had all moved on with their lives, she thought bitterly.

▲ The totally unconvincing lie had fallen flat. Charlie stood still, gears frantically turning in her head to try and figure out what her best escape from this was now. Because Evy here believed she wanted Jimbo's services. To be fair, supposedly they were top notch and had yet to fail. The only issue with that was she preferred giving it a go on her own. Needing an official matchmaker felt more like it was necessary when she was practically an old maid or whatever. And that was all assuming she even wanted something like marriage in her life. There wasn't anything wrong with not needing it. She had siblings to live vicariously through that, assuming they'd go that route someday. All in all, Charlie felt like she was too young to get hitched, in whichever form that would be, and using Jimbo Blishwick's services outside of the dating app he supposedly had made wasn't really her thing. She was also a terrible liar. "I'm not saying there is," she defended for absolutely no reason. "Seriously, I just wanted to say hello to him." Great. Now she was doubling down and sounded frantic about it. "I-" Merlin, was it easier to just say what she was really here for? There was nothing embarrassing about wanting to talk to Jimmie. It wasn't like anyone knew what she was feeling, unless Evy was secretly an empath. Charlie folded under her own pressure immediately. "I was actually trying to see if Jimmie was around..." she admitted quietly. It was so stupid because she knew the girl would be at work and still tried this anyway. And now admitting it to Evy who made her cave without even batting an eye. "But I guess she's at work, so yeah."MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Sometimes the silence GUIDES A MIND The girl looked frozen, which, while fitting for the current weather, was just odd to see in public. Evy had nowhere to be, and everybody seemed busy, so she had time. One of the shared traits of the Oliveira girls was their expressions. Firstmost, there was no hiding what any of them were thinking. Though perhaps Sarah and Callisto had the better poker faces. Evy could if she tried hard enough, but she preferred people to know she was judging them. So she waited intently, looking at Charlie. It didn’t matter to Evy if the girl was using the services. It was more she was behaving strangely.
And then Weekly gave in, but her answer surprised Evy. Waiting a moment to respond, Evy was about ninety percent sure she’d heard correctly. ”Jimmie?” But why? Evy paused again. Well, this took a turn. ”She works at The Prophet.” Evy finally added. An intern, of course, but surely walking around as if she’d already been appointed the Editor. Evy paused once more. She was feeling a little benevolent today. ”Well, it's your lucky day Weekly.” Her tone was sweet but in that not-so-sweet way. ”I was heading to The Prophet today. You can come along but try not to look so much like a lost puppy.”

▲ Charlie nervously tugged at the sleeves of her jacket as she quickly contemplated whether or not going all the way to the Daily Prophet building was worth it. Because there was sure to be more questions from Oliveira while they walked, about how well she knew Jimmie and why she wanted to see her. And after caving the way she just had...it was definitely going to be an interesting walk. "Yeah...Jimmie," she admitted. Why in Merlin's good name was that embarrassing to her? Every time this happened previously with other small crushes, it always ended up the same way: endless pining that was borderline obsessive. Like, who went across an ocean (magic or not) with the off chance of maybe seeing the person you wanted to talk to. She eyed Evy a little longer before nodding her head. "I've got the time, I guess." Even a glimpse of Jimmie would be good enough probably. Make her entire Christmas break. Speaking of, "Did you have a good Christmas?" she asked her former classmate. One part of her was curious about why she was being helped, the other part hoping to distract the other girl enough that she wouldn't ask any further questions about the need to find Blishwick. "I wanted to stay with my sister for a few days. Monday? Not sure if you remember her. And figured I'd do some walking around while she's at work." Word vomiting was always a useful tool, and she felt like she was often times good at it when the situation called for it. Not to mention how useful it was when constantly trying to vie for attention in her family. Even with only a few of them, her parents were always so distant and more concerned about their own plans. Talking fast and loud was sometimes the only way to get in her thoughts on something before it was back to drinking green juice and playing dress-up. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Sometimes the silence GUIDES A MIND Merlin help Evy if she ever looked that lost and pitiful. Perhaps that was one side effect of so many older siblings, with the majority being sisters. Callisto was always the first to kick you for wavering in anything. Then again, Evy did get away with more, but only because their mother was hardly sober enough to notice. Evy had even wondered if she could sneak someone into her room and have her mom think it was some wine-induced lucid dream. She made a mental note of that for later. She’d run that by Mina to get her thoughts…maybe. Evy didn’t really want Mina or anyone asking who or want their opinion.
Evy raised an eyebrow. Weekly looked like she was ready to camp out and wait for the girl, so of course, she had the time. They went on their way with Charlie first breaking the new silence, but it caught Evy off guard. Immediately it all rushed back into her mind. Talking to Mina and Sarah, bumping into Callisto, and overhearing what their mother admitted. She hadn’t processed it yet, still. It was just a thing to stick on the shelf to collect dust for now. ”Something like that.” Evy answered. She wouldn’t dig into this topic with Weekly when she hadn’t even told her best friend. ”Yours?” She supposed it was polite to ask in return.
She nodded, making a noise to acknowledge she knew who Monday was. They were all around the same year, after all. It was typical to know your housemates and those around your year regardless if you spoke more than five words to them throughout your entire education. Another few seconds of awkward silence passed. Evy spoke this time. ”Where did she end up working?” It was hard to track who went where. She often heard from Luna or Nate about mutual acquaintances, although Evy generally didn’t care about her future career. If her application was successful, it meant working in proximity to Jimmie again. Hopefully, the internship was worth it.

▲ Charlie still wasn’t sure, even after spending a few Christmas seasons in London, if it was appropriate to ask in the same manner that one did about the holidays back home. Maybe it was just the way Evy was. Maybe it was her way of accidentally asking intrusively about things that she had no business knowing. It wasn’t like the two of them were more than acquaintances. She honestly had no idea. But Evy turned it around and asked her about her own holidays regardless. “Alright, I suppose. Suffocating would be the best word for it.” After a few silent steps, she continued, “Best part was seeing Alfredo…he’s my python. Neither school has let me bring him, so yeah…” There was a joke somewhere in there about her mom had more of a stranglehold (or the apparent belief that she did) on her life than the python physically ever did. Alfredo did like cuddles though… “Witch TV. I think she’s technically still an intern. They’re always trying to hire young people. Something about ‘understanding the changing media landscape’.” Charlie wasn’t stupid. She knew exactly what that slogan meant. Witch TV was probably hoping to get a leg up on the industry before anyone else figured out how to do it like the no-maj. So far it seemed to be working. For a very brief moment, Charlie had contemplated interning there as well once she was graduated. It wasn’t what she wanted to do of course, but it was a job and to work with animals had so many regulations and training programs that had to be passed in order to actually do it. “You ended up going to Beauxbatons, right?” Charlie added, as if it was almost an afterthought. Things were so much easier for her. Two years displaced at Hogwarts and then back to Ilvermorny like it never happened. And in a few short months, it would all be done and over with. Sometimes the silence GUIDES A MIND Evy made a slight expression when Charlie mentioned ‘suffocating’. That was a familiar feeling and the curse of having been born last. But Evy couldn’t help but almost turn her head entirely to look at Charlie when she mentioned a python. Why in Merlin’s name would anyone want a pet python? ”A python?” The intrusive thought won out, and the question escaped her mouth before she could stop herself. Somehow, this still was not the strangest conversation Evy ever had…somehow. But they continued on their way through the holiday crowds.
Evy had considered Witch TV, with her writing and all, but then a spree of new ridiculous reality shows emerged. Merlin knew they melted your brain and were a great way to pass hours in a day, but Evy wanted more for her writing. The idea of being an intern made Evy reluctant to apply anywhere for her future career. She hated being at the bottom of the ladder all the time. ”I didn’t realize fetching coffee was ‘changing the media landscape’” It wasn’t a secret what intern work required. It weeded out the weak to give opportunities to those who lasted.
”Unfortunately.” Evy responded flatly. She supposed the only advantage was remaining relatively close to home. Ilvermorny required a portkey. It was so far. As much as she hated going home, Evy couldn’t stand waiting months to see her sisters or young nephew. ”Some of us tried to see how long we could continue in our Hogwarts uniforms before they forced us to change.” Some was a rather large word for all of two of them. But bonding with Nessa meant Evy didn’t have to suffer this last year alone.

▲ ”Yeah, a python,” Charlie repeated herself. Was it really that hard to believe? She didn’t mean to sound perturbed by Evy, but she certainly was. ”Snakes are cool. All animals are, but I have a soft spot for them especially.” And lizards, dogs, rats, and especially dragons. As much as she wanted to one day own a dragon, that was highly illegal and would never happen. She could definitely have the rest though. Charlie had to hold her tongue at Evy’s comment about Monday. She was the only sibling she had left over here and felt rather protective over that fact. ”I mean, it’s a start.” Between this and the python comment, she was starting to get slightly more worked up over this encounter. Especially after failing to find Jimmie. With such a short amount of time available to her, the desperation and despair was starting to kick in. ”Especially since there really isn’t anything Ilvermorny or Hogwarts offered that could lead right into it.” At least with magical creature related careers, there were classes for that. Breaking into a brand new sector of magic related technology was actually sort of cool. She was proud of Monday for that, even if she was only ‘fetching coffee’ right now. ”Really?” she asked, surprised about the want to wear the Hogwarts uniforms over Beauxbatons. ”I’ve always liked theirs though…were they strict about how they were supposed to be worn?” The silver-lining of Ilvermorny and Hogwarts uniforms was that they tended to be more relaxed and students were allowed to wear them however they pleased, as long as they were relatively in line. ”Anyways…it’s too bad everyone couldn’t have just gone to Ilvermorny. It would have made sense after Hogwarts took almost all of us in when we needed it.” Not all of her former classmates had made the trip, with some families opting to send their children elsewhere over Hogwarts, but it was the vast majority of them at the end of the day. Sometimes the silence GUIDES A MIND Evy nodded wordlessly. Magical pets had never been her cup of tea, so to speak. Their family always had dogs, and that seemed messy enough, as it were. Plus, nobody in the family ever garnered any particular interest in Care of Magical Creatures outside of what anyone needed to know about werewolves. Evy knew enough, considering her parents, older brother, and sister were all afflicted. ”I suppose you’re right.” Evy responded, her tone a bit flat. What did she know about all that? The Prophet seemed to suit Evy better as she thought about her future. Somewhere to put her writing to good use and keep her busy.
”That’s true.” Evy agreed. The only opportunity Evy had to write was the school paper. Not that she’d ever admit to Jimmie that being drafted into the role had been very positive. The last thing she needed was that smug Blishwick smile in her face. ”Beauxbatons doesn’t have anything either.” Not even a school paper for Evy to focus on, not that they would invite Hogwarts students to help staff such a thing.
”I mean, they look nice, but the fabric is weird.” Plus, Evy was still angry at being sent to the school. She almost would have rather been sent across the ocean to America. She shrugged. ”The other students didn’t like us there either.” There had been a similar sentiment when the American students came to Hogwarts, but it had all faded quickly. This was not the case for Hogwarts students arriving in France. ”Yeah, I think I agree with you…” Over the few short years, the students had integrated well, so Charlie’s point was one that Evy could easily agree with.
In the distance, Evy spotted their destination. The large gray plaque’s golden words glinted in the sunlight. ”We’re almost there.” Evy announced. ”Just let me do the talking.” Letting Evy do the talking was definitely best and she was not a stranger to Jimmie if they needed to pass along a name. Then again, perhaps they would offer some short tour or at least take them through the main offices.
