gehry benjamin ollivander
WAND 7 inches, chestnut, unicorn hair, springy
APPEARANCE 6'0" Naturally scrawny build but has put on a little but of muscle the past couple of years. His hair style changes based on what he feels like. At one point he had really long hair but finally got fed up with it and cut it short again. And that was the last of the long hair phase. Unfortunately his beard doesn’t fully grow in, but he sometimes lets it grow out whenever he’s reminded of his baby face. Benny is the tallest of his siblings, even surpassing his older brother. | pronunciation literally like gary nickname ben benny gary age & birthday 23 03 jan 2004 gender & pronouns male he/him blood status half-blood sexuality bisexual face claim brenton thwaites | |||||||||||||||||
PERSONALITY Benny, the youngest Ollivander, looks about as harmless as a pygmy puff and is as easily distracted as a niffler in a jewelry store. Truthfully, he really is that harmless and in stark contrast to the headstrong natures of both of his older sisters. While his parents finally got the magical son and heir they’d hoped for, the pressure didn’t land on him. Sure, they doted on their youngest son—one might even call him spoiled, but the reins of the shop were securely in his sister’s hands. Living such a comfortable life influenced Benny as he got older. As a young boy, he could never really understand why his brother didn’t always want to play with him. It hadn’t occurred to an eight-year-old how strange it was that Nell was at Hogwarts and Frankie was at home. Or he’d make the mistake of asking Frankie a question about what his wand was as Benny was learning about them every day at home. How does one explain such family issues and dynamics to a seven-year-old? But it didn’t matter. Frankie left when Benny was almost ten, and he didn’t see him again until after he was twenty-two. Benny cares for his family, so the man that came back home felt like a stranger. He still felt that familial kinship with him since Frankie had never been cruel to him as perhaps his sister and parents had been to Frankie. But Benny doesn’t get in the middle of those things. You will never find him gallantly facing a bully or tripping others to be first in his class. The boy was simply…average, and he was content with that. It was frustrating for his Professors who had taught his older sisters. Both of them received a great many OWLs and NEWTs during their time, while Benny preferred to ditch class on a lovely spring day. And it frustrated them more when they did see those few moments Benny showed his natural talent for Charms, Potions, and a little bit of non-verbal magic. When he finally arrived at Hogwarts and was sorted, somewhat surprisingly, in Hufflepuff, it was easy to see why quickly. Benny is very friendly and likable and smiles all the time. He is happy to go with the flow of things and doesn’t have a particular need to plan every detail or achieve any sort of perfection. One might say that deep down, Benny knows that attempting any kind of perfection is a fast road to failure and disappointment. Things hurt less when there are no expectations. Like the second son that is never supposed to be King, the spare to the heir—though the heir was cast aside in this case. And by luck, Veronica was ready to step into that place. His preference to prop his feet up and take a nap wasn’t very fitting with what some might call “Hufflepuff values” but if Benny was interested in something, he would most definitely put more energy toward that, thought that changed often. Benny might not be looking to do anything worthy of an Order of Merlin, but he’s patiently biding his time for whatever is next. Gehry Benjamin Ollivander was expected on Christmas Day but arrived after the New Year. Garth and Clara were elated to finally have another boy. It probably explained the age gap between the siblings. Veronica was thirteen when the youngest was born. He quickly began to go by ‘Benny’ since the other kids in primary school struggled with his first name because the spelling didn’t match their expected pronunciation. The only ones that would call him by his first name were typically his family, though mostly his parents. With Nell and Frankie four and eight years older than him, respectively. He was typically found following one or the other around in whatever they were doing. And as he got older, he began to learn about wands, and his father would give him scraps of wood to practice very easy tasks on. But Benny grew bored quickly of things like that. Verbal instructions to clean his room or put his shoes away went in one ear and out the other. But when Benny would listen to the radio or listen to someone explain something interesting to him, he more than likely could recite those facts verbatim. Benny didn’t always mean to cause mischief, but since he was always tall, even as a boy, Nell would grab him and get him to help her up on a shelf they couldn’t reach in the shop. At least until their father would find them in a pile of fallen wand boxes. Frankie never joined them, but Benny still followed his brother around because he liked being around his siblings. But they grew older, and when Benny was seven, Nell received her Hogwarts letter. Of course, their parents were thrilled, though there hadn’t been a doubt about their two youngest. And then attention shifted back to Veronica and her own baby boy, Gideon. Benny always thought it was strange he became an uncle at seven, but he was still far too young to play with. And then it was just Benny and Frankie at home since Nell was off at school. While Benny walked around with very little sense of ‘stranger danger’, Frankie was a lot quieter, and Benny could always find him whittling away at some new project. They all seemed to have that hobby, but Frankie’s creations were far more detailed than anything Benny ever attempted. His brother was never unkind to him, though he would shy away whenever his mother praised whatever little project Benny had worked on while his brother’s had been actually far better. Benny didn’t think about the little details and memories until he was much older and in a different place to understand a little bit of what had happened during those younger years. In the meantime, Veronica and their father would teach Benny about wands though his father never pushed him as hard as his siblings. And then, in the year after Benny turned eleven, his Hogwarts Letter arrived. However, Frankie left soon after without much of a word. Benny was sorted into Hufflepuff, though the Sorting Hat did have a leaning toward Ravenclaw. But he was nothing like his older sisters academically—or rather in ambition, one might say. He was happy to receive average marks, even in the classes he enjoyed, like Charms. Even after a Professor would express disappointment that he wasn’t applying himself, Benny hardly felt any shame or anything about it really. His summers home were spent lounging or with his friends sometimes, he would help at the shop, but he learned very quickly not to get in the middle of Veronica and Nell. Nell was now apprenticing at the shop where they used to climb the shelves as kids. But while Benny might get praise for sweeping the floor, he watched Nell work meticulously and with long hours for less of the same praise. The remainder of his school years were normal. He made many friends in his year and all with different personality quirks that complimented one another. And he was very excited when his nephew joined him at Hogwarts during his final year, though he wished they could have had more overlapping years. By the time Benny graduated, you only needed a hand and a half to count all the OWLs and NEWTs he earned—not that it phased his parents. And really, out of boredom, he took a job at Flourish and Botts because he loved to read. At eighteen and a new adult in the world, it was now that he’d hear a whisper or two from people in the shop or walking by. An Ollivander not making wands? Why doesn’t he apprentice like his sister? It was…odd. Nobody had ever said that to him before, or at least not directly. But by this point, Benny was used to conversations with Professors on the topic. So he didn’t say much about it or respond. Working at the bookstore was fine for the moment. Still, he would get bored from time to time. Every once in a while, he stops by the family shop to visit his sisters and help sweep up to pass the time. And he even began helping sparingly at Eeylop’s Owl Emporium because he likes the owls. Anything that interested him and to pass the time. And fortunately, the bookstore hired more employees so he could sneak the occasional nap in the backroom. But one day, things started happening. While Benny was working at the bookstore, he walked by a newsstand in Diagon Alley and saw the headlines about what was occurring at the school. It was horrifying to hear about, but hopefully, that was the last of it. Benny was familiar with recent history and how his great-great-grandfather had been kidnapped. And things settled with the Triwizard Tournament the following year. It brought more business to Diagon Alley. Which only disappointed Benny as he couldn’t nap as often as he’d like. But again—tragedy struck. But he was also distracted by the news of his sister’s divorce. But also at the same time, Frankie came back home. It was hard to say if his brother was different. The last time Benny had seen him was when he was ten and before he went to Hogwarts. He felt a bit awkward for a natural extrovert, especially because he was much taller than Frankie and didn’t physically look up at him anymore. But everyone continued on as normally as they could. The following year Nell left the family shop and opened her own. It caused quite a stir at home, but Benny couldn’t see why there couldn’t be two shops. Then again, all that detail of family legacy hadn’t been drilled into Benny the same way it had for his other siblings. Besides, Benny knew about other wand cores but had never asked Veronica about them. He just read about them. And one day, Hogwarts was on the front page of the Prophet again, but now Hogwarts was gone. It made him sad, he had a lot of wonderful memories at the school, and Gideon had fortunately made it out in one piece. Though by the traffic Ollivander’s was receiving, some were affected more than others. But Benny hasn’t had a chance to talk to Gideon much about it as he decided to attend school in the United States, so far away from the other schools he could have attended in Europe. Benny is still working at the bookstore, reading and napping away when he isn’t saying hello to the Owls at the Emporium or sneaking a joint with a bubble-head charm. His free time is spent with friends or with one of his siblings, and he’s content with it all. OOC
