July 2027
Rob glared at his reflection in the mirror that hung above the sink in the bathroom. Lyra had insisted on him wearing a smart jacket for the bar they were going to tonight. He had first laughed in her face, but then when he realised she was serious, he only gawped at her. He knew Lyra had come into some money with her duelling, but he hadn't expected her to be keen on glamour. The pair of them were riff raff - wolves in the night. They had a primal connection that no make up or fancy clothes could hide.
Shifting uncomfortably, Rob scrubbed the back of his neck with a towel. Sweat was already beading at his hairline - the heat of London summer was nearly suffocating. Sighing heavily, Rob resigned to the outfit and slunk out of the bathroom. Making straight for the kitchen, Rob poured two drinks for himself and Lyra. Wherever this place they were going was, it seemed expensive. It probably would be, if he'd had to dress up as such.
"You curl your hair anymore and it's going to crisp off," called Rob to Lyra, who was dutifully pampering herself for their night out. Rob sipped at his drink thoughtfully, letting the alcohol flush the sweat out of his body and settle him into a more comfortable place. He leaned against the counter, tipping his head back. The windows were thrown open to tempt any sort of a breeze into the stuffy flat. They'd decided not to upgrade, despite their dual incomes. Rob was increasingly fond of the place - and for Lyra, it was the first real home she'd had in a long while.

It was something had Lyra once dreamt of when she was a lot little; owning her own business. However it had burned away with the remnants of the dream of any sort of 'normal' life after Hogwarts when she had been bitten. When her and Hanna had looked into it originally it seemed impossible after that drunken night of cocktails so many months ago, and yet now, with some guidance from people in the industry it seemed to actually be coming to fruition. There was only one more hurdle to overcome; getting Rob on board with the plan. When she had suggested spending date night at the fancy cocktail bar, Rob had been less than impressed. They weren't exactly their usual clientele; but then again they didn't scrub up terrible. As she wrapped her hair around her wand, piece by piece, she was quiet. She'd been squirrelly most of the day, but had been able to avoid Rob and hide it as he'd been at work on some press release to brief awarewolf to the Australian market. She'd been lost in thought as she concentrated on fixing her hair and setting her curls just right, but when Rob addressed her directly it pulled her out of her stupor "Wha- oh...right yeah" she gave him a half-hearted smile as he hair slid off the wand. She saw the drink Rob had poured for her, and scrunched her nose up. She couldn't start too early if she was going to argue with any form of logic with Rob to win im over. Instead, she finished slicking some nude lipstick over her lips and wandered over to where he was leaning on the counter. "Ready to make a move?" something in her body was tense. Giving him a small smile, she prayed it wasn't enough for Rob to put his finger on. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Draining his drink, Rob fixed Lyra with a questioning stare. She seemed out of sorts. He sauntered up to her, crooking a finger under her chin so that she would meet his eyes. "Chin up, love. We'll be together. No matter how the place is," he said in a soft voice, kissing her tenderly before parting. He quirked a brow at her seemingly adverse reaction to the drink he'd poured her and narrowed his eyes. They were a young couple in love, living in the heart of Clapham. It wasn't uncommon to find the pair roving around the streets at night, clutching at each other laughing after too many pints on Northcote Road. However, Rob held his tongue this time as Lyra asked if he was ready.
Knocking back Lyra's drink for good measure, Rob slid an arm around his mates slim torso. He frowned down at her, feeling the tension rising off her like steam. "You alright? You seem worried about something," said Rob. It wasn't just the set of her posture, but something deeper in his bones warned him that Lyra wasn't feeling her best. His mind flicked through the options - maybe she'd gone back to illegal duelling and hadn't told him? Rob would be upset of course, but not unreasonable. Or maybe her twin had gotten back in contact with her and wanted her to move across the world, separating mate from mate in an unthinkable manner?
The third option stole Rob's breath away. Was she... expecting? Is that why she wouldn't drink? Lyra had shared with Rob her concerns about conceiving wolf pups but still... was it too soon? Did she want to keep it? Merlin, that must be why they were getting so dressed up! Sweat slicked Rob's palms and he opened his mouth to ask Lyra to confirm or deny his theory when they apparated away to their destination.
The pair popped back into existence in a swanky lobby, complete with dazzling chandeliers and sparkling white marble floors. There was a lift in front of them and though the room was rather small, it offered a sweeping view of the riverside. "Lyra?" was all Rob could manage, glancing over at her in confusion.

As she let Rob's comforting form take over and wrap himself around her, her smile became slightly more genuine and less forced. Part of her was able to relax a little bit more as she felt herself melt in his arms. With a tilt of her head back to meet his gaze, the corners of her mouth tugged up just slightly. "It's nothing. Really. We can talk about it later.." It was far from nothing. It was actually a rather large business venture, but still, she tried to keep her tone soft and airy as she let her face lean into hers to silence him with a kiss. It wasn't long before Rob took the lead and whisked them away. The lobby they reappeared in was a simple one; designed as just a landing platform moreso. The actual bar was protected with wards and you weren't able to apparate directly there. Instead you had to land here and check in, ensuring you did in fact have a reservation before being allowed to continue on to the floor above where the actual rooftop platform of the Shard where the cocktail bar was. With an attempt at a reassuring smile, she stepped back from her mate and instead reached for his hand to pull him towards the fussy bugger at the desk. Give anyone a clipboard and a reservation book and they become mad with power; but this worker had it on a whole other level. The first time she had come here alone, she had gotten some guff from him, but after she had eventually been let in and proven that she did in fact have the Galleons and status to spend an evening here he had softened. Even moreso when she had come back some more. The older man employed by the bar actually had quite a soft spot for her now, even keeping up with her latest matches as a bit of a fan, but he'd never admit that to her face. All the same, once he spotted Lyra & Rob he gave her a warm smile. "Ah MISS Horvath, I see you've finally brought your....friend you've been telling me about. Right this way" He didn't entirely hide his distaste for Rob, or the fact he was her Mate, but the smile and way he gestured them forward past the people waiting in line partially made up for it. Lyra didn't say anything, she wasn't quite sure what to say. Instead she gave Rob another sheepish smile and began to pull him toward the waiting lift. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Rob narrowed his eyes at Lyra, but let the subject lay for the moment. They disapparated to the destination Lyra had directed them to. It was quite a posh looking place, all sleek lines and angles. They approached the front desk and Lyra was greeted like an old friend. Rob spared her a glance, his brows knitting together in confusion. Lyra had most certainly been keeping secrets from him, frequenting places he hadn't expected. Perhaps the influx of money had changed her more than Rob had thought.
"Friend?" he muttered to Lyra as they were shuffled into the waiting lift. "Lyra, what the hell is going on?" he asked as the doors swept shut and they were delivered to a higher ground. With a ding, the pair were spit out into a sort of wonderland. Glass surrounded them on every side, and well dressed patrons were being served by black clad waiters. Smooth music played from everywhere and nowhere at once, and trays floated around in mid-air delivered drinks. Rob looked around, trying to take everything at once. "Why have you brought me here? Do you have something serious to tell me?" Rob's patience was wearing thing - he didn't feel comfortable in this place, surrounded by people who would happily shun him for just being a werewolf. Despite the fact that he was part of the creative team around Aware Wolf.
A growl built in his throat as he appraised Lyra. She was hiding something. "Tell me. Please" Rob added, trying hard to keep the irritation from his tone.

Lyra tensed as Rob spat the word back at her and her own brows knit together. "His words. Not mine." Dropping it just like that, she pulled him forward towards the rooftop bar and hoped his aggravation would melt away soon. Making her way through the classy cocktail bar, she flashed demure smiles to the staff they passed. It was difficult to try and ease her mate as they walked. Though the mood he seemed to be in, she wasn't sure if she was fighting a losing battle or not. She wasn't trying to be mysterious but as they moved past the booths and out onto the terrace, the view of the sparkling city below them gave her pause just enough to feel somewhat more serene. The glowing sphere of light that hovered over each table were what lit the way and seemed to lead them right to what had become her favourite table; a small nook for two right at the edge of the patio. As she moved to sit down, she found Rob to be growling at her with an irritated impatience she didn't appreciate. "We'll talk about it in a minute." But Rob didn't sit down, she felt his annoyance growing. Shit. Her plan was really taking a nosedive; this was not going the way she had hoped. "Look, just sit down and order a drink first at least please?". Her cheeks flared as she noticed the busy body manager had followed them over and was poised to take a drink order. She didn't need to be embarrassed like this right now. Trying to ease the mood somewhat she lifted the drinks menu and scanned it for a moment; a small leather bound book just about as thick as Rob's mood with her. With lips pursed she dared look back to him for only a split second "They do a good Whiskey sour.." she suggested in a small voice, her eyes pleading with his. EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

The pair drifted through the booths and tinkling laughs of the patrons, and Rob's patience thinned. It wasn't uncommon for Lyra to be mysterious, though they were often able to have unspoken conversations. As mates, they understood one another without need to voice it. But in this case, Rob was completely lost. He had no idea why Lyra had dragged him here, and less of an idea why she fancied expensive drinks. At the suggestion of alcohol, Rob deduced that she was not in fact expecting, and couldn't help but feel a little let down by the revelation. He hadn't thought he was quite ready for parenthood, but the lingering sensation of longing said otherwise.
"We could talk about it now," Rob bit back as Lyra tried to stave him off an explanation. She was being purposefully irritating now - she had to know how much being kept in the dark aggravated him. It had been their undoing before - Rob had hoped that Lyra had learned from their past mistakes, learned to be open and honest with him as he tried to be with her. If anything, her secrecy hurt Rob in that he felt like she couldn't trust him.
They were led to a table and Lyra sat down. Rob followed suit after a few moments, all tension and sharp angles. Lyra picked up the cocktail book and Rob turned to the manager who was hovering near them. "Has Lyra done something to warrant you watching over her like a simpering fool?" asked Rob in a mocking tone. "I'll have a Peroni. Please," he added, painfully aware of how rude he sounded but his irritation couldn't be hidden. Lyra gave him a pleading look but he ignored her. After she placed her own request, Rob aimed a hardened glare at her. "Enough with the secrecy. Ly. What's going on?"

Lyra was near breaking now. She had tried to give Rob a surprise and it was quickly crumbling away. The surprise was badly aimed of course, but still. The fact it had fallen apart just so quickly made her feel like an utter flop. His tone was much too sharp. Lyra was still the old Lyra on the surface; the type that could easily stop a man in their tracks with a look if they dared give her any shit- with the worry she would likely kill him later on then. And yet her mate made her fall to pieces every time. He was the only one it was different with. It was real with. After she ordered a non-alcoholic strawberry spritz (her mood had changed and she was no longer up for letting alcohol dampen it), her chest heaved a sigh. ”Look, it doesn’t matter. This whole thing was a bad idea. This isn’t your thing. It doesn’t matter. Forget it. ” with another quiet sigh, she dropped her gaze again, more defeated her tone was quietened ”We’ll just have these drinks and go home and get a takeaway or something..” She was defeated. That was until Rob then took a swipe at the staff. They didn’t deserve his wrath. The simpering fool as Rob called him, had always been good to Lyra in the past. Even if he was a fussy idiot, Lyra knew he meant well. ”Ep-key” she spat with a growl. Now she had her back up. She only ever called him that when she was irritated with him. Always purposely putting the wrong pronunciation on it, her Slavic accent spitting it out all wrong. Her cheeks were flushed with a mix of anger and embarrassment. This whole idea had gone to shit. Her growl now lower, with an attempt to be more contained and steadied she stared him down; despising the hardened glare he watched her with. She felt sick to her stomach and wanted to just disaparate right out of her seat, fuck the wards. Why was he being like this? After taking another breath to stwsdy bedself, the calming had worked somewhat. ”I said forget about it. Drop it and stop being such a prick to those who don’t deserve it.” her voice now more heavily accented with her Slavic tones as it grew more irritated. Nobody deserved it; she thought for a moment. Even she didn’t deserve the gruffness and hated him for it. She sat for a moment and took a deep breath before eventually uttering to herself in a mumble ”basszus ez hiba volt. Csak haza akarok Menni.emlékeztessen, hogy soha többé ne próbáljak meglepni.”(shit this was a mistake. I just want to go home. Remind me to never try surprise you again)[/i] EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Rob could see that Lyra's excitement was fading, and quickly. He knew he ought to get his discontentment under control, but all he wanted was a simple reply. Was it too much to ask? For honesty and transparency? He hadn't meant to snap at the waiter, but his patience was on a knife's edge. "It could be my thing if you just explained to me. But since you keep refusing it, it's not," he shot back, his brow crumpled.
It didn't escape Rob's notice that in the end, Lyra ordered a non-alcoholic drink. "Are you pregnant?" he blurted out, his curiosity getting the better of him. But when she spat out his name like it was a disgusting bit of liquorice, he felt himself beginning to snap. A growl emanated from deep in his chest as his eyes flashed. When Lyra slagged him off in Hungarian, he couldn't help himself. "Don't you dare insult me in a language you know I can't understand. I don't stoop down to that level and cuss you out in Dutch. And I always translate for you, no matter what is being said," he snapped.
"Look, Lyra. I don't know what's gotten into you. You're being all cagey and shit and it's annoying. I thought we agreed no more secrets and lies?" said Rob, making a very concentrated effort to get a handle on his anger. After a few deep breaths, he managed to calm himself enough to meet Lyra's gaze. "You tell me to dress nicely without telling me where we're going. You bring me to a bar I've never seen or heard of, surrounded by people who probably believe we're better off caged. And then you refuse to tell me why we're doing any of this? I just... I just want to understand," said Rob, drained.

"I just-" she had started to feel she could try and explain, but the fact her had thrown the idea of actual pups at her now had well and utterly thrown her for a loop "What?! No. Of course not!" The suggestion made her feel sick to her stomach for more than one reason. The main on being the fact Rob thought she could actually keep something like that from him- no that would be more impossible to hide. The idea of it still toyed on her heart strings. Sometimes they met up with rhys alexander greyback and saw his half-bred pup and her interest peaked, wondering what if. On other rare times she saw Rob with Edda and it began a longing in her she never knew she had. But still, the fear and other half of what ifs plagued her and quickly extinguished the wishes. She hadn't been ready for Rob to bring that up though, to throw it in her face and spring the idea on her so unceremoniously like this. It brought a fierce red to her cheeks and set her on edge even more as she self consciously crossed her arms on her small chest and looked away from him. Rob's scolding had brought her back down to earth. He was right, and her stubborn arse knew that. She shouldn't curse him out in her native tongue when he didn't know what was being said; it wasn't fair. Even with the tightness to his tone and how he snapped at her she softened and sighed quietly. "You're right. I'm sorry, that was out of line..". She still didn't meet his eye, instead she left her gaze fixed on the table trying to think how to get her out of this mess. The dread settled in her stomach making her feel even more nauseated. Still, she say like a bold child on the naughty step unsure of what to even say to him. His snapping and growling at her made her even more upset and that was evident in her face and the way she held her jaw as she mulled over the words. "It's not secrets and lies." eventually she settled on, her tone quiet and overly cautious as she quickly met his gaze, but just as speedily dropped it away again "I just....I just had a business proposition for you, and the idea of it made me nervous but excited...but I was just too scared to tell you so I wanted to see what you thought of this place first before I said anything..." still looking away, her cheeks seared red, feeling like she could cry out of embarrassment and shame at it all. Rob had tried to keep his temper cool, his head on his shoulders. But the more Lyra hedged, dodged and bobbed, the more frustrated he grew. It was almost like for every step they took forward together, there was something pushing them two steps back. It was utterly exhausting - he longed for a time where he didn't have to prise every bit of information from his mate. Rob hoped he wasn't controlling - that was a trait reserved for Jitske - but living in mystery was getting old. Lyra looked flabbergasted at his accusation, the colour draining from her face. A small piece of him died in that moment, and Rob hadn't realised just how much he wanted it. But they were young. And they had time. Time... if Lyra was honest.
Rob's scowl tempered slightly as Lyra apologised for being out of line. His jaw was clenched, but he nodded slightly, allowing her to continue. She tried to reason with him, tried to tell him that it wasn't secrets and lies. Rob said nothing, only arched a disbelieving brow. How could she say that when she'd been cagey all day? Rob's patience was wearing thin. She met his gaze, then dropped it again, almost like a terrified animal. It hurt Rob to see her this way, and he opened his mouth to apologise at the same time she finally spoke.
A business proposition? Unease settled in the pit of his belly. Lyra was still withholding information, but she'd given him a morsel. "What kind of proposition?" asked Rob, his brow creasing in confusion. But it smoothed as he pieced it together. "You're going to buy this place." It wasn't a question, more a statement of fact. Rob looked away from her, ashamed at his behaviour. How he'd been so sour from their arrival. His own edginess had won out. He glanced across the skyline as the sun slowly sunk below the horizon. The river below them was set ablaze, and London was alight. "It's... got a beautiful view..." said Rob rather awkwardly.

Still an unsightly shade of red, her eyes dipped away from his. She knew she had made him feel bad, but she felt like she could be sick and cry at the same time. Lyra's lips pressed together and she clutched at her thighs now as a way to steady herself. "I just..." she began feebly, before giving and aggrieved sigh. "I wasn't trying be shifty, or I wasn't up to anything. I just didn't know how to ask. I was scared to tell you about my idea in case you didn't like it and got mad at me or something"Casting her gaze out overt the city lights, her voice dropped to a mumble. "Though I guess that happened anyway" Half looking at him for a moment, she gave a small shrug. "I just thought it would be good to be sensible and like invest our Galleons or whatever. We've both got comfortable amounts now from your Awarewolf shares and my Dueling. I thought maybe we could invest in the future..." with a small pause she properly looked at him now, growing slightly more confident, even if her hesitation was still evident in her low tone. "I came here at Christmas with Hanna and felt so out of place, maybe it wasn't but I felt it was because of my scars. Because of what I am maybe, but then I actually grew to like it quite a lot when I found out everyone was nice and liked me so I started coming here more for business meetings and with Hana and stuff. I thought if...people like us wanted somewhere they could feel like that, and not feel looked down on. People like us could be comfortable feeling fancy. Especially if they know two Werewolves own it...." trailing off she grew frustrated, not sure if she was getting her point across and if Rob would hate her for it "Look I don't know. It was probably a dumb idea. Forget I said anything..." her hand twitched up the the table and she swiftly moved to down the end of her overly large cocktail EPKE ROBERTUS OPPEDYK

Rob opened his mouth, then closed it again. Then tried once more, and failed to conjure words. He was utterly flabbergasted by Lyra's behaviour. He wondered what he had done to warrant such hesitancy. Had he not been patient and understanding as of late? He knew that his initial reaction to her underground duelling had been... well, that was in the past. He'd thought they'd grown together. He'd thought they trusted one another. He'd thought a lot of things - and it didn't seem like his thoughts had translated well to reality.
Exhaling sharply, Rob turned his gaze from Lyra as she went on to explain how she thought he would be mad. Emotions swirled inside him, a tempest and a storm. They were supposed to be mates. They were supposed to understand one another without second guessing. Yet that was all Lyra had done in the lead-up to this moment. Rob's mind flashed to Sienna - his best friend and first love who was travelling the world. He was certain that Si wouldn't have acted like this, so afraid and tentative. She'd have been bold and unyielding, telling Rob to accept it or get the fuck out. Rob had thought Lyra was like that as well, but he was seeing the cracks in her now.
Rob only half listened to Lyra's explanation, stewing all the while. As she lapsed into silence, Rob finally returned his attention to her. He was about to reply when she returned to doubting herself again, hand twitching, gaze dropping. "Stop. Stop fucking doubting yourself Lyra," said Rob, frustrating. "It's a good idea - no, a great idea. To make an inclusive space. To find a place where you can be who you are. It didn't come off like that at first, but I made my own assumptions. Why do you think I wouldn't support you? I'm your mate. I'm supposed to be your number one cheerleader, your backer, the person you trust with everything." Rob scrubbed his face, groaning. "I'm upset you didn't feel like you could trust me. That you had to test me with this. Why wouldn't I want what you want? This isn't even illegal!" he exclaimed.

Lyra was still quiet. She’d be doubting herself rather a lot recently. As a child she’d suffered a lot from rejection sensitivity. A soft and sparkly little Hufflepuff who had just wanted to be friends with everyone and be happy. For a time things had been like that. Things had been easily achievable and her friends had flocked around her. Even if things had gone badly, she rebounded easily. It hadn’t meant all that much to her. Things had only changed when she had been bitten. Becoming more withdrawn, her emotions had become more difficult to handle and sort out. It was only when she had come of age and hardened to things that she had essentially shut her emotions off. Bottling them all up had always been easier. Blowing them off in the illegals duels where she earned just enough money to keep her alive, or on binges of certain substances. Even sometimes being raw and animalistic once a month in the Black Forest, but never actually dealing with them. Now life had become almost normal for her, in love and settled in life with Rob things had crept back in. She began to second guess herself the more she slipped into a comfortable life, more scared of getting hurt wherever possible. Over thinking things and blowing things out of proportion. As ridiculous as it was, even though now Rob had admitted it was a great idea she felt like things had gone utterly wrong. His tone and pained expression of face, just made her feel worse. ”I….I don’t know” she began, still full of hesitation. ”I’m sorry. I was just worried you wouldn’t like the idea and you wouldn’t want to give the money and then I, or we couldn’t do it. Or it would start a fight or something. But I had Tony look into it a little and it seems it would be a good investment, good returns. Scope for possibly more actually. A nice retirement plan or something he had said…” with a small smile she eventually looked at him again, the anxiety and upset obvious clear in her gaze he was still annoyed with her, she waited in silence, wondering if he would soften at all. This marked change in Lyra set Rob on edge. It was an unattractive quality, having her second guess herself constantly. Rob exhaled heavily, feeling drained. He knew that Lyra was his mate, and that he would always find his way back to her. But much of their relationship had blossomed because Lyra was just as fiery and decisive as he was. Even her duelling, she proved to him that she could handle herself. This was not the girl he’d seen wiping the floor with men and women twice her age. She was a shadow. A wraith.
Rubbing his temple, Rob cast his gaze downwards. He took another deep breath, trying to explain to Lyra that he thought it was an amazing idea. But she didn’t need his permission. He didn’t understand where the doubt was coming from. ”This is your project, your money to do with as you wish. I think it would be really wise to invest it,” Rob added, finally catching her dark gaze. Disappointment was written clearly on his face, despite his positive words. It felt like something had shifted between them. Rob didn’t want to be painted as a predator, but he felt like Lyra was shrinking away as if she was being hunted.
”Don’t apologise. Don’t be afraid. What is going on, Lyra? You’re not yourself,” said Rob, his tone harsher than he intended. He took a second to collect himself before starting again. ”I think it’s a great idea. I want to support you… but I feel like you’re too afraid to make any sort of move in case you’re going to get denied,” said Rob, more calmly. She looked up at him with those eyes of her, and his irritation melted away at last. ”I like the idea of a future with you,” said Rob, taking a sip of his drink that had magically arrived. He offered Lyra an indulgent smile. ”Like I said, I think it’s a great idea. You’re the one with the considerable fortune,” he added, softening even further still.
