He don't realize that I'm thinkin' about you
IT'S NOTHING NEW Merlin, it was late. Addy apparated in front of the house she shared with Brígh, Irina, and her sister Ivanka. And she was very grateful that the decision to move out had been made the previous year because her mother could hear a pin drop in the middle of the night—sneaking back in so late had never been an option. Naturally, how was one supposed to be successful if they were wasting time doing foolish things until the middle of the night? She adjusted the strap of her purse on her shoulder. One couldn’t really tell under the street lamp, but she was just a tad disheveled. Typically she hardly had much out of place, but this year had been radically different in many ways.
Unlocking the door with her wand took some time. Living with three cursebreakers had its disadvantages at times. Finally, the lock clicked open, and Addy slowly opened the back door, walking into the kitchen. Trying to make as little noise as possible. When she had left for the evening, nobody had been home. Gently, she put her purse on the counter and let out a sigh of relief that she hadn’t knocked over something like a bookshelf as Brígh might have done in the daytime. It was odd to think she had some semblance of a social life. A few things had happened at the beginning of the summer. Brígh, to nobody’s surprise, had managed to get Cheese and Addy in the same room, and they’d awkwardly managed to coexist. It had been far more daunting in her head, but it didn’t stop the flips her heart did in her stomach. And so, with that, she felt a little more comfortable when he was around, not that he swung by often.
And then, a couple of weeks after that, Brígh organized another little get-together. Now that she was here locally for training, these events happened much more often. She’d managed to force way too many shots of firewhiskey, and Merlin knew what else into Addy and then chasing down Cheese to do the same. In her drunken daze, misguided confidence grew, and Addy finally decided to return that sweater to Cheese. Besides, a second-year Auror trainee had asked her on a date, and after contemplating it for a few days, she decided to accept. They all had to move on, right? That meant the sweater needed to be returned—like some symbolic final ending to what was. However, at that moment alone and without the steely guard of her sobriety—a very old pattern began all over again. Addy had not drunk enough to black out, so she remembered very much of the details, and the next day it was acknowledged that it couldn’t happen again. It was far too confusing to do so.
To distract herself, she focused on cleaning their house the following day despite the hangover that the potion didn’t entirely get rid of until dust might as well have been extinct. She still went on that date and then another one. But somehow she’d also end up at Puff Palace, sneaking around his roommates or leaving something behind in her room. A hat, a light sweater, a sock even. And again, they’d agree it needed to stop. Besides, she was casually seeing someone. It was new, nothing particularly serious, but still ongoing. Nothing defined. Addy had managed to fix her makeup before heading home, at least. Opening the fridge, she searched for a water bottle before she heard a voice out of nowhere and received the shock of her life, dropping the water bottle. Turning, she could make the faint outline of a person from the refrigerator light. ”Merlin Brígh, what the hell are you doing sitting in the dark?”

It had been a long day of mind-numbingly boring prep-work. It wasn't that Brígh disliked learning - she actually rather enjoyed it. But it didn't begin to compare to the days spent in the field. She had voiced her opinion on the matter more than once, but her complaints had fallen upon deaf ears. There was nothing to be done but to suffer through one more year of essays, reports and coursework. Brígh and Ivanka had started planning a holiday, one which Brígh was forcing Addy to join them on.
The evening of revising and writing had concluded with a fair few drinks. Brígh had taken the floo back home, worried that her mind wasn't clear enough to apparate properly. The floo hadn't been a good idea either, as it had upset her stomach enough to send her to the toilet. Wiping her mouth and guzzling mouthwash, Brígh took in her sordid reflection in the mirror. She scraped her long, red hair back into a ponytail and retreated to Addy's room to inform her of their plans and her necessary participation.
Brígh had expected the ward to be in effect, even though she ignored Addy's pleas for privacy. She tapped on the door twice and opened it, expecting Addy to be hunched over her desk, examining one contraption or another. What she was not expecting was the neatly made bed and darkened room. Brígh checked her watch - it was just gone eleven in the evening. Narrowing her eyes, Brígh shut the door with a quiet snick, and returned to the lounge.
Where was Addy, if not home? Had something transpired between herself and Cheese? Or someone else? Or maybe she'd been called into work... no, that would be unreasonable. Brígh settled herself into the sofa, flicking through her phone to distract herself whilst she waited for Addy to return with a complete explanation. She hadn't bothered to turn the light on, and at some point she must have fallen asleep.
Brígh was awoken with a jolt when she heard Addy open the fridge for some water. Brígh rose, straightening her crumpled outfit and silently padded towards the kitchen. "Where have you been? No note?" Brígh raised her brows at her best friend. "This has the air of treachery," she added in a low voice, a smirk cracking across her lips.

He don't realize that I'm thinkin' about you
IT'S NOTHING NEW Addy was certain her heart had stopped for an entire beat. It was late, so she hadn’t expected anybody, let alone the one person who would probably read her best. Ivanka she wasn’t as close to, despite knowing each other throughout their years at school and others knew her even less. What was on the surface was a carefully crafted image, but Brígh knew her far better than that. ”Out.” Internally, even Addy raised an eyebrow. But it had just been the quickest answer, maybe far too quick of an answer. Unfortunately, while typically calm and composed under pressure—this was not one of those situations.
But Addy did roll her eyes as she walked over to turn on the kitchen light, so they weren’t in the dark. Opening the water bottle, she tried not to see as dehydrated as she felt. ”I don’t have to be up early tomorrow. What are you doing up?” Addy’s life had changed quite a bit since leaving school and even more post-breakup. She could say she and Cheese were on good terms now, though the nature of that was still confusing her terribly. And that was where the welcome distraction of a young and attractive Auror came into play. Not that anyone really knew about him, though she might have mentioned something to Brígh—she couldn’t remember.
”Stop looking at me like i'm up to no good.” She furrowed her brow just as she’d seen her sister do many times when challenged. Addy wasn’t the type of girl who ever got into trouble, and she wasn’t up to those kinds of shenanigans. She couldn’t afford anything that would derail her career or affect her internship, and as far as she knew, none of this would.

Brígh appraised Addy, who looked put together as ever. But she knew that it was very unlike Addy to be out this late, sneaking back in the house. It stank of deception. "'Ere I was, minding me own business," started Brígh, effecting a midlands accent. "Got drunk with Ivanka. Wanted to tell you we're going on holiday and that you've not got a choice in the matter. But you weren't here," Brígh replied. "What time is it? Merlin, I was tired, passed out on the couch waiting for you," she added, narrowing her eyes at Addy once more.
"You are up to no good. When was the last time you snuck out of this place? I can sniff you out, you know. I know you too well," Brígh countered, a smirk playing at the corner of her lips. "Don't you go all Claire on me, I don't really give a shit. Just want you to be okay," said Brígh relenting at last. She opened her arms and collected Addy in them, giving her a tight squeeze. "First things first. Where were you and what were you up to, you naughty little thing?"

He don't realize that I'm thinkin' about you
IT'S NOTHING NEW Addy couldn’t escape Brígh’s gaze. Similar to the gaze Addy used to employ against her friends when they insisted that they needed her help with their homework assignments. A familiar narrowing of the eyes plus the determination to see what was beyond the surface. ”Holiday? What holiday?” She asked, determined to change the subject and perhaps go to sleep soon. She was rather tired. Involuntarily, she let out a small yawn. Unfortunately, Addy hadn’t figured out the sacred or ancient magic to stop a yawn. ”Merlin, Brígh.” She rolled her eyes. ”You all tell me I need to ‘get out’ more and not just work all the time. So maybe I took your advice.”
Honestly, why where all her actions under scrutiny like this? Since she and Cheese had broken up, Addy felt as though everything she was doing was being scrutinized. And if not by someone else, then certainly by Addy. Brígh approached and Addy more or less stood there while her best friend hugged her. ”Like I said, I was out.” She cleared her throat and moved out of the hug so she could drink more water and try and hide the slightly blush that had crept onto her face. She could only feel grateful that this night was not one of the nights she’d ended up sneaking into Puff Palace—or the blush would have taken over her entire face until it looked like Brígh’s hair.
But, internally Addy knew that Brígh would be stuck to her like a niffler on gold unless she gave her something. Plus, Addy supposed she owed her some kind of news after all her support the past four months. ”I was…on a date.” Addy forced out, though choosing to inspect her water bottle until her blue eyes finally landed on Brígh again. Addy could always feel that lingering unspoken hope that she and Cheese could work things out. There was a spark of it somewhere within herself as well, but it was quickly overshadowed by the pain of it all. Despite their mutual affirmations to stop, Cheese had already snuck in that week which only added to her confusion. Plus, her birthday had just passed that week. Wasn’t she entitled to a little fun for once?

Brígh narrowed her eyes before explaining. "The holiday I am taking you on to loosen up before Ivanka and I have to go back to constant coursework." Hurt dashed across Brígh's face at Addy's tone, and even as she opened her arms to her friend, Addy more or less stood there, looking like she wished it was over. Brígh dropped her arms as Addy stepped out of what was meant to be an understanding embrace. "Don't be such a frigid bitch, Addy. It doesn't suit you," Brígh snapped, firing up at once. "You can't keep secrets from me. We live together. You know I will never ever judge you, no matter how poor your decision making might be," she pointed out, leaning against the kitchen counter as she appraised her friend.
The pair glared at one another in an unspoken standoff, before Addy finally relented. Brígh breathed out a sigh of relief. The past four months since Addy and Cheese's breakup had been rough, not only for Addy. Brígh had managed to bridge the yawning gap between them, but it just wasn't the same. If the pair of them would just move on... or move back together... Brígh sensed the tension that always lingered around the threesome would dissipate. "That is good news," Brígh said at last, her tone mild. "I hope you had a nice time," she added, unable to stop the smirk creeping up on her face. If this date had gone as Brígh had expected it did, Addy would be the only girl in the house not experiencing a harrowing dry spell. "Reckon a bit of tanning would do you some good now," said Brígh after a moment, deciding not to push for details quite yet. Addy was guzzling a bottle of water - it seemed clear to Brígh that she was already feeling the effects of too much drink. "Ivanka and I were thinking Greece. Crete, to be exact."

He don't realize that I'm thinkin' about you
IT'S NOTHING NEW It wasn’t the first time, nor would it be the last. Sometimes Addy let herself float away on the internal whirlwind of her spiraling thoughts that she needed assistance being brought back to Earth. And Brígh had always been happy to assist, much like Addy was when the roles were reversed. She could hear it in Brígh’s tone, and there was an internal regret for the last few minutes. Not that she showed it externally, forcing herself to remain as even as could be. But Brígh’s words had given her pause. She was right—it was incredibly difficult to keep anything from her best friend. And honestly, Addy didn’t want to.
But Addy acquiesced, beginning with the shortest explanation. ”I did.” Her response was simple as she drank more water to occupy herself. ”I hear Greece is lovely. When are you planning? So I can check my schedule at work.” Not that it varied much, but perhaps with enough notice, Addy could work around this to ensure her important tasks were handled. But something tugged at her, or at least the thought did. She had a lot of work. Did she really have time for this? Addy finished her water, fiddling with the empty bottle now. Hopefully, this would help avoid a hangover potion in the morning, but she still felt the slight pressure in her head for now.
”He’s an Auror.” She added, returning to the previous topic. There was the urge to blurt everything out, but that was an easy urge to suppress. She would rather control the flow of information on this topic. Plus, something about her earlier words still rung in her head. ’Frigid bitch’. It made her heart flip as she’d heard just as much, but not in those words, from Cheese. It wouldn’t do to push away her best ally at the moment, despite her capability to do so. She had already pushed away someone close to her, and she was still paying for that. ”Do you remember the guy I told you about at the start of summer? The one that asked me out a few times at work?” He had been persistent but polite all the same.
Addy moved closer to Brígh, leaning on the counter but letting her shoulder bump into hers. ”I don’t mean to be so…cold.” Her voice was lower, but not a whisper. ”Its just been months. And I still miss him…and I want it to stop.” Not that she was doing herself any favors. They were repeating a past pattern and letting themselves do it. No. Addy needed to move on. She needed it to stop. ”I think you know him.” She added, not wanting to linger on that previous thought. But Addy hadn’t given too many details on this new person in her life—the Auror. But he’d been a couple years ahead of them at school. But Addy had to admit that their time together had been quite fun.

There was no apology from Addy, but Brígh hadn't expected one. It was a feat within itself to have Addy admit she was wrong, and Brígh was sated with that knowledge. "This weekend. Just call in sick or something. We'll be grand. It's just two days anyways," said Brígh, waving a hand as if the whole idea of taking off from responsibility was nothing. But to her, it was. Life was just one big adventure, and not even a stuffy classroom could stamp that out of her.
Brígh had been more than happy to change the subject for the moment, to give Addy space to breathe. But to her surprise, Addy admitted that she'd been on a date with an auror. Her mind jumped first to Albus, who had recently completed his auror training. But Addy wouldn't do that. She wouldn't break the girl code. Addy expounded an explanation, and Brígh let out the breath she didn't realise she'd been holding. "Ohh, right. Charles, was it?" she asked after a moment, letting her heartbeat even out.
Addy shifted closer to Brígh, who eyed her. Her fingers clung to the underside of the counter as Addy explained that she didn't mean to be so cold. That she just missed Cheese. "That doesn't mean you can take it out on me. I'm here to support you, not fight you," Brígh countered softly. But she smiled. "If you miss him, you know it mattered. That it was something deep and meaningful, not just some... Connor. Some frivolity," she said kindly. "Who, Cheese? Yeah... obviously I know him..." said Brígh, totally flummoxed. "Oh, the auror! Well... is he fit?" she asked, her voice lowering to a conspiratorial whisper.

He don't realize that I'm thinkin' about you
IT'S NOTHING NEW Addy’s eyes grew wide. ”This weekend? So soon?” No, that was far too short notice to ask for time off, right? And Addy’s eyes stayed just as wide at the suggestion. Skiving off work to simply peruse another country or sit around somewhere? At least coming home this late wasn’t nearly as sinful an act since she wasn’t working at that moment. Did a holiday in Crete sound like a lovely idea? Of course, but she couldn’t skip work—could she? Addy could hear her mother in her head scoffing at such an idea and Claire agreeing with her, but her eyes were not fully behind it. Gray would have agreed with Brígh but mainly out of spite for their mother and her ways.
But rather than respond immediately and snap as she’d already had, Addy held her tongue for a few moments. ”I’ll…I’ll think about it tomorrow.” Addy pinched the bridge of her nose. She was rather tired. A long work week and a little more of a social life took energy. Fortunately, Addy had never been an introvert. ”Charlie.” Addy corrected calmly. He’d told Addy that only his mother called him Charles. ”Caplan…he was a few years ahead of us at school.” A Ravenclaw, but hardly the bookworm-looking type. Not that Addy would have minded.
Addy couldn’t argue with Brígh, not on this. ”I know…” She mumbled in response. The lack of control Addy had on what she was feeling lately was beyond mildly annoying. It was hard to focus when she needed to, which simply wouldn’t do in this competition of interns. Her heart did one of the usual somersaults she’d grown accustomed to but still didn’t like. How deep and meaningful could it have been for Addy to just push it away as she had done? But, lingering on that topic would only make her upset and then more upset that she was upset about it. So Addy returned to the Auror. Though the shift threw Brígh off momentarily.
A light blush crept on Addy’s face as she struggled to keep a straight face at the question—looking anywhere but at Brígh for a few moments. While she’d never considered herself particularly shallow and very different from the giggle girls in the dorms of Hogwarts, she was not blind. Finally, she looked back at Brígh to the side and simply nodded her head up and down in response. It wasn’t that Addy had a type per se. She was relatively short. A couple inches shorter than Brígh. And the Auror—Caplan was very tall. The energy changed between them. Addy let that icy guard she’d constantly bring back thaw out. ”He’s funny as well. Easy to talk to.” A rather easygoing guy, but also an intellectual one. It was all good fun. ”We’ve been on a handful of dates. He wanted to take me dinner for my birthday.” While that had passed on the previous Tuesday, Addy had been busy that evening. So they’d settled on Friday. It felt good to just talk to Brígh, just two giggling girls talking about boys.

"No time like the present, Adds," said Brígh brusquely. "Besides, autumn term starts on the sixth. Won't have a proper break until Christmas and by then we will need another holiday," she added by way of explanation. After a long pause, Addy finally agreed to consider it, and Brígh knew she had one. Despite the darkness, Brígh hid her confident expression, and nodded. "Oh, right Charlie Caplan. Ravenclaw. Blonde hair, yeah?" she asked, trying to place the boy from memory. To be honest, her recollections of Charlie included glimpses in the Great Hall and little else. He hadn't been as bookish as Addy, and Brígh distinctly remembered thinking he wasn't a very good Ravenclaw.
Addy went on to describe Charlie as 'funny' and 'easy to talk to' which were two very generic descriptors, if Brígh had anything to say about it. "Mmm, right," she replied, eyeing Addy. "You sound a bit resigned. I'm also funny as hell and easy to talk to. Should we date?" asked Brígh boldly. She puckered her lips. "I'm a fantastic snog and a better lay," she added with a snort.
"So you were gonna slag me off for a date with Charlie Caplan?" asked Brígh, arching a brow. "I thought you were slagging me off for something important. You're lucky you're pretty. Honestly, what sort of sensible man tries to take a girl out for her birthday? Is it not common knowledge that the birthday is reserved for family and annoying as hell best friends?" Brígh shook her head. "The cheek of him." But she grinned. "Does he give you the... you know..." she lowered her voice and leaned forward to whisper conspiratorially. "Fanny flutters?"

He don't realize that I'm thinkin' about you
IT'S NOTHING NEW Addy considered it again, but she still just pushed it off to the side of her mind for now. That was a problem for tomorrow. She did have quite a bit of work to do, but every time she went down that road of ‘well maybe…’, her brain brought her back to the beginning. So, for now, she didn’t comment more on that topic, but she was also acutely aware of who she was dealing with. Brígh didn’t often take no for an answer when it came to stuff like this. ”No, it's darker. I think he had it lighter in school.” Despite Hogwarts’ ability to connect many people all at once, there were still plenty of people Addy didn’t know.
With a slight laugh, Addy just shook her head. ”Everyone knows you’re my true soulmate.” Addy expressed dramatically. The two were attached at the hip. Perhaps it was why Addy tended to get herself into situations or trouble when Brígh wasn’t around. ”Even Cheese said he couldn’t compete.” Addy paused, staring at the empty bottle in her hand for a moment. He’d said it the previous year like it was as much fact as any sentence written in their textbook. Addy walked to the trash bin to toss the bottle, determined to change the subject.
Returning to her spot next to her best friend, Addy simply waited for Brígh to finish speaking. ”No, of course not. I had plans on my birthday, so we settled on today.” And Brígh continued on the principles of birthday celebrations and the hierarchy of who should be involved. But then Addy found herself blushing again. Leave it to Brígh to ask the real questions. ”Well, you know, he’s attractive.” She began, unsure of where to look at this point. ”And it's been fun—I wouldn’t keep seeing him if it wasn’t.” She admitted, the words leaving her mouth before she’d even processed them. In a way, Addy was catching up to the experiences of many of her peers in school. All the gossip and giggling made a little more sense, but it didn’t mean this was serious either.

Brígh snorted. "And here I thought you were straying from the usual type," said Brígh with a smug look at her best friend. There was a sense of relief, but also of lost that lingered within Brígh. On one hand, it killed her to see her best friend hurting. She wanted to destroy anyone who had made Addy cry. But the fact that her two best friends had done it to one another... it made things a lot more complicated. The loss came from the fact that Brígh knew, at the very core of her heart, that Cheese would never love anyone except for Addy. And whilst Addy could move on and return to just being friends with Cheese, Brígh knew that Cheese would never be able to let go of his romantic feelings for Addy.
Rubbing her temple, Brígh tried to focus on the conversation at hand. She giggled. "Good. It was time someone put these men in our lives in their place," she said with a grin. Addy paused, staring at the empty bottle in her hands before shifting suddenly to bin it. "I hope you're going for the recycling bin," said Brígh airily, with an eagle eyed glare pointed in Addy's direction.
Probing lightly, Brígh just wanted to give Addy a hard time. They spent so much of their time together still, despite both being busy with work and classes and traveling. But nearly every moment in between, they were together. It was almost like being back at school. Brígh assessed Addy with her eyes, before asking the real questions. Addy's half hearted answer was more of a reply than the words that came from her mouth. "Addy, darling, this man sounds rather like a disappointment." She pushed out her lower lip in a pout. "But don't worry, we'll find you a man who gives you the fanny flutters in Malia!" she added, brightening at once. "You've got to test the waters, you know?" she added thoughtfully.

He don't realize that I'm thinkin' about you
IT'S NOTHING NEW Addy gave Brígh a questioning look. ”The usual type?” She looked to her for clarification. Addy didn’t think she had a type. Especially since she’d only seriously dated Cheese and hadn’t really sought to date before that. For other things, it didn’t matter, but it bothered Addy to be seen as predictable in this area. Why? She had no idea, but it gnawed at her. Shifting a bit, Addy couldn’t really let it go for the moment. Was she that easy to read? Did everybody think she would only go for a certain type of person?
Shaking her head, she walked to the bin, glancing over her shoulder when Brígh mentioned recycling. She tossed it in the correct bin, not that she ever forgot. And usually, it was Addy reminding her roommates or fixing it for them. But it had always felt that way. The girls hadn’t worried so much about boys early on in their friendship, and then Brígh suddenly only had eyes for Albus Potter—not something Addy even began to understand. Why would anyone want someone who always walked around with a perpetual rain cloud over their head? Well, it defied logic. The consistency was their friendship, and that with Cheese, Dicky and Eggy as well.
The blush didn’t dare leave Addy’s face as Brígh pressed on and seemed to make it worse as soon as Addy felt it would pass. She rolled her eyes. ”He’s nice and won’t cause any trouble for me.” Addy responded. He was a good choice on paper, but only if her mother’s voice ran through her head. She’d never searched for some whirlwind romance or whatever Brígh and others read in their borrowed muggle novels or what people wrote online. Again, Brígh pushed the notion of ‘fanny flutters’, and Addy couldn’t imagine looking for anything of the sort in Malia while on holiday.
”Test the waters for what exactly?” She crossed her arms, giving Brígh a challenging look. Addy wasn’t looking to jump back into anything so serious so soon. There was that deep-seated fear of feeling that awful again as she had in the Spring. Plus, she felt her heart still lingered where it shouldn’t. Seeing a message on her phone from her ex-boyfriend still made her heart do a flip, even if he was asking a simple question. Not even a conversation. Finally, Addy sighed as she relented to Brígh’s pushing. ”Fine—I don’t know what you expect to happen on this trip, but if I do find someone that gives me the—“ Addy paused, she felt absolutely ridiculous saying this aloud. ”—fanny flutters I’ll clean the house on one of your weekends and help you with that assignment I know you haven’t started for Vector.” Brígh had been whining about this assignment all week, asking for Addy’s help, but she had her own work to complete. But Addy was sure it would simply be a girl’s weekend on the beach and nothing more.

Brígh narrowed her eyes. "Yes, the usual type. Tall, athletic, dark hair." She waved a dismissive hand. "Artistic." Dropping her hands, Brígh smirked at Addy. Her friend shifted, looking uncomfortable. "Look, I've known you so long I can read you like a book. You know you do the same to me. Like you're inside my head, privy to my every thought. Like, what am I thinking about now??" asked Brígh, scrunching up her face and thinking of how she missed Aidan. It had been weeks since they'd last spoken properly. As much as being with him fulfilled her heart, it was more difficult than she had anticipated.
"Trouble is exciting," Brígh countered after a moment of thought. "But I guess you don't want to let yourself feel too much after this sort of heartbreak," she reasoned. She hadn't felt that heartbroken with the whole Albus situation. After all, they'd hardly been an item to begin with. Just the promise of something... which had just sort of fallen apart. Pushing aside those thoughts, Brígh went on to ask about 'fanny flutters' which was an absolute must for any new relationship or fling.
"Fun" Brígh added with a shrug. "For once, just let go. And don't think too much," she added, elbowing Addy playfully in the ribs. "Not expecting you to find your next great love, but Mr Right Now could be out there... waiting for you... ready to give you fanny flutters..." said Brígh, her lips twisting into a smirk. At long last, Addy agreed and Brígh silently celebrated. "Amazing. You always clean so much better than me. I haven't even started on that Vector essay anyways, so the help will be appreciated," said Brígh confidently. "Though I know I'll succeed, I will clean the house on one of your weekends and cook for you for a week," she promised, but her triumph was already written on her face.

He don't realize that I'm thinkin' about you
IT'S NOTHING NEW Addy looked at Brígh in disbelief. She did not have a type. How could Addy have a type when she’d only seriously dated one person? ”You can’t base my type from one person, Brígh.” Addy insisted. There was no way she was that predictable. She didn’t want to be that predictable. She frowned, annoyed that she could seem so predictable. But she couldn’t deny Brígh’s point. Looking at her best friend, her blue eyes met Brígh’s dark eyes. She could tell. Well, Addy had been able to tell for some time now. ”Aidan.” Addy spoke, her voice light. Brígh always made that effort to display that happy abundance of energy, but behind that, it was always more complicated.
She didn’t respond, giving Brígh a look and then looking back at the counter in front of her as she leaned on her forearms. That was the simple way of putting it. There were things Addy could control in her life and things that she, unfortunately, could not. Focusing all her attention on what she could control gave her a greater stability than ‘testing the waters’. Someone like Charlie fell neatly into that bucket, even if whatever was between them was nowhere near what she’d had with Cheese.
Addy looked back at Brígh after she was elbowed. Fun. What they each thought of as fun could be vastly different at times. This version of fun was one-hundred percent from Brígh’s handbook to life. Though every time Brígh said ‘fanny flutters’ aloud, Addy blushed just a little bit. She rolled her eyes. ”Stop acting like you’ve won already.” Addy lightly elbowed in return. ”You know I don’t like to lose.” A smug grin crept onto her face as she looked at her best friend.
