PERSONALITY As a boy, Ewan was immaculate with his things. His books were hardly left on the floor or table. And Ewan always put away even his Quidditch gear at the end of an afternoon of Quidditch with the other boys in the village. But he was still a young boy, after all, so this neatness was not obsessive by any means. But Ewan never had an issue with routine or rules. He was far more disciplined than his sister, and when he had a goal in mind, he worked toward it meticulously. There was much speculation on what Ewan would do when he grew older, but in the meantime, he hadn’t even gotten his Hogwarts letter yet. In contrast to his free-spirited older sister (who is a bit of a hot mess now), Ewan was always very calm and put together. The boy preferred to observe, though when engaged in conversation, you realized he wasn’t as quiet as he seemed. Quick-witted and funny, Ewan finds it easy to get along with people. All the good traits that perhaps his sister could learn from–both of them. There was a confidence in him, which you could see by his posture, though he didn’t cross into the righteous snob territory as his younger sister often did. He supposed it always irked him, but there was never an acknowledgment. The way his parents doted on Juniper. She was a full six years younger, so after beginning at Hogwarts, only their school breaks ever overlapped. And it wouldn’t have been as bad if that eleven-year-old Juniper hadn’t walked up to Ewan one day, standing as straight and tall as she could manage for her age (not all that different from Ewan’s own posture), and began her tirade on Ewan’s life choices to intern at the Ministry and the department he’d chosen and more things that he hadn’t heard because he’d simply walked away. And it was rare for him to walk away. Normally, he was happy to engage in whatever verbal battle he encountered. Ask his peers. He was insufferable when quoting books or school rules. But when his sister graduated, Ewan was willing to talk and find common ground again. They were both Ministry employees now. He was never one to hold a grudge for very long. Still, since Ewan had learned when to keep his mouth shut, many of his own opinions were kept in his head. How Perkins from the Treasury Department had about as much sense as a troll. How easy it was to lift files from the Law Enforcement offices. How the Auror trainees desperately needed to be taken down a peg or two. But his lips were sealed. If you want someone to keep a secret, Ewan is your man. And that worked in his favor for his career in Human Resources. Privy to all the details of his colleagues and how they helped him immensely in his other work. But that didn’t mean that Ewan wasn’t subject to everyday emotions. When things were out of place or out of order, it was an easy way to trigger his temper. Tunnel vision followed soon after that as he focused on the singular goal of fixing that disorder despite the bigger picture. In those moments, Ewan was more likely to let his opinion be known, and very quickly, the charming wallflower sounded as self-righteous as his sister did. That was not any different for Ewan McGonagall, the only son of Liam and Margaret and great-nephew to Minerva McGonagall herself. As the middle child, Ewan supposed it could have been worse. Following behind his older sister was relatively easy. Somehow, Ewan managed a less destructive path. He was always detailed and astute in observation. His parents were confident their son would sort into Ravenclaw once his time came. However, to their surprise, the sorting hat pondered a moment before sending their son to Gryffindor—the house Minerva McGonagall once headed. As Ewan grew older, his personality made it clear the Sorting Hat had been correct on that mark. Ewan could out-argue many of his peers and boldly accepted any such challenge. However, what some might see as bravery and courage could also be mistaken for arrogance and impulsivity. And that was exactly it. Ewan’s tunnel vision perhaps got him into avoidable situations, but not before he got himself out. But he proudly made the house Quidditch team. A hobby since he was a boy, his great-aunt provided Ewan with his first broomstick for Christmas one year. His childhood felt normal, and Ewan received his letter while his sister was in her first year. It was odd for her to be gone. Her energy had always been chaotic and wild, which left the household calm. Or at least as calm as it could be with an eleven-year-old and a five-year-old constantly fighting. But no matter what Ewan did or tried to argue, they always took his younger sister’s side. Was it because she was younger? Perhaps. But nothing incensed him more than seeing her fake cry for his parents and then sticking her tongue out at him when they turned away. And much as he’d done for his older sister, Ewan was happy to remain in the background. He was a sort of wallflower, though his name always spotlighted him. But as the more even-tempered child, he typically got along with everyone. Ewan’s years at Hogwarts felt normal. He excelled in most of his subjects—most notably Transfiguration. But also Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts with an affinity for wandless and non-verbal magic. However, he was also disciplined and studious, which allowed him to do well in the more advanced topics in these classes. But despite all the OWLs and NEWTs, he didn’t know what he wanted to do. One activity, in particular, intrigued him. The school paper was always a small gang of kids who enjoyed writing and the excitement of what investigative reporting could be done at Hogwarts. Who stole the snitch from the Quidditch Locker Room? Who put all those books in the Black Lake? Who let loose the infinitely multiplying bubbles during Potions? Ewan was a decent writer. Many of his peers were far better, but he excelled at something different. Even when he grew much taller, it was easy for the Gryffindor to blend in. Whispers in the Library were easy to hear from the other side of a bookshelf. Or a hushed conversation just around the corner of the corridor. Ewan wasn’t one to participate in gossip, but he certainly knew what was going on in the corridors of Hogwarts. But journalism wasn’t quite calling his name. Ewan had a firm grasp of the school rules within this group of students. It was no wonder he was never chosen as a Prefect. His ability to know those boundaries became helpful. While applying for ministry internships, Ewan applied to several departments. Naturally, he submitted an application for law enforcement, as he’d always wanted to do some good in the world, as his forebearers had. In the back of his mind, Ewan had vague memories of those dark times at Hogwarts and in the Magical World, but Margaret hardly allowed Minerva to tell those stories. And fortunately, Ewan was a bit too young for many memories to stick. However, he also submitted another application to the Legal Department. A solicitor spoke to Ewan during the seventh-year career fair, and Ewan realized this was the sort of work he might enjoy. Surprisingly, Ewan was not accepted into the Auror trainee program. To say he was disappointed was an understatement, but he was selected to train with the Ministry of Magic Legal Department as a future solicitor. The barristers also knocked on his door; however, Ewan was happy to remain behind the scenes. And in no time, Ewan was a full-fledged Solicitor. A role he was happy to work within for about five years. The year Ewan announced he’d switched to work in Human Resources background investigations….well, that was not the most surprising news that Christmas with the family. His older sister, Holly, brought her latest beau to the family Christmas dinner while they all were introduced and met his younger sister, Juniper’s, boyfriend for the first time. It was the least of anyone’s worries that Ewan’s career track was pivoting. But he was happy with this new role. The legal knowledge he’d gained assisting in legal cases and prosecutions was invaluable as he learned about background checks and those types of investigations. The addition of magical technology made the work significantly harder until he could understand and get on board with the new technology. Ewan was more than willing to do just that. As Ewan grew older, he also found it easier to connect with his younger sister. In hindsight, nobody should have realistically expected a seventeen and eleven-year-old to get along swimmingly. But as Juniper approached her graduation, he supposed more common ground existed. And it would only increase from there while his opinion of his older sister only lowered year by year. She hadn’t changed much since they were teenagers, working the same job at the Ministry for just as many years. However, Ewan had to admit that working in tandem in HR sometimes had its perks and fun. However, his work in human resources felt limiting at times. The scope was nothing compared to what was occurring in the magical world. Purifiers attacked symbolic places in the magical world, including King’s Cross station and the Quidditch Stadium. And Ewan felt a bit useless pushing parchment around behind his safe little desk. The only risk in his world was a memo flying into his eye if he was not careful. And after more Purifier stories reached the headlines of the Daily Prophet, including more attacks on International law enforcement agents and Gringott’s Cursebreakers, Ewan realized he was ready for a chance. The final push he needed was the final Purifier attack at Hogwarts. Even if one was not present, the effects were felt. That year, Ewan moved to the Ministry's Transportation Department. His legal background would help him ensure safe travel for witches and wizards worldwide. Additionally, he removed the conflict of interest as he began his side career as a private investigator. It was far too late to enter such a dangerous role as an Auror or Hit-Wizard, and the Law Enforcement Squad had limited roles for investigative work, but Ewan truly enjoyed this type of work. So whether it included investigating a forged will or background on a suspicious person, Ewan was happy to take the work. Not to mention, his animagus form made it far easier to legally conduct his work. Fortunately, one of his favorite sources still manned her desk at Human Resources along with her personal social connections—his older sister. WANT AD
