Cori really needed to stop making a habit of meeting up with people in the Three Broomsticks. The last time she was here she had thrown a table and chair at her ex-boyfriend... all because he had tried to dance with her. He should have known better. Cori didn't like being touched, not by anybody. Especially not in a public place. That was just not okay with her.
But here she was, waiting to meet Mr. Winterfield, a man who was supposedly her father. How was she feeling so calm about this? Shouldn't she be freaking out? Her friends and advisers at the orphanage had always told her that she should be happy if she ever heard from her birth father. But she wasn't happy. Nor was she sad. Or scared. Mostly she just wanted to hear his side of the story.
Granted, she did have quite the temper.

It had been done, he had sent the owl and made the time and place for meeting his daughter, Coriander, for the first time. He had almost had second thoughts once he had set up the meeting, afraid of facing the truth and unsure of what he would exactly tell her. He had dreams and daydreams of the moment they would meet and he always hoped she would just give him a huge and say “it’s okay, your my dad I love you” but he was sure it would not happen. Making his way into the village wearing his long black robes and his ring bearing the emerald stone of Slytherin, with a snake around it. His pace was steady as he kept thinking over what words to use in his head as he could see the three broomsticks becoming closer into his view. She will be angry no matter what he thought to himself trying to prepare for any outbursts she may have, he was ready for them. To be called the worst person in the world, maybe even the “I want nothing to do with you” line which would just break his heart.
He entered the bar as he looked around and spotted her, he had seen pictures of her before from when the Headmaster Reynolds presented him with the info about her, and threatened to kill her. She looks like her mother thought Dwight thinking back to the woman who had borne birth to his such beautiful daughter. Walking over he gave her a smile and unsure of weather a huge would be appropriate or not stuck out his hand for, a handshake. ”Umm…Coriander…I’m Myron Winterfield but everyone calls me Dwight…I’m your father…it’s amazing to finally see you in person” he spoke his tone polite and soft, carefully trying to choose his words, afraid of making the wrong move.

Cori was starting to shake. Her leg was bouncing up and down under the table as she watched every man who entered the pub with careful eyes. Somehow, she knew that none of them were him. Nope, not that guy either... but then, a man walked in and her heart stopped. Something told her to stand up. She quickly sat down however and sat down, hoping he didn't see her stand in alarm. She tried to look nonchalant as he approached her and smile, holding his hand out. Okay, that smile really looked familiar. Pleasant, not too large... yup, it was the same smile she saw when she smiled into a mirror. That was freaky.
She tried to smile too, but she probably just looked like she was sitting on a tack. "I don't shake hands," she said firmly, nodding to the seat across from her. It wasn't that she didn't like him or anything, but she really didn't shake hands. She hadn't worn gloves today, a part of her trying to get used to not caring about her ice cold skin. Now she was regretting that again...
Dwight. So, his name was Dwight. And it was amazing to see her. It was a bit amazing, wasn't it? There was a surreal feeling to the moment, that was something to marvel at. She had thought about this a lot, but for some reason she wasn't ready to get excited yet. "It's nice to... it's good to see you too," she did raise a cautious eyebrow at him, however. "So, you've seen pictures of me then?" Had be been following her life story and didn't say anything this entire time?

He was a little caught off guard by her remark that she doesn’t shake hands his smile disappearing when she said it but he nodded showing no anger, just little confusion but understood in some way. He sat down in the seat she had directed him to seat in her with her body language, taking the seat he looked at her again taking in that for the first time he was truly sitting here. She was safe, no one killing her or torturing her to get to him he was tremendously happy but nervous at the same time. For Dwight, nervousness was an entire almost new feeling for him, the man espoused confidence normally all the time. He figured on what next to say to her where to start and how much to explain without telling her some of his deepest secrets.
However; before he could even bring himself to say another word she spoke first, saying how it was nice to see him too. He felt good to hear that than next her question hit him, like a blade. He knew these questions would come at some point but he didn’t believe that they would come up so soon. He hesitated for a second before answering figuring his words again once more carefully. ”Yes just recent ones of you…never any young ones of you” responded Dwight hoping the answer was a good one. ”So what house were you sorted in at Hogwarts?” he asked believing it was a stupid question to ask but the first thing that popped into his mind. The once always confident politician who was perfect at speaking, was getting nervous and brain fried around his own daughter.

Cori was in Ravenclaw for a reason. She could tell that he was a little nervous, but he also seemed extremely... hopeful? Grateful? She wasn't exactly sure what the other emotions were roaming around him as he surveyed her. However, he did seem just as good at hiding his emotions as she was. Maybe even better at it, considering he was older and probably much more practiced. But her skills in deduction proved to her that he was indeed as nervous as she was, though he was equaling it out with other emotions-just like she was as well. Maybe these two did have some things in common...
She nodded once as he explained that he had only seen recent pictures of her. She wanted to ask how, who had shown them to him, how long had he known about her, why didn't he write sooner... but he had changed the subject. Well, it was probably better that way anyway, considering he probably wanted to know about her. In fact, this question proved that he hadn't been watching from a distance during her entire troubled childhood. This made her feel much better, actually, but she would get to all of her questions eventually, no doubt about it.
"Ravenclaw," she answered, a bit of a proud smile creeping onto her face. "Did you go to Hogwarts?"

So she was a Ravenclaw he was not disappointed in the house choice for her, he believed it fit her already. She seemed to be a natural Ravenclaw he was sure she was smart and able to read people. He knew for almost certain she was able to tell how nervous he was, and if she had known him forever than she would know how unlike it was for him. Part of him of course had wished she had been in his house of Slytherin but part of him feared that the house and its dark roots would have corrupted her. He tried to believe they didn’t corrupt him but than a thought crept into his mind. Reynolds was a Ravenclaw…proudly one and corrupt as they come he thought as he instantly tried to push the dark distracting thought out of his mind. She had asked him what house he had gone to and he did not want her to judge him instantly on being a former Slytherin he was one because he of how ambitious and resourceful he was. ”Wow…Ravenclaw I’m proud. Yes I went to Hogwarts I was in Slytherin house” he said his tone calmly not giving any alarm of saying the house known historically to produce dark wizards and pure-blood sympathizers. ”Now I’m not any of those dark wizard Slytherins so you know. I was an Auror and Head of Magical Law Enforcement department for a good time until I got this job while back. Not to common you find actual nice Slytherins it seems” he added quickly to make sure she didn’t judge him in some way over it, he could never be sure. He had thought if she was a Ravenclaw that she had to be good at studies he was wondering her favorite ones to be. ”You do good in your studies and have favorite subject….I enjoyed Hogwarts very much” he asked hoping to create some bond with her.

So, he was a Slytherin? That was interesting enough... they were knowing for their cunning and ambition, those weren't bad things to be. "Thank you," she responded when he said that he was proud. Ravenclaw was known for their thirst for knowledge and their wits, so she supposed the pride was deserved. "Did you like it there?" she asked. May as well get to know him a little bit while they were here together. Wasn't that part of the reason that they were meeting, after all? Still, she wasn't sure if she would enjoy living in a dungeon. She might fit in better there, with the cold and all though.
She listened as he explained that he wasn't a dark wizard that was typically produced out of the Slytherin house. That was something that made her smile a little bit. Especially the fact that he was in law enforcement, that was admirable if nothing else. She simply nodded to show that she was listening, but she didn't comment on it.
Now he was asking, or rather telling, her that she did well in her studies and her favorite subject. He answered her question, about enjoying his time at Hogwarts as well. "I try to do good. My favorite subject is probably..." it was hard to pick one, for she sort of felt half interested in all of them. "Herbology at the moment," she only chose it because it was the most likely, along with potions, to help with her curse.

He had loved his time at Hogwarts, not just because of the castle its self but also because of the classes, professors, the ghosts, and of course the Forbidden Forest and Black Lake. The common room itself of the Slytherins however was not an ideal place, yes he like how it was set up somewhat and it was cool but, he never liked having to go down to the dungeons to get to his common room. Even more confused when he notice Hufflepuffs heading to the dungeons for their common room as well, why in the damn hell did Gryffindor have a tower but not Slytherin or even Hufflepuff? ”Your welcome, Ravenclaw has always produced some of the most intelligent witches and wizards alike. The Sorting Hat doesn’t make a mistake”responded Dwight his tone more calm than before. He nodded at what she had said was her favorite subject at the moment he had done good at Herbology and of course taken it as a NEWT class but only walked away with an E, not the Outstanding he had been hoping for.
He had not been particular fond of it, however Althea his ex-girlfriend and might have been his wife one day loved the subject given she was a Healer at heart. She’s gone…she walked out and hasn’t even bothered to return my letters he thought instantly pushing it out of his mind to respond back to his daughter. Daughter, a word he would need to get used to now. ”Tricky subject…I was never great at it and didn’t have a huge fond for it; magical creatures was more of my favorite along with potions” he responded giving her a smile before waving over a waitress to order some butter beer, than looking to the young Ravenclaw ”Would you like anything?” he asked his tone calm and nice.

He was right about Ravenclaws producing intelligent members of the wizarding community, so she nodded with a small smile. "So has Slytherin," she added with a nod in his direction. She couldn't deny that Slytherins were clever, it was part of their description after all. A part of her thought she should have ended up there, actually, but the Ravenclaw house had proved to be just as fitting. She got a lot out of the kids in her house, learning much from them and exploring the way their minds worked only made her mind better. It was a good fit, in the end.
Though a part of her still felt like she didn't belong anywhere at all.
"I was going to say, potions is my second favorite," her tone lightened a little at this remark. So, they had one thing in common at least. As the waitress came by and Mr. Winterfield- her- Myron, asked if she wanted anything, Cori nodded. "A butterbeer would be great, thanks," she said, nodding to the waitress before she left to grab the drinks for them. She almost pulled her coin purse out in order to prove that she could pay for herself, but she didn't. She figured it would be courteous to let the gentleman pay.
"So... where do you work?" she asked. She knew it was the Ministry, she just wasn't sure which office. She didn't pay that much attention to the news or anything. She had her own problems to worry about.

Slytherin indeed had produced many intelligent and clever Slytherins over the years, of course Lord Voldemort was one despite, the many terrible things he had done. He saw himself as a new kind of Slytherin, the more accepting and not of the Old Guard that had their dominated pure-blood supremacy views. He was clever alright he had learned the Ministry from the bottom to the top and become an influence throughout the entire place and not just the upper departments. He gave her a little smile when she mentioned that potions was her second favorite subject, he was glad to hear something like that. It was something they had in common and he was glad for it, believing it would make things less nervous for both of them. He nodded when she ordered the butter beer and thanked the waitress as she walked off to fetch the drinks.
He was about to respond to her question of where he worked when the waitress came back with their butter-beers and placed them on the table. Reaching into his cloak pocket he grabbed some galleons and gave them to the woman, it was enough plus a tip. He drank a little bit of the beer before going to answer Coriander’s pervious question. ”Well, I’m the Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic…so basically I’m his second in command” he answered her question as he drank a little more. ”You’re a seventh year correct? Put any thought to a career path or what to do after Hogwarts” he asked hoping his daughter had a plan and was successful in her life. Getting her a job in the Ministry would be easy as a snap for most entry-level positions, people owed him favors and always wanted to be owed a favor by someone almost as influential as the Minister.

Coris eyes widened as Myron explained where he worked. Her jaw may also have dropped just a little bit as well. He sounded no nonchalant about it too! Like it was a completely normal thing to be the freaking second in command of the ministry. She closed her mouth and nodded. "Wow, erh, do you like it?" she sort of stammered out the words, suddenly embarrassed by the fact that she was sitting with someone so... important. And the fact that he was her father just made her even more nervous. No, she needed to keep her cool. She was relieved that the butterbeers arrived so that she could take a sip to calm her sudden nerves. Yup, she was feeling a little better now at least.
"Oh," at the question of a career, Cori stiffened. "I haven't actually... planned anything..." what an embarrassing thing to admit to a man with such a successful career who was in turn your father! She really hadn't thought about it at all. She was too obsessed with finding a cure to her curse. Wait.... did he even know about the curse? Most likely not unless somehow someone had told him about it. But she had only told maybe two people, and one of those people was in America...

He could tell that she was shocked by the position he held, given the power and influence it held and of course the pay was not bad either. However he had money from his parents, they had been tremendously smart with their money not spending it on waiters or butlers and making sure their son knew money, influence, and power only came with hard work and determination. He gave a little grin as he could tell she was shocked, it made him feel good to impress his daughter with the job he held, and that her dad was not some dead beat wizard who never did nothing with himself. Did he like it? No, he loved it. The ability to get things done and have things changed for the people and to help them out in a way where he could control outcomes in some matters was perfect calling for him. ”I love it, I miss the days of being an Auror but. I’m in a position where I can influence events and actual make real change and help people. The politics side of it however…well I guess the daily prophet said it best I’m a bull in a political china shop” he said giving a little chuckle.
It was documented in the press that he was not someone who shied away from any political fights and had no problem making dangerous politically incorrect statements. He assumed she was embarrassed when she made the statement that she not thought about a real career yet for herself or planned something out. He was a little disappointed hoping she would be more prepared but he quickly made the mental note not to show that to her or tell her that. ”Well, you still have time to choose and it’s not like your choosing for rest of your life. I started out studying Wand lore and then working in the Sprit Division of the Regulation of Magical Creatures after Hogwarts before I even decided to go and become an Auror” he commented his tone pleasant hoping that the comment would not make her feel embarrassed more than she was.

Oh great. He was an auror too!? Could this guy literally get any more intimidating? It was obvious that he was trying to make her feel more comfortable by explaining how he missed the more ‘active’ side of the ministry, but it actually wasn’t helping. No, if anything it was making her ten time more nervous than he had previously been. Cori was skilled with a wand, sure, but she probably wasn’t the best dueler. Nor did she want to be. ”So, why didn’t you just become the minister, then?’” she asked, a little bit of a harshness underlying her tone as she said it. No doubt that was his goal. And that would make her feel even more overwhelmed. She wasn’t sure if she could handle suddenly being the daughter to the minister of magic.
Not that he’d accept her as his daughter in a public setting... she had no idea where they were headed in that regard. Plus, she had gone seventeen years without a father, why should she be embarrassed that she didn’t have a smooth career path going for her? Granted, he had just suggested that she needn't pick one right away... He hadn’t been around to help her choose any paths, though.. However, they may not have been his fault... ”Oh,” she started as he told her she had plenty of options and time to decide, ”too be honest I have something else on my mind right now. Kind of a... project,” how would you explain trying to break a curse that was put on you before you were born? Would he know about the people who had done it? Then it hit her.
Whoever cursed her must have known this man, because it just couldn’t be a coincidence that ‘winter’ was in is name and her curse was that of ice cold skin. Someone had a cruel idea of a joke. ”do you... what all do you know about me, anyway? Where did you hear about me?” she asked, leaning forward on the table a little bit. The time for pleasantries was over, she decided. There were too many issues pressing on her right now.

Her tone had harshness in it when she asked not just become Minister, oh if she only had known. He had trying to become Minister for years, first when Fudge was being shown as stupid and not believing Voldemort was back he tried to run against him but Fudge had him sidelined at once when he saw that the man was trying to go against him for his job. Than after Kingsley died he was ready to step into the position, he believed the Wizengamont was going to appoint him as soon as they convened but instead they choose a lesser man the current Minister, who he was going to take on one day a time. ”The times I have tried events happened, Fudge sidelined me back when I was younger. Kingsley was my mentor and gave me this position I would have never ran against him, rest his soul, and well Minister Cain made the right friends at the last minute I guess” spoke Dwight honestly answering why he was not Minister currently, it was no secret in the public eye he disliked the Minister and wanted his job, but somehow the man was still loyal enough to serve and carry out the man’s agenda.
He looked at her as she spoke saying something else was on her mind, something of a project of some kind that she seemed to be focused on. He nodded to her even though he was confused on what kind of project would take priority over her own career path and future for herself. She had to have a job for money, or how would she survive. No daughter of his would be a beggar on the streets of Knockturn Alley, ever. Watching her lean onto the table when she spoke next to ask her questions he knew the pleasantries of this reunion were coming to a sharp end. Nodding he searched for the correct words, knowing he had to tread carefully here on exactly what he told her. ”I will be honest Coriander, I did not find out that were alive and here of all places until, August. Your Headmaster Burt Reynolds….he told me about you and that you were my daughter; explained some of the history and connected dots. I’ve only seen pictures of you from this year not ever a baby photo…” he spoke softly and slowly to her.
Taking a little breath and giving a sigh he thought back to the affair he had with her mother, the muggle named Cassidy. His family despite not hating muggles, would never have accepted him ever having a real relationship with the woman he fell for that night. ”I had learned about a few years back that Cassidy your mother had become pregnant around the time me and her met each other. I had no luck tracking you down until the Headmaster….decided to tell me…and make clear intentions” his voice lowered down when he said at the end not wanting others to overhear the last part about Headmaster and his intentions.

Cori swallowed hard. So, he wanted to be the Minister. That was just perfect. First he was so close to the position, now she's finding out that he actually has been trying to get it! How was she supposed to compete with that? Live up to that? It would have just been a lot better if she didn't have a father in the first place. No. No, this was a good one. She should be proud and impressed not embarrassed and surprised. Suddenly, however, the eyes of the people in the pub all seemed to be staring at her. She felt exposed. What if there was a reporter here somewhere just waiting to report on the seventeen year old with Myron Winterfield? Cori leaned forward, bending an elbow to bring a hand up by her face. "Wow... well, better luck next time?" she had no idea what she could say about that.
It was odd to hear the man say her name, but it was also sort of relaxing. Her mother gave her that name and she had no idea why. The Pepsi, however, was given to her by a silly social worker. Coriander Winterfield... that didn't sound to bad actually. But hey, hey. This doesn't mean he's going to take her in. She's of age now so it doesn't exactly matter. "But the Headmaster... he's gone now. Why would he tell you in August?" that was only one of the questions that sentence brought out. Like what was the history and how did the dots connect? "It's okay, I don't think a baby photo of me exists," she encouraged, knowing that must have been a strange thing to think about for him. Only seeing this seventeen year old.
She was glad that he seemed okay with easing into the topic of her mother. "Headmasters... intentions?" this went back to her question before, she was sure.
