▲ If all else failed in her life, maybe this inebriated contract would actually lead to something. Mina already knew that children were out of the question for her. She was fine with Sebastian and that was it. Mostly because she only had to occasionally watch him and be the fun aunt, instead of the one wholly responsible for him. Sometimes she wondered if Sarah was actually more capable than her at that, but at least her sister was trying. Mina could sometimes still barely take care of herself, which was why she still lived with Callisto. Benny would do though, and it would be fun by that point anyways. Surely it wouldn’t actually happen. She had all the confidence in the world that he’d be able to pull it off before she ever could, assuming she didn’t accidentally end up saddled with some muggle dude. The horror. The temptation of the poor quality whiskey was enough for Benny to finally relent and leave the carpet, much to her dog’s dismay. Eventually, Titania would have calmed down, but not after a few aggressive barks of excitement and a tear around the entire apartment. Thank Merlin for soundproofing charms. Their neighbors probably thought her dog was the quietest thing in the world, and never knew how many people she managed to drunkenly drag into her bedroom up until the last few years. ”Right-“ she hiccupped, the earlier shots still coursing their way through her bloodstream. ”To being single losers on this disgusting day of ‘love’ and whatever. Friendship beats fucking…but only by a little bit,” Mina declared, moving her glass against Benny’s before taking a healthy swig of it. It barely burned after everything else she’d had so far. ”You know, I really hate Valentine’s Day. Why can’t couples say they love each other every other day of the year? Why do they need today? It’s so fake…”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

we can be strong out on this lonely run, on the road to love That drunken agreement would probably sit in the back of their minds, eventually becoming covered in dust and cobwebs. Not because it would or wouldn’t happen, but Benny and Mina were never the type to bring it up unless necessary, which meant not for another decade, at least. Then again, Benny could very well end up married as his mother and Veronica wished—but not likely. At this point, he was determined not to let them try to run his life. The part that annoyed him the most was that they had left him alone for so long. Why was this so important now?
The fact was that Mina could also find someone one day. It was possible some guy would come along and realize how awesome she was. To see what Benny saw in his best friend as well. For now, they settled on cheap alcohol. He didn’t even ask what it was and instead had to use most of his brainpower to focus on her toast. Benny raised his glass to meet Mina’s, drinking a mouthful of whatever was in the glass. The burn was strong and not entirely pleasant. Sending a strange chill up his spine.
”Exactly!” He responded, pointing at Mina with the glass in his hand. Fortunately, not enough was left to spill over the sides. You k-know—I sort of pity them all.” Benny slurred as a thought popped into his head. ”Like…they have to deal with so much—“ The word escaped him for a moment. He waved his free hand around as if to conjure up the rest of the sentence. ”—nonsense and drama and fakeness and still end up celibate.” It sounded like a bloody awful time to Benny. Drinking the rest of his glass, he put it on the nearest surface and dropped himself onto the couch.
It wasn’t the most comfortable couch, but not the worst. But at the moment, Benny could feel how cushiony it actually was. It took his entire attention span until he bumped into Mina while moving a pillow. ”Did you get a new couch?” Or maybe not. The moment felt a bit like déjà vu, but Benny couldn’t quite put his finger on it. Seeing the bottle of whiskey out of the corner of his eye, Benny drank directly from the bottle, which reminded him of what they’d been talking about. ”I t-think…everyone should say nice things to people.” He paused, thinking. ”To like people they know and stuff.”
Yea, that was close enough to his thought. Why did one need a fake holiday to tell the people they cared about how they felt? It felt ludicrous and forced. ”For example—“ He began grandly. ”Y-you are the bestest best friend. ” Benny declared, habitually holding out the bottle for Mina. And a great lay, he continued his thought in his mind, growing distracted by how his body sunk into the couch. Benny was never the shy type, even if he still needed liquid courage sometimes. Not for this, though—not for those like Mina or Rue, who were important anchors in his life.

▲ Mina pointed at her friend with the hand that held her drink as he hit all the same thoughts she was having. Who the hell wanted to be in a relationship that was only actively celebrated a few times a year? Definitely not her! She didn't even have a good example of one to look at either, which sort of sucked. Callisto had whatever her thing was, but kept it to herself most of the time. Sarah was, well, not a shining anything. As far as Mina was concerned, Sebastian was the only good thing to come from her oldest sister. And then that left her parents, who were apparently too busy blowing apart their marriage as of late than caring about the rest of their family. That was just the way things seemed to work in the Oliveira family. "Yeah, not putting out is like, relationship killer number two. After shite communication," Mina said with the authoritative tone of knowing what that was all about. Except she'd never had any kind of official significant other ever. It sounded nice in theory, but had no one to look towards to figure out what to do. She sort of assumed no one would want to stay with her long term either. At least not with the way she used to be. It sort of sucked having a bit of a reputation and then trying to find a way to settle down. She often times thought about how she'd do over her post-graduation years differently, especially with the sleeping around and days that had disappeared from inebriation. Benny fiddled around with one of the couch cushions and then inquired about it being new. She almost laughed, because he was too far gone to see the giant wine stain that he had sat on. Magic could have gotten it out, but Callisto's thought process was leave it a mess until either of them had an important guest over. Between the dog, Sebastian, and the two of them, it got its use and then some. "Nope! Maybe it was cleaned since you were last here?" she asked. That was the only thought she had. "And you're mine," Mina drunkenly grinned at him as she took the bottle back and refilled. She was beyond fucked at this point but didn't really care. Magic would solve most of the problems that would arise out of tonight. "Suppose life would suck a lot more if we weren't," she added with a hint of melancholy. They were both in the same boat, sort of. Hanging on to their odd jobs and not really progressing like some of their peers. But somebody had to run the bookstore counters. Why not the two of them?
