Jewel Jonah Young
WAND 13¼, dogwood, dragon heartstring, solid
APPEARANCE Jewel is a slender, yet athletic, 183 cm/6 ft tall man. He loves to decorate his body with clothing and jewelry, though piercings or tattoos are not something Jewel has—at least not yet. Jewel's style is leaning more towards a gender-nonconforming way to dress, as he enjoys lace, ruffles, sheer, flowy fabrics and all things pretty. Despite carrying himself with relative grace, Jewel does have a tendency to be a little clumsy. To be more specific, he has zero spatial awareness, and tends to hit his hand into things while gesturing, for example. He does move fluidly and confidently though, if that redeems him at all. Unsurprisingly, this chaotic energy shows in the way Jewel speaks as well. He tends to talk fast, saying a lot and nothing at the same time. This speech is delivered in an odd Irish accent—his Louisianan mother has influenced the way Jewel speaks, making his accent somewhat of an amalgamation. This influence is by no means strong, and you probably wouldn't even notice it unless you paid special attention to it, but it makes the way Jewel talks feel just a little off. | pronunciation just like the words are pronounced nickname none, sadly, because Jewel would love a nickname age & birthday 27 years old 20.04.2000 gender & pronouns cis man, he/him blood status half-blood sexuality gay face claim Robert Sheehan | |||||||||||||||||||||||
PERSONALITY Radiating positive energy, you can always count on Jewel to make your day brighter. He is happiness incarnate, with an everlasting smile and boundless optimism. He never seems to sit still, his infinite energy always appearing to spill over in the form of, say, a bouncing leg. That being said, he can come off as irritating to some, especially those who get overwhelmed easily. Though his loud presence does function as a warning to everyone who might not enjoy his company. Those who Jewel doesn’t manage to scare off with his intense energy get a loyal friend. His loved ones are literally everything to him. Jewel rarely spends time alone, and even though he is quite confident and independent, he feels lost whenever he’s been on his own for too long. Jewel is also willing to go to great lengths for his friends and family—no matter how heavy or trivial the situation is. Jewel has a bad habit of trusting people a little too easily. He is a bit naive, believing that everyone deserves a second chance—or three, maybe even four. No matter how much someone hurts Jewel, he most likely will just hide it behind his signature smile and forgive. He truly will put other people’s wellbeing over his in any situation. These people-pleasing tendencies do span a lot further than that. Jewel actively avoids any kind of conflict, settling for blissful ignorance. Maybe this is why Jewel’s problems tend to pile up, with him occasionally ending up extremely emotionally exhausted. He, however, in his blissful ignorance, will never admit that this is a problem. Does it even happen in Jewel’s rose-tinted world? These neglected thoughts and feelings do not go completely ignored, though. The outlet Jewel uses is art, and despite him not actually facing his inner turmoil while he is painting, it is the only time he allows himself to feel those emotions, as long as he can put them on paper—he prefers muggle tools for creating art, as that’s what he learned from his muggle mother. It might come as a surprise to most how a cheerful person like Jewel can create such melancholy pieces. His landscape paintings often have a surrealist, lonely feel to them, despite the bright colors Jewel tends to use. Every now and then these pieces have odd creatures not even the magical world has seen lurking in the shadows. When it comes to academic intelligence, Jewel really isn’t the brightest. He didn’t do too well in school, aside from a few subjects, the most obvious being divination. It was the only subject Jewel was genuinely interested in, and it shows even in his adult life. Having natural talent for divination, it is no wonder he pursued a career in the field. Being clairvoyant doesn't always fit well with Jewel’s desperate need to ignore everything negative—facing and accepting the fact that not everything he sees in the future is positive has been an ongoing struggle for over a decade. It doesn’t help either that Jewel finds it harder to get control over his power every time he feels down—be it that he isn’t in the best mental state, or just the fact that he is so deep in denial that he refuses to learn. It is as if whenever Jewel feels crushed, he attracts the negative energy of the world, his visions more likely to be negative as well. ORIGIN & RELATIONS Born and raised in Cork, Ireland Stephen Young / died at the age of 27 / father Eden Young / 54 / mother Willow Quill / 29 years old / sister Iris Quill / 6 years old / niece Hortensia Young / 86 years old / grandmother Arthur Young / 85 years old / grandfather HISTORY The love story of his parents, Stephen and Eden, is one Jewel has heard many times from his mother. Eden, a muggle, born and raised in the US, but at the time studying in Cork, wouldn’t have guessed that the city would be the place she would call her home for decades to come. Falling for Stephen had been unexpected, but not even the discovery that her soulmate was a wizard deterred Eden. After dating for a little over a year they got married, soon after having their first child, Willow. Almost two years passed from their daughter’s birth, and Jewel was born. This domestic bliss lasted a tragically short time. Jewel wasn’t even six months old when his father passed away in a car accident. Grief-stricken, Eden tried to keep herself together for the sake of her children. Widowed at 27, she luckily wasn’t alone, as her late husband’s parents helped her out with the kids. It also made it easier for Eden to keep her children in touch with the wizarding world. Jewel spent a lot of time in his childhood in the magical parts of his home city, getting to know quite a lot of things—the curious, outgoing boy was always eager to see new things and meet new people. At least Eden had a stable job as an engineer, so the family wasn’t tight on money despite her being a single parent. The same couldn’t be said about her time, but luckily Stephen’s parents were willing to help with the children. Hortensia, Jewel’s grandmother, had been a housewife her entire life, so she could take care of him and his sister whenever Eden didn’t have the time. Eden was often working late, but at least she tried to devote her weekends to her children as best as she could. Jewel was lucky to have Willow. The two of them grew close, and this inseparable sibling bond is still unbroken to this day. Of course they had their own social circles, but these tended to mix every now and then. It is no wonder that for the two years his sister was at Hogwarts before Jewel was old enough to attend, he missed her a lot. Jewel finally boarded the Hogwarts Express with his sister in 2011. Being sorted into Hufflepuff didn’t stop Jewel from spending a lot of time with his Ravenclaw older sister. There might have been a time when Willow would have preferred to be left alone with her friends, but she never dared to tell that directly to Jewel. Jewel himself ignored any signals his sister might have given him at the time, and since then Willow has joked about it—there are so many things Jewel sees, but social cues are often not one of them. From the very beginning of his school years Jewel wasn’t doing too great when it came to his grades. He always preferred sitting in the back of the class, rather talking to his friends than listening to the teachers. He did a bit better when it came to learning in practice, though when it required focus and dedication, he often struggled. However, Jewel wasn’t completely hopeless, and he actually did well in some subjects—most importantly, divination. As Jewel started studying divination he showed exceptional talent, making surprisingly accurate predictions, especially when he occasionally saw hazy visions of the future. Of course this power had manifested earlier in his life as well—Jewel used to get incredibly accurate and intense gut feelings in some situations, as well as some weird glimpses into the future even as a child, but he didn’t pay them much attention. After all, everyone had those random hunches, didn’t they? Jewel only realized that he might be clairvoyant after his teacher mentioned the possibility to him. Jewel graduated in 2019 with below average grades—but at least he graduated. Wondering what he wanted to do with his life, he lived with his mother for a couple of years, working some customer service jobs in the magical district of Cork. He wanted to do something with his talent in divination, but considering how many didn’t even believe in the practice, job opportunities weren’t exactly abundant. The solution Jewel came up with was starting to read people’s fortunes at home. He started spreading the word through his friends and everyone he could, trying not to be pushy. The start was a little rocky, but Jewel started earning money on the side—of course it wasn’t enough to live off of, but it was a start. In the beginning of his divination career, Jewel did offer the services of a naming seer. He enjoyed meeting cute newborns, helping their parents pick out a name fitting their destiny. However, in his naivete, Jewel hadn’t considered the children whose futures didn’t look as bright. As soon as he met the first child with misfortune waiting for him in the future, Jewel stopped this practice altogether, and started only doing readings for adults. There was no chance he would try to work on himself to get over this issue—it was difficult enough to face the fact that adults sometimes had hardship coming for them, but children, especially ones as sweet and innocent as newborns? That was an impossible task. In 2019, Jewel acted as the man of honor in Willow’s wedding. His sister was marrying her sweetheart from school, and Jewel couldn’t be happier for her. Since he’d been her best friend for pretty much her entire life, she wanted her brother to be her right-hand man during one of the most important times in her life. Jewel considered this a great honor, and one of the greatest symbols of how close he and Willow are. Soon after, in early 2020, Jewel made one of the most influential decisions of his life—he moved to Hogsmeade. He had been considering it for a long while, as he felt like the town’s nature as a popular spot for witches and wizards to visit would be ideal for a fortune teller—and he was right. Though in the beginning, he worked as a waiter at Madame Puddifoot’s in order to make a living. The work was enjoyable, and the overly cheery man fit the establishment’s atmosphere perfectly. For a while Jewel’s life was pretty uneventful, but in the summer of 2021, Jewel accidentally discovered something interesting. His exploration of new art mediums ended in him having a vision of his niece, Iris, before he had even heard a word of Willow’s pregnancy. This vision was triggered by an inkblot, a tool Jewel never even knew could be used in divination. The discovery intrigued him, and he headed to a library for the first time since graduating from Hogwarts. To his surprise, Jewel didn’t find much. He found out that muggles apparently had their own form of fortune-telling with ink, but that wasn’t what Jewel had discovered. Then again, what had he expected, what did muggles know about fortune telling anyways? Now, some books had passages on actual divination with the help of inkblots, but there was not much detailed information on the practice. Apparently he had stumbled upon quite an obscure form of divination. This find encouraged Jewel to research more, trying twice as hard to find any sources that talked about inkblot divination. Though Jewel was far more excited about getting to experiment in practice. He was no researcher, but he had enough enthusiasm and curiosity to try to figure out the secrets of telling the future from inkblots. It became his passion from this point, making him stand out in the realm of divination with his unique techniques. During christmas 2024, Jewel had been visiting his family for a few days over the holidays, but had returned to Hogsmeade on the 26th. After all, he couldn’t afford to waste the opportunities the winter festival offered. As a new year was right around the corner, it was prime time for getting your fortune read, and with people visiting the festival, Jewel knew this was the most lucrative time for a fortune teller. This would turn out to be a bad decision, as Jewel ended up hiding in his home with a client while dragons rampaged Hogsmeade. No wonder he’d been having a bad feeling for a couple of days before, if only he had listened to that hunch. Jewel and the client survived the dragon attack physically unscathed, but the experience left Jewel paranoid for a good while. Still, in his usual fashion, he never properly dealt with that trauma. By 2026, Jewel was doing decent money with divination—enough for him to drop the other job. He had some loyal customers, and his practice of divination with inkblots had gained him a name among those interested in the field. His customer base consists mainly of tourists, but also some students over the age of 17—again, he does not want to read the fortunes of children. Though the hag’s fever outbreak of 2025 hindered his success a little, it wasn’t enough to put him in too much trouble in the long run. Jewel was still reading people’s fortunes in his living room—and still does to this day, but he also started selling some trinkets said to be lucky. These crystals and other curios are just as cryptic as divination—some people believe that they are complete nonsense, whereas others carry them everywhere in hopes of good fortune. Jewel himself isn’t quite sure of their effect, but he truly believes that there is some truth to the talk around these good luck charms. SITE EVENTS REACTION Living in his own bubble, Jewel rarely reads the Daily Prophet or any kinds of news in general, but he often hears of tragic events sweeping the wizarding world through friends or family. At the time of the murders at Hogwarts, Jewel had already graduated a few years earlier, but the news of these tragic deaths did reach him quite quickly. He had some younger cousins who were still at Hogwarts, and Jewel heard of these attacks through his grandparents. Worried for the safety of his cousins, Jewel started actually avoiding hearing any news. It wasn’t like Jewel had been in touch with his cousins too much, but he for sure didn’t want them to be in danger. Jewel did hear about the occasional threat of the groups terrorizing the magical world whenever they were headline news, but he always managed to forget them almost immediately. If you’d ask him about any of the events, he couldn’t probably tell you anything. He could remember the news of Hogwarts burning down being a topic everyone talked about for a while, but other than that, everything is a little hazy. WANT AD
