mid-may 2028. london, rue's warehouse.
IT HAD BEEN A MONTH since Rue Weiss had fallen down the rabbit hole. Her daily consumption of her potions and muggle drugs had grown in the last month in order to numb herself and her mind. Deep down, the rational side of the Weiss knew that her reasons behind it all was ridiculous. Something that could have been fixed with a little bit of communication. But talking about things that related to her feelings was part of the potioneer's weaknesses. Rue simply wasn't ready to see their mother move on, fearful that the memory of her father and his presence would be forgotten. Rue wasn't ready for any of it. Since 2020, Rue's life felt like it was on a decline. Her father was injured first in the fall and died after her seventeenth birthday, just before the new year. What a great way to start the year. But it was thanks to her father that the addiction to keep her mind quiet and body feeling rather blissful had developed.
Except..Rue didn't know when to stop. Nor did they want to admit that they were an addict and had technically been one for almost eight years. Creating and selling potions had become easier with age, especially since Rue's skills had only developed with time. But with recent events, all of Rue's hard work had undoubtedly started to unwind itself. Although...Rue had..somewhat of an intervention with Mina, following the night she was dropped at the latter's door by Malcolm. While high, Rue absolutely hated Mal for it, drawing up all the ways to embarrass him the way he had done to her. But again, another voice within the Weiss knew it was the best idea Malcolm had.
None of it mattered though. Especially since no one understood. Nor did the Weiss want anyone to understand. No one had helped her when he died, believing that Rue was fine through the mask she presented, from the potions she had taken. Resulting in the Weiss grieving in her own way, by simply never confronting it. Like all other nights, the Weiss ended up at her warehouse in London. A place that only few friends knew of, but was secretive enough. On the counter were potions, labelled with Rue's scraggly hand-writing from when she was too high to even see the spaces between letters. While a small line of whatever Muggle drug she had picked up a few nights before was laid out carefully next to the tray. Lately, business was booming luckily, with the usual noises within the warehouses being filled with cauldrons of potions being stirred and catered to. But that night, it was silent, glass bottles hitting one another as Rue lifted one after the other.
First on their tongue was four drops of their recreation of Pepper-Up, their best seller. Followed by three drops of their Calming Draught and Draught of Peace amongst single or double drops of three other bottles. By the second drop of their fourth potion, the Weiss' eyes dilated, her mouth suddenly feeling slack and dry. Believing she just needed to shake it off, Rue reached for her rolled up dollar that she had saved from a trip home, and soon enough the sound of the Weiss sniffling along the counter filled the air. Their brain accelerated a little before slowing altogether, her eyes and body matching, before it all came crashing down. On the other side of the counter was a bottle of water that slightly-sober Rue left themselves. As completely-out-of-it-Rue stood, one hand holding onto the counter, they tried to grab the plastic item, but missed their footing and instead fell on the ground.
It was there that the Weiss discovered she simply couldn't move. As if her body could do nothing more than shut down. Slowly, Rue's eyes closed, slightly rolling as they opened as if they were taking a long time to blink. Along with it, Rue let out a long deep breath. Their chest felt like it was burning, her lungs begging for the oxygen it was lacking. Her heart searching for something to pump while her brain only slowed down. Upon the counter-top, Rue's phone buzzed several times. She had been ignoring everyone's calls and texts for what felt like weeks. It was getting to the point that the Weiss saw no point in even keeping the phone charged. But she did so anyway, for whatever reason.
Everything the potioneer hoped for and wanted to forget slowly sunk with her body, and eventually not even the floor felt real anymore. Truthfully, nothing felt real anymore. Was this it? She wondered. Was this the sign she was dying? Without any knowledge that Rue wasn't even breathing, it was as if their body stilled completely, the potions and drugs soaking her altogether, merging and forming the last straw that would quite literally kill the Weiss. Unbeknownst to her, Rue's phone continued to buzz and as a few minutes passed, the door handle for her warehouse began rattling.
With the only sounds within the warehouse being Rue's phone buzzing and the rattling of the door handle, the Weiss lied there almost lifeless. Eyes half closed and mouth open enough, Rue was sure she was close to death, from the sort of overdose she had never experienced before. Close to accepting their fate within their subconscious, Rue from within also closed her eyes until-
Coughing loudly and breathing deeply as she jerked upwards, Rue took in their surroundings. The buzzing coming from her phone had stopped while the door of the warehouse was open and above the Weiss stood Mina and Benny - her two (and honestly, only) closest friends. She had only been 'gone' for more than five minutes but nothing made sense. She had taken more drugs than usual, for the selfish need of those two seconds of nothingness. But instead something within the Weiss had changed, diluting quite literally everything she had ingested. It hadn't been more than ten or fifteen minutes since the Weiss had even taken each of the drugs, yet the immediate feeling she received from each of the bottles had reversed, disappearing almost instantly. Usually, Rue's body went through various phases. Their body temperature changes, pupils dilated, actions slowed, overall feelings changed. But now she felt...sober. Completely and utterly sober.
Blinking up at her tearful friends, watching as the two of them looked at the countertop and down at their friend on the floor, Rue didn't anticipate Mina nor Benny's embrace. The Weiss was confused. She couldn't explain what had happened, nor what they were feeling. But within her, the Weiss' body soaked up the potions, the drugs, the overall poisons from it all and purified her. For a moment, the Weiss was scared, believing she would actually die that night. It wasn't that Rue had an overwhelming wish to live, but she knew she most certainly didn't want to die either. Something within her had saved her, but she just didn't know what.
