isabel alejandra MORENO-HUGHES
WAND 10 ½ inches, rowan, dragon heartstring core, pliant
APPEARANCE Isabel is relatively short, standing at 5'2" in height, and is slim with some curves. She has long dark brown hair and eyes, with a light olive skin tone. Both her earlobes are pierced once each, and she has a scar on her forehead from a fall she suffered as a small child. When she was younger, Isabel was more boyish in her appearance, but she began to embrace a more feminine, grown-up style while attending Beauxbatons. Now that she no longer has to wear a uniform due to the changes in policy that came along with the formation of LIFE, she is happy to wear Muggle clothing on a regular basis. Wizarding robes still feel silly and like something of an anachronism to Isabel; however, she will wear them if it's required of her. | pronunciation Ee-sa-BEHL Ah-leh-HAHN-drah More-AIN-oh HYOOZ (Isabel's first name is typically pronounced as IZ-uh-behl in English, so she's used to hearing both on a regular basis.) nickname Is; Isa; Issy; Sabela (by her mother) age & birthday 17 10 February 2011 gender & pronouns Cisgender female; she/her pronouns blood status Muggle-born sexuality Heterosexual face claim Dafne Keen | |||||||||||||||||||||||
PERSONALITY Isabel's personality has been shaped significantly by her experiences in the magical world—and not necessarily for the better. Although she started out life as a pretty quiet child in the Muggle world, she was intelligent and applied herself and would have been described as generally happy. She didn't become anywhere near as withdrawn until she began studying at Hogwarts. There, she was thrown for a loop by nearly everything around her, and she found it incredibly difficult to adapt to being a witch. When at home, she would try to revert to how she had been pre-Hogwarts, and she succeeded initially. As the dangers at Hogwarts increased, though, so did Isabel's obvious depression (and what probably could have been diagnosed as PTSD, if she could have seen a therapist about it in the Muggle world without violating wizarding secrecy). Because of her Muggle-born blood status, Isabel has had difficulty in making friends in the magical world, and she isn't always sure whom she can trust. She prefers spending time with other Muggle-borns because she can relate to them more easily and sees them as less of a threat, though she branched out to spending time with some of the Spanish speakers while at Beauxbatons because she had the opportunity. During her year away from Hogwarts, Isabel began to find herself again in the relative safety of her new environment. She started to let go of the walls and rigidity that she had put up around herself and work to figure out her personality and identity beyond her responses to all the trauma. Gradually, she allowed herself to grieve the girl she could have been if she had never been a witch in the first place. While she still isn't entirely sure of herself or who she is anymore, Isabel has made progress towards embracing her life as it is and how she can make the most of it. erised: Isabel wants to have a career in some form of magical law enforcement and would see herself in such a role in the Mirror of Erised. Although far less likely to happen in actuality, she would likely see something to do with the end of prejudice against Muggles and Muggle-borns. amortentia: For Isabel, Amortentia would smell like seafood and ylang-ylang. boggart: Her Boggart would be Elaine Dupree, without a doubt. More broadly, Isabel fears that she'll somehow end up trapped in the magical world to where she can never go back to the non-magical world again. ORIGIN & RELATIONS South Kensington, London, England, UK father: Edward Hughes, 48, investment banker, Muggle mother: Uxía Moreno Andrade, 45, barrister, Muggle relatives: Extended non-magical relatives on both parents' sides pet: Sapito, approximately 7, male common toad HISTORY The beginning of Isabel's life was maybe not "normal" by everyone's definition, but it didn't seem abnormal for the environment in which she spent her early years. She was born the only child of well-off parents, a British father and a Galician mother, in one of the wealthier areas of London. In fact, she was given her name—Isabel Alejandra—in honor of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom at the time, Queen Elizabeth II, whose name at birth was Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. Despite their busy careers, Isabel's parents' worlds revolved around her. They made sure that she got the best of everything, from the nursery school she attended as a toddler to the independent primary school that she attended a few years later. Additional lessons in fencing and cello filled Isabel's calendar when she wasn't at school, and her parents had their sights set on getting her accepted into one of the country's top boarding schools for her secondary studies. Eventually, it became clear that Isabel would be going away to boarding school, albeit not exactly as her parents had planned. There had been the occasional strange occurrence here and there over the years, but Isabel and her parents had always managed to find an explanation for those happenings. Then, out of the blue, a representative from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry showed up at the family home to inform them that Isabel was a witch and had been accepted to Hogwarts on that basis. It took a lot of convincing before Isabel and her parents realized that it wasn't an elaborate prank and that there was a school of magic that was offering to educate Isabel and teach her more about how to control her abilities, mostly because it was an entirely new world for them. They didn't know any witches or wizards, yet they were being told that Isabel was one. Although hesitant about going off into the magical world, Isabel had been assured that it would be the best option for her. She went into the experience with an open mind and went off to Hogwarts for the start of her first year, though it became clear before the end of her train ride to the school that being a witch wasn't exactly all unicorns and rainbows. It turned out that unicorns were real, but there were a lot of other elements that weren't so happy. For one, there seemed to be a lot of danger. That wasn't unlike the non-magical world, but Isabel wasn't expecting that there would be actual magical criminals. What was worse for Isabel was that many of the dangers of the magical world were targeted towards other people like her, the ones who had been born to non-magical parents. She was made uncomfortable by the realization that she would face discrimination from some of her peers for her identity—or that she might even be killed, as was the case for one student who never made it off the Hogwarts Express. As time passed (and Muggle-borns kept being killed), Isabel learned to keep her head down. It didn't seem like the bravest thing for a Gryffindor to do, but she felt that she had little choice in the matter. She didn't advertise her blood status, lest she become the next victim of whoever was responsible for the string of murders. She lied to her parents in her letters home as her head became filled with tales about past Wizarding Wars and Dark Wizards with names that seemed like gibberish at first. The magical world, although an exciting prospect at first, was blatantly unsafe, and Isabel wanted nothing more as a first-year than to relinquish her magical powers and go back to being blissfully unaware of the wizarding world and its inhabitants. Relinquishing her powers was unfortunately not an option for her, no matter how many times she checked with her Head of House or the headmaster. Isabel was stuck being a witch, torn between hating Hogwarts and trying to act like she belonged there to keep herself safe. Being in survival mode already at the age of eleven took its toll on Isabel. She relished her time at home in the Muggle world with her parents, and she didn't want to have to go back to Hogwarts after each visit to London. The situation didn't get much better even once Elaine Dupree, a seventh-year Slytherin, took credit for the murders that had happened over the course of the school year; Isabel narrowly made it back to London with her life after an explosion at King's Cross. In essence, Isabel's first year at Hogwarts turned out not to be an outlier. For every bright spot, something else would inevitably happen that would make life at Hogwarts go back to being a nightmare, and that pattern continued year after year. It wore Isabel down, and her academic performance and mental health suffered considerably. There was little point in applying herself to subjects that seemed to have little benefit to her from a non-magical perspective if she might end up dead before she graduated. The exception for Isabel was Defence Against the Dark Arts, where she soaked up everything she could. If it meant the difference between life and death, then she would take it. The closest Isabel came to death was at the end of her fourth year, when Hogwarts was destroyed by Elaine Dupree, who previously had been presumed dead herself. She was late in arriving to dinner that evening, which kept her from eating the food that was being served and ending up paralyzed as a result. Isabel was obviously relieved to make it to safety, but she was left mentally scarred by everything that she had witnessed. With Hogwarts unable to reopen for the following school year and with homeschooling out of the question because of her blood status, Isabel had to work out on her own where to go next. The two most logical options for her to continue her magical education were Beauxbatons, in France, or Ilvermorny, in the United States. She chose the former, given her mother's heritage, and didn't regret it. For once, Isabel thrived during her year at Beauxbatons and was able to begin the process of healing from the traumatic experiences that she had endured while at Hogwarts. Hesitantly, Isabel returned from Beauxbatons to Hogwarts and resumed her studies at the new Lufkin Institute for Further Education (LIFE) as a NEWT-level student. By that point, she had come to the decision that she wanted to go into magical law enforcement in order to prevent more atrocities such as those she and others had experienced over the years. Since starting her NEWT studies at LIFE, Isabel has begun to work harder to improve her marks outside of Defence Against the Dark Arts. She knows that she almost certainly won't make it into Auror training, given the extremely high standards required, but she continues to explore her options for her future. SITE EVENTS REACTION As a Muggle-born, Isabel went into Hogwarts with very little knowledge of the magical world. Her introduction to Hogwarts was immediately affected by the murder of a fellow Muggle-born student who was also set to begin their first year at the school, and Isabel was terrified. Learning that she would be subjected to all sorts of discrimination through no fault of her own was a wake-up call of the worst variety, especially given her privileged upbringing in the Muggle world. With what would later be revealed as Elaine Dupree's reign of terror continuing throughout her first year, Isabel was ready to go back to her life as she had known it prior to Hogwarts and get rid of her magical abilities for good. Even the events that were supposed to be fun for the students, such as the Triwizard Tournament the following year, were pretty horrifying from the perspective of a girl who hadn't asked to be magical and didn't understand why pitting teenagers against each other at the risk of life and limb was meant to be a source of entertainment. The explosions of both foreign schools' means of transportation following the tournament, killing much of their delegations, was another reminder that the magical world was a dangerous place. Given Isabel's age at the time, she didn't really know any of the foreign students personally, but that didn't make much of a difference. The point was that innocent people had been killed for seemingly no reason, and Isabel had a hard time understanding why magic hadn't made more things danger-proof. That theme continued into the next school year, when students and some instructors from Ilvermorny came to Hogwarts after the vandalism of their school. Isabel, who hadn't had as much exposure to the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students, was interested in learning more about what it was like to be magical in the United States, but she was also fearful for what would come next. Based on the previous two years, though, she assumed that the American students would become the next target of Dark witches and wizards, which made her fearful of getting too close to anyone. Fortunately, Isabel was proven wrong. Unfortunately, that was because dragons descended on Hogsmeade; Azkaban, the wizarding prison, was destroyed, with its prisoners escaping while they had the opportunity; and an outbreak of a wizarding disease called Hag's Fever affected magical travel in and out of the British Isles. There was absolutely no chance of having a school year at Hogwarts without having it accompanied by life-altering trauma, and her third year essentially confirmed that. Being so young and not having much of an understanding of politics at that point, Isabel had been able to ignore most of the goings-on in the magical world outside of the school. Since she went back home to the Muggle world and didn't get much news from the magical world while away from it, it wasn't until after the summer of 2025 that she learned about the "fireworks malfunction" that killed many spectators, including Minister of Magic Hermione Granger, at the Quidditch league finals between Wimbourne and Yorkshire. It was yet another tragedy, but Isabel got some reassurance from the fact that it was an accident (or was publicly thought to be) and not an intentional act. Likewise, Isabel didn't know very much about Hy-Brasil and its barrier, but she knew enough to know that she really didn't want to be in a situation where she might be attacked by some sort of magical creature. That didn't happen, either, and the year seemed to be going surprisingly well. For once in her time at Hogwarts, Isabel was almost optimistic. On the evening of Elaine Dupree's attack on Hogwarts in May 2026, Isabel avoided paralysis solely because she was late to dinner. By the time that she arrived to the Great Hall, chaos had ensued, and she was able to make her way out of the castle eventually alongside many of her fellow students. During the academic year that followed, Isabel attended Beauxbatons instead of Hogwarts, where life began to improve for her. Since then, she has been trying to readjust to the "new normal" at Hogwarts, attending the new Lufkin Institute for Further Education. WANT AD
