Mid-July 2028
Things between Simon and Luna had not improved much since their altercation in June. Luna still felt frustrated with Simon’s behaviour, and with herself for not being good enough for the national team. Both were too stubborn to apologise, and had continued their shared existence in a sort of semi-formal, tentative manner. They had lapsed back into familiarity, but there was still tension between their chaste kisses, their silent dinners and their increasingly infrequent love making. Luna didn’t mention the national team to Simon again, but her behaviour became more and more withdrawn. She’d started replacing meals with lemon water, and spent her days not on the Quidditch ground at the gym, pushing herself further than before. Luna had a goal - it was a Slytherin trait to be so ambitious.
In the middle of July, Luna’s parents reached out to arrange dinner. Luna had not wanted to accept, but suspected that her parents would be even more suspicious if she refused. They’d met Simon a few times, and approved of his positive outlook. He was so different from Luna - she hadn’t wanted to share with them the demons that Simon had battled. Begrudgingly, she arranged the details for her and Simon to meet her parents at Balthazar, a French restaurant in the heart of London.
When the night came around at last, Luna and Simon arrived before her parents. ”Don’t talk about nights out with the boys,” Luna instructed tersely, tucking her blonde hair behind her ear. ”They won’t like that,” she added unnecessarily. She was dressed in a sleek black dress, her hair loose around her shoulders. She glanced at Simon as they entered the restaurant, feeling that old flutter of emotion deep in her chest. He looked gorgeous as usual, his ice blue eyes stark against his fair skin. Maybe… maybe things would be alright.

Simon never enjoyed encounters with Luna’s parents. As much as he loved Luna, her parents were his least favorite... But he’d do anything for her, especially if she asked, even eat gross French food.
Unfortunately, things between Simon and Luna were getting worse before better. They never seemed to see eye to eye. Every little thing caused bickering and fights. Simon often searched for reasons not to come back to their shared flat because he didn’t want to deal with her. That should have been a sign that they were going through a rough patch. The fact that he had to beg her to eat was also becoming exhausting, and frustrating. When he was frustrated he lacked empathy and understanding. He just couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t eat for him..or for quidditch. Simon loved Luna and yearned for their passion they once had for another, but he wasn't sure if he was grasping onto something that was already gone.
They entered the French restaurant and found their table. Simon pulled the chair out for Luna and froze to cock his head to the side, shaking his head at her with slight irritation when she unnecessarily told him not to talk about his friends to her parents. Scrunching his eye brows to the center of his forehead, he looked at her like she was stupid. ”Oh, c’mon, are you serious, Luna?” he asked in an annoyed tone, flickering his eyes at her irritatedly. As if he would want to talk about his rowdy friends with her snobby parents. Hell, he'd much rather be with the boys at that moment. Simon sat down, ”Don't pretend to eat for them by just moving your food around on your plate.” he added in the same unnecessary tone she used with him.

The night, as expected, started out increasingly tense. Luna knew that Simon enjoyed nights out with her parents about as much as she did with his family. Which was to say, not at all. But because they loved each other, they dealt with it. Or so they told one another. There was no lack of love between them, Luna would never deny that. But putting up with it... what was a whole other story. The tension between the pair had grown exponentially, with the tiniest actions grating on one anothers nerves. They'd had more rows than days in the past fortnight alone. Luna's head was on edge, and her heart pounded unsteadily in her chest.
Luna held Simon back for a moment, reminding him of his place. She shot him a glare, but before she could reply fully they were greeted by the front of house staff. They took their coats, Luna shooting daggers at Simon with her eyes. "Fuck right off, Simon," she managed to hiss before plastering a smile on her face to greet her parents. Luna sat stiffly beside Simon, already dreading the long night ahead of them. Luna's parents looked nervously between Luna and Simon - they'd always been a super charged couple. One thing that Luna and Simon never lacked was intensity, and the intensity of their awkwardness was tangible. Luna forced a deep breath through her nose, before asking how her parents had been, as if she hadn't exchanged a flurry of text messages with them in the past month.
"Simon, we hear you're playing for the Falcons now. Are you enjoying that more than the Bats?" asked Luna's father, and her stomach dropped at the mention of the Bats. Everything had seemed simpler then, even when it really never had been. So much had happened between the pair of them during their year on the Bats, the cumulation of it all being the intense love they felt between one another. Luna shot Simon a sidelong glance, nervous as to how he would respond. She knew he wasn't fond of her parents - it wasn't that they were horrible or anything, they were just terribly mundane when considering herself and her sisters.

Simon offered Mr and Mrs Treleway a kind smile when they asked him about playing for the Falcons. He missed the Bats but he enjoyed playing for the Falcons. Truthfully, he was growing a bit tired of that question.
”Yes, I’m enjoying playing for the Falcons very much. They’re a great team to play for and quickly took me under their wing..” he shared. That wasn’t technically talking about the boys right? Luna’s energy made him uncomfortable. He wasn’t sure how to act around her parents now. He took a sip of his drink to gain him a moment, swallowing as his gaze attempted to find Lunas. ”The best part has been being back in London full-time with Luna though.” Simon stated, more like he felt like he had to say it. Fuck, was he just going through the motions of love? Something deep side of his ached at his core. He wasn't quite sure what it was. The half vamps icy saucers shifted over to Luna as he squeezed her hand gently on top of the table before releasing it to drink again..
He could be a good faker when he wanted to be, he just wasn’t sure if he wanted to tonight. Simon ran a hand through his hair, knowing no amount of alcohol would get him through tonight.

Luna knew that her parents were doing their best to make polite conversation. She’d never been the most forthcoming daughter, having always kept to the bare minimum facts happening in her life. She was actually fairly surprised that they had remembered her offhand comment about Simon being signed to the Falcons. Luna watched Simon closely, but he kept his answer short and sweet. ”Literally under their wing,” said Luna after a moment with a tight smile. A quizzical look came from her father, and she expanded. ”As a falcon is a bird…” she trailed off with a sympathetic look from her mother.
Luna’s heart swelled at Simon’s comment, even though she knew the unspoken truth behind it. She really did love having him back. Though it meant witnessing them both lose control, falling back into old habits. Luna could recognise that, but she still felt powerless against it. No amount of pleading or begging or reasoning could change either of their minds. They were too stubborn for their own goods. She reached over and touched Simon’s hand lightly, giving it a squeeze. But her hand fell away when she saw the deadened look in his eyes. Her stomach slipped, and any thought of an appetite went with it. Simon squeezed her hand back, before drinking deeply.
Staring at a spot on the table, time passed so slowly. The conversation was stilted, with Luna adding next to nothing. More than once, her mother shot her a wary glance, but Luna didn’t respond. Mostly, it was mild chatter about the state of the world. About various happenings in the ministry. About holiday’s they’d taken the triplets and their younger siblings. Luna had half a mind not to order anything - her stomach was in too many knots to appreciate food. But Simon would be suspicious. So she asked for a soup, which would be easy enough to get away with. Luna took a spoonful when it arrived, and while she was certain it was bursting with flavour, she tasted nothing.
”You guys should come around and see the flat some time. It’s really lovely. Simon, hasn’t it been in your family’s possession for ages?” said Luna at last, her soup nearly untouched ten minutes later. She had watched him carefully from her periphery, and so far he didn’t seem concerned with her attitude. He was more concerned with the wine bottles that had been ordered to the table.

”Yes, the flat has been in the family for a while. My parents lived there for many years when they’d come from Sweden to London for business.” he explained, feeling more like a drone at that point. The usual social butterfly wished he could be anywhere but the French restaurant at the moment. He knew those feelings weren’t fair for Luna’s parents, because they were being pleasant. Her mother looked at him with a flicker in her eye like she knew something was wrong... Every glance at Luna made him feel like he was walking on eggshells. The intense looks as he spoke to her parents, he could feel her eyes burning into the side of his face.
When the wine came he was eternally grateful. Hopefully it would loosen up Luna and they could go home and laugh about how horrible the dinner was. Simon learned that he hated French food, resulting to forcing down bread and wine instead. The waiter appeared with a fresh basket of warm breads and butter, placing it on the table in front of Luna.
Simons glance fell to Luna, noticing she hadn't touched the soup sitting in front of her. It was obvious due to the settled layer on top. He leaned in to whisper into her ear, not caring that her parents were across the table from them. His hand squeezed her thigh, ”You aren’t eating..” he grumbled with an irritated sigh. Simon took a sip of wine as his eyes looked her over expectantly. "C'mon. Eat. Please, Luna. You aren’t going to feel well." he urged above a whisper, a pleading look in his eyes.

The tension between the pair of them could be cut with a butter knife. They lapsed into an uncomfortable silence as the waiters brought wine to the table and Simon drank eagerly. Their main courses arrived and only errant chatter had started up, failed to catch, and petered out. Luna's parents exchanged a confused glance before eying the young couple before them. Luna, however, paid them no mind.
Simon's whispered urging only irritated Luna further. He looked her over expectantly, and she returned his gaze with a frosty glare. Her stomach twisted at the concern in his eyes, but she was just so annoyed. Simon could do whatever he wanted and get everything he wanted. A gorgeous flat, a spot on the national team, to be welcomed back into the British and Irish League with open arms after a scandal. And Luna, for all her hard work and determination, could say little for herself.
Luna dropped her spoon with a clatter, and rose abruptly from her seat. Her napkin fluttered to the floor as she turned on her heel without a word and stomped from the restaurant. She didn't care about the looks she was getting from the rest of the patrons, or the glares from the restaurant staff. She flung open the doors and stomped into the late summer rain. She huffed out a heavy breath, trying to calm herself but it was fruitless. Luna paused, looking down both sides of the street. It was crowded with umbrellas and tourists shuffling along, trying to get to their next destination. Why did she feel like this, all the time? It had never been so bad before.

Simon knew he shouldn't have said anything. There was a little voice inside his head that warned him that pestering her in front of her parents about her eating habits wasn't a smart choice. This time when his mouth opened it was more of a knee jerk reaction. A pinch of guilt nipped at his gut as she got up from the table abruptly. Simon sighed, eyes flickering over to her parents awkwardly with an apologetic smile before pushing out his seat and following after Luna in a rush. Simon could feel eyes on him as he usually did when they fought in public. Something that seemed to happen more and more often which was soul crushing.
"Luna!" he bellowed after her blonde head bobbing in the crowd on the sidewalk, his anger boiling. Simon hated that she always ran away when she was pissed off at him. He'd never run away from her. Every step she continued to walk from him only made his frustration grow.
As the rain started to pick up, he could hardly see her snaking her way through the sea of umbrellas. Simon pushed past tourists, not caring that he was being rude. He didn't want to lose sight of Luna. "Luna please! Stop!" he called after her, a hint of desperation, his face red. The half vamps feet sloshed in the puddles as he finally started to catch up with her after making his way through the crowd like a torpedo.

Luna pushed through the crowd before coming to an abrupt halt. She hadn’t expected Simon to follow her, only to take her absence as his own cue to leave. But she heard him calling, and she turned, ducking out of the way of the oncoming pedestrians. Rain streamed down her face in rivulets, plastering her blonde hair to her forehead, a wild sort of look in her eyes as she faced Simon. Pain blistered through her as someone knocked against her side, almost throwing her off balance, but her attention was trained solely on her boyfriend.
”You just don’t get it!” said Luna, her voice raised over the din of pattering rain and the rumble of conversation. ”You don’t have to work hard for anything, Simon! Everything is handed to you! Your flat! Your money! Your life! Your position!” Luna swiped the water from her eyes, anger making her spiral. ”You don’t know failure. You don’t know what it’s like to work so hard, your entire being changes. And then you don’t even reach your goal. No matter how hard I try, it’s never enough!” she shouted, hysteria creeping into her voice.
”All I’ve ever wanted is to play Quidditch. And I can’t even make the national team while you gallivant around, poisoning yourself and partying every night. For fucks sake, you had nothing to answer for when you were shipped off to Sweden! And I have worked so tirelessly, so endlessly, and it amounts to nothing. Why?” Luna’s eyes were burning as the rancid jealousy spewed from her. ”Why do you get to decide what’s best for me when you barely know what hardship is?”

At long last Luna finally screeched to a halt. Simons heart beat out of his chest, fuming with anger from having to him run after her. He quickly regretted chasing after Luna after the words that sprewed from her mouth. The young mans face twisted with confusion, eyes creasing at the center of his forehead. She started by telling him he’d never had to work for anything in his life. Hurtful words continued to fall from Lunas mouth as the rain started to pour over the city. Suddenly Simon didn’t care about the rain because his heart was being ripped from his chest. How could his beloved girlfriend resent him so harshly? It made him wonder how long she felt this way.
Tears prickled his eyes. In that moment he was grateful it was raining so it wasn’t as obvious but little did he know it was obvious with Lunas hysterics. ”What is wrong with you? Where is all of this bitterness coming from?” he asked acidly, expression faltering as his icy saucers watched her intensely. Prepared for more fuckery to come out of her mouth.
Simon was speechless as he marinated in her words, unsure what he was supposed to do next. After everything she said, he surely didn't want to go home with her, either. He wanted to get back at her because his feelings were hurt and she embarrassed him in front of her parents. Biting the inside of his cheek, he ruffled a hand through his soaked hair as he stared at her. Simon opened his mouth without thinking, ”Have you considered maybe you don’t make the teams because you’re not good enough..” he stated harshly with an even tone, more to piss her off since had nothing to lose.

As her blows landed, Luna didn't feel any sort of smugness. She didn't feel much of anything at all. That didn't stop her from spewing such vitriol, which Simon slung right back at her. She was glad it was raining, glad that the tears leaking from her eyes were masked by it. A sob bubbled in her chest, but she stifled it, determined not to give Simon any hint of how much she was hurting inside.
Distantly, Luna knew her anger was misplaced. And distantly, she also knew that Simon reacted badly when he was hurt. But his next words stung, and Luna's temper soared. "You know what? Fuck you, Simon. Fuck you and your perfect life. Fuck you for getting whatever you want because your parents are rich. I've outflown you on the pitch and you know it. So you can shove your unwanted opinion up your ass!" she yelled, her heart beat raising. "I'll stay with Evy tonight," she added bitterly, turning on her heel and stomping away. Half of her wanted Simon to call her back, to resolve what was going on in her mind to make her act like a child. But half of her wanted him to let her walk away, out of the conversation and maybe even out of his life.

Simons jaw clenched, gnawing on his lip as he watched the hateful words flood from Lunas lips. He knew he shouldn't have stooped to her level but there was nothing else he could do when he was seeing red. How could someone he love so deeply make him feel so terrible? Every day it was becoming more difficult to remember the good times, to remember why they bothered to be with each other when all they seemed to do was fight. Simon couldn't remember the last time Luna looked at him with love in her eyes.
Luna started to walk away and he stomped after her before stopping in front of her, eyes boring into her like daggers as he searched for the correct words. Nothing came up. Simon was too pissed off and caught off guard by his girlfriends pent up jealousy. People continued to bump past them with umbrellas, rain drops pelting down his face and drenching his hair and clothing. He was unable to hide the emotional turmoil he was experiencing any longer, "I don't know what delusional world you live in to think my life is picture perfect but my sister died. Imagine losing your twin. You'll feel nothing pain, remorse, and a void that will never be filled again.." Simon spewed, salty tears falling down his cheeks as they mixed with raindrops. "So- Fuck off, Luna." he stated bitterly before turning on his heel and walking in the opposite direction of the restaurant. He needed to get away from her, it was exhausting fighting and being humiliated in public all the time.
