▲ October 16th, 2028 Why couldn’t she have gotten a nice curse from an ancient mummy’s pinky ring instead of a concussive punch from a security troll that had the same intelligence as the mouse that occasionally called the pantry in her apartment its home? Despite being seven months out from her injury, the doctors at St. Mungo’s had diagnosed her with persistent post-concussion syndrome. Something that should have been saved for the non-magique instead of for her. The headaches were infrequent enough that she forgot they even existed, only coming back with a nasty vengeance whenever she tried to do too much at once. So that meant Gringotts had continued to bench her, because sending her back out to work was honestly too dangerous. Dahlia was frustrated. The bank’s idea of light duty was running paperwork or sitting in long forgotten storerooms looking for artifacts that may or may not exist and were never correctly catalogued. They had sent her to France a few times, which was a nice distraction until she realized it was because they needed a native speaker to handle translation and whatnot. Which was great and all, but her brain absolutely did not want to help her out most of the time. Their newest task was having her bring extra materials to Hogwarts for the cursebreakers that had taken up instructor positions for the new trainees being taught there. It was better than sitting around waiting for her headaches and brain fog to go away though. Today was just another one of those days, where Gringotts told her to drop off paperwork and a box of formerly cursed Roman coins for Archer to go over in his class. She quite liked the man, and he had been one of Rhys’s partners over the years. But nothing was more embarrassing than walking up to a class full of trainees and handing everything over, especially as a full-fledged cursebreaker. She was supposed to be traveling the world and crawling through caves or tombs! Not this. Still, she had to do what was medically best for her. And apparently that was this. As she left the classroom behind, she was essentially done for the day. Another headache had started to form as she talked to Archer, his class relatively unruly and their voices piercing. She still couldn’t focus on more than one thing at a time, seemingly one of the triggers for a concussion induced spin out. Making it outside of the building and to a bench, the cold, October air helped a bit, but she still felt the pounding ache in the side of her head where the troll had clocked her. Sitting down, she closed her eyes and rubbed at her temples, hoping that would dull it enough so that she could at least get home and take the medicine for it. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Esther had just concluded her morning rounds in the Medical Wing, mostly supervising trainees to tend to students who were admitted with various mundane magical maladies. These days, her shifts were filled predominately with paperwork and managing the other nurses and student placements. Every day was like Groundhog Day. She’d seen more broken bones from Quidditch mishaps, splinchings and cases of Bowtruckle Flu than she could count, and nothing could really surprise her these days. Nothing ever happened that could pull her out of this profound feeling of boredom she was currently experiencing with her life. She had retreated to the staff room for a brief respite and enjoyed a soothing cup of herbal tea that she wished was something more exciting. The most riveting part of her day was bumping into colleagues who liked to share interesting gossip about their or their student's lives, or who would recap recent episodes of The Alley with her. That’s how bad things were. Esther had even grown bored of chasing one-night stands since that didn’t serve to validate her like it used to, most of her peers were settling down and it felt like she couldn’t find anything to hold on to that gave her any real purpose. It was all very snooze-worthy right now. Break time was coming to an end, so with a dramatic sigh to herself she got up and made her way back out to the grounds. As she walked up the hall advancing towards Archie's classroom, she noted that he would have a class right now. He was a good friend - one of her closest these days - and their little casual FWB arrangement had somehow managed to sustain itself without any kind of unwanted complexities which was impressive in itself. She wondered to herself whether he would want to grab a drink with her after work, and as she thought about it, her curiosity was sparked by a young, attractive woman leaving his classroom. Walking at a similar pace just a few steps behind her, Esther, desperate for any kind of mental stimulation, started imagining the many scenarios in which this person was visiting the school and this specific classroom. Her mind filled up with ideas that could have been a plot line fit for a show like The Alley. Maybe she was a spy with unethical motives masquerading as a new professor and was planning on infiltrating the school? Maybe Archie lived a secret double life and had a plethora of other flings that he juggled between the time he spent with Esther? A slight smile tugged at her lips as she thought about the potential drama. Her eyes still fixed on the back of the brunette as she walked outside, Esther observed her sitting down and rubbing her temples. Suddenly, she snapped out of her daydream and fell back into professional mode. She detoured from her path back to the Medical Wing and approached the woman instead, squatting down to meet her eye level on the bench. “Excuse me. Are you alright?” she asked gently, noting that she most certainly did not look it. “You’re not going to pass out, are you?”

▲ The not so fun part about the headaches was that they tended to make her zone out while she was dealing with them. Her medicine pulled her right out of that, fixing it up rather quickly. Except she didn’t have any one her, which was a huge misstep on her part. The circular motion of her thumbs across her temples somewhat helped, yet not every headache was easily minimized by it. If she took too long, making the jump back home was going to leave her worse off. Eyes still locked shut as she tried to reduce the pain in her head, she heard someone get relatively close to her, and then ask her if she was going to be alright, adding a second question about whether or not she was going to pass out. That was certainly up for debate. What a fun trip to St. Mungo’s again that would be, if she keeled over mid-disapparition and ended up splinching herself as well. ”Hmm?” she hummed out as her thumbs continued in their circular motion, only looking when she finally felt like she had sufficiently gotten to a point where she could slow down. ”Maybe,” Dahlia answered the second question, almost indignantly. It was hard to not be in a foul mood when she felt like this, and it wasn’t the fault of the woman in front of her. But the odds of standing up right now and almost immediately falling over were possible. There had been brief periods of vertigo as well. ”Headache from a concussion. That is it,” Dahlia kept it brief, still slightly rude. She couldn’t help it considering the circumstances. The woman had stooped into a squat, which was something she hadn’t expected a total stranger to do. Even her tone was calm and gentle. ”Are you a professor?” she asked, assuming based on how old she looked, she couldn’t have been a student. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

The woman’s hum and somewhat terse response drew a sympathetic, understanding nod from Esther. She eventually provided an explanation for her discomfort, her words clipped and succinct. "Headache from a concussion. That is it," she stated, her demeanour still somewhat curt. Esther knew better than to take offence, though. She had seen her fair share of patients in distress, and any hint of rudeness was usually just an obvious sign of discomfort. "I see," Esther responded with a gentle tone, acknowledging her straightforwardness. When she finally looked up, Esther seemed to inspect her, looking intently into her eyes to see how dilated her pupils were. Just from this very short interaction and limited observations, Esther could sense that she needed proper attention immediately. Her question took the blonde by surprise, though, and she chuckled softly, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "No, dear, I'm not a professor," she replied. "I am the Head Healer here, though. Must be your lucky day, huh?” There was a hint of sarcasm - she knew that not everyone liked being fussed over and now it was Esther’s obligation and duty to make sure this person got proper care! With a gesture toward the hospital wing merely moments away, she continued, "How about we head over to the wing so I can take a better look at you? Do you think you could manage that?” She stood upright and held out her arm preparing to assist her if needed. dahlia jade greyback

▲ Just listening to the woman talk, Dahlia could tell that she was trying to be helpful. It must have looked bad if someone was so willing to stop and act like this. Somehow, she had managed to hide the uglier parts of the concussion when around her family, acting like everything was better when it really wasn’t. Rhys would have killed her if he knew she was trying to get back out on jobs while still suffering from prolonged headaches months later. The bank, strangely enough, probably wouldn’t care too much. As long as she was ‘medically clear’, they would give her assignments. There came a point where waiting any longer would only be detrimental to her career. She couldn’t risk it all over a couple of headaches a week. Dahlia blinked a few times when the woman stated she was the Head Healer at the school. Now it all made sense. She was obligated to stop and help, and the offer was to head to the hospital wing for a check-up. Considering the amount of time she had spent in Mungo’s over the last few months, it should have caused her to recoil. Another healer, another round of medicine that only worked half the time. Why wasn’t there a spell or potion that could put her brain back to the way it was before? Thinking about her options, going with the healer or trying to get home for her medicine, Dahlia stared at the woman’s arm that was being offered to assist her. Despite what she wanted to do, which was to leave and suffer at home, she knew the smarter choice was to accept the help. This sort of thing wasn’t supposed to be messed with, and with it lingering all these months later, clearly, she wasn’t better yet. ”Okay,” Dahlia finally accepted, pressing down with her hands on the bench to help push herself up, the vertigo thankfully wasn’t there. If it had been, she would have been sideways already. She waved off the arm, knowing she could make it as long as they walked slowly. ”I forgot the pills the healers at the hospital gave me…usually it passes after an hour or so…” she explained slowly. The pounding on all sides of her skull hadn’t relented yet, but the longer it went on, the less intense it felt. Obviously that wasn’t the case, and it was more likely she had just grown accustomed to the pain. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

As the woman seemed to contemplate her choices, Esther offered her a supportive smile, realizing the internal struggle she must have been enduring - she could relate. There was a reason why people said that doctors make the worst patients But her acceptance and the slow, careful rise from the bench were met with her approval. She understood the importance of maintaining a steady pace, given the circumstances. "Don't worry. We'll take it nice and slow," Esther assured her, showing no signs of impatience. As she explained the situation with her medication, Esther nodded in understanding, then stood by her side, ready to assist her on the short walk to the hospital wing. "It's not unusual for these headaches to persist. I’m Esther, by the way." In just a few short moments they had entered the building. “It’s quite rare that we have adult patients these days,” Esther told her almost excitedly, “concussions however… Well those are excessively common.” As they proceeded down the aisle passing rows of hospital beds on either side, Esther made a nod towards a LIFE student with bandages covering his head like a crown. “Bludger right to the back of the skull,” she advised her matter-of-factly. “And this one -” she then gestured to a young witch in the bed opposite “-fell off her broom and landed face-first on a gargoyle. I had a similar accident at her age. Never been very fond of flying since then.” Her constant chatter served a purpose in that hopefully it would distract her new patient from the pain and keep her focused on standing upright. As they reached the back of the room where it was more private, Esther motioned to an empty bed and ushered the woman onto it. “Here, have a seat.” Turning around, she summoned a cart that had a plethora of medical supplies stashed in it then pulled a curtain closed. “Care to tell me how you sustained your injury? Out of curiosity mostly… I doubt it would make much difference to your treatment.”

▲ Walking slowly and carefully had become somewhat of a specialty of Dahlia's. Not only because it was absolutely required when trying to avoid toppling over from dizziness, but also while creeping through tombs and other dangerous places. She nodded her head slowly to show that she understood, not wanting to shake it too much and exacerbate the headache. Any wrong move now would make it worse. "Dahlia," she gave her name in turn. They had entered a building, which she could only assume was the hospital wing. Esther was explaining that concussions were common, giving examples as they walked by several students that were supposedly suffering from them. Dahlia didn't see how the severity of her own accident and those of the poor students laying in their beds were comparable, but she understood that the healer was trying to make her feel better about the injury. When it came to workplace accidents, this was easily the best outcome for a cursebreaker. All of her body parts were still usable and attached, and she was alive. Eventually they came upon an empty bed and Dahlia was instructed to sit down. She did so, thinking of the best way to explain how this all came to be. "A troll punched me in the head," she stated, though immediately realized she should elaborate. "A security troll. At Gringotts." And that made her sound like she was trying to rob the place. Which was sort of funny, considering cursebreakers were probably the most apt at successfully doing so. "I am a cursebreaker." Piece by piece, she hoped that made it better. Observing the cart of medical supplies that was drifting over towards them, Dahlia let out a long sigh. More exams. "It happened in March...if that matters." It probably did. Now she was going to have to let the healers at St. Mungo's know about this. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Dahlia's explanation of her injury elicited an intrigued response from Esther. "A troll punched me in the head," Her brows arched in surprise. "A security troll. At Gringotts." Esther's disbelief deepened as Dahlia added more details. When she eventually revealed her occupation, Esther let out a bemused exhale as the pieces came together to paint a picture of the extent of the incident that occurred. She sat in a stool beside the bed and adjusted it higher to be at the eye level of her taller-than-average patient. “Well, that explains why I saw you leaving Professor Vector’s classroom,” she resolved out loud. “I do hope that these kinds of meetings are the extent of your work tasks at the moment.” Esther hated to lecture adults about their activities, and she was confident that Dahlia would have been told the same by the medical staff at Mungo’s, but she was required under her obligations as a Healer to repeat the message. “Sustaining another mild traumatic brain injury in the state you’re in could lead to very dire consequences for you.”Esther rolled herself forward to very close proximity to the woman and prepared to examine her more closely. Dahlia said that the injury had been sustained many months ago and the blonde nodded, noting that it had been some time, which was unsurprising given the severity of the injury itself. “Look straight ahead, please. Eyes open nice and wide -” She would look to inspect the size of Dahlia’s pupils, whether her eyelids appeared to be droopy, or for any atypical eye movements. “Do you have any symptoms right now other than the headache? Dizziness? Light sensitivity? Any issues with memory loss?”

▲ It sounded like her explanation of how the injury was received made sense. There had been a few times throughout this whole process where getting to the details was sometimes hard. Between her difficulty focusing due to the concussion and sometimes forgetting the English words for certain things, the process of repeating over and over again to various doctors was exhausting. Esther here was fairly casual about it all, and Dahlia could only assume it was because the nurse was used to dealing with bullshit from the students. Her own nurse at Beauxbatons had been a mean old bat, always making it seem like handing over the monthly wolfsbane potions was a favor and not a requirement. That whole experience had made her distrust doctors up until Gringotts required her to go for work. While Esther was getting herself situated for what Dahlia assumed would be another thorough examination, she talked about how not receiving another head injury would be for the best. Dahlia nodded her head to show that she knew that. ”They have not sent me back into the field yet…” It was hard not to sound disgruntled, but it still came out that way. She wanted in on the action, especially right now with so many cursebreakers out with injuries. Becoming yet another statistic being held in a holding pattern by the bank. ”Only paperwork and dropping things off here…”Listening to the nurse’s instructions, Dahlia opened her eyes as wide as she could. ”Right now?” she repeated back. There was the aforementioned headache, of course, and for a moment, she thought that the dizziness was maybe coming back. After she had sat down on the bench though, that went almost completely away. ”The noise from the classroom made it hard to focus. That made the headache come back,” she explained, hoping that her eyes weren’t showing anything else. One of the healers at the hospital had caught her right after a spell of vertigo, and apparently could see it this way. ”Sometimes I am dizzy. Not today though. The headaches always come from loud noises or focusing on too many things at the same time…” She already knew that this was going to have to go back to the healer she had been seeing at the hospital. He was what the non-magique called a ‘neurologist’. Somehow knew the innerworkings of the brain. That was all science that she didn’t understand. Disabling curses on ancient objects and dodging pitfalls was more her thing, after all. ”I am a werewolf too, if that matters,” Dahlia added, almost as an afterthought. She didn’t think it did, as none of the previous healers had really cared. Except when the full moon came around, of course. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Dahlia explained that she’d been relegated to light duties while she recovered from the concussion, and Esther nodded along, noting the woman’s disgruntled tone as verification that she wasn’t too happy about it. Curse breakers were in a league of their own in her opinion. In just the couple of years during her training at St Mungo’s over a decade ago, she had come across quite a few in the context of their work-related injuries, and they were all very committed to their jobs, tough as nails, and also generally super stubborn. Esther thought to herself that she would probably relish an opportunity to take justified time off of work to sit on the couch and simply watch the tv guilt-free. She continued to examine Dahlia’s eye movements while she listened attentively to the witch explaining that student chatter had triggered her headache. “Well, a room full of teenagers is enough to give anyone a headache,” she joked deadpan, another attempt at taking her mind off of the severity of it all despite them both knowing full well that it was quite bad that it had gone on for so long. Finally, Esther took her attention away from the woman, making a mental note that there were no additional signs of immediate concern, and went back to her cart full of supplies where she began to rifle through various vials of potions. Dahlia added that she was a werewolf, which in Esther’s mind made her even more of an interesting subject. She had been manifesting even a hint of excitement in her day and now here she was with an adult werewolf cursebreaker with a troll-related head injury and a French accent fresh out of visiting her secret casual lover’s classroom. You couldn’t make this stuff up. It was glorious! “Not unless you’re planning on skipping your Wolfsbane any time soon,” she replied, giving the woman a reassuring smile. “If you consent, I can cast a simple pain relieving spell on you, and then you can wait here for awhile until I think it’s safe for you to travel home.” She then handed Dahlia one of the vials, “You can take this Dittanny potion when you get home if your headache flares up again. I hope you understand that I'll have to inform the healers at St Mungo’s about your visit today.” dahlia jade greyback

▲ A snort came out of her at Esther's comment about teenagers. Maybe she shouldn't have felt so bad about getting the headache after all, especially if it was inevitable under these circumstances. How so many of her colleagues managed to shift from almost complete solitary work to teaching was still a mystery to her. She'd questioned Rhys several times on it, but he seemed to enjoy it from what she could tell. Then again, he also had an actual child so she supposed it was different. Even easier, maybe. "It is not just children, but yes...they do," Dahlia added after Esther turned back to her cart to look for something else. The crowded entry hall of Gringotts had driven her mad with headaches a few times over the past few months, though just like today, it typically dissipated with a quiet room and medicine. She just happened to have forgotten the latter, assuming things would be fine. That was a mistake she wasn't going to repeat again. Mentioning her lycanthropy had become somewhat of a habit when it came to healers, only because when her accident first happened it had been right before a full moon and no one had her condition listed down. That had almost been a mistake. It wasn't like it was some open secret that she was a werewolf. "No. I do not trust the wolf enough to not take it," she responded proudly. There were some of her kind that thought otherwise, but being frank and positive about it did wonders for the perception of them in general. Causing terror seemed to benefit others though... Listening to Esther talk about the next steps, Dahlia accepted the potion vial and stared into it. It looked similar in color to some of the others she'd been forced to drink over the months. There were so many that Dittanny sounded familiar but she wasn't sure. "I am fine with both," she agreed. That was the nature of this whole ordeal after all. Fishing through her pocket, she produced a business card of one of the healers she had been seeing at the hospital, and held it out for Esther. Keeping it on her had been a smart choice. "This is the specialist I have been seeing. That should make it faster." And would guarantee that she would have another follow-up within the week probably. More poking and prodding, amongst other things. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Moving closer again to the woman, Esther retrieved her wand from her apron pocket and rested it on her knee while she continued to consult with her about her injury. Dahlia explained that she didn’t trust to not take her Wolfsbane ahead of the full moon, and Esther nodded and smiled at her in approval. Lycanthropy had always been a special interest of hers throughout her career, and she was a keen advocate for reducing the stigma attached to it, and providing equitable access to healthcare for all werewolves - or anyone with any kind of non-human attributes in the magical world for that matter. Maybe that was because her best friend was a werewolf, or that she was a half-breed herself. Regardless, it was another factor that made her want to ensure that Dahlia was treated with respect. Dahlia passed her a card with her St Mungo’s contact’s details on it and Esther placed it on the cart with her notebook making a mental note to use it as a training exercise for one of her placements to follow up on. “That’s very helpful. Thank you.”A good portion of the job had to do with efficient administration, and tasks like this liaising with other medical institutions were good practice for a healer in training. “Alright, well you can close your eyes for a moment if you like,” she told her as she raised her wand. “It won’t make much of a difference, but some people find the eye contact a bit awkward.” That was her choice, and Esther offered that option with an air of playfulness. Since Dahlia had consented to some temporary relief, she proceeded to motion her wand above her head and muttered an incantation, performing a pretty standard healing spell. “There, all done!” she declared, “Let’s give it fifteen minutes and then we can see if you’re ready to go home.” She would sit with her during that time, if Dahlia wanted to, which could give Esther the opportunity to monitor her progress some more. Sometimes a simple conversation and observation of the exchange could be a better indication of somebody’s well-being more than a series of complex tests could! dahlia jade greyback

▲ Making the entire healing procedure quick and easy was sort of her thing these days. Fighting the people that were trying to help wouldn't get her anywhere, and she had resigned herself to the fact that this wasn't simple anymore. Had this been a minor concussion, one that had cleared up like it was supposed to have in only a few short months, then she probably would have been a bit pushier during her appointments. After coming to the realization that this was going to be closer to a year, she'd all but given up in speeding it along. Closing her eyes, Dahlia listened to the healing spell being cast. Her head always felt a little funny during and the moments after, a positive side effect to curing the aggravating headaches that had been plaguing her. At this point, she probably should have learned it herself. The best kind of self-medication out there, aside from getting piss-drunk after a successful job. She sort of agreed with Esther on the eye contact being awkward, though that came more from her general distrust of others. Obviously, there was nothing untrustworthy about the Hogwarts nurse, or any healer for that matter, but it was hard to shake old habits. They were all here for her benefit after all. The fuzzy warmth of the spell encapsulated her entire head, and she could feel the headache start to recede. Having a quiet area to do so definitely helped as well. Opening her eyes again, she leaned back onto the bed and got into a comfortable position. This was way more comfortable than what St. Mungo's had, somehow. "Thank you. I imagine students get into lots of accidents?" Dahlia commented, remembering the two she had seen on her way in. Quidditch aside, children were absolutely stupid with magic. Some of the things she had done in defense following her turning had absolutely been reprehensible. No doubt that added to the fear and anger her classmates had harbored towards her. Everything was better when she was fatherless. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Esther raised an eyebrow in a playful manner as Dahlia mentioned students getting into accidents. "Oh, believe me, this school should come with a hazard warning.” The combination of hormones, magic, and teenage rebellion was a potent mix, but even still, she’d seen it all by now and there wasn’t a lot that could surprise her when it came to the sorts of wacky situations that some of the students often found themselves in. “Broken bones, potion explosions, misfired spells, pranks gone wrong…” she trailed off momentarily as she spun on her chair to organise a couple of objects on the cart behind her. Even as she rested in one place in order to keep her patient occupied for a short while, her busy hands were on autopilot. "And let me tell you, you've got some competition when it comes to the award for most daring accidents. These kids can be impressively creative when it comes to finding trouble. It's a wonder they manage to graduate in one piece, really."Turning her attention back to the young woman, she sighed dramatically through a silly grin “Never a dull moment in the world of magical mishaps,” she announced, her tone painted with sarcasm. She imagined the role of a curse-breaker was probably a lot more exciting given the dangerous risks involved. The ones she knew were highly intelligent with a plethora of skills across a broad range of subjects. Physically, they were in pretty good shape. Plus they were definitely brave. But she supposed the grass was always greener for a lot of people. “Anyway, tell me a bit about yourself Dahlia. Did you go to Beauxbatons?” The guess was a fairly safe one due to detecting an accent, but she could still be wrong. Esther changed the subject in order to get her talking a little, so she could gauge whether or not it looked like she was having any trouble with conversation due to the headache. It should be wearing off by now if her spell had worked. And Esther’s healing spells had always worked up until now! dahlia jade greyback

▲ It was interesting getting another perspective on Hogwarts, especially in the realm of injuries. She had heard stories from her siblings and colleagues about various adventures and mishaps inside the castle, yet never put two and two together with how dangerous some of them could be for literal children. Her own scale for danger was seriously dulled by her career, so the exploits of magical school children had never seemed nearly as bad. Except she also had coke to realize that kids were stupid and would do outrageous things for attention. Merlin, she had done so a few times herself before she had become a large, killer dog once a month. Esther's examples made her smile a bit, mostly because she had managed a mismatch of them more in adulthood than she had in school. Broken fingers especially, all of which were quickly cured with the simplest of healing charms. "It is no wonder so many are studying to become cursebreakers...they are thrill seekers." And she really couldn't blame that for them in the slightest. Cursebreakers fell into three categories, typically: those that wanted to travel and see history in person, the ones that wanted a level of danger to their work and found intrigue in the cursed objects that they dealt with, and those like herself, lost souls that had wandered into a field that worked perfectly for them if they happened to disappear. Now that she had been benched for so long, Dahlia was starting to realize she enjoyed the more dangerous aspects of the job. But she also knew there was more to life than legal grave robbing. "I did," Dahlia responded to the question about her schooling as she found a comfortable position for her head on the bed's pillow. The fuzziness of the spell was still swirling around, but like usual, it felt like a warm hug. "From what I have seen, I think I would have been more accepted here, at Hogwarts. Beauxbatons still has a long way to go." She couldn't even complain as an alumni, because she was essentially a nobody. They only put up with her because she was orphaned during the summer between her fourth and fifth year, and the optics of helping the newly minted werewolf looked good to the public. Her classmates had treated her horribly. "And you went to Ilvermorny?" It wasn't exactly uncommon to find Americans these days, especially around the school. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
