"Hi, Olivia. I'm Miss Taylor."
The seven-year-old girl who sat on the opposite side of the table from her and her colleague had skin a few shades darker than hers, with her hair tied in elastic bands adorned with pink plastic balls at either end. She was hugging a small teddy bear to her chest, one that she had been given when she had been taken to the Woolworth Building to be interviewed.
"I know you just met with Miss Gabby here," she noted, "and she thought that I might be able to help out." Taylor was more accustomed to using Legilimency when the person against whom she was using it wasn't as willing, but she wasn't usually looking across a table at a mute first-grader, either. Unfortunately, kids didn't always have the choice about whether or not they ended up witnessing crimes. "Do you know what a Legilimens is?"
Olivia bobbed her head timidly, but it was enough that it was clear that she understood.
"Well, I'm a Legilimens, so what I'm going to do is look through your thoughts to see what you saw and heard last night, okay?" Taylor began, continuing to speak after Olivia had nodded again. "The best part is that you don't have to do anything," she added with a smile. "Just pretend we're having a staring contest." It would be easier for both of them if they could maintain eye contact, so why not make it fun? "Ready? One, two, three…"
"Legilimens!"
