”Protection orders, educational standards, the board and I wish to make some changes with the Ministry education standards. Hopefully I can get the Minister to move on education changes, since according to him we don’t have a crisis” Sounded like the typical stuff that a normal Headmaster would go and talk to the Minister about. But Walton knew better than to believe that these were the only reasons the Headmaster was going to the Ministry. There was definitely an ulterior motive behind it all. "I quite agree with you about the fact that the Minister thinks that there isn't a crisis going on. He is rather daft." He would have to keep a close eye on his informants that were within the Ministry, even though they both were part of the International Aurors and skilled at occlumency, but one could never be to careful. They had been able to feed him information as to the going ons at the Ministry of Magic, especially when the Headmaster appeared.
Walton took his gaze off of the Headmaster as the portrait shouted at him. It never really bothered him that this previous headmaster hated him. It hated him for no other reason than the fact that Walton had been in the office longer for more time than that previous headmaster had been, and he wasn't even a headmaster. "Apparently so. He once told me why he hates me. And it is all for the simple fact that I have spent more time in this office than he ever did. Oh and also because the last time he got like this I went ahead did this." Walton casually flicked his wand and cast a quick silencing charm and also a conjuration spell that covered the portrait in a set of heavy curtains. "I don't think he likes anyone all that much." Walton sat back in his chair wondering just a little bit as to what direction their conversation would go next.

The reply Walton gave back to Burt when he answered him about the question of what he was meeting the Minister about satisfied Burt enough to a point. He respected the man, and liked him to a point or he would have never promoted him but he did not care one bit for the man’s overreaching questions. He knew that since he was an International Auror as well that this was going to be the way he was, but Burt would not tolerate it for much longer. Such questions could lead to him discovering very confidential information which could endanger Burt’s goals and plans, something that Walton would not want to do. He looked up at once when he heard the shouting from the portrait, who was shouting at Walton, then turned his gaze back to the Professor as he spoke. He raised an eyebrow at first about how the man did not like Walton; because he spent more time in this office then did, alive. A little smirk played on his lips as Walton put a silencing charm on the portrait, which pleased Burt very much. If Walton hadn’t done it, Burt would have done so himself, he did not care for that previous Headmaster.
He thought it was a stupid thing for him to be angry at considering the guy had at least been a Headmaster, Walton was not Headmaster. Until the start of this term he was just a Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, he had limited power in Hogwarts even if he was an International Auror. Everyone had limited power in Hogwarts to Burt’s view, he controlled the levers of power in this castle, he was the Headmaster not anyone else. ” A stupid thing considering you’re not a Headmaster, and he was. I don’t care for him either, wish I could take his portrait off the wall”said Burt giving a little mumble growl that he could not do that, the magic was too strong and prevented that from ever happening. He leaned back in his chair as well and looked up at the ceiling staring at it as he thought about something. He was thinking of how he would attempt to smuggle such a dark item in the castle when he had an International Auror present who was very curious about Burt, or at least it seemed like that. He made things more complicated...can’t I ever catch a damn break thought Burt he closed his eyes and thought through different scenarios of smuggling the item into the castle. Taking the chance of breaking the enchantments to do so would attract to much attention, especially now, so he needed a new way. Vince will have a way, there is always a way thought Burt he opened his eyes and moved his gaze back to the Professor in front of him. ” Any students you feel need to be kept an extra eye on?” asked Burt. He was thinking if Walton had a theory of a student being the mastermind then he might have some students he suspects or thinks should be watched.

”A stupid thing considering you’re not a Headmaster, and he was. I don’t care for him either, wish I could take his portrait off the wall” Walton held back a laugh. "I have been in here more than he was simply because he never liked being in his office, and most of the time it wasn't by choice headmaster." He could remember well all of the times that he had been here. And it was all thanks to his ability at doing very well in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Representatives from ministries, and schools had come here to interview him and this was the office that those interviews had taken place in. Walton never liked having to come here, for interviews. But in his seventh year he went ahead and accepted the offer to go and get a mastery in defense against the dark arts over in america. And not many people knew that.
”Any students you feel need to be kept an extra eye on?” Well now they were getting some where. He had a couple of ideas but there was one person who stuck out the most to him, and it wasn't because of how they were acting for the had always acted like they were better than everyone else and was one of those all prim and proper people. No, what caught his attention was the fact that his patronus had completely ignored said person. "Well I do have one person in particular that kind of sticks out, and not because of how they have been acting. It was in the first class of the year. I choose to make sure that all of the seventh years could cast a patronus. I cast mine as an example. It went around and woke up those who were still kind of asleep. It went around to everyone before it came back to me. However it completely ignored Elaine Dupree, a Slytherin. Now it didn't do that the last time that I cast the charm. Something has changed in her and I am sure that it is dark in nature. However I am not sure exactly what though. But still I think that we should keep an extra eye on her." He had already resolved to do so when he could. There was something about her that troubled him, especially since his patronus had even informed him as to why it had not gone near her. It had conveyed that it felt a darkness coming from her. Which was very odd, but it only strengthened his theory that the mastermind was in fact a student.

Slowly he nodded as Walton explained to him on about how the previous Headmaster had preferred not even be in the office at his own choosing, he shook his head in disbelief. Crazy fool, so much power was at his fingertips and he did nothing…the idiot thought Burt as he looked up to the ceiling and some of the other portraits. Most were either sleeping, empty from the current portrait and somewhere else, or eagerly listening to the conversation going on below them. One of the portraits held the famous Albus Dumbledore, however his picture was empty, he was nowhere in sight. This was not a normal thing for the once previous Headmaster to do, he rarely left his portrait only for some kind of business or if something was wrong. Since the start of this term, to be exact it was when it was announced Burt became Headmaster that he had left his portrait at Hogwarts disappearing to somewhere no one knew. Must be in disapproval of in me and my plans thought Burt he shook his head, he didn’t care it was easier without that man around.
He turned his gaze back to down to Walton -who started speaking of who he suspected could have been the mastermind behind all the attacks if it was a student. He nodded slowly as he listened and raised his eyebrow as he explained his theory on why he suspected the person. A patrouns acting completely different around someone than they use to, was very strange indeed especially in such a short time frame as Burt felt. ”That is very odd.. whispered Burt stroking his chin as he thought about the student in fact, he didn’t really know her but she was a Slytherin which meant he could have Vincent keep an eye on her. I will have to tell him to keep an eye on her thought Burt as he sat up a little straighter in his chair to speak to Walton now. ”That is very good proof to keep an extra eye on her, please do so and I bet you already are. I will ask Vince to keep an extra eye on her as well, but I am relying on you more Walton this is your theory” said Burt his voice was blunt, but not in a rude a way. He trusted that Walton could keep an extra eye on the student and felt since it was his theory that a student could be the mastermind he should be the one to really keep an eye on Elaine.

Walton followed the gaze of the Headmaster, who had looked up towards the portraits of the previous headmasters and headmistresses. There were many that were paying attention to their conversation, some were not in their portraits, like the one of Professor Dumbledore. Walton knew of course that Dumbledore had left his portrait here at Hogwarts at the beginning of the term. But he knew exactly where he was at. And apparently he wanted to speak with Walton. Walton had seen Dumbledore in his portrait here just a few minutes ago, as the current headmaster was looking at him, and Dumbledore had signaled to Walton with a wink that he wanted to talk before disappearing. He figured he would go and find out what the man wanted after he finished talking with the Headmaster. "Sir, if I might ask but how many of them have left?" He asked gesturing towards the portraits. He knew of a few like Dumbledore who had left, he just wanted to find out which ones, so he could have them tracked down and get any information that they had. It would be a long process but it might be useful, to find out what they knew. That is if they knew anything or if they had simply left just because they didn't like Burt or wanted a change of scenery.
”That is very good proof to keep an extra eye on her, please do so and I bet you already are. I will ask Vince to keep an extra eye on her as well, but I am relying on you more Walton this is your theory” Of course he would keep an eye on her, and he also had expected the help of Vince since he was the Head of Slytherin House. “I appreciate you asking Vince to help keep an eye on her. And yes I will keep my eye on her to the best of my abilities. I will keep you informed on any new developments.” The best of his abilities, well his abilities were very advanced, and he could go undetected for as long as needed. But he also had classes to teach which was fine. For that would give him a better chance to interact with Elaine and to find out what it was that had changed and also to see if she was behind all of this. He also had plans on asking Neville about the Aurors/Order members who would be coming to help with the security of the school, if they could also assist him since he knew at least one of them was an animagus. But that would be left for latter when they arrived here.

As he watched Walton take a look around the office real quick at the portraits, he knew something was coming he was not going to like. What a surprise, another bloody question thought Burt as he slowly nodded as Walton inquired at how many of the previous headmaster and headmistress had left their portraits. Inside he was not angry, just slightly more annoyed that he had to deal with another question from the ever so curious Professor. Why did you promote him? You could have fired him, brought in a new Professor, could have had Thesis the thoughts kept ranting on in Burt’s head as he just gave a long stare at the Professor, than moving his eyes around at the portraits which now the remaining ones were staring right at Walton and Burt as if they were watching a Roman Gladiator match. He gave a slight chuckle as he looked back to Walton. “Some left cause they don’t care for me, some left on business. Not all have a problem with me.”replied Burt, giving a little wink it was mostly the truth. Most that indeed that had left, did so because they did not care for Burt or feel he was given special treatment in his appointment of the Position. Dumbeldore had left on a whole other reason; he knew Burt well enough and had long seen his power hunger ambitions. He said I craved power like Tom Riddle did, and Grindewald…Old fool you helped Grindewald. You are no saint, and now you’re dead. Will see who is the best the quick thought came across Burt’s mind as gave a little smirk.
Some of the previous headmasters however took a liking to Burt, including Severus Snape and Phineaus Black. Snape stayed but was neutral and made clear to Burt he would not do any bidding for him in any power plans he had, but also agreed not to reveal stuff to Dumbeldore or others that could harm him. However Burt rarely trusted anyone, including the dead, so he made sure never to reveal anything big. Black on the other hand had started to prove useful in a few errands, and provided wonderful advice on the new position and other stuff as well. Burt gave a quick glance both to Snape and Black who were looking directly at him and Walton. ” Yes thank you, please keep me inform. I will have Vince keep in touch with you on the subject as well”said Burt his eyes moving back down to Walton as he started speaking about him keeping an eye on Elaine. He would keep an extra eye on her of course; maybe even have a special meeting with her. If she was the mastermind, he had a few choice words for her. Like, could you start killing at any other worse time?!” thought Burt he leaned back in his chair a little bit and thought to himself on how far Walton was going to go with his curious questions. He was starting to regret ever promoting the man to Gryffindor Head of House, maybe the title and that of an International Auror thought him some kind of power or authority to question Burt like he did. Proximity to power deludes one into thinking they wield it, always true thought Burt remembering that Walton had been in the office a lot before, maybe being in this office so much gave him that belief.

“Some left cause they don’t care for me, some left on business. Not all have a problem with me.” Walton could have guessed that in a heart beat. ‘Of course some left because they don’t like you old man.’ He thought before he said “That makes sense.” It was all he would say on the matter for he knew that Dumbledore was currently at one of his other portraits, probably at the one in the International Auror headquarters. Walton noticed the annoyed look in the headmaster’s eyes. It almost made him laugh. He was just asking simple yet very tough questions yet he could guess what the Headmaster was thinking he didn’t even have to use legilimency, on the old man.
“Well I am hazarding a guess here, Headmaster, but I must say you look quite annoyed. Are my questions bothering you? And just so you know unlike you I am not deluded by those that have “power” or by power itself. Just remember power corrupts those that seek to use it for personal gain.“ Walton knew he might have stepped over the line with that last statement but oh well cause he was ready for anything that the Headmaster would try. Even if the old man tried to have him thrown out of castle and sacked, it wouldn’t matter because there was nothing that the old man could do, and the board of governors couldn’t do anything about it either. Because he had been put in place by the Magical World Educational Committee, which just so happened to be comprised of the older members of the International Aurors. There were few people that weren’t members of the International Aurors but they didn’t have much pull. Once the Magical World Educational Committee said something or put someone in only they could sack that whomever they appointed. But they mostly kept their business to themselves. Part of Walton’s job as an International Auror was interrogation, and he just so happens to be the best in the business. Some times he would use legilimency or other methods, that were allowed by the International Aurors. But he could also get information by simply asking simple yet tough questions that would get whom ever he was interrogation to say information that they didn’t want to. And that was the main reason as to why he had asked the question about the portraits. And he was already getting small hints as to what the old man was up to.
Walton nodded towards the Headmaster in acknowledgement and said “Will do, and thank you.” He by having Vince keeping in touch with him the headmaster had just screwed up. Cause now it made Walton’s job easier, since he could use the opportunity to keep better tabs on Vince as well. He just sat there watching the headmaster, wondering what kind of reaction he was going to get out of the old man.

An eyebrow simply rosed across Burt’s face and a little smirk played on his lips as he listened to the words coming out of Walton’s mouth. Inside he was furious that Walton would even dare say something like he had, this man was out of place. International Auror or not, he would soon learn his place, he forgot something this castle was under Burt’s control. Soon he would be living in Burt’s world; plans were already in motion stuff he could not stop. The man could ask Burt curious questions as much as he wanted, prode him for anger to get information it would not matter. He started laughing, at first it was a slight chuckle and then he busted full out in almost a manic laugh as he just looked right at Walton, like he was some sort of hilarious looking “clown”. He straightened himself up in his chair as he stopped laughing so hard it turning to a chuckle as he caught his breath. He truly thought Walton at a person was funny, like he knew anything about power or what Burt wanted to do with power, he had only his assumptions. Foolish little mouse thought Burt as he gave a huge smirk to Walton before finding the words to speak to him. ” Professor Grey, I respect you highly however I thought better of you. You think that I am deluded by power, sadly you are mistaken. Thank you for your advice but I fear you are completely wrong as it does not apply to me, I thought Jones trained better for the International Aurors”said Burt, his voice was quick and blunt to the point but in a rather pleasant tone and he gave a swift nod to Walton as “I’m done with this”.
He moved a few papers across his desk and put them in a drawer before getting up from his chair and walking up the stairs to the second level of the office. Book cases, instruments, and a large telescope sat along the second level of the office, and Burt went over and picked up a book from one of the cases it was a solid black book, it was titled “How to not piss your Boss Off”, a muggle book that Burt had found a long time ago at the Ministry. He thought it was funny, and he started using the book giving it to employees who angered him, to read, it was a boring and dull read. He didn’t want Walton to read it, he didn’t care if he did, it was a symbolic message. Walking back down him sat at his desk and tossed the book on to the desk near Walton pointing at it for him. ”Take it; consider it an early Christmas gift. I’m sure you already have a smart ass gift to give me anyways. Or do you have any more thoughts or questions, and I mean as a Professor, if not the door is their Professor. I do have a school to run” said Burt he put an emphasis on Professor. He was tired of the International Auror Walton Grey and did not feel to entertain the mouse anymore in his office. He snapped his fingers and the door opened up for Walton as Burt leaned back in his chair and waited to see what Walton was going to say now. He knew he could not fire Walton, demote him in any such way but, he could kick him the hell out of his office, the Headmasters Office. A snicker came above from a previous Headmaster above them, which stopped short as the icy blue eyes of Burt quickly glanced at the bald head man. His eyes slowly went back down to Walton as he waited to see if he spoke, or would just leave like the good little mouse he needed to be. 648 WORDS @waltongrey SHORT NOTES THANK YOU MALIA TATE FROM ADOXOGRAPHY

“Thank you for your advice but I fear you are completely wrong as it does not apply to me, I thought Jones trained better for the International Aurors” Walton smirked. He knew he had struck a nerve, once the Headmaster reacted and said that. It was quite amusing the more he thought about it. What happened to the calm headmaster. “You are welcome for the advice Headmaster, and if you ever want more I will more than gladly be happy to share.” He paused for a moment and then added. “Oh and Jones doesn’t train better, he trains the best of the best.” It was true Jones would only ever train the best of the best. It was the only way things were done in the IAs.
He watched as the Headmaster stood and went up the stairs to the second floor to get something. He chuckled on the inside as the old man came back and tossed a book at him. Walton took one look at the book and read “How not to piss your Boss off”. He busted up laughing and laughed for a good minute or two before he was practically being thrown out of the office. “Well I really must be off Sir.” Walton stood up and stretched before heading to the door that was now open. He turned around and said. “Oh I almost forgot your book.” With that he turned and snapped his fingers and the book turned into a mouse. It would change into several different animals throughout the next eight hours, and nothing could get rid of it or even harm it. Well there was one thing that could get rid of it and that was the counter charm, which only he and Jones knew, since they had come up with the spell one day when they were bored. “Enjoy your new pet Sir.” And with that he walked out of the room laughing his head off as he heard the unmistakable sound of the mouse changing into a goat. And it would go on from there, changing into normal animals as well as magical animals such as a grim, a dragon, etc. Things were going to be very interesting this year.

He nodded at what Walton said and only smirked at the remark about Jones training the best of the best. He didn’t give much thought to the International Aurors, they were highly skilled and had high range of influence and power however in the end they would end up being pawns for Burt one day. He thinks I’m just after power…so much more than that silly kid” thought Burt he stood up and nodded at Walton who had now stood up and took the hint to leave the office. ”So sad to see you go Professor, I assure you I’ll be checking in” said Burt he gave a smile to Walton, one that was not a friendly one at all but just screamed evil for the split second it appeared on his face. Moving around the desk he clapped Walton on the shoulder and smiled again to bid him farewell, before moving back to his chair behind his desk.
He turned around to hear what Walton said about the book, and saw the transfiguration charm he used on the book, he gave a slight frown. It was not something he wanted to deal with it right now, and he assumed that it would be not something to get rid of easily. He smirked and nodded at Walton calling out to enjoy his new pet, oh he would. ”Thank you Grey”called out Burt giving a slight laugh as the mouse changed into a goat. Look a little like Neville’s grandma thought Burt rolling his eyes as he just laughed and sat back down at his desk and started on paperwork. He enjoyed the next hours as it changed from goat, to a small dragon that toasted some of his papers, however he did not enjoy the Blast Ended Skewet. A grim was the next one to appear out of the charm, and Burt turned his eyes and looked right at it and gave a little smirk. ”Some say you are the bad omen, they are wrong. I am the bad omen for you” said Burt talking to the grim as he started back on to his paperwork and thinking of revenge to take on his ever so curious Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor.
