It was that time again. Family dinner with the Notts. At least, with Vi and her parents. River had sat across from Vi throughout all of dinner and they didn't talk much. At least he didn't. The Notts mentioned how great this arrangement was working out and how it was a shame that both Theodorus' and Raleighs betrothals had fallen through. Her parents seemed to preferred Leighs situation. They'd rather the girl be dead then just straight up leaving her family for some other guy.
The way they were talking about Braelynn was making River sick to his stomach, but he was trying not to show it. He just kept his eyes on his food, occasionally glancing up at Vi until the dinner was over and their parents left them alone. River stood from the dinner table and nodded to Vi. "How's your summer been?" he asked.
@vi (let's say we're at her house)

Viovinnia was never excited about the idea of dinner with River Flint and his family but after having it occur every week for the last few months now during the holidays, she had grown quite used to it. She just didn't speak much, which was partly due to her uninterested demeanor and also because her parents preferred her to not speak unless spoken to in social situations like this. And Merlin knew River wouldn't speak to her during dinner so Vi always just ate in silence. This usually resulted in her thoughts shifting to the blonde boy she had met at the end of the school year but she always tried to shake herself out of those particular thoughts quickly.
The conversation had taken a turn to their children's betrothals when Vi actually started listening again. By the sound of it, her parents were not at all pleased that the Lestrange girl Theodorus had been engaged to had run off with the Potter boy. Vi let a small sound, much like a chuckle, breathe out of her nostrils. Of course it was not Theodorus's fault, but after also hearing of River's brother's engagement also falling through, it was nice to be the only child looked upon as accomplished. Though Vi and her parents both knew that Theo was accomplished in his own ways, it was still a shame he could not merge their bloodline with the Lestranges.
Viovinnia had kept her eyes down at her plate the whole dinner, half listening and occasionally thinking not just of the blonde boy named Dustin but also where Theodorus may be. Wherever he was, Vi wished she was there too, getting a piece of the action he was sure to get himself into. At the end of dinner, Vi finally lifted her head and looked around the table, standing up as they all began to clear the dining area for the help to clean up. That was when she was met with River's eyes. He asked her how her summer was and this question could not have bored her more. She let out an exasperated sigh and rolled her eyes, folding her arms across her chest. "Fine. Yours?" She returned the question. She normally wouldn't do such a think, but Vi wanted to give her parents the impression that the one child's betrothal they had left to count on was actually going well.
It wasn't.

At her sigh, eye roll, and folding of her arms River felt that familiar disappointment in his chest. Had he seriously said something wrong just by asking her how her summer was!? He was started get more frustrated with her than anything. Then he remembered his lessons with his father this summer and tried to dig down to find that courage they'd been working so hard on. He placed his hands on the table, leaning over it. "I had an idea," he said, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Why don't we ditch this clean up and you can show me what's interesting around here? If there is anything," every bone in his body was telling him to back away, apologize profusely and let her continue to look down on him but he held his ground. his held his eyes on her and held his breath, waiting for her response and hoping he wasn't about to get fired rained down on him.
If the fire did come, however, he'd just have to fight back, right? That's what his father had taught him to do and what better place to practice than with the devil herself?

Viovinnia had been less than pleased with her engagement to the youngest Flint child the moment she had discovered what a spineless sponge he was. Sure he was pureblooded, and she didn't have anything against his being in Ravenclaw... it was just how weak he always acted. Vi was very not attracted to weaklings. In fact, quite the opposite. Vi was drawn to powerful beings. And River? He wasn't exactly the most powerful guy around.
The blonde watched as the house elves cleared off the table, seeming disinterested in anything River would have to say about his own summer. However, when he put his hands down on the table she caught her attention. She raised an eyebrow at him, though her expression still fairly blank. She had mentioned before how River needed to grow a spine and as she looked him, seeming to stand his own ground, she considered this may be his attempt to do so. After a click of her tongue against her teeth, she turned to exit the dining area. "Alright then," she said, pausing at the doorway to look back at him. "Come on."
Viovinnia led River down the hallway of the Nott's home. It was an elegantly decorated home, mostly colored with greys and blacks with a few gold things thrown about here and there. Vi was headed to a door at the very end of the hallway. She paused just outside the door, a smirk on her face. Then opened the door to reveal a large, expansive library.

River let out the breath he had been holding when she turned away to head out of the dining room, his shoulders slightly hunching forward. When she turned back to him at the door he straightened up, giving her a nod. "I am," he said, following her out of the room, down the hallway with the creepy greys, blacks and golds and toward a door at the end of the hallway. When she paused, he looked over at her expectantly only to find that she had a smirk on her face.
When the door opened his jaw dropped and he stepped forward, forgetting all acts of trying to be tough. "Wow..." he muttered, stepping inside completely and reaching his hand out to gently touch the nearest bookshelf. He could tell some of these books were very, very old. He turned toward her, "it's impressive," he said, giving her a short nod before turning back to the books. "Have you read some of these?" he asked.

Viovinnia wasn't surprised at the Ravenclaw's marveling of the library. She knew before she even led him down the hallway that the boy would likely fangirl over the amount of books in there. Typical Ravenclaw. When River asked if she had ever read any of the books, Vi simply shrugged. "Most," she responded, crossing over to the furthest part of the room where there was a giant, mahogany desk. Vi and her brother had been homeschooled up until the beginning of this very last school year, so she had had more than enough time to read more than half of the books in the library. They were nothing new to her.
The blonde looked over at her betrothed and raised an eyebrow at him, urging him to come forth again. Behind the desk, on the wall, was a very large, old, framed tapestry. It looked very much like an outline to anyone first glancing at it, but up close it was easy to see it was a timeline of lineage; or a family tree. "This is the Rowle/Nott family tree." She said, folding her arms across her chest and looking up at the tapestry. "It has been in the Rowle family for years and it was a great honor when my mother married a Nott," her voice was deadpan, as usual, as she walked over to the furthest part of the tapestry and pointed up, but made looked at River with a smirk. Viovinnia's name was already on it with a blank space next to it... a space for River's name one day. "Just as it will be when I merge with the Flints." Vi knew River was less than thrilled about marrying her. Truthfully, she wasn't too thrilled about it herself. But, anything to make the family proud...

Most. River couldn't help but feel a strange flutter of satisfaction at the fact that this was her answer. He didn't even know that she liked to read. Well, maybe she didn't, but if she had read this many books... either way, he liked hearing that from her. It made things a tiny bit more bearable... heck, maybe there was more he didn't know about her that would make all of this more bearable...
When he finally looked to her again she was across the room at a desk, making that eyebrow raised face as if to pull him toward her by sheer will. It worked. He was at her side, turning toward the tapestry on the wall as she explained what it was. He listened intently and followed her finger as she pointed to her own name... and that spot next to it. He swallowed hard, catching her smirk as she implied that there was a spot for him right there. He looked back at the tapestry, gave a short nod, and then turned back to her, "it sounds a bit like breeding fine horses, doesn't it?" he said, trying to sound as nonchalant and cavalier as she was. He leaned back on the desk.

Vi looked up at the tapestry with a blank expression. The spot next to her name was meant for River but as she looked at it in silence with River himself, she couldn't help but wonder about the possibilities of someone else's name being there. Someone like a certain Quidditch player. But she knew the idea of marrying someone her parents had no clue about was out of the question. Vi hardly knew anything about Dustin Bainbridge. Well, she hardly knew anything about River too. All she knew was that he was a pushover. But as she looked back at him leaning on the desk, she raised an eyebrow at him. He had seemed to be taking measures to be... not so much of a pushover lately. Like she had advised.
Vi didn't respond to River right away, she just continued to stare at the tapestry, willing herself not to think about Dustin. "I suppose," she said blankly, her mind etching Dustin's name onto the tapestry. With a quick intake of breath, Vi quickly turned away from the tapestry and looked at River. "What do you know about breeding fine horses, anyway?" She asked, her voice coming out only a bit less harsh than usual.

River just barely caught the slight shift in her tone, but it wasn't enough to make him really think anything had changed. Of course it hadn't, it wouldn't be that easy. He shrugged, "I don't, but I'm sure there's a book about it in here somewhere," he said, casually gesturing to the bookshelves beside them. He turned his head away from Vi for a moment, eyes scanning the shelves. "Which one's your favorite?" he asked. Did Vi even have favorites o anything? He had no idea. He didn't know if she had any positive emotions at all in there but,... she had to. She was human, right?
Well, he doubted that sometimes.

Vi had to admit, seeng River try to make an effort like he was was both impressive and awkward. At least he was trying, right? Vi didn't know what to make of it, though. Did he actually want to go through with the marriage? Vi did, of course, but only to make her family proud. She felt that she would never make an effort to be a good wife, though. That just wasn't who Vi was. On more than one occasion had Vi wondered how her parents would take it if she didn't have any kids. Merlin knew she certainly didn't want any with River, much less at all.
The Slytherin shrugged at River's question. "I like history books and educational reads, mainly," she answered in a bored tone. "I don't have time to read fiction or for fun." It was true, Vi had always been much to busy with her homeschool studies or with training to even think about picking up a book to read for fun. She was used to just reading all of her school books all the way through by now. "I doubt I could muster the energy to read fiction by now, anyway," she shrugged once more.

River nodded as she explained the kind of books she liked, trying to ignore the slight excitement building up in him. All these years and he had no idea she liked to read, let alone what she did read. He wasn't surprised that she didn't like fiction, which actually caused him to chuckle a little bit. River liked all kinds of books, and really couldn't pick a favorite... She added that she couldn't muster the energy to read fiction and he shrugged right along with her, "well, that must be why you're such a good student. As far as I know, I mean," she said, eyes still on the books around them.
After a moment he cleared his throat and pushed off the desk, "thanks for showing me this. And that," he gestured to the family tree. He didn't really care for it, actually, but she had brought him here... so... "maybe you should give it a try," he muttered, then he realized that muttering was not something he wanted to do around Vi and he turned back to face her. "I mean read something you don't have time for."
