Aaron had just met his brother. Half-brother of course, but Aaron didn't deal in halves. Blood was blood. In a crazy turn of events involving his own wolfsbane potion, Aaron had come to realize that Elias, a random stranger that he had taken pity on in the pub, was related to him through their murderous father. He had also found out that Elias and Jamie didn't like each other very much. There was tension on all sides, with Aaron cast into the middle as the pacifist older brother. There was also the psychotic cousin that Jamie had warned him about. He hadn't met Maria yet, but he was sure that their meeting wouldn't be too far in the future, now that he had found Elias. Whether she liked it or not, Elias was his brother, and brother trumped cousin.
It was a lot to handle for one day. After his conversation with Elias, Aaron desperately needed a smoke. He walked down the streets of Hogsmeade, the cigarette pursed between his lips, as he watched people do their shopping. He puffed on the smoke as he stood outside Honeyduke's, looking in their large display window. There were two small children tugging at the skirt of a woman that must have been their mother. Which made them brothers, if Aaron was using his context clues correctly. And they seemed to happy, tag-teaming their mother for extra candy. He smiled around the cigarette. Boy, he wished his family was that simple.

Hogsmeade was an interesting place. But, unfortunately Maria was too frustrated to enjoy it. Between Jamie, and Elias, Maria wasn't in the mood for 'charming little British village'. In fact, she wanted to set it all on fire. Watch it burn to ash. That'd show those two. Teach them a lesson for thinking she'd just roll over like some weak child. Jamie, she expected this behavior. Jamie wanted a fight, so she'd give her one. But Elias? How dare he take Jamie's side on this?! How dare he chastise her! And yet, even though he totally infuriated her, she stilled loved the idiot. He was her family, and she couldn't bring herself to hate him. Dislike him at the moment, yes, but never hate.
So, with a little huff in her step, Maria made her way through the village, ignoring most of the shops and displays. She didn't care about them. She didn't care about the people on the street with her. She didn't care that her stomach was growling when she passed the open doors of the Three Broomsticks, reminding the girl that she'd skipped breakfast and lunch. She didn't care about anything, basically, until she ended up running right into the back of someone smoking. "Watch where you're going!" She snapped as she recovered from the collision glaring up at the dark haired man. She knew his ethnicity immediately. She'd grown up in Brazil, she could recognize another Brazilian easily. The immense scaring made it a little tricky though. Now where did he get those...?

Lost in his daydreams, Aaron didn't see the person that was about to run into him until it was too late. The girl jostled him, and his cigarette fell from his mouth, ashes flying as it hit the cobblestone ground. Aaron swore in Portugese. That was his last cigarette until he could buy more.
"Watch where you're going!"
He whipped around, sizing the girl up. She would have been pretty to him if he wasn't so irritated. He did not need an attitude, especially when the source of the attitude had just ruined his last cigarette. "I could say the same to you," he retorted. He wasn't usually so rough-toned, especially with women, but his nerves were frazzled. He had just met another brother he didn't know he had, and he knew he would eventually run into the crazy cousin that Jamie had talked about now that he had found Elias. So he wasn't in the best of moods. "What's your damn problem?"

Maria recognized every Portugese curse that escaped the man's lips. She knew it. He was from Brazil. Normally, she would have been ecstatic by the encounter. You didn't mean many Brazilians in Europe. But she just wasn't in the mood. At all. Which was a shame. She hadn't had a chance to speak Portuguese in a long time. He turned towards her, his dark gaze taking in her features. She didn't like the way he was looking at her, she decided. And that way being 'irritated'. Yeah, she was in a pretty foul mood, so even seeing someone else annoyed was setting her off.
So, rather then apologize and move on... she scoffed. "Whatever my problem is, probably doesn't compare to yours." She was referring to the scaring of course. When picking a fight, it was always good to try and find a sore spot in the other person. Scarring on the face was a good guess.

Aaron should have been delighted by seeing the girl. He immediately recognized the twill of a Brazilian accent, and it always thrilled him to meet someone from his homeland. But this girl was a wildfire. And she was sparking his own anger flame.
"Whatever my problem is, probably doesn't compare to yours."
Aaron slapped the girl. He couldn't help himself. She brought out an anger in him that he didn't like, and that just made him angrier. He knew without knowing that she was referencing his face. Like he could help that. He wondered how well she would have fared at sixteen against a fully grown, fully transformed werewolf. She probably would have been torn to pieces, just like he had almost been. "Right now, you're my problem. So you might want to lose the attitude before I get mad," he growled, his fingers clenching into fists. His body shook, and he wished he had a bottle of wolfsbane potion on his person. Or the smoke that was still smoldering on the ground.
"You also owe me a cigarette," he added flatly.

Maria struck a nerve. She knew it immediately. She would have felt proud for riling up a complete stranger so quickly if it weren't for the slap. She hadn't expected that. Because usually it took more prodding to get someone to physically try and hit her. And she usually saw it coming so she could avoid it. Today though? She didn't managed to avoid it, and his hand made contact with her cheek. Immediately her eyes flared. Her own hand swept up, smacking his away. "Unless you want more scars, don't touch me." Her voice had gone low, dangerously low, as if ready to strike at any moment. But that was't the biggest change. The hand that had smacked away his own was hot. Literally. And sparking. No really. Her hand was sparking, trying to catch on fire.
She dropped her hand to her side, fist clenched tight as she tried to stop it from bursting into flames. She'd promised Elias she wouldn't set anyone on fire this year. That she wouldn't hurt them with her unnatural power. And she'd managed, so far. But every time it'd almost happened he'd been there to stop her. He'd helped calm her down before she did something. He wasn't here this time though. They hadn't spoken since their argument. She'd refused to even go near him, and went as far as pretending he didn't exist.

A growl began to rise in the back of Aaron's throat. The girl must be a glutton for punishment if she was now threatening him. He still didn't understand why he was so infuriated by her, but now he was hopping mad. Until he saw her hand. Like a torch on steal, her fingers began producing sparks. Aaron took a step back, staring at her and her now lowered hand. He knew wandless spells were possible, but people didn't usually spark like that, especially when they were emotional. He took another step back, a flicker of fear darting across his eyes. This girl was dangerous. And yet...
He knew - or at least his mother had known - a family of veelas in his home in Brazil. They had a daughter, someone he didn't associate with too much due to age, but he knew her. Was it possible? Was this place really that much of a beacon for everyone associated with his life? He had just met a brother he had never known at his own workplace. Aaron threw up his hands, palms out, in surrender. Could it be? "Maria?"

Maria saw his gaze drop to her hand. Immediately she clenched her fist tighter, trying to extinguish the sparks. She knew the ability wasn't.... well natural. Full Veelas, of course, it was extremely common. It was as common to them as wands were to wizards. But part Veelas rarely inherited the ability. In her 17 years Maria had never met, or even heard of another part Veela that could create fire like their full Veela relatives. Some people thought it was amazing that she'd inherited the ability, while others did exactly what this guy was doing. Taking a step back. Fear. She spotted the flicker of emotion in his eyes, and he second step back only made it more clear. Good. let him be afraid of her.
Without a word, and still glaring like she might strangle him she turned on her heels, ready to walk away.
"Maria?"
Hearing her name was enough to make her freeze midstep. She slowly, turned back to look at him. He had hands up in a sign of meaning no harm and surrender. Her eyes stayed narrowed, but there was a flicker of uncertainty, and confusion. How did he know her name? And who the hell was he? "How do you know my name?" she demanded.

Well, that had certainly gotten her attention. She was on the verge of walking away, but the name stopped her, at least for a moment. It encouraged Aaron. And pained him. It made him think of his mother, who often spent her days with the family of veelas. She had been close friends with the matriarch, which was the only reason Aaron had recognized the girl's sparking fingers, if he was right about her identity.
Aaron ran his fingers through his messy brown hair. This day was turning into one huge headache. He was going to need a lot more than a cigarette before it was all over. He'd gone from being ready to strangle the girl to...what? Trying to be friends? "My, uh," he cleared his throat, "My mother was friends with your mother. I think. You're a veela, right?" It was probably rude to assume such a thing, but he wasn't sure what else to do. And if she was a veela, then slapping her was the dumbest thing he could've possibly done. He was damn lucky he wasn't rolling on the ground trying to extinguish himself.

His words were enough to make Maria's heart stop. She felt like she'd been punched in the stomach, the breath knocked out of her.
He knew her mother.
Maria hadn't spoken to anyone about her parents. Not even Elias, her own cousin, knew what happened to her parents. He knew she lived with their grandparents, obviously, but she'd never told him why. Hell, even Elias' mother, her father's sister, didn't know what had happened. She knew didn't know about the accident that had taken her mother's life. Or about her father's suicide. Elias didn't know. But this guy.... If he'd known her mother.... Oh god, he knew. "Half." she managed to say. Her mother had been the full Veela, and to this day Maria was convinced she was the most beautiful woman Maria had ever seen. Her father was a gypsy, who'd run away with her rather then enter an arranged marriage with a Romani girl. ".... Who are you..?"

Maria didn't look too happy that Aaron knew of her. It wasn't saying much. He had only heard the name mentioned a few times by his mother because their mothers had apparently been very close. Until, one day, they suddenly weren't. Aaron never knew why his mother suddenly stopped talking about Evangeline. Every time he asked, a somber look would cross her face and she would quickly change the subject. It wasn't his concern and he had never even met the woman, so he eventually stopped questioning it.
Half, she had said. It made sense. The girl was alarmingly beautiful and her Brazilian exoticness only enhanced her already lovely features. It also explained the heat in her hands, as well as the sparking. Veelas were known for conjuring fire, and while he hadn't heard of their children inheriting the ability, apparently Maria had. "Uh, Aaron," he replied when she asked who he was. Apparently her mother hadn't mentioned his family too much. "Look, I'm sorry for slapping you," he said quickly. He was now acutely aware that he could be lit on fire if he managed to piss her off again. "It's just been a crazy day, true?" He thought about Elias, whom he had simply left at the pub, needing space from the revelation that he had finally met another Greyback sibling. Yeah, crazy day was an understatement.
