River had had a long day already. He has spent too much time with Vi to stay positive and had exhausted himself trying to avoid Liv. He was tired, grumpy and... Well, lonely. Ophelia hadn't come back to school this year. Not that it mattered what with the Vi situation. Even though Vi could do whatever she wanted, River knew he couldn't. Not if he wanted to make his parents happy. He sighed, leaning against the wall. After a few moments of rubbing his temple he looked up, just in time to make contact with Dusti. Whether she eat just walking by or was standing there for a moment he didn't know, but his senses had already been triggered.
"What, Dust? After all these years you finally Have the guts to make eye contact with me?" he snapped, pushing off the wall to step toward her, "so what can I do for you?" he wasn't really asking, just spouting words angrily. These were things he really felt, sadly, but normally not to level he was addressing them now. He'd been meaning to talk to her... Not like this. It was too late, though.

It seems all the Flints were having bad days. Dusti herself was still at a barely staying in control state, just waiting for something else to set her off. Her patience was near zero, and her temper burning hot. With everything going on the last week, the last thing she need was attitude from River. Normally she avoided him. That was how life had been for years. Ever since the accident where she got seriously burned in place of him. He probably didn't even remember the incident, he'd been so young. She hadn't tried to stand up for him after that, having learned the hard way to stay clear. So she did. But that didn't mean she didn't know him. She knew he was more like Rusti. Kind. Sweet. Loving. Normal. And while she'd never say it, she wanted him to stay that way, to not end up like her and Raleigh. She'd even spoken to Raleigh about it over the summer, hoping he'd be able to keep River from going down the same path as them.
Obviously Raleigh was failing.
Dusti had been passing through, not intending to stop and talk to the youngest Flint, but casting him a glance as she walked. He immediately and figuratively bared his teeth at her, snapping without warning. And as previously mentioned... She had no patience right now. Even for her own brother.
Dusti immediately stopped, her previous nonchalant look turning sour and dark. He'd stepped away from the wall while snapping at her. All it took was a few steps on her part and a sharp shove to push him back against it, pinning him. "Don't you dare take that tone with me, River. Especially when we both know you're just trying to prove yourself to your father." Your father. Not hers.

River was so shocked that Dutsi even responded that it was incredibly easy for her to slam him back against the wall, momentarily knocking the wind out of him. The words she said, though, they were strange. Obviously he understood the part about not taking that tone... but they next part 'to prove yourself to your father. His eyes were too wide in shock to glare and he was too confused to even want to. He swallowed hard, "w-what? What do you mean?" the old River was back, all of his cruel bravado vanished by the confusion and worry at what she meant. Maybe she was just disowning their dad officially, that made sense, right? He'd seen it happen before. People stopped calling their parents their parents when they were through with them but... this was different. The way she said it sounded like... no, he couldn't start assuming. He needed to just wait it out, see what she said... but he still felt like his heart was choking him.

Just like that, the facade River had shattered the moment her own aggression showed. It was.... almost good to see him back to normal. You know, if Dusti hadn't been totally boiling in her own unbridled rage. At the world. At her parents. At her mother. At her 'real' father. At having two more brothers. She was just angry at everything. Absolutely everything. She pressed him against the wall a moment longer, before dropping her hand and taking a step back. He looked shocked, and confused. And then she realized what she'd said... and what he'd understood. He didn't know.
Dusti almost swore right then and there. She hadn't meant to give it away. But he was a Ravenclaw, of course he figured out something was off from that one little word. She tsked, looking way and taking another step back. What was she even supposed to tell him? He practically idolized their... his... Oh it was all so confusing. Marcus Flint. She ran her hand through her hair, her own confusion settling in. Who was he to her anyway? "It doesn't matter, River." She'd already gotten in one fight over this (that had to be broken up by other Slytherin girls and a professor because it'd actually gotten violent), she didn't need another.

River held still has Dutsi shoved him into the wall a little further, holding him there. Finally, she dropped her hand and stepped back. Her tsk and looking away caused River to push off the wall. He was not going to let her get away. It doesn't matter? What was it? He didn't want to hurt her, he didn't want to be so angry, but he didn't know what else to do. Now he felt like he was just breaking. Crumbling at the idea that he hadn't talked to his sister for years and at the idea that she was clearly keeping some big secret from him. Her actions now were proving that.
He shook his head, taking a step toward her again, "Dusti please. Please explain I..." he held a hand out, but dropped it quickly. He could feel his lip starting to quiver, his eyes getting misty. "What's going on?" he pleaded, hoping she'd make eye contact again.

River was.... pleading.
That surprised Dusti. And, for that moment, her whole body froze and she just looked at her younger brother. It felt like this was the first time she was really seeing him though. How he'd gotten to get so old. Those kind eyes and gentle features. He was only an inch or so shorter then herself, and he might surpass her in height one day. Somehow, she'd managed to go so long without a conversation with her younger brother that he'd... well grown up without her realizing it. His pleading, begging for an explanation made Dusti frown, and take a small step back. IT was almost desperate, the way he'd spoken, and she didn't like how his eyes were growing a little moister. If he bloody cried on her, she was so out of here. It'd definitely been a mistake looking back at him, because now, seeing those emotions in his expression, she found herself unable to break the accidental eye contact.
What was she supposed to say..?
She swallowed, and pursed her lips tightly together. Several silent seconds ticked by, and then, she found her lips parting. "Father isn't the only one that likes to have affairs." She softly muttered. It wasn't exactly a secret that Marcus Flint hadn't been faithful to their mother. But the Flint children had never been given a reason to believe that their mother, despite all her terrible flaws, would ever be adulterous.

Dusti took that step back, her eyes fixed on his and her lips pursing. When she finally opened them again, he wished she hadn't. He stumbled back until his back was against the wall again. Both of his hands lifted, to run his fingers through his hair. He wouldn't cry, he wouldn't cry. He blinked, and broke eye contact with her, looking down at the floor. Finally, after a long moment, he looked back up at her. "I'm sorry, he said. "I shouldn't be treating you like this. And I'm sorry we haven't talked in years. It's my fault," he reached a hand out and placed it on her arm. "Thanks for telling me... I'm so sorry. When did you find out? Oh God's," a shaky hand ran through his hair again, "I've gotta find Rust."

Dusti hated that River seemed to have this 'perfect image' of their parents. That he wanted to please just. Hell, she hated that Rusti tried to please them. How could either of them bend to their parents will and just be submissive little mice? After all the horrible things they'd done, how coudl either of them have any sort of sentimental feelings towards them? But even more shocking, why did Dusti even care that her mother had cheated? Oh, right. Probably because her entire life had been a lie. And while she and Rusti were raised by their monster mother and Marcus Flint, their real father had a perfect family and didn't give a damn about them. Even worse, he'd thrown all that away to make the biggest mistake ever, and that was sleeping with their psychotic mother. So yeah, Dusti was angry at her parents. All her parents.
Now River was apologizing, and Dusti wanted to make him stop right then and there. He'd even reached out to put a hand on her arm, her gaze following that hand to make sure that that was where it stayed. She'd never been a fan of being touched, but at least she didn't flinch. "Rusti already knows." She managed to spit out after a moment as her eyes turned away from her younger brother. "You're still his, as far as I know. I don't see that as a comfort, but at least your entire existence hasn't been a lie." She needed to stop talking. That was way to personal for her to share with River. They weren't close, she shouldn't be sharing these sorts of things. And yet, it'd just come out.

River pulled his hand back as she spoke about Rusti, her tone harsh. "I figured she did I just... need to talk to her," River had always been close to Rusti and not to Dusti, which was why it was so hard for him to hear this information from her and not from the other twin. Dusti went on, turning away from him, talking about how he was still Marcus's son. How his existence wasn't a lie. Like hers was, she was implying.
"But part of it is. And important part. You," he said flatly, unsure if she even cared about what he was saying. He sighed, taking a step back, "I guess this is just as well."

Dusti hadn't thought Rusti and River were close but... Well, she hadn't really been paying that much attention as of late so she honestly didn't know. For all she knew, River and Rusti had a normal sibling relationship, unlike Dusti and the youngest Flint... IT had been normal. Once. Before she'd learned the hard way what happened when she tried to protect people. "You can probably find her with Gaius." She offered. Her twin had been engaged to the boy for years, but always managed to get out of spending any ort of time with him since the end of last year. Once the two started talking... Well to Dusti's surprise they actually got along. That didn't mean Dusti trusted him though. She kept a very close eye on the Goyle whenever she was around.
Her eyes widened at his answer, basically saying that she was... important. "How?" She found herself asking without even thinking. Without even considering what sort of conversation she was opening herself up to. "I've been a terrible sister to you. Ever since-" She stopped. No, he must have been too young to remember that day. Best to keep that door shut tight. He didn't need to know what happened. Dusti looked away, and took a side step away. "It doesn't matter. Just, I'm not exactly the perfect sister, especially to you."

River nodded when Dusti suggested Rusti would be with Gaius. He figured that was where she would be. Then, her eyes widened as he said that she was important. She asked how, but before he could answer she spoke again. Again about she was a terrible sister ever since... something. She looked away and took a step away from him, saying it didn't matter and that she wasn't the perfect sister. He shook his head, "nobodies perfect, Dust," he cleared his throat, "Dusti. I'm not going to lie and say you've been great," he admitted, folding his arms protectively over his chest. "But I do want to know what you were about to say... ever since what? What changed?" he really had no idea what she was talking about, and that broke his heart.

Nobody's perfect. Well that was true. But still. Dusti had basically ignored his presence since the incident. She'd learned that day to look out for herself and Rusti. To stop trying to be a 'hero' and instead just protect the only person she could, Rusti. And yet somehow River didn't hate her. It amazed her that, like Rusti he hadn't become nearly as angry or spiteful as her and Raleigh. She didn't look at him as he spoke, she didn't need to. At least until he brought up the point she'd bite her tongue at, asking for an explanation.
Dusti didn't want to tell him. Didn't want him to know what happened. He'd been so little when it happened. But she'd just walked herself into a mess. And if she didn't tell him he might ask Rusti. And Rusti would be more willing to share the information. "I used to try." she started, her gaze finally returning to meet his own. "When you were little. Mother always made things worse though." she carefully explained, all the while trying to decide what she would tell him. "I got hurt trying. So I stopped." it wouldn't be hard to guess that 'hurt' was an understatement. Dusti didn't flinch at pain, she had a high tolerance to it. So to make her stop trying? It must have been very, very serious.

Her explanation made sense, and he looked down, biting his lip for several moments. He couldn't recall a specific incident, but he believed her. "Okay," he finally said, looking back up at her. "Then I won't let you get hurt again," he said firmly, his fists clenched at his sides even though he didn't notice. "I... need some time. To think about all this. But I'll find you," he promised, and then he turned on his heel and walked away as fast as he could. Everyone was acting so normal, but didn't they know the world was collapsing?
