Alice wasn't a big ice cream person. Growing up, her parents had taken her to Fortescue's every now and then after an afternoon spent at the Cauldron and tending the inn. Even as a child, it had never been something she was super fond of. But, like all humans, every now and then she got a real craving for it. So after Alice was finished with her individual studies for the day, she set off of for Florean Fortescue's for some ice cream.
Walking in was like taking a trip back to her childhood. Though she hadn't always been crazy about the stuff, ice cream still made her feel like a kid. Especiall Fortescue's ice cream; it reminded her of coming there with her parents and her brothers. She was alone this time, but she smiled at the thought of them being with her. It was weird having them all be in different places now. It used to be that she and her brothers and their father were all at Hogwarts during this time while their mother would be at the Cauldron. Now, their mother was still at the Cauldron and their father was still at the school, but Jayden was the only one there with him. Phil was in Brazil for the semester and Alice found that she missed her brothers dearly. As she ordered a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone, she wondered what the two of them were doing.
When Alice was handed her cone, she walked away from the counter to find a seat; her mind rather preoccupied with thoughts of what her brothers were up to and learning.

Ophelia was on her lunch break, wandering around the streets of London with no actual place in mind. She needed to be back in an hour of course, but she had brought her lunch and had ended up eating it while walking around. She was in the mood for something sweet, maybe a little salty too. She slowed down as she realized where her feet had taken her; the Leaky Cauldron. Of course; Florean Fortescues’ could never be beat when it came to ice cream. She hurried across the street, her red heels clacking against the pavement as she burst into the Cauldron. Waving hello to the bartender whose name she did not know, she hurried to the back alley way, took out her wand and tapped the bricks to reveal the magical alley. She wanted to skip down the lane she was so excited for ice cream, but she didn’t need to draw any more attention to herself. She was already wearing a black and white polka dotted dress with green tights. She might have looked ridiculous to most people, but she loved her funky sense of fashion.
She got to the ice cream parlor and ordered her favorite caramel nut swirl ice cream with extra caramel in a waffle cone. She turned around and saw a vaguely familiar girl sitting by herself in the sea of crowded tables. “Hello, do you mind if I sit? Everywhere else is a bit full,” she asked the girl, sticking out her hand. “My name’s Ophelia Teller, I think we went to school together for a bit. You were in Hufflepuff right?” she asked her, licking her ice cream cone so that it didn’t run down and get on her hands. She’d have enough mess with some of the patients coming in with magical colds and flus, she didn’t need to add ice cream to the mix.

Alice was seemingly lost in her own thoughts and memoires as she slowly licked away at her mint ice cream. She couldn't even hear the chattering and laughing of the other patrons as she sat there, reliving her childhood memories. It wasn't until an oddly familiar woman approached her and asked if she could sit with her. Alice blinked once and then saw the hand that the woman was offering her. It was then that Alice glanced up at her face and recognized her more.
Ophelia Teller. Alice thought as the woman spoke and she said aloud the exact reason Alice had recognized her. "Er, yes," she finally responded. "Yes, I think you were a few years older than me." Alice mused casually. "I just graduated." She added. Alice knew she recognized the woman's unique fashion style. She shook Ophelia's hand. "Alice Longbottom." And she gestured to the seat across from her. "By all means," she said. It was a new thing for Alice, to be so open and casual with people she hardly knew. But this was the adult world, and that's what adults did.

Ophelia smiled as she settled into the seat across from Alice. “Oh I remember you; eldest of the Longbottom clan. Your father was one of my favorite professors, though I’m sure he’d agree that Herbology was not my best subject,” she said with a laugh. “I also know I was probably remembered for my crazy outfits, which as you can see have not changed over the years,” she added proudly. She knew she dressed quirky and it was odd for most people; but it made her stand out and had been wildly encouraged by her mother while she was still alive. She knew her father would have loved for her to start dressing more conservatively, but didn’t have the heart to say anything out of love for his wife.
“So you must have just graduated, yeah?” Ophelia asked, keeping the conversation going as they ate their ice cream. Ophie wasn’t one for silences lasting too long while with someone else; besides she always seemed to have something to say. “What are you going to do now that you’ve left Hogwarts?” she followed up, picking up a napkin and wiping her hand of the melted ice cream that had escaped its’ conical home. Ophie was always curious what other people did after school; so many of her fellow classmates had either gone into Cursebreaking or became Aurors. Alice didn’t really have the air of either of those professions though.

Alice flashed Ophelia a half smile as the woman mentioned Alice's father. It was never really a surprise when people came to her and told her that her father was their favorite professor; he was hers, too! Ophelia then mentioned her outfits and Alice's smile widened slightly at the pride in Ophelia's voice. "That style suits you," Alice commented with a nod. Sometimes Alice wished that she could pull off a style like that, but was dead scared to.
Alice quite appreciated that Ophelia kept the conversation going. Alice nodded as she asked if Al had just graduated. "Yes," she replied with a little nodding. "I'm studying to become a magizoologist. My father's good friend and her husband are magizoologists," she smiled at the thought of Aunt Luna and her husband, Rolf. "What about you? What do you do now?"

Ophelia beamed. “Why thank you,” she said happily. She was glad at least someone else could appreciate her style instead of giving her a strange look, like Muggles always did on the Tube. It’s not like she was the most outlandish thing ever seen on the London Underground; she had seen far stranger things. “You should try it sometime; it’s jolly good fun to dress up in bold colors and patterns and make yourself happy,” she suggested, noticing the younger girl looked a little wistful. She always liked to encourage people to follow their dreams and wishes, no matter what they were. If they wanted to fly to the moon, why shouldn’t they?
“Oooh a magizoologist, that’s different!” she exclaimed. “I’m the Welcome Witch at Saint Mungos. I would have loved to do Healing, however my abysmal Herbology and mediocre Potions grades would make me a right rubbish Healer; probably done more harm to patients than good. So this way I’m still working with the hospital and helping people, but as more of a cheer up brigade than a Healer, which I’m better at anyway,” she explained. “I also am thinking of volunteering at that Wizarding Orphanage Shelter here in London, but I’m not sure if I just need to go right up and ask ‘hello can I volunteer’ or if there’s an application,” she added quickly.

Alice let out a sound similar to a laugh, but was more of a more "polite" scoff. She shook her head at the woman. "Oh, I could never pull something like that off." She said. "I mean, I wish I had the guts..." she admitted more quietly. Alice had never been a fan of the spotlight. Growing up being such good friends with James Potter, she left the spotlight and attention-grabbing to him. She much preferred the shadows.
The blonde smiled when Ophelia commented on how 'different' Alice's profession was. That was the sort of thing she actually liked to hear. "Thank you," she nodded once and then listened as the girl then explained what it is she does for a living. For some reason, Alice could really picture her as a cheery welcome witch. She was sure she'd cheered many up. "That's very sweet," she said, smiling a little. "I wasn't good at Potions either, by the way," she added. "And Herbology? I certainly didn't inherit a talent for that from my father." She rolled her eyes at the thought then looked back at Ophelia after taking a few licks of her ice cream. "I envy your ability to make people cheery. Not many people are good at that," she complimented the brunette.

Ophelia waved off Alice saying she couldn’t pull off an outfit like hers. “Oh pish posh Alice, it’s all about how you wear it not what you’re wearing anyway!” she said with a smile. “Well I’m glad I’m not the only one rubbish at Herbology - did any of your siblings inherit it?” she asked curiously. She was pretty sure the Longbottoms had three biological children; one of them had to be somewhat decent at Herbology she supposed.
She shrugged modestly as Alice complimented her ability to cheer people up. “I get it from my Mum. She was a cheery carefree woman who knew how to many anyone smile,” she said, fondly remembering her mother. It had been ten years since her mother died, and while she did get a bit sad sometimes still, mostly she remembered the happy times they had together, since that is how her mother wanted to be remember. “She always told me that a smile and a sunny disposition were the two greatest things I could ever give someone. That and I like making people happy,” she said with a half smile. She ate the rest of her ice cream and dabbed at her lips with a napkin. “So what brings a budding Magizoologist to Diagon Alley, aside from ice cream of course?” she asked the younger girl.

Alice let out a little chuckle as she looked down at her ice cream. "I wish I could have such a positive outlook on things like that," she said. Alice was far too self-conscious to ever wear anything like what Ophelia wore. In a perfect world, maybe she wasn't. But as it were, she would just have to keep dreaming of having such confidence. As Ophie asked about her siblings, Alice perked up. "Yes, actually. My middle brother, Phil, he is in Brazil right now studying at Castelobruxo." She smiled proudly. "My youngest brother kind of marches to the beat of his own drum." She smiled even wider as she thought of Jayden as well.
The way Ophelia began to talk about her mother, in past tense, kind of connected the dots for Alice. For whatever reason, it sounded like Ophelia's mother was no longer in her life. Alice was never one to pry, though; and it certainly wasn't her business to go snooping. So she offered up a small smile and said, "She sounds like a lovely woman." Alice shifted in her seat then when Ophelia changed the subject. "Just that, really," she shrugged. "My mum's not really running the inn right now. She wanted to be close to my brothers and my dad at school this. So, I've been staying there and wandering around the Alley when I can." The Cauldron was like home, so it didn't bother Alice one bit staying there without the rest of her family. "What about you?"

Ophelia gave the girl a smile but the gears in her brain were already turning. The idea had started to come to her several minutes into the conversation, but now it was beginning to form a coherent shape. “Oooh! That’s so exciting for him; my brother had wanted to study abroad but his skills were in Charms and Transfiguration,” she explained, her smile widening. “My mum used to say I march to the beat of my own drum; it can be a blessing and a curse,” she said with a laugh. Her smile faltered only for a moment when Alice said her mother sounded like a lovely woman. “She was,” Ophelia said softly. “She died when I was fourteen; cancer. My father tried to convince her to go to Saint Mungos’ but she refused; she believed that the universe was trying to tell her that it was her time to leave this earth and she didn’t want interference; she was a Muggle you see,” she explained, finding herself smiling fondly at the memory. “She had some quirks, but I think that’s what my father loved about her so much,” she added. Ten years; she couldn’t believe her mother had been gone for that long. Finishing her ice cream, Ophelia stood up and stuck out her hand to Alice. “Come on, we have to be going,” she said, grinning mischievously. She didn’t tell the girl where they were going; she’d find out soon enough.

Alice nodded at the happy witch. "It is. I think he's really enjoying himself," she smiled. Both of her brothers were very happy, lucky young men. They both had good things going for them, both had good girlfriends as far as Alice could tell, and they both seemed very happy with life and that was all Alice could ask for for them. They deserved it. Alice smiled softly when Ophelia said her mother told her she marched to the beat of her own drum. "Nothing wrong with that," Alice shrugged as she finished off her ice cream. She was silent as Ophelia spoke again of her mother. Alice always felt awful when people spoke of their loved ones who had passed on. She had never been through such a loss, so she had no idea what that felt like. But she seemed like she had come to peace with it, and for that, Alice couldn't help but let her soft smile return. It was admirable how Ophelia spoke of both of her parents.
The magizoologist raised an eyebrow when Ophelia held out her hand for her. Regardless of her curiosity, Alice took it. "Where are we off to?"

Ophelia beamed as Alice accepted her outstretched hand; she had hoped the younger Hufflepuff would agree to come with her and she was delighted. “You’ll see,” Ophie exclaimed in a singsong voice. She led the girl out of Diagon Alley and linked arms with her as they strolled down the busy street. “Don’t worry if you don’t have any Muggle money, I do,” she reassured Alice as they walked. Finally, they reached their destination; a vintage clothing shop that Ophelia frequented regularly.
“Good afternoon!” Ophelia called to the shop owner, who waved and addressed her by name. “Anything new this week?” she asked, and she was directed towards the far left of the store. “Come on then,” she told Alice, leading her to a long rack of vintage dresses. “Evelyn gets some of the best vintage dresses from the 1920s, I think a flapper era dress would look simply gorgeous on you,” she told her, plucking a black glittery dress with fringe from the rack and holding it out for Alice to see. “Do you see anything that catches your eye?” she asked Alice.

Alice had absolutely no idea where Ophelia could be leading her, but when she mentioned something about muggle money, Alice got the idea that they were about to do some muggle-type shopping. Alice was sure she had some leftover muggle money in her bag from past family trips. When they reached their destination, Alice was a little surprised. She had never shopped for anything labeled as "vintage." Alice's clothing style could probably be described as comfortable, rather than stylish. But, Alice had always preferred it that way.
It was surprising to Alice that the shopkeeper addressed Ophelia by her name, and Ophelia seemed to be on a regular name basis with her. It was a little admirable though, to the young Hufflepuff alum. When Ophelia gestured for her to follow, Alice did so, looking at the racks of clothes surrounding them. Her eyes widened slightly at all of the selections. When Ophelia held up a glittery dress, Alice bit her lip. She made sure not to look rude, not wanting to offend Ophelia. "Glitter... isn't really my thing," she offered up a polite smile at Ophelia and as she did, a color just behind Ophelia caught her eye. Alice reached for the dress and held it up, revealing a maroon-ish lace dress and her eyes widened once again. "Oh," she breathed. Alice had no idea vintage could include such cute selections.

Ophelia’s smile never left her face, even as Alice said something glittery wasn’t really her thing. “That’s alright, we’ll find you something that IS your thing and you’ll look amazing!” she exclaimed. Then she saw it; that Look. The look she experienced every time she saw a piece of clothing that she loved so much that she absolutely had to have. She followed Alice’s gaze and saw the maroon dress. Her smile widened as she turned back to the younger woman. “That would look so lovely on you; you have to try it on!” she exclaimed as Alice held the dress up in front of her. Between the color, fabric and shape, the dress would look simply divine on Alice. “Come come, the dressing room is this way!” she said, taking the crook of Alice’s elbow and leading her towards the back. On the way there, Ophelia spotted a silver fringed flapper dress and her expression brightened. “Oh yes,” she said, snatching it up while still continuing to walk back. She shooed Alice into the dressing room while she took another, changing into the dress. It was a little big on her, but she could always fix that; Ophie was a seamstress after all. She stepped out of the dressing room. “Alice? Are you ready to come out?” she called, doing a twirl so the fringe fanned out. @alice this dressy

It was... refreshing, being around someone whose smile never really seemed to leave their face. The more Alice saw Ophelia's smile the more she found herself smiling. Smiles really were contagious. Alice smiled slightly when Ophelia told her she would look lovely in a dress. Alice had never been one to wear many dresses, but Ophelia's upbeat personality was enough to convince Alice as the brunette grabbed a hold of her elbow and led her into the dressing rooms. Alice stepped into the dressing room and began to change into the dress. It was weird; without Ophelia having convinced her, Alice probably wouldn't be buying a dress, much less trying it on. Alice slid her arms into the dress then smoothed it out just as Ophelia called out to her. Alice stepped out and immediately noticed the dress Ophelia had changed into. "That suits you so well," she complimented. The sparkles looked far better on Ophelia than they ever could on Alice.
