To say the month of September had been eventful would have been an understatement. First the Triwizard Tournament, then Dan’s arrival, then admitting her feelings to him only to find they were reciprocated, then Niko finding out, and finally Niko being stabbed. It was enough to make anyones’ head explode, and Irina’s probably would have, had it not, ironically enough, been for Dan. With his empathy and her clairvoyance, they made an odd pair, she knew it. But she also knew that being around Dan made her feel so much better, and she felt happier than she thought she could ever be. Falling for your brother’s best friend was impossibly cliche, but that was what happened. She just hoped he felt the same way after the past few days; she knew the emotions from the night of the attack must have been horrible to deal with.
Dan had wanted to meet up that day, and Rina had suggested hiking, along with some tree climbing, as was their usual tradition. Standing at the edge of one of the many trails leading around the Black Lake, Irina felt a little nervous, as she always did before he showed up. She had dressed in her favorite sweatshirt that reflected the colors of the Bulgarian National Quidditch team over a black tank top and leggings; it was finally beginning to feel like fall outside. As she waited, thoughts bubbled into her head. What if he wanted to break things off because of Niko? What if Niko had told him that if he went near her again he’d send a curse in the owl post? Or worse, what if he was sick of whatever emotions she was feeling and didn’t want anything to do with her? No, that last one was ridiculous; if anything Dan too had seemed more calm and happy, relaxed even. But what did she really know.
As soon as she saw him though, any nerves just melted away and she smiled. “Hi,” she said simply, just happy to see him. “There are a lot of trails that lead back around the lake, I figured we could start there?” she suggested, looking at him expectantly.

That one second changed everything.
That second that Irina didn't feel anything. That had affected Dan more than any emotion he had felt in his entire life. More than any overload he'd ever had. Why? Because it was by far the worst thing he had ever experienced.
That wasn't to say that it overloaded him, hurt him, made him nauseous, or any of those symptoms. No, it wasn't the worst experience of his life because of any of those reasons. It was the worst because for that second, he realized what other people felt like. That they couldn't tell what others were feeling, that they couldn't share those things.
Dan had never thought of it that way, as sharing. He never wanted to. Even now he was still sure that he would hate it at times, of course! But he felt... different, strange and somehow elated. This also wasn't to say that he was going to go around just letting anybody touch him or come near him. He wasn't a new person he just... had a new perspective.
Especially when it came to Irina.
He asked her to meet up with him today and she suggested hiking and tree climbing, which was perfect. He approached the Black Lake and saw her, and he quickened his step. She greeted him and suggested the trails around the lake and he nodded, "that's perfect," he held out a hand to her, raising an eyebrow as if challenging her to take it.

Irina smiled slightly before reaching out and taking his outstretched hand. Well that was new; usually she had been the one to instigate physical touching. She had been totally fine with that since she knew it was hard for him to open up with his empathy, but she liked this instigation. "Well, this path is the most worn though, nearly all the students who at least pretend they like to hike go down this one," she said, pointing down a nice, easy flat path to their right. Grinning devilishly, she gently tugged him towards their left, which was set at an incline with rocks jutting out of the path. "This one is the path less traveled, except if you're, well, me. It's a bit tricky at times but as long as you keep a hold of my hand you should be alright," she teased, squeezing his hand lightly. "Plus the view is to die for at the end," she added, nodding at the path.
They walked along the path together in a comfortable silence, hands still entwined. Irina glanced quickly down and back at him. "You seem to be in a good mood today," she noted with a small smirk. She didn't want to say out loud that she was peaceful and at ease just walking along this path with him, but then again he could probably feel that anyway. She grabbed at a tree branch that hung over a small divet in the path and lept over with ease, never letting go. Turning around, she reached out her other hand to him. "Come on, I've got you if you slip," she said. Though perhaps it would have been better if Dan had gone first, Irina felt confident in her strength that if he fell she could catch him.

Irina took his hand, and her emotions surged through him, but he didn't react outwardly. Her emotions were gentle, pleasant, caressing. He could send some fear and doubt still, under several layers of more positive feelings. He actually found himself searching her emotions on purpose, trying to take in every little detail, every hiccup, every whisper...
She talked about the paths, pointing to the most worn through one and he scrunched his nose in distaste. Then she changed direction and he nodded, chuckling as she said to keep hold of his hand. "Fine, if I have to," he joked. The view to die for sounded like just his cup of tea, and he forged ahead, pulling her with him, leading the way down the path she chose. after some time he fell back, letting her lead slightly.
She looked back to him, calling him out on his good mood. "Are you trying to steal my powers now," he commented, raising an eyebrow. Soon they reached a point to where she held up a tree branch, reaching out her other hand and offering to help, saying she would be there if he slipped. He smirked, shaking his head, "since when did you start taking care of me so much?" he teased, taking her hand, pulling toward her.
She was stronger than he originally expected, but he still tried to rely on his own strength more. He did shift his hand to her arm instead when he was about to fall briefly. "Are there trees to climb at the end?" he asked, standing close to her, gripping her arm and hand.

Irina smirked when he asked if she was trying to steal his powers. "Merely being perceptive, plus I like you better when you're in a good mood," she teased back, wrinkling her nose at him. She could tell he was trying to rely on his own strength on the trickier parts of the path, but he did end up gripping her arm at one point when he appeared to trip. Her heart skipped a beat, partly because she didn't want him tumbling down the cliff into the lake, partly because of how much she liked being this close to him. "Trees? What are trees?" she asked, frowning for a second then laughing. "You'll just have to wait and see," she said, squeezing his arm before moving her hand down to take his again.
They trudged forward until a massive oak tree emerged in front of them. Irina smiled happily at it; she had climbed that big oak within her first month at Hogwarts and tried to make pilgrimage to it at least once a month while the weather was appropriate for climbing. She remembered fondly how skinny and gangly she was, jumping up to the first branch and grasping it with the tips of her fingers, her feet danging just above the surface. She'd brought many of her friends to come climb here, mainly Decima, but she'd never brought a boy she thought of as more than just a friend before. Maybe because, other than James who didn't really count, Rina had not really gotten to this point yet. A few boys she kissed here and there for fun never went anywhere, but Dan was different. It was a different she could get used to.
Looking back at him, Irina dropped his hand rather reluctantly. "This is Bertha," she said, gesturing to the tree and laughing a little. "I first climbed this tree back in my first year, and only last year I made it to the top," she explained. She rubbed her hands together and grabbed that first branch; she had grown taller now so she didn't even have to stand on tiptoe to reach it. "Nearly all the branches are immensely steady, so it's perfect for climbing. Closer to the top the good branches are a bit further apart though so it's good to take your time," she said as she hoisted herself up with the grace and ease of an experienced climber. She hopped up a few more branches like a monkey until she was a third of the way up and sitting on the tree branch, legs swinging in front of her. She didn't need to take a break, but she always took her time climbing this particular tree; half the fun of climbing the oak was building the anticipation for that view at the end.

"I like it better when you're in a good mood. Puts me in a good mood," Dan countered. It was bad enough feeling the emotions of those around you but not only did he do that, but the feelings started to become his. At her little snarky comment about asking what trees were he pouted briefly, only to smile when she laughed and feeling that heart jolting thing again when she took his hand. He nodded, following her lead until the oak tree appeared. He let out a pleasured sigh at the sight of it. Irina dropped his hand and introduced the large tree, speaking about how she had climbed it before. He grinned as she grabbed the first branch and waited, "I'll follow your lead then," he mused, lifting himself as soon as she was higher up. He followed her path, trying to step close to where she stepped. He saw her stopped up ahead and hoisted himself up beside her, swinging his leg forward so his feet were dangling the same as hers. He reached a hand behind her, resting it on the branch on the other side of her hip. This caused him to have to lean in as he spoke, "it's a nice tree, this Bertha. Did you name her yourself?" he spoke softly, his eyes resting on hers. Irina Rose Krum

Irina smiled to herself with Dan’s mood comments. Of course her being in a good mood affected him positively, and with all the emotions running high from the Triwizard Tournament, it must be doubly as nice for him right now. Still, there were some seeds of self-doubt deep down inside her. She wanted to ask what him and Niko had talked about at the hospital, but knew that he needed to be the one to bring it up as it wasn’t her place.
She shuddered involuntarily as his hand snaked around and rested by her hip; she wanted nothing more than to just lean into him and stay there for a long while, but she resisted. Instead, she focused on his question, holding his gaze with her own. “Yes, I did. My friend Decima, she’s in my year but a different house, she and I discovered Bertha and we agreed that whoever could get to the top first would win the right to name her,” she explained, then smirked. “Obviously, I won. But we had a good laugh over the name Bertha so I decided that it would fit her. One Hogsmeade trip we’d overheard a large woman stubbornly refusing to move out of her seat, even though she was finished eating and the Three Broomsticks was packed with waiting patrons. We overheard the bartender call her Bertha, so it stuck. This tree is so old and large like her, stubbornly never moving. It’s a perfect fit.”
His face was so close to hers, but Irina did not make the move to kiss him. Not until later, hopefully. She knew that today they had to have that talk. The talk they had blissfully avoided for over a month, until Niko had discovered their secret. The past week of events had shown to Irina that she couldn’t keep this secret for much longer, and they had to figure this out. It couldn’t hurt to tease a little though. So Irina leaned in gently, bumping her forehead with his. “Come on, I promised you a view from the top, so you’re going to get it,” she whispered, drawing away from him though on the inside she was screaming in protest. In an instant she had leapt up to another branch, climbing quickly through the tree until she popped up at the top. She sighed contentedly as she felt the breeze pick up, wafting the scent of the forest through her nostrils. The caretaker was burning a brush fire; she could see the curling tendrils of smoke by the small hut on the edge of the forest. “If you spread out your arms when there’s a breeze, you feel like you’re flying,” she called to Dan. Making sure her footing was steady, she spread out her arms and tilted her head back, closing her eyes so the sun didn’t blind them. As the breeze rippled through her long hair, she smiled and laughed, happily lost in the moment. @daniel

Dan grinned when she explained how the trees name came to be, but he was also grinning at that spurt of emotions that came from her when he put his arm beside her. He felt that same shudder, that same flurry in his stomach. He laughed at the story of the large, stubborn, unmoving lady and nodded at the symbolism, "that's pretty clever. Bertha, it is," he patted the tree with the hand that was beside her and kept his face right where it was. He wanted to kiss her, of course he did, but he knew just as well as she did that they couldn't have any more of that without... talking. Before Nik got stabbed he avoided that religiously but now... things were different. He was different, and he couldn't wait to explain to her what that meant.
Then she leaned forward and he caught his breath as she bumped her forehead against his, whispering about getting to the top, and then moving away from him. He openly groaned in protest, but that grin never left his lips. Soon he was following her, slightly out of breath when they reached the top. She called down to him about the breeze and lifted her arms, causing his heart to jolt with worry for a moment. But he knew better. He knew Irina could handle herself.
He caught up to her, hooking his out foot in place and standing up straight, following her lead. A laugh escaped him then, too, considering the breeze felt amazing and her own sense of freedom and carelessness rippled through him. It was as if there was nothign else. After a moment, he turned to look at her, shaking his head a bit in unbelief at what he was about to say to this girl. "Hey Ri..." he started.

Leave them wanting more, isn’t that what the girls who got all the guys always said? Irina could tell that Dan was close to protesting her leaving his side, and it made her smirk a little to herself. “Don’t worry, Bertha is perfectly stable,” she reassured him as he joined her at the top. She and Deci had climbed this tree at the end of their sixth year, declaring themselves Queens of the World with joyful laughter. They had heard the quote in passing from the Muggle Studies professor, who was Muggleborn herself. It was from some movie about a big ship that sank in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean...the Titanic, that was it!
Dan started to speak, and Irina’s head jerked back up, her eyes finding his and never leaving. “Yes?” she whispered, her voice nearly lost over the breeze. This was it, she realized. The make or break of whatever this was that had been going on between them. She had only seen Dan briefly after they’d left St. Mungo’s; she hadn’t told him that she had seen him and Niko together when she had left the hospital with Louisa for coffee. It had been a private moment she should not have seen, but it looked emotional. In the perfect world, Irina imagined that Niko had tearfully given his blessing to Dan to date her, but in the real world she wasn’t sure if that had even happened. She realized she was holding her breath, and she let it out slowly. The anticipation was making her a little antsy; it was like ripping off a BandAid, she just wanted to hear what he had to say.

Dan jumped a little as Irina turned to look at him, the soft 'yes' escaping her. He took in a deep braeth and furrowed his eyebrows. He opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again, closed it, until eventually just started to chuckle, "this shouldn't be so hard, should it? Come here," he slowly and carefully moved toward her, gently catching her waist once she was in range. "Okay, I have something to say to you. So just don't talk for a second while I get this out," he was still grinning and chuckling in between words, trying to overcome how foolish he was about to sound. "Okay..." with one hand on her waist, he awkwardly placed the other hand on her shoulder.
"That moment when you heard about Nik being hurt and you collapsed... that was the worst moment of my life, Ri," he started to explain, his eyes boring into hers, "you didn't feel anything. It was like holding an empty shell. I thought you were dead, foolishly, for a second. Then I realized, that's what everyone else must fee like," he shook his head, "it was horrible, Ri. I'm not saying that I love my ability now, am grateful for it, or that I welcome it but... with you," he chewed his lip for a moment, his eyes narrowing as he figured out the best way to word all this. "I can't stand not feeling what you're feeling. Even if it's horrible. Irina," he carefully pulled her closer, slowly so she could catch her footing, "I want to feel everything you feel. The good, the bad, the... love whatever," he said those last few words very quickly, "and I don't want to hurt you ever again. I'm not saying this is going to be easy, and I'm not saying I wont' react badly sometimes, but when I do I want you to remember this. Remember that I love feeling what you feel, even if it hurts." He moved his hand from her shoulder to catch her own hand and then pulled it toward him, pressing her hand against his chest over his heart, "I'd rather hurt with you than hurt you..." the words all caught in his throat then and he swallowed hard.

Irina laughed nervously as he asked her not to talk. But as he spoke, Rina wouldn’t have been able to speak even if she tried. What he was saying, it was more than she was sure he’d ever spoken to anyone in one go in his life. And it was everything she could have ever wanted, and more. Her heart was racing, it even skipped a beat when he said love. He hadn’t outright said he loved her, but she hadn’t expected him too; it wasn’t his style. There was a time and a place for everything, and this was a huge step for them. She looked at her hand over his heart and was surprised to find it steady; she felt light-headed, like she was about to float away. Slowly, but surely, a smile spread across her face and finally she closed the gap between them and kissed him like she had never done before. She knew her footing was secure; Dan wouldn’t let her fall. She wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned into him, not wanting to break the moment.
She stepped back after some time, her face slightly flushed. She felt breathless, but she didn’t mind. “You know that sometimes that’ll mean nights like in the Hospital Wing?” she said finally, though that particular night had ended quite well. She gently reached up and played with one of the curls of his hair, lost in thought for a minute. “So...what does this mean for us, officially,” she asked with a teasing lilt, wanting to hear him ask the question out loud. She’d learned never to assume anything, even though he had made it abundantly clear how he felt and what he wanted with her.

Dan was surprised at how he was able to get through everything he wanted to say without her emotions interrupting him. He was pretty amazed at that, actually. He had felt them, of course, but they only fed his words rather than hindered them. He leaned in toward her as she leaned to him, wrapping both of his arms around her waist as they kissed. He sort of wished they weren't up in a tree, otherwise he'd just let them fall to the ground and never stop kissing. However, at the moment that was incredibly unsafe. Her emotions wrapped around his as they kissed, but there were so many he couldn't even name them. He didn't even bother to. Some were maybe a little deeper than he'd like to admit, and others were just as whimsical and lighthearted as they were moments ago with their hands spread to the wind. He found his heart rate picking up slightly and he smiled against her lips, so much that it was almost hard to keep the kissing up.
Finally, and sadly, she broke away, speaking of the night in the hospital wing when they had fought, and then asking what it meant for them officially. That word caused him to cringe just slightly, but he chuckled, "I guess that... hey, you're teasing me!" he could feel that mischievousness coming from her. Heck, he could see it in her face! He narrowed his eyes and shook his head for a moment before chuckling again and straightening out, his gaze softening. "I guess that means I want you to be my girlfriend. Though, that word seems a bit juvenile for... this," he cleared his throat, then pulled his hands away from her to spread them out to his sides, "I'm yours, if you'll have me."

Irina laughed; she agreed that their relationship (she could think of it as one now) was far more meaningful than just boyfriend and girlfriend, but that teenaged girl in her just had wanted to hear him say it out loud. And so he did. Tiny pinpricks of happy tears dotted the corner of Rina’s eyes. “I’ll have you, as all that you are, so long as you’ll have me as I am too,” she said softly, wiping her eye gently. She softly laughed and took both his hands in hers. “Let’s get down from here so I don’t knock us both out of the tree,” she whispered, squeezing his hands before she let go to climb down. She moved through the tree swiftly; she had never been so eager to get down from a free before. However, if any of this was going to continue, she’d rather be on solid ground. She knew of a happy medium place though not far from there.
She waited patiently as Dan came down from the treetops, and automatically took his hand. “Come with me,” she said, leading him further down the path. It took a turn and came closer to the lake’s edge; the path had a steep slope that could spell trouble with a slip, but Irina knew the path well and kept away from the tricky spots. She pointed to their destination ahead, a lone weeping willow tree, its’ vines hanging low over the water like a curtain. She pushed aside the vines and stopped; the vines created almost an outdoor room, blocking the interior from outside prying eyes. She turned around and smiled. “This one has no name, but I figured it’s probably a bit safer to do this here,” she murmured. She stepped forward and kissed him again. “Hi,” she said softly as she rested her forehead against his.

Dan felt a huge relief when Irina spoke, and he allowed her to take his hands in hers. Then she suggested getting down and he almost protested, but he could see the logic in it so he let it be. When she released him he groaned slightly in protest again, but she was climbing down quickly so he tried to follow suit. Soon they were on the bottom and she was taking his hand again. That come with me delivered from her lips was enough to send his mind reeling again. Her giddiness and expectancy mirrored his own and he allowed her to pull him along, not saying a word. He was used to not speaking, and that last little speech had left his mouth numb from not being used to that kind of thing.
She led the way and he followed her footsteps, assuring not to trip and die as they moved. Then he saw her point up ahead to the willow tree and he shook his head, eyes shining. "Brilliant," he muttered as she led him underneath. It was like having walls all around them, but they were still outdoors. In a tree, no less, which was kind of their tradition now. "Guess we'll have to name it ourselves," he muttered, tugging gently at her hand until she was kissing him, and then resting her forehead on his and saying that one small word, hi, and his stomach did another somersault.
He sighed, squeezing her hands, "what have I gotten myself into..." he muttered, before closing the gap between their lips again. He kissed her softly at first, before moving his hands out of hers. One hand wrapped around her until it pressed against the small of her back and the other hand found the back of her neck. He pulled her closer until just wrapping his arm around her waist and lifting her up off her toes, kissing her all the while as he did so.
After some time and minimal effort, he found his way to the tree with Irina in tow, leaning up against it he pulled her closer to him and continued to kiss her. Okay, maybe it was a little more that just kissing I mean come on. After another moment he gently pushed her back, just enough to look into her eyes. "I could get used to this boyfriend thing," he said, leaning in for more once again.

Irina didn’t have time to speak before Dan was kissing her again, nor did she want to. There was a time for speaking and a time for not, and this was definitely the latter. She grinned against his mouth as he lifted her up gently in the air; as if automatically her long legs wrapped around his waist. She didn’t break contact; she felt like she was on cloud nine, higher than a tree could ever take her. She felt dizzy from the feeling, but instead of feeling scared she felt elated. This rush was everything, she couldn’t get enough of it, or of him.
He pulled back slightly to look at her, and Irina let out a soft moan of protest as she unwound her legs from his waist to stand back on the ground. “Good,” was all she was able to say before they both moved at the same time to close the gap between them. Her hands wound their way into his hair as she pushed her body as close to his as was humanly possible. As if acting on their own, they made their way down his neck and chest to the lowest button on his shirt. Fumbling slightly with her trembling fingers, she unbuttoned his shirt and let her hands wander over his bare chest.
She felt Dan take a sharp intake of breath, and broke the kiss. She was breathing heavily, her heart pounding. She wanted this, she wanted to go further, but that wasn’t the way to make this particular relationship last. “You have no...no idea how hard it is to stop right now,” she whispered, her voice husky as she struggled to even out her breathing. She looked up into his eyes. “But I don’t want to overload you; Merlin knows I’m overloading myself right now,” she added with a shaky laugh. Taking a tiny step back, she reached forward and rebuttoned his shirt, except for the top button. “I really, really like you Dan. I want this to be….I don’t want to go too far too fast, and regret it after,” she told him slowly, sliding her hands into his and squeezing them. “I want you to tell me if you ever feel like you need a breather, or you need to slow things down,” she finished with a small sigh. “We can just sit here for awhile, if you want. Just sitting,” she suggested. She realized the neckline of her sweatshirt was halfway down her shoulder; giggling softly she shrugged it back on her shoulder to show him that she meant business.
