Everything was going to be okay. Max was awake and Odette and Aaron were there, so everything was going to be okay. No matter how many times she told herself that, though, Jamie couldn't bring herself to believe it. It was like something inside of her had shifted when she had seen Max on the stretcher, and it wasn't ever going to shift back. The Hufflepuff had decided to take some time outside of the hospital wing to try and clear her head and find a way to convince herself that everything was actually going to turn out fine. She was just walking in circles, making laps around the first floor. Every time she went by the hospital wing she'd glance in through the window to look for Max, but other than that, Jamie didn't stop walking. She desperately wanted to talk to one of her older siblings, but Jamie knew that they were more concerned with Max, and for good reason. Still, was it too much to ask that she get to hug her brother or sister?

It had been a whirlwhind of emotions these last few hours. Max had tried to kill herself. Odette was devastated. While she wasn't as close to Max as either Jamie or Aaron, she had still spent enough time around her to easily learn to love the girl and she was arguably the first sibling Odette had met and pretty much flat out liked and had no problems with. That was saying something, considering the beginning of her relationships with all of her other siblings. On top of that, her newest discovered half-brother had been selectr Tri-Wizard Champion of Durmstrang. Odette wasn't terribly close to Elias yet, but already his being chosen with the last name 'Greyback' was having an impact on her life. Odette had sat next to Max in a chair since the moment she had arrived, holding the Slytherin's hand until Odette herself had fallen asleep at Max's bedside for an hour or two.
When Odette had awoke, the room was quiet. The brunette looked around for any sign of movement or other life and then that was when she saw Jamie, outside the window. Instinctively, Odette got up and quietly exited the Hospital Wing to speak to her sister. Naturally, she was stopped by the Aurors just outside the doors. It took a moment, but she convinced one of them to be her escort if it was necessary. It was only minutes until they had come up upon Jamie. Odette stopped and looked at the Auror, raising an eyebrow as if to ask for a moment of privacy. The Auror obliged and stepped to the side, just out of sight and Odette approached Jamie. "Clearing your head?"

Apparently, the universe decided to cut Jamie her one break for the entire month, or maybe her entire life. Odette must have seen her when she looked in through the hospital wing window, Jamie realized as her sister approached, guarded by an Auror. Oops. Jamie probably shouldn’t have been pacing in the night without telling anyone about the purpose. Then again, most of the Aurors seemed to understand that she wasn’t in the soundest mental state at the moment, and that bothering her probably wouldn’t turn out well for anyone involved. Odette asked her if she was clearing her head, and Jamie managed a small nod. Her urge to hug one of her siblings had all but vanished. She was too cautious of scaring Odette to try to hug her. Jamie bent her head slightly, letting her hair fall over her face to hide the look in her eyes when she peered at her sister. “Elias said something to me, earlier.” She managed to whisper. “And it wasn’t very nice. And I don’t know if it’s true.” Jamie could feel tears prickling at the backs of her eyes. She thought she had been all cried out, but apparently there wasn’t such a thing. “And Max…” What was there left to say about Max? Odette knew, at least a little, what it felt like to watch her baby sister look so small and so helpless. “I kind of wish I could talk to my mom.” Jamie finally managed to sigh out. It hadn’t happened in a while, the urge to talk to her mom about something, but once she got the words out, Jamie realized how true it was. Khadija had been the one she had been going to when she needed motherly advice, but it seemed wrong to whine to her when her daughter was in a hospital bed. Jamie knew that, for all intents and purposes, she could talk to her mother, but the urge was more for comfort than anything, and Jamie knew that nothing her mother had to say would comfort her right now.

To say that Odette and Jamie's relationship had been a rocky one would be... an understatement, to say the least. They'd been through a lot. One of the first few times they had met, Odette had managed to make Jamie cry. But Odette knew now that Jamie only cried when it was something worth crying over. And this whole ordeal was certainly worth shedding a couple puddles of tears. Especially for someone who loved their family as much as Jamie did. That was why it had been hard seeing Jamie when Odette first got there... she hadn't been crying, and somehow Odette had a feeling she just couldn't anymore. But she could still tell Jamie was hurting.
Odette's head tilted to the side when Jamie's hair fell in front of her face. Elias had said something? Odette raised an eyebrow at this. Odette didn't know her newest half-brother all that well yet, but from what she could tell she liked him. He had met her at a good time, at least. Unlike the rest of her siblings, who had been unexpected surprises. Elias, while still unexpected, hadn't gotten it as hard as perhaps Jamie or Adrian did. So Odette took his entering her life a lot easier. "What did he say?" She asked softly. Whatever it was, Odette had a feeling it had to have been said when the two of them had emotions running high. Jamie and Elias were both so naturally kind, Odette doubted the two could ever intentionally hurt someone.
When Jamie said Max's name, Odette's brow furrowed in sadness. Quickly, her arms reached out and enveloped Jamie in a hug without another word. It was something that the both of them probably needed. When Jamie sighed about her mom, Odette pulled away but held on to Jamie's shoulders. "I know how that feeling is," she said, nodding. It was a bit of a touchy subject, since Odette knew that Jamie's mom had lied to her for so long. "But Jamie, if you are ever feeling like you need to talk to someone about something, about anything, I'm here. Aaron is here. Max is here. We love you," she said, looking in her younger sister's eyes.

When Odette asked Jamie what Elias had said, her grip on her emotions began to slip any further. It almost didn’t feel worth repeating, but Jamie had already said something about it, and it was pretty obvious that she was upset about it. She didn’t want to have to have an answer wheedled out of her. “H-he called me Queen Jamie.” She stuttered. It hadn’t been the words so much as the tone. “And it was like he thought that I thought I was somehow better than him because I wouldn’t answer his stupid question about my stupid favorite color when my sister was dying in the next room, and I can’t Odette. I can’t do this anymore. I can’t love someone who gets angry and makes me hurt just because he didn’t get his way.” If there was any legitimate reason in the world to tell your brother to leave you alone, it was because your sister was dying in the next room, and Elias was just being a brat because she wouldn’t entertain his conversation. “And he doesn’t even know her. He doesn’t know her, but she is my baby sister and when I thought that the world was falling down she held it up and now I can’t do the same for her and I – I –” The tears had been held at bay by the words frantically spilling out of Jamie’s mouth and her resolve not to cry, but the dam burst all at once, and they began to flow again, hot and thick and fast. Odette took Jamie into her arms, and the Hufflepuff accepted the hug, because there was nothing left to do but let herself be comforted.
“I know you’re h-here.” Jamie said, stumbling over her sobs. “But you’re just going to hate me again because I hate Elias and of course I’m never allowed to hate anyone because I’m Jamie.” And it was exhausting, to have to love everyone that Jamie loved without complaint. “And I can’t make you choose between the two of us, and even if I did you’d probably choose him because you like him and you didn’t like me this quickly and I’m always supposed to be the bigger person.” Jamie didn’t think her words were making sense anymore, but she was hysteric. She didn’t know how to live anymore.

Odette had been through traumatic loss before. When she lost her mom, she could remember shutting out everyone but Victoire. It had taken a while for her to start opening back up to others again. Ever since then, she had seen others suffer through similar pain enough to know that everyone processes tragic events like this one differently. Luckily, they were fortunate enough to still have their sister. But it was still scary. So as Jamie explained to Odette all that was going on, Odette tried to keep an open mind and an open ear to what her sister had to say.
"Well," Odette finally began after a silent moment. "If I've learned anything in my twenty-one years, it's that every handles these situations differently." She explained, wrapping an arm around her sister and pulling her close. "Now, I don't know Elias very well yet, but I do know that Max is his sister, too. And I imagine he probably felt so out of place in a room full of people that are his half-siblings that he doesn't even know. Yet, he shares a connection with." Odette had had so much time to think about her relationship with her siblings now, that she felt she could finally see it from a good light. "And while I still don't know him all that well, I think he is a good person. And I think he was only trying to make you feel better and get to know you. Granted, perhaps his timing was a little off. But he probably has never had to deal with any of this. Just like you haven't." She gave Jamie a quick squeeze.
When Jamie began to cry, Odette pulled her even closer and into a tight hug as she held her sister and just let her cry. Odette hadn't seen Jamie cry since she arrived, though she had a feeling she already had. So, Odette felt that Jamie needed this. "Hey, hey," Odette cooed, rubbing the back of Jamie's blonde head. (Maybe it was the new mother in her that was causing her to act all motherly all of a sudden.) "I don't hate anyone. Elias doesn't hate anyone. And I don't think you do, either," she said softly. "Do you remember how much I couldn't stand you before a few weeks ago?" Odette was very cruel to Jamie. But now it was like their whole relationship had taken a three-hundred-and-sixty degree turn. "You've just got to give it time. He's... well, he's your brother. And hey, I still haven't even spoken to Adrian... like, once. But, if something were to happen... at the end of the day, he's my brother. And... well, I love him." Things had certainly changed in Odette's life, but honestly, she wouldn't change any of it.

“He can’t keep changing his mind!” Jamie snapped. “One moment Maria is the most important thing to him because they grew up together and saying that blood doesn’t make family, and the next he decides that because he happens to share a quarter of his DNA with Max, he deserved to be waiting beside her in the hospital!” Why couldn’t he just choose one and stick with it!? Instead Elias just chose whichever was more convenient for the argument he was trying to make at the moment. Jamie had always been adamant that blood made family just as much as experience did, and she had tried that with Elias, but then he had snubbed her. Jamie would be the first to admit that she had thin skin, but even when Adrian had avoided her, he hadn’t made a point of hurting her. Odette had, but then she had apologized, and Elias seemed to have no intention of doing that.
Odette said that she thought Jamie didn’t hate anyone, and the Hufflepuff made a frustrated noise. “But what if I want to!?” She half-sobbed, half-screamed. “I want to hate him because then it wouldn’t hurt so bad that he hates me! And I want to hate someone or something so that I don’t always feel like this!” Like there was always something brewing beneath the surface, like she had bottled up every bad thing she had ever done so that no one could ever see how bad of a person she was. Jamie was terrified of becoming like her father, and every time she felt something even remotely resembling anger or hate or even just mild dislike, she shoved it down and pretended it never existed. It wasn’t healthy, and while it had worked for her when she was younger, now that she was growing up and life was a lot more complicated, she couldn’t take it anymore. The place she had stored all of her bitterness was filled up, and she didn’t know what to do with it.
When Odette said that she loved Elias, Jamie ripped herself out of her sister’s arms. Odette hadn’t even said that she loved Jamie (because confessing that her family loved her definitely didn’t count), and here she was, confessing to loving Elias? Jamie would be lying if she said it didn’t hurt. Everyone who loved her seemed to love Elias more, and she didn’t understand. She didn’t understand anything, but she was too messed up to try to figure any of it out. Instead she just stared at her sister, face set into a stubborn line as she tried not to let Odette see that she had just taken Jamie, already broken and battered, and completely shattered her.

The whole sibling thing was still oh-so new to Odette, but perhaps that was why she could see why Jamie was so upset. Just as well, she could see why Elias could be wishy-washy about his attitude toward Jamie. "Jamie, this is still very new to him. He's going to say a lot of things that may sound different because he doesn't even know what he thinks himself," she said, firmly yet trying to stay neutral and calm. It was clear to Odette since the beginning that Jamie's feelings were always a bit stronger than others around her, but there was nothing wrong with that. To Odette, it seemed she just cared deeply about those she cared about.
Odette wondered for a moment that if she hadn't cut herself off from really connecting with people after her mother died, if she would be as loving and caring as Jamie seemed to be. But then she decided she couldn't. Jamie was a whole kind of different as far as her emotions and level of caring. It would be hard to meet someone who cared for others more than Jamie Greyback. "And that's fine, you can hate if you need to," she said looking at Jamie in the eyes, not minding that Jamie was nearly a mess of sobs and screams. "But you have to be sure it's someone who is deserving of that hate. For the right reasons." Odette herself concentrated all negative feelings she felt toward one person and one person only and that was the man who had given her the connection she had with the girl standing in front of her.
Jamie tore herself away from Odette then and Odette's brow furrowed into a look that was a mixture of confused and slight frustration. After a brief moment, she let out a breath and closed her eyes before looking back at Jamie in the softest way she felt she had ever mustered. "Jamie," Odette finally spoke after a moment of silence. "You are one of the most deeply caring people I have ever met," she continued on slowly. "And I think it goes without saying that sometimes, you act a little rashly because you just feel... so much. And there's nothing wrong with that. But, you need to stop looking at everything from a point of view of someone acting like a victim. You are better than that. And there are people who are actually suffering, like Max, who need you to be stronger than this and take a stand. Be the bigger person." Odette had never spoken so candidly with Jamie before, but... it felt nice to finally be able to. "I know you can be so strong, Jamie. And, I think it's kind of obvious how much you mean to me. And... if it isn't," she gave her sister a little light-hearted smirk. "Go ask any of our other siblings if I give them nearly as hard a time as I do you."

Jamie knew that this was new to Elias. It had been new to her, too, but had she gone around insulting her siblings because they weren’t in the mood for talking? No, no she hadn’t. Jamie blew out a breath. She wasn’t getting anywhere with Odette, and that was frustrating. She was screaming, and her sister either couldn’t hear her, or wouldn’t. Jamie didn’t know which was worse – to be willfully ignored or not to be heard at all.
“Damn it, Odette!” Jamie hissed. “No one deserves hate.” Jamie believed that, probably more than she believed anything else. That was why she had kept all of hers inside, why she had felt like a despicable person for hating her mother. Like Odette said, Jamie felt so much, and guilt was one of the emotions that she felt the most of all. She had been numb after ruining Matt’s life by biting him, and even number when she had seen Max being taken away on the stretcher, because she should have done something. She didn’t want to end up hating the wrong person, which was why it had taken so long to settle on hating Elias. And why, even now, Jamie felt like an awful person for hating her brother.
Odette went off on a rant about how Jamie ought to be the bigger person, be stronger, be better, and the Hufflepuff just shook her head. This was what she was afraid of when she had started the conversation. “People don’t change.” She said flatly. “You either get me now, like this, broken heart and all, or you don’t get me at all.” Jamie hated ultimatums. She hated even more that she knew what Odette was going to say. Her sister was going to say that she was being selfish and immature, that she would rather not have Jamie at all than have this deeply flawed version of her. This was one of the many times in her life that Jamie wished that she could just walk away, that she could leave people behind before they got the chance to hurt her, but however angry she was at Odette right now, Jamie couldn’t. She couldn’t just walk away. “And – and Aaron, he doesn’t need me. You don’t need me. Elias doesn’t need me. Adrian doesn’t need me. Max…” Max didn’t need her either. Her baby sister thought that she needed Jamie, but she was wrong. “Max doesn’t need me, either. Maybe it’s better for you not to have me, Odette. Not to have to deal with this.” With her explosions, with her emotions, with the Jamieness of it all. “I’m tired, Odette.” She was tired of being the strong one, and no matter how many times she said that, no one ever seemed to hear her. She had been so tired for so long, and now it had come down to this, and Jamie just didn’t know. She didn’t know if she was wanted, or needed, or when she would finally get some rest.

Odette knew her younger sister seemed to have the same stubbornness that Odette did, but she just never really knew to what degree. She was seeing it now, though. Odette made a sound like a scoff when Jamie said no one deserved hate. "I'm glad you can think that way, Jamie. I really am," she looked at her sister. "But I disagree. What Fenrir has done... he deserves hate. And nothing anyone could ever say could convince me otherwise. So, yes. Some people do deserve hate." Odette crossed her arms and then become suddenly conscious of the small thing inside of her that was growing. She reminded herself she had to stay calm; for the baby. And for Jamie.
When Jamie said "people don't change," Odette had to try hard not to let Jamie see just how much that statement stung her. "People change, Jamie," she said, looking at her sister with an intense yet somewhat hurt look. "If people didn't change, do you think I would be standing here in front of you? Do you think I would have come to Max's side a few months ago? Because I wouldn't have," she said, her voice slightly more harsh than she had intended. Odette closd her eyes and let out a deep breath, taking a moment before she looked back at Jamie. "Jamie. Everyone is tired right now. I've been tired for years. I'm going to tell you this right now, and I hope you take it to heart," she took a moment to really look at her sister. "Life is hard. And if you think you've got it bad now, you won't make it out in the real world. You've been strong, but you need to be stronger. You have to stop looking for the bad in everything but soon enough, that's all that's going to be left." It was weird, but Odette felt the presence of tears beginning to prickle in her eyes. She hadn't realized it until she heard herself say those words, but she was honestly quite scared herself to bring a new life into this darkening world.

Odette said that she was glad that Jamie could see that their father didn’t deserve hate, but Jamie didn’t believe her. Her sister obviously hated their father, and she just couldn’t see how anyone could believe something that strongly and not look down on someone else for believing the exact opposite. And then Odette insisted that people changed, and Jamie just shook her head. Her sister wasn’t going to believe whatever she said, but that wasn’t true. People didn’t change – they just showed the parts of them that had always been there before, maybe just hidden. And then it came to life, and, and…
“What do you mean?” Jamie asked, voice cracking. “What in the real world is going to be worse than watching myself rip someone’s life out of their hands and being powerless to do anything about it? What in the real world is going to be worse than knowing that my little sister tried to kill herself and I couldn’t do anything to stop it? What sort of world are you living in, Odette?” Jamie licked her lips in an attempt to return some moisture to them, but instead found the taste of blood from where her lip had apparently split from its dryness. “Because I don’t want to live in that world.” She didn’t want to live in a world where there were worse things than death and dying, where people who had done so much without breaking were expected to hold onto even more. She didn’t want to live in that world, and if that meant living in a world without Odette…Jamie hated to give either of them that ultimatum, but she couldn’t do this right now, couldn’t deal with the idea that after everything she had done, she still wasn’t good enough for her sister. She couldn’t deal, so she was going to do what Odette always seemed to do when things were hard: she was going to run away. And if her sister wanted to criticize her for that, fine. She’d be a hypocrite, but that was fine. Jamie pivoted on her heel, straightened her shoulders, and began walking away, determined not to look back.

Odette stared at Jamie with a straight, emotionless face aside from the tears that slowly began to roll down her cheeks. Jamie had been through a lot, that much was true, but there were worse things ahead. And Odette didn't like that she had to be the one to break it to Jamie, but someone had to. "You're almost of age, Jamie," Odette said, her voice clearly sounding exhausted from the argument. "Our world could be on the brink of a new war. You haven't seen anything yet," Odette shook her head and when she saw Jamie put her foot into the ground and turn to walk away, Odette didn't stop her. Instead, she let her half sister walk off, just like they were back at square one.
