Since her last interaction with Ondina and Scorpius... Rose had decided to bury herself in responsibilities so that she could avoid human interaction with... a lot of people. She had begun studying for her classes ten times harder than usual, she took her Head Girl patrols way too seriously, and when she actually found free time she buried her face into a book and made herself invisible. She didn't want to speak to Scorpius and she didn't want to speak to anyone about Scorpius.
How could he kiss her? As Rose sat out in the cool autumn air in the courtyard with a book in front of her face to hide herself, she couldn't help but think that. How could Scorpius kiss Ondina after what they had said to one another in the cupboard last year? He had said he loved her... and she had been certain he meant it. She meant it. And if he did too, then why was he going around and kissing other girls? Name his ex-girlfriend who unfortunately just happened to be Rose's cousin? When Ondina had spilled the beans... Rose was heartbroken. She had been flat out angry at first that he hadn't even told her. When did it happen? Had he kissed her before or after they went on their hike? How was she supposed to know? She almost didn't want to find out.
So, here she was. Sitting in the corner of the courtard with a book inches from her face that she wasn't really reading. Hiding from the world, and hiding from Scorpius.

Scorp was an idiot. He knew that. He knew that better than anyone else did. It had been a while since the incident with Ondina on the staircase. Ondina had told Rose about the kiss this summer, and Scorp had froze on the spot and lost Rose before he could explain. Then they had been avoiding each other... rather, her avoiding him. It seemed like she'd been avoiding everyone, actually. He felt terrible, completely and utterly terrible. Hopeless, too.
But, as fate would have it, the opportunity presented itself eventually...
He found her in the courtyard, her face completely hidden by a book. He watched her from afar for a moment, long enough that if she had been reading she would have had to turn the page by now. So, she wasn't reading. She was hiding. He understood why, of course. The guy who supposedly loved her had kissed his ex girlfriend, her cousin, Ondina, even after he had told her how he felt. He hated that guy. He really hated that gut.
But he couldn't not take this opportunity. As much as he didn't deserve her. He rushed forward quickly and sat beside her, put his arm around her, and pulled her close to him. "Don't run away, please," he pleaded under his breath.

Rose had been so focused on hiding from anyone looking for her that she had forgotten she was trying to look busy. So, as a result Rose had sat there staring at the same page for twenty minutes now, not turning the page once. Obviously, that was a dead giveaway but Rose didn't even notice. Her mind was reeling and she felt a pit at the bottom of her stomach that felt like a fiery lump of sadness and anger. She tried to focus hard on making that feeling go away, that was, until she felt someone sit down beside her and wrap their arm around her, pulling her close. Immediately she knew who it was.
Rose wasn't sure if she was more angry or sad, but either way she didn't move a muscle. Instead, she felt tears welling up in her eyes. She began to blink ferociously to stop them from running down her cheeks. "Scorpius Malfoy," she said through gritted teeth. "If you don't get your arm off of me, I swear I will hex it off." She tried to sound as threatening as possible, however all the while she did not fight him when he pulled her close. She let him, even though she stayed stiff and still.

Scorp wasn't surprised by her words, but he hated to see her eyes misting over like that. "Then hex me, Rose Weasley. I'm not going anywhere," she said firmly, holding on tight. He sighed, using his free hand to reach around and gently touch her chin, attempting to turn her to face him. "Come on, Rose. You've got to talk to me," he pleaded, his eyes started to mist over as well. "I'm an idiot, I know that. But I'm even more of an idiot for not knowing how to fix this. And I don't know. But you, Rose, you know everything. Tell me what to do," he knew he was begging and normally he would have found that beneath him but this was different now. He was different. She was different. They were different. If her eyes managed to find his then he'd hold her gaze as best he could, trying to show all the regret and love in his own eyes for her to see. "Don't leave me like this," he pleaded once again, softer this time.

Of course he wasn't going anywhere. Of course. Rose turned her head away from him, her hands holding her book falling down as she did so. She didn't even want to look at him. He could beg and plead her to look at him all he wanted. Right now, she felt that if she looked at him she would be sick. She should have seen this coming with him. She felt utterly betrayed. It was just her luck that after all those years and then finally confessing her feelings to him, which he had said he returned, that he would go and kiss someone else. Especially his ex. Her cousin.
The last words out of Scorpius's mouth ignited some fire in Rose, it seemed, for her head turned around to face him so fast she felt dizzy. "Don't leave you?" She repeated, her eyes narrowed at him yet still threatening to spill over with tears. "I don't have anything to say to you, Scorpius!" She looked at him somewhat incredulously then, as if she couldn't believe he thought she could fix this. Rose felt powerless. What he had done, he had done all on his own. And she was broken.
Rose looked down at her lap, still not fighting away from the tight grasp Scorpius had over her. After a moment, she looked up at him. "Why," she demanded, more than questioned. "Why did you do it?"

She turned back to face him, Scorp knew that he was about to be given hell. Her eyes narrowed and her words were burning through him like molten lava. She said that she didn't have anything to say to him, but he didn't believe that. So, he waited patiently for her to get the words out that he knew she wanted to say. She looked down into her lap but he kept his eyes on her, waiting for her to speak. The wait was killing him, but eventually she looked back at him and the first word came. Why. He wasn't surprised that that was it, and he waited for the rest,
Once it was out, he took in a deep breath, loosening his grip on her in hopes that she wasn't going anywhere now. "I used to get lost, Rose. It was easy, when she wanted to make it happen. Like a puppet," he admitted, wanting to look away but not letting himself. "I should have used my head, like I'm so used to doing, but I let myself give into the normalcy... the comfortableness of it," he paused. "It's not a good excuse, Rose. But I promise that's gone now," he removed his arm from her completely in order to take one of her hands holding it with both of his. "It's all gone now, Rose. I love you. I love you."

Rose felt so confused. She felt betrayed, of course, but then she had to remind herself that she and Scorpius were never together. They had decided it best to wait. But then again, he had said he loved her in that cupboard during the attacks. So, when he kissed Ondina, what did that then mean? Rose so badly wished it had not happened, she wished she could forget it but she didn't know if she could. She stared angrily at Scorpius as he explained his reasoning as to why he did kiss Ondina and when he had finished, stating he loved her, Rose really wanted to believe him. But she couldn't.
The Ravenclaw could not help the eye roll when Scorpius finished, taking one of her hands in his. She looked away from him and shook his head. "It isn't a good excuse," she said, even though he clearly knew that. "It is no excuse and I can't believe you did that. And had the nerve to go on that hike with me after and... and..." she couldn't help it; the tears started falling down her cheeks now. "I can't forgive you for this Scorpius. I opened up to you, finally, after all these years and for what?" She tore her hand away from him and looked at him with an angry, furrowed brow.

Still, with all his words, they had no where to land. She was still angry, and he expected that, but he really hoped otherwise. She said she couldn't forgive him and those tears fell down her cheeks and Scorp felt his heart sink into his stomach. He brought his hand back when she let go and looked down at it, taking in a deep breath. "Okay," he said softly. One more deep breath, then he looked back up at her, "here's my proposition. The Yule Ball, Christmas Night, I will wait for you by the tallest Christmas tree," he explained, his voice becoming oddly steady. "I will stand there until you come but if you don't, I'll stand there all night waiting. I'll give you to the time to think about this and... try to find something worth saving here," his brow furrowed, "because I think it is. Worth saving, I mean." He stood then, stepping back. He opened his mouth to speak and then closed it again before turning and leaving her. She needed space, and he had to give it, even if he hated that.

When Scorpius's hand fell, Rose found herself wanting to grab it and pull it back to her again. But she fought that instinct. She was mad at him, and he needed to understand why. When Scorpius took in a deep breath, Rose kept her head down but she listened intently, glancing toward him slightly. He was... going to wait for her? As his voice sounded more steady, Rose found herself slowly turning her head up to look at him. He thought there was something worth saving. Was there something worth saving? Rose couldn't help but wonder that as Scorpius stood up; and she watched his feet as he stepped back. She couldn't bring herself to respond or even look up at him until he was gone. Rose knew she had to think about what she was going to do... she really didn't want to even have to think about this, but... maybe there was something worth saving.
