The Yule Ball had arrived. The rest of Christmas Day had been a total blur for Lucy Weasley, who had been waiting with great anticipation for the evening to begin. She couldn't remember if she had slept the previous night, but what was around the corner was too wonderful to think about anything else. As soon as it wouldn't be considered too over-eager, she had changed into her gown—one of a sleek grey-green material that fit close to the contours of her body—and fixed her hair into a cascade of waves that fell against the side of her face and past her right shoulder.
It had been a few weeks since Lucy had last seen Asa Creevey, her date for the night, and she hoped that they hadn't become too busy with work and had decided to stand her up. Asa wasn't that type of person, though; they stayed true to their word, and that was as much reassurance as Lucy needed. Waiting outside the doors to the Great Hall, she searched the faces of the arrivals from the Ministry and the rest of the “outside world”. As Molly Annelise Weasley's twin sister, it would have looked horrible for her not to have her date there, and Lucy crossed her fingers as she tried to look beyond the tops of various heads and look as poised as possible while doing it.

Asa hadn’t been sure of what to wear that night. They had an equal amount of masculine and feminine formalwear, though they hardly got a chance to wear any of it. Since Lucy was wearing a dress, Asa supposed it was for the better that they wore something more masculine, and let the reporters that would inevitable be watching Lucy assume that they were a male. While dress robes were the anticipated dress, Asa had decided that it wouldn’t be amiss to wear something more in the Muggle realm of fashion. They had pulled on a nicely tailored suit and then spent an unreasonable amount of time looking at themself in a mirror. They looked…good. After tying their tie neatly, Asa decided that they were presentable enough. Getting into the school wasn’t easy by any means, since they had to be checked for any contraband material, but eventually, Asa was allowed in. They strolled into the Great Hall with their hands in their pockets, projecting a nonchalance they in no way felt, scanning the crowd for Lucy.
She wasn’t hard to find, and she was beautiful. It was like the crowd parted before Asa, intent on letting them reach their date. They adjusted their tie and then strode forward through the gaps in between people, finally halting in front of Lucy and losing their breath all over again. “Hi.”

“Hi.” Just the sound of Asa’s voice was enough to make Lucy melt. They had found her before she had had the chance to find them, and they looked as handsome as she had ever seen them. Lucy wasn’t shocked to see them in something more masculine; since Asa was agender, she had more or less expected that they would wear something like what they had on. Their outfit was more Muggle than magical, though there seemed to be enough variety—between the students and the Ministry officials—they wouldn’t stand out extraordinarily, though it was probably enough to get people talking.
Talking, however, seemed to be impossible for Lucy, who was so stunned by her date that she didn’t think that she could string words together into a coherent sentence. She hadn’t intended to be so tongue-tied, yet Asa had that entrancing effect on her; whether it was because they had some Veela heritage or just because she liked them that much, she didn’t know, nor did it matter.
“Hi back,” she smiled softly. Lucy wanted to go into the Great Hall to watch her sister dance, hoping that Anna would do well enough that she wouldn’t have to make fun of her with Ondina later that night, though she was tempted to stay put and soak up Asa’s presence for as long as she could. “You look… Wow.”

Lucy seemed stunned, and Asa was inclined to believe that it was a good thing. The way she was looking at them…Asa had never seen anyone look at anyone that way before, let alone have someone look at them like that. It was strange, but also really, really nice. They smiled a small smile at Lucy, surprised by how quiet her voice was. Then, at the compliment about how they looked, Asa let out a nervous laugh, running their hand through their hair. “You look wow, too.” They said, since it was a pretty good description of how they felt about Lucy right now. This whole thing was just wow. Like a fairy tale. Without thinking, they bent down and kissed Lucy softly on the cheek. If this was a fairy tale, then Lucy was the princess, and Asa was the knight in shining armor. They liked that thought.
“Do we need to go in?” Asa asked. They knew that Anna was dancing first, but if she had already danced, or if they had time before the first dance started, Asa wasn’t going to object to standing there, looking at Lucy, forever.

Asa said that she looked “wow”, too. At least she wasn't the one who was at a loss for words. Lucy wondered if there could have been a more perfect match than the two of them. They had only been dating officially since the day in Hogsmeade when she had asked Asa to the ball, but was it rushing things to say that she hoped that they would be together forever?
And then Asa bent down and kissed her on the cheek. It was sealed. The other girls she knew could keep their fleeting romances with boys who only ever lasted about a week. Even some of the couples that surrounded them would be broken up, she bet, by the time the clock struck midnight on the first of January, if not by the end of the night, as it was. Real love was alive and well, Lucy thought, and she and Asa just… fit.
“Do we need to go in?”
Considering that Anna, as one of the Champions, had open the ball with the traditional Champions' Waltz, Lucy decided that they probably did need to make their way into the Great Hall. “Yeah,” she smiled. “I guess we should.” Hopefully, they would get a decent view of Anna, though Lucy wasn't going to complain if they did end up towards the fringes. It would be that much easier for them to sneak a few more kisses in.

Being surrounded by people was not normally Asa’s favorite thing, but Lucy was their shield, keeping them from all the uncomfortable feelings that came with being watched by many unfamiliar eyes. Even though Lucy probably felt the same way they did about the people and the waltz and everything else, she still agreed to go inside with a smile, and Asa smiled back. Anna looked beautiful in her dress, Asa thought as they watched their girlfriend’s sister promenade around the floor with her boyfriend. Anna had seemed excited about this moment in her letters to Asa, so they were glad to see that she seemed to be having a good time. At least nothing was going horribly wrong that Asa could see.
“Your sister looks wonderful.” Asa told Lucy in a low voice, not wanting to seem rude or talk over the music of the Champion’s Waltz. “Though not as wonderful as you.” They added, not able to resist the chance to assert Lucy’s beauty. Asa didn’t want to make a big deal about comparing the twins, but at sometimes it was difficult, especially since they didn’t want Lucy to doubt their love of her. “How long does this dance go?” Asa murmured. They loved to watch others dance, of course, but the whole reason they had come was to be able to dance with Lucy, and talk with her, and they couldn’t do either of those things when the Champions were doing their special dance.

Hearing Asa say that her twin sister looked “wonderful” made Lucy bristle, though she tried not to show it. Anna didn't look half bad, but it was the idea of her partner's possibly finding her sister more attractive than she that made her uncomfortable. She didn't really care to watch Anna and her boyfriend—some Beauxbatons boy whose name escaped her—for any longer than the waltz.
“Though not as wonderful as you,” Asa added, and Lucy blushed. That was better. Because of the compliment that Asa had given her, she was smiling; however, she kept sneaking glances at Asa from the corner of her eye. They were dating, she reminded herself—confirmed with champagne and everything—and she needed to stop acting as though she didn't know that Asa reciprocated her feelings for them.
“How long does this dance go?” Asa then asked, and Lucy was glad to know that she wasn't the only one who was impatient.
“It's just one song, I think? Another minute, maybe?” she hesitated, whispering and wondering if they should take a few steps back so that they wouldn't distract from the attention on the Champions.

Lucy blushed at their compliment, and Asa, in turn, felt their cheeks begin to warm. They had a feeling this night was going to be a nonstop circle of compliments and blushing, and they were one hundred percent okay with that. Was it wrong to want a night where all that they felt was good feelings? No, Asa thought, absolutely not. It wasn’t like they were deprived of that sort of thing, normally, but it could be sad to work at an orphanage day in and day out and see kids not be adopted, or to watch the people that they loved struggle with life. Even one night of absolute happiness was enough to offset all of that pain.
Asa nodded when Lucy said there was probably a minute left in the song. It was going to be the longest minute in their life, they were sure. They wanted to get dancing! Asa adjusted their tie nervously, and then, mercifully, the Champion’s waltz stopped. “Let’s go!” They said, offering their arm to Lucy to join them on the floor as soon as the first notes of the next song began.

Lucy found it amazing how easily she could remain fixated on even the smallest things about Asa. While they waited for that first waltz to reach its end, Asa was fiddling with their tie. Finding it too cute to interrupt, Lucy tried not to call attention to the fact that she was looking at what Asa was doing; she didn't want to make them even more nervous.
As soon as the music stopped, Asa was ready to go. They offered their arm to her, which Lucy took, her hand in the crook of their elbow. She could feel Asa's excitement then—however nervous it might have been—which made her smile broadly as they walked onto the floor together.
The next song had begun to play, and Lucy wasn't sure if she would need to lead Asa or not. With how anxious they had been in awaiting the song, she didn't mind either way; it wasn't as though she particularly cared about gender roles. If anyone thought it strange that she—being the one in the dress—was leading her partner in their tux, they would have to take it up with her later, preferably when Asa wasn't around.
“Ready, Asa?” she asked, watching as the other couples began to get into their frames. Upstaging her twin might have been not-so-far back in her mind, but Lucy wasn't even focused on what Anna was doing.
