It had worked; Andromeda had not expected a thing and Phil had successfully surprised his love at the Yule Ball, with some assists by Susan and Headmaster Longbottom. Truth be told Susan had been a little concerned that something would happen; someone would have accidentally spilled the beans to Andy, she would have seen Phil by accident before the dancing started. Fortunately, it went as smoothly as possible. Susan had finished the dance with the Headmaster; a feat far less awkward due to her dance skills and the conversation they had had regarding the spiders of Desirae Rousseau. She felt much more comfortable around him than perhaps a different professor.
Susan walked outside to the Courtyard; the twinkling lights surrounding the area had been one of Susan’s touches and she was glad to see they had turned out so nicely. She walked closer, her burgundy dress trailing in the leaves as she looked at the decor. It would have been perfect, if only Casey Finnegan had been there. Alas, her boyfriend was currently making up a shift at Saint Mungos and would not be joining her that evening. A small wind whipped through the air, and Susan reached up to cover her arms with a delicate shiver, not noticing someone approaching her from behind.

@susanvictoria crossing the gardens, casey walked with his hands in his pockets. he could feel the box that he had placed in one of them, within it held a secret that he would be revealing to susan later that night. he could see her now, standing there illuminated by the lights that had been placed around the garden for the special occasion and he couldn't help but take it all in. he didn't think she'd ever looked more beautiful in any time that he had seen her. though he had always thought of her as beautiful, even before he had worked up the courage to ask her out. his feet made little noise as he kept walking, a smile creeping onto his face as he stopped a few feet from her. she seemed lost in her thoughts so there was every chance he hadn't been heard. he wondered how the surprising of andy had gone, he hoped phil had been able to give her the gift of being surprised, something he was hoping to give susan tonight. "so did the surprise go well?"

Susan heard a voice behind her, and for a moment she tensed up. But wait, that voice sounded familiar...she turned around to see Casey, looking devilishly handsome with his hands in his pockets, smiling at her. Her own smile lit up her face as she let out a tiny squeak and rushed forward, throwing her arms around him. “You came!” she exclaimed happily, pulling back so she could lean forward to kiss him fully on the lips. “What are you doing here? I thought you had to work?” she asked when she finally broke apart, arms still on his shoulders. She couldn’t stop smiling; she was so happy Casey was there standing in front of her right now. She couldn’t help but lean in and kiss him again. He was recovered from dragonpox and she was feeling fit and healthy, a nice change from their numerous maladies whenever they were together, so Susan was going to make the most of it. “Oh! Yes, the surprise went well, Andy had NO idea and she cried and was happy and they’re off somewhere on their own making up for lost time I’m sure,” she added with a giggle.

@susanvictoria “You came! What are you doing here? I thought you had to work?” he chuckled as he lifted his hand to touch her cheek and he brushed his thumb over her skin softly, careful to not ruin the make up she had put on her face. though in his opinion she didn't need it, he'd seen her without it and while she was a knock out with it on, she was beautiful without it too. "i lied. i wanted to plan my own surprise." he said with a smile as he brushed the tip of his nose against hers and stood there with her, the lights of the garden twinkling around them softly. “Oh! Yes, the surprise went well, Andy had NO idea and she cried and was happy and they’re off somewhere on their own making up for lost time I’m sure,” he laughed at the words at the end of her sentence and he had to nod in agreement. "yeah that's probably true." he said as he dropped his hand from her cheek to her waist gently, his fingers resting on the fabric of her dress. "i can understand why they would" he wanted to catch up on lost time with susan. he'd been working too many hours since leaving the hospital to spend any of it with her and she had been busy with school, there was a lot of time to making up for. he glanced around the garden they were in and smiled when he heard a slow song start drifting from the castle and he looked back at her. "would you care to dance with me?"

Susan couldn't help but beam brightly as Casey explained how he had wanted to surprise her himself. She really had lucked out in the male department; she had thought for a time she was attracted to Raleigh Flint, but while he was good-looking,in the end any relationship they had would have imploded in on itself. Casey was different though. He had been Head Boy last year, and was training to be a Mediwizard; an EMT by Muggle standards. Her mother always liked hearing about people who took it upon themselves to help others as their career; it was why she was involved in so many charities. Susan would begin to be involved in some herself after graduation, but entering the Ministry in the Department of International Magical Cooperation was her dream right now. She hoped that her status of being Muggle royalty would not affect the departments decision to hire her.
Susan gave a small start of surprise when Casey asked her to dance; the last time that had happened she had had her toes stepped on a few times. She was pleased he had asked her though; it meant he was trying. "I would love to dance with you," she said, taking his hand in hers and leading him out a few steps. She let his hand fall to her waist as she placed her free one on his shoulder. "Do you need me to lead still?" she asked with a small smile.

@susanvictoria "I would love to dance with you," he chuckled as their hands linked and he nodded slightly. the last time they had danced it hadn't ended well. it had ended with them finishing their date in the hospital wing at hogwarts. though they hadn't danced since he wasn't ashamed to admit that he had practiced before tonight, his parents living room would have been laughing if it could talk. though the next time he did a dance practice he'd be back in his own apartment, free from the clutches of his over protective mother. "Do you need me to lead still?" his fingers shifted against her waist as they took a few steps and he nodded. "probably better, i'll follow you" he said as he dipped his forehead down to rest it against hers. "always" he said softly as he tightened his hand around the one holding hers and he smiled gently down at her as they moved to the music that was playing in the great hall. he didn't want this moment to end, it was perfect in his mind and the thought that they couldn't stay like this forever hurt slightly. he had to remind himself that they had time. time to work things out, time to discover each other and time to grow. but tonight and in this very moment it was just them.

Susan laughed lightly as Casey agreed to let her lead; it was probably for the best, she did agree with that. As they began to dance though she was pleasantly surprised. “You’ve been practicing,” she exclaimed happily. She was thrilled, thrilled to be dancing here with Casey, away from the Great Hall and was very touched that he had practiced the movements. “Luckily I don’t feel a stomach flu coming on any time soon,” she added, giggling as she thought of the last time they danced. That had ended with a kiss and Susan fainting, not from swooning but from illness. That wasn’t going tonight though, tonight would be perfect. Both of them were healthy, both of them were happy to be there. “Is it weird to be back here at all?” she asked him after blissful moments of silence as they danced. She spun around and allowed him to dip her with a smile.

@susanvictoria “You’ve been practicing,” he grinned and nodded slightly, happy that she had noticed he'd been working on his skills. if she loved dancing that much then he'd learn how to dance with her. he didn't think there wasn't anything he'd do to make her happy at this point. seeing her smile was the goal of every action he made when he was with her. he knew it was still early days but there was something about her, he dreaded the thought of when he'd have to leave her even for just a few days. “Luckily I don’t feel a stomach flu coming on any time soon,” he laughed softly and kept moving his feet with her as they danced in the garden. he'd never forget their first date. it had ended with susan in the hospital wing, sick as a dog and then just a few days later he himself had come down with it. though he wasn't sure whether his had been caused by her flu or the case of dragon pox he'd caught but either way, the owls the tao had sent each other during that time and the visits she had made to him had made it all worth it. "well even if you did, i'd gladly hold your hair and pat your back" he joked as he wrapped his arm more around her waist and kept dancing with her around the garden. “Is it weird to be back here at all?” he had to admit, it wasn't. he'd thought it would be. coming back to the school after only a few months away. he'd expected it to feel like he was still a student but he didn't. there was a difference about the place now. "not really. i can't explain it but .. it just feels like a place from my past" he said with a smile as he made to dip her gently, keeping his hold on her firm as he leaned down to kiss her mid dip.

Susan smiled as he dipped her and returned the kiss gladly. She was elated with how the night had gone so far; first the surprise for Andromeda had gone off without a hitch, somehow, and now Casey had pulled off his own surprise by meeting her here and also having learned how to dance properly. If he ended up being her date to the New Years Ambassador Ball, something she was hoping for, it would be good as she would be asked to start the dancing after her speech. The speech; Susan’s stomach swooped a little at the thought. She had about half of it written out, but it was full of cross-outs and rewrites; Susan didn’t want to come off as long-winded and babbling like her great-uncle’s speech a few years ago at a different event. Susan had almost nodded off in her mashed potatoes, he went on so long and in a droning, monotonous voice.
The song ended, and Susan applauded out of habit. Smiling over at Casey, she took his hand. “Let’s go and have some dinner,” she suggested, leading him into the ballroom and sitting at a small table designed for two. She picked up the menu and pondered over the choices; she wasn’t sure exactly how they were planning on getting the food to them though as there didn’t seem to be any waiters mingling around. “Do you know how to do this?” she whispered to him curiously. Looking around, she thought she spotted her brother Will but she couldn’t be sure. He was too far away to see clearly; but she was pretty sure Edmund was a distance away as well with his blonde girlfriend - of course Ed hadn’t declared he had a girlfriend, but Susan was a woman and had an ear for gossip. Still, she’d feign surprise when Ed actually got around to telling her about Addilyn.

@susanvictoria the song ended too soon in casey's opinion. but then it could have gone on forever and he'd have been okay with it. “Let’s go and have some dinner,” he rolled his head back and let out a groan with a smile as he rolled his head back upright so he could look at her. "do we have to? i would be happy just staying out here with you." he said but he walked after her as they made their way into the school. a lot of the people that were there were people he'd gone to school with, well his graduating class anyway. a lot of them had gone to work at the ministry and it seemed like they were all there too. he'd seen finn through one of the windows before and made a mental note to go hunt down his friend at one point so he could let him know he was still alive. sitting down at the table he stuck two fingers between his tie and his neck and he worked it from side to side slightly so it loosened. he wasn't a suit and tie person, he'd often gotten in trouble for having his tie not done up and wearing the wrong pants but to him it had made more sense. he'd conformed by the time he graduated but that had gone out of the window when he'd been able to wear his own clothes most of the time. “Do you know how to do this?” he looked at the menu and smiled slightly, reaching his hand over to rest it on her arm. "i haven't a clue, love" he said with a chuckle as he looked at the table for some sort of sign on how to get the food from wherever it was to their table.

“Yes, but I am hungry, and you would not want to be left alone with a hungry Susan,” Susan told him with a laugh. Will had always joked how she got ‘hangry’ whenever she hadn’t eaten on time; she would admit her mood would turn more than a little sour, and her temper flared up more easily if there was a rumbling in her stomach.
As Casey admitted he didn’t know how to get the food either, Susan raised an eyebrow at him. “You’re the pureblood here; didn't your parents attend this once?” she told him teasingly, pushing his arm lightly. She glanced around and saw a professor say the menu item out loud; within moments it appeared on her plate. “Excellent,” she said happily, her gaze returning to her menu. Her face scrunched up in thought; finally she made a decision. “Salmon,” she said clearly. Before a moment had passed, a pan seared salmon appeared in front of her on a bed of greens. The smell alone made Susan’s stomach rumble with hunger. “You just say the menu item you want and it appears!” she told Casey delightedly.

@susanvictoria “You’re the pureblood here; didn't your parents attend this once?” casey rolled his eyes and laughed slightly, turning his gaze to her and he made to stick his tongue out at her jokingly. "they had more interesting things to tell us. how to order food didn't really fall onto that list like ginny attending the ball with neville did." he said with a wink as he reached forward to grab one of the glasses in front of him and he took a sip. “Excellent, Salmon,” he watched the food appear on his plate and he grinned. almost like the great hall, though he was pretty sure the food that appeared on their plates at dinner had been more of an elaborate spell. “You just say the menu item you want and it appears!” he thought about what he wanted and settled on something after a few seconds. "beef." he said toward the plate and low and behold it appeared on his plate a few seconds later, a nice piece of beef that was on a bed of mashed potato with a side of beans. it didn't look too bad and it smelled great so he didn't waste any time before he started to eat it.

Susan enjoyed the pleasant silence that was due to eating; during the dinner parties her mother would throw, she was always expected to make small talk with whoever was sitting beside her, even if they had absolutely nothing interesting to say. Susan couldn’t begin to think of the random subjects she’d have to pull out of nowhere; literature, films, only to hear a droning talk about agriculture or fishing. Sometimes she’d sat next to someone who wanted to have a political conversation with her, but her mother frowned upon the topic of politics at dinners.
After they finished their meals, Susan stood up, offering her hand to Casey. “Let’s go back outside, it’s rather hot in here,” she told him. They walked back outside towards the stalls Susan and Gaius had come up with, and Susan was surprised to see a familiar face. “Ooh! My friend Lysander is back from the hospital - I must go say hello. You will excuse me for a moment won’t you?” she told him. She kissed him on the cheek and headed down to say hello to her friend.
