Lily had ran from Adrian and that letter straight into Jamie and her tin of cookies. The day after that the snow outside was so bad that Lily just holed up in the Common Room, staring blankly at the fire. That's when Irina found her. She didn't see Adrian that whole day, either.
Today, two days since that letter came, Lily was determined to find Adrian. She wasn't going to let their entire December, the month of Christmas, be ruined by this! They still had hope, they still didn't know for sure that this was going to happen. That he was going to leave her.
He was in classes, of course, but she didn't talk to him there. Finally, their last class of the day ended and she hurried out the door after him. Upon reaching him, she reached out and grabbed the sleeve of his robe to stop him. "Hey, Adrian," she said, her voice demanding.

Adrian had gone from feeling overwhelmingly helpless to numb. He honestly didn't know what to think anymore. Or what to feel. Or why he was feeling it. And his head hurt from thinking too much. In a way it was a relief because it was a welcome distraction from the thoughts. He hasn't been avoiding Lily, not exactly, but he hadn't been trying to see her either. He wanted to make some sense of things before he faced her, because he didn't want to appear so helpless and confused.
Two days of not really seeing his best friend was hard. Okay he saw her in classes, but that didn't really count. They'd sat apart and avoided eye contact.
Adrian was just leaving their final class for the day when he felt someone grab the sleeve of his robe, knowing immediately who it was before she even spoke. He'd always know when Lily was near. He froze in the doorway, not turning to face her yet. "Hey." he managed to respond as his heart started to beat a little faster.

He didn't turn around, but at least he spoke. The sound of his voice was... comforting and warm, but also painful. Like someone lit a fire inside her and it was burning through her insides. She stepped up beside him, still holding his sleeve for a moment but she lowered her hand to hold the robes closer to his wrist. She pulled him out of the doorway before turning to stand directly in front of him.
She opened her mouth, but she wasn't sure what to say. How could she possibly not know what to say to her best friend in the entire world!? What was the universe coming to!? She took in a deep breath, closing her mouth for a moment and simply looking up at his face in silence.
People passed by and a few moments sped away from them. Finally, she spoke again. "Hi," she said, trying for a small smile.

Adrian swallowed as he felt Lily moving around him and pulled him out of the doorway. His feet seemed to have a mind of their own, as they often did when Lily was near. He just couldn't resist following her. Once clear of the doorway, she stepped in front of him and he was suddenly forced to look at her. As much as he wanted to look away he didn't. It was almost like a trance, Adrian incapable of tearing his eyes away as he took her in. He felt both whole and broken with her so near, which only confused the boy.
Neither of them said anything for several moments, giving Adrian time to just soak in everything that was Lily. The red hair, those eyes, the way her lips curved when she smiled. He knew Lily better then himself. She was the first to break the silence, and it made him smile just a little as she stuffed his hands in his pockets. "You already said that."

He smiled as she spoke, and that made her smile to. The first real smile in what felt like ages. He reminded her that she already said hi and she glared at him, "so what?" she said, her tone teasing, miraculously. "I can't say hi to my best friend numerous times? Hi," she said with a smirk, "hello. Bonjour. Hallo. Yo. Wassup. Good morning. Good afternoon," she giggled. She was surprised at how her insides were warming up and freezing at the same time.
She didn't move her hand yet from the sleeve of his robe, but she did loosen her grip a little. "Hi," she said one last time, softer again.

Adrian was surprised by the snarky, so Lily like, response, followed by a plethora of greetings. It was so normal, so familiar, her attitude and spunk. It shouldn't be surprising to him, and yet, part of him had been so numb that it'd shocked him enough to finally thaw the icy numbness. Rolling his eyes, he found that small smile of his growing just a bit. "Can you only say greetings right now?" be responded with his own, usual sarcasm. He sounded almost normal, for the first time in days. "How... have you been?" he finally forced himself to ask.

Lily saw that smile grow and hers did too, she coudln't help it. She wanted to wrap her arms around his waist and hug him tightly, but she didn't. She rolled his eyes and she found a giggle coming out of her at his saracastic comment about greetings, but then he asked how she had been and her smile lessened. "Honestly?" she paused, finally taking her hand away from his sleeve, "bad." She said it quickly, not really wanting to admit it out loud. At least not to him. "I found my book, though. Fantastic beasts.... it was in the fort," she muttered.

Adrian's smile disappeared at that one word. Honestly. It meant bad news. And then, she released the sleeve of his robes and he suddenly felt hollow, as if his very soul had just been sucked out by the act. He reached out immediately, to catch her wrist before she'd pulled away to far for him to reach. It'd been such an instinctual act, he didn't even register the motion until it was already done. At which point he should have let go, but decided against it if only so he didn't look indecisive. "Me too." he answered. Bad. That definitely summed up what was going on. At the mention of her book he blinked. "I didn't know you'd lost it." he probably would have noticed if he'd been out there since the letter... but he hadn't managed to bring himself to.
Faking a cough, to cover up the emotion the thought stirred, he released her wrist and ran his fingers through his curly hair. "I... ah... I haven't heard anything from my mother yet. I figured if she liked the job she'd write sooner.... but I don't know." he muttered, his voice trailing off at the end.

She gasped as his hand found her wrist and her eyes flickered to that touch. "Me too," he said, and she let out a breath she had been holding in. She nodded as he said that he didn't know she lost her book. She didn't say anything yet, and before she could protest he was coughing and taking his hand away from her.
She felt her eyes stinging and absent mindedly took that same wrist he had been holding in her other hand, stroking her thumb where his fingers had been. He mentioned his mother and her breath caught again, and she felt a slight surge of hope, but she realized that was pointless. "That's... okay," she said softly, taking her eyes from his to look down the hall, "maybe she's just having too much fun to write."

Adrian felt.... a little hollow after releasing Lily's wrist. As if there was a sudden void, swallowing everything else until he finally found what would fill that void. But he already knew what that something was. It was Lily. It'd always be Lily. How he managed to control himself though was shocking, even to him. Fighting the urge to reach back out and take her wrist once more. Hell, he wanted to just pull her into his arms and tell her everything would be find and that he wasn't going anywhere. That his mother wouldn't take this job, and they'd get to stay the same. But he couldn't promise that. Because he knew that if his mother took the job, he'd go with her. She didn't have anyone else, and he couldn't just tell her that he wanted to keep going to Hogwarts while she navigated America alone. He'd go too. He'd put on a smile and pretend to like whatever school he transferred to, but secretly he'd miss Lily every single day.
But that was what best friends always thought... right?
"Maybe." He muttered as he said his mother might just be having too much fun to write. "I, uh... I should probably go. I'm meeting up with Rubeus. I'll... see you later, okay?" Was he running way? Yes, most definitely. Turning and walking as quickly as he could with out running, Adrian left...

No, no, no, no, no. She could feel him slipping away from her. She felt that rock build up in her throat again and she wanted to speak, but she couldn't. He muttered that he should go, about meeting up with Rubeus. She wanted to protest, but she forgot how. She turned away and, finally, she shook her head. "Wait..." she muttered, almost a whisper, but he was long out of ear shot.
---
They saw each other at dinner, even sat near each other, but didn't say much. Then it was bed time, then breakfast, then classes again, then another night of not talking. Finally, the day after that one, so another two days, they were forced to speak again.
Lily had been crying, a lot, to her mother. She was now walking down the hall, in between classes, head down, books in hand, and she slammed into someone. Normally she was incredibly intuitive about this stuff. Her books fell from her hands, "sorry," she choked, bending down to fetch the books and not looking up to see who it was.

Adrian had finally received a letter from his mother.
Immediately after reading the brief update, he ran. Not away though. To try and find Lily. He was almost frantic, desperate to find the red head. He'd just rounded a corner when Lily literally ran right into him. Literally. The books in her arm dropped, as did he letter in his hand, but he didn't care. "Lily." He breathed, almost as if her name was the medicine he needed. As if her mere presence made everything better. He completely ignored the books and letter on the ground and wrapped his arms around her, yanking her into a hug whether she wanted it or not.
For the first time in days he finally felt.... normal.

She heard her name and looked up. Adrian. Her eyes were puffy and red from crying. She barely had time to process that it was him, though, before he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close to him. She felt a sob catch in her throat, again, and without even hesitating she lifted her arms to wrap around his neck, pulling herself as tightly to him as she possibly could. She found something... old and unfamiliar in her throat. A laugh. She let it out and held him tighter, if that was even possible. "Adrian," she breathed.

Adrian had grabbed Lily so fast that he hadn't even seen the red and puffy eyes. Hadn't realized that she'd been crying. Because as he stood there, holding her tightly, it was almost like the last few days hadn't happened. Because this was how things were supposed to be with them. He didn't even care if they were in the middle of the corridor. That Lily had another class to get to. Hearing her say his name was enough to heal the hole deep inside him. Her tightened his hold on her as she returned the hug, bringing his head down just a bit so his lips were near her ear. "She's not taking the job." he whispered, finally explaining his behavior. She'd also said that she was looking at a few other prospects, but the job he'd written to her about hadn't been what she wanted in the end. He doubted she'd find something else while she was there. Which meant... he didn't have to leave.

His arms around her was like a warm blanket. He moved his head toward her ear and she leaned toward the sound of his whisper. "She's not taking the job," he said. She caught her breath, suddenly feeling as though the entire weight of the world was rising out of her and flying away on the wind. After a moment she giggled, reaching one of her hands up into his hand turning her face toward his. Their noses were touching. "So you'll stay with me?" she asked, trying to make it sound like a plea but it really sounded like a demand. Typical Lily.
