His absolute biggest fear is letting what happened to him during his years MiA effect his relationships here and now or worse yet to become a prisoner again. Those were years he would never wish on even his worst enemy and he doesn't want them happening again in any form.
overall personality:
Ian is the epitome of a student who was in the Gryffindor house during Hogwarts. Brave, daring and perhaps a tad reckless at times. But one thing you could also say about him is that he has a good heart to him. Loyal to a T--he won't betray those he trusts no matter what. He can't stand those who say one thing and go around your back and do something else. He isn't like that. He is one who always tells it how it is though he isn't as tactless as that may make it sound.
His moral compass is strong. He knows what is right and what is wrong and he will stubbornly stick to his values no matter what you may think of him. He isn't one to care too much about what you think of his choices. He feels that it is his duty and honor to protect those who are weaker then he is. He is all about making a difference. Be it muggles, students, people under attack or even other wizards and witches--he won't tolerate someone bullying or hurting someone else just because they can. Its definitely a way to get on his bad side.
Not that he doesn't have weaknesses himself...he isn't perfect after all. He takes things he does seriously--almost too serious. And he can be especially hard on himself when he makes a mistake. Even things that aren't his fault--he thinks he could have done something to prevent it. It can make him agitated at times and perhaps a bit cranky. And since coming back from tour he's even more on edge and jumpy--more wary and less likely to trust then he once was...all products of years he'd rather not talk about.

history:
Being a military kid could be seen as tough by some. Always moving and never really having the opportunity to settle down for too long and make lasting friends, but for Ian -- it was how life was. He and his two sisters were children of a soldier and so it just came with the job they guessed. Ian never complained about it--as a matter of fact he looked up to his dad highly. He admired what his dad was doing and the choices he made for the safety of others. That selfless attitude still encourages him--always has and still does even to this day.
It was when he was eleven that something special happened. Something that set him apart from his sisters. It was when he got a note from Hogwarts telling him that he had been accepted into the school. It put some strain on his relationship with his elder sister who thought she should have been accepted too, but they eventually got over their argument and Ian was off to Hogwarts. It was no surprise that he was put into Gryffindor house--the house's bravery exemplifying what Ian wanted to become as he got older.
Things changed again during a potions class with the 2nd year Hufflepuffs. It was then that he had met River and they just connected. In a way Ian couldn't explain. He was the seeker for the Quidditch team while in school and there was just something he saw in the girl who seemed to stick to herself more often then not. They got closer and closer during his last five years at the school. But he knew that when he graduated things would change--he knew that he was going to be joining the army soon after he graduated. It was what his dad did, his mom supported and it wasn't forced--he wanted this. He wanted this more then anything else. But he didn't want to loose touch with River. And so when he graduated at the end of her sixth year--they wrote letters. Lots of lots of letters and he visited in Hogsmeade when he could. It was precious time to him. Time he wouldn't have changed for anything.
When River graduated is when he enlisted and left--left as part of a peacekeeping force sent to the Korean countries as tension rose between North and South. It was a sad time yet happy all at the same time. They continued to write letters while he was gone though as the years stretched on--he told River that she should move on. That she deserved someone who wasn't gone like this...he isn't sure if she listened but who knows? He was gone for four years before coming home for a week. One short, short week that went by entirely way too fast for Ian. He spent it with River at her flat in London. She still loved him--wanted to be with him. It was clear she had no intention of moving on...but that was okay. A part of him was glad she didn't want to. But before he knew it-the week was over and he was back in the Korean area keeping the peace.
But things took a turn for the worse shortly after he returned when the group was attacked by Northern Korean soldiers. They had no intentions of peace and weren't happy with them trying to make peace. They had their ways and they were going to stick with it. And that was that. Several were killed, several escaped but most including Ian were captured. They would spend the next three years in a labor camp where conditions were bad--bad enough to where Ian watched as several of his friends died from the let's just say less then stellar area they were staying in. Ian doesn't know that they had sent a note to his family and friends saying that he was presumed dead. However other family members were not so easily swayed and demanded investigation. It was then they found out the true situation.
Eventually the government was able to negotiate with the Korean forces and they released Ian and the rest of the soldiers who were alive anyways...but he had changed. He wasn't who he once was. Those three years haunt him terribly and there are some nights were he can't sleep because of it. Course the undiagnosed PTSD doesn't help but Ian is trying to overcome it by himself. Its not something he wishes to talk about and he definitely has no mood for the whole therapist bit and sides--he has his dog duke to help out and that's better then any doc at this point---so he thinks.
And so now here he is--a bartender at the Hog's head -- a solider trying to get used to being free again. Even though its been a little over a year--its not easy. Its not easy getting over that. He wishes he could just go to River --tell her what happened and ask for her help, but he is almost scared to. He's changed--he knows he has and he isn't sure if she would view him the same anymore. And so on he goes trying to overcome so much by himself....
