She was surprised, and extremely pleased that he didn't flinch at her touch. In fact, he seemed to relax more in that moment. When she dropped her hand, she just wanted to reach over and grab his hand with it immediately after, but she decided that could wait just a moment. At least until he gave his response. His response that he trusted her, and would try his best. "Your best is good enough, Ian.... always has been," she spoke, almost casually, as if this was something everybody knew. As if it was something obvious. But that's just the thing, it was obvious to her. She clearly had loved him since the moment they started dating at Hogwarts. Heck, she had loved him even before that even if it was only a juvenile love at the time. "But hey," she said, finally finding the courage to reach a hand across and gently rest it on his knee, "I''m not saying I want all the details, I don't need them if you don't need to share. I'm just saying that I can be there for you when you need me to be. You don't even have to say anything. We don't even have to touch. Ian," she leaned in closer to him, and a smile actually started to slip onto her lips, "I'm just saying I'm here for you. I am."
She glanced back at the dog for a moment, laughing a little at his patient yet dumbfounded face, "I bet this guy helps a lot, huh?" she reached over with her free hand and ruffled the dogs ears once more. "Which reminds me..." she glanced over his shoulder in search of her black cat, "I wonder what Kimmy thinks about all this dog in the house business," she chuckled a little but gave up looking. She was probably hiding out in the bedroom.
The tension in the air had lifted significantly, mostly because River was refusing to let it stick. She sighed, trying to release some of the nervous energy. "Are you hungry? I can make you something, we can-" she paused as her eyes fell upon his face once again. She calmed for a moment as she made eye contact with him. Then she founds herself glancing at his lips for a moment. Wow. She hadn't even thought about kissing him this entire time. Nope, that wasn't something she would start. That ball was in his court, bar none.
