The Yule Ball was beginning to wind down, which was fine by Royal. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy the dancing and the food (and the alcohol), but he wasn't as young as he used to be. Royal laughed to himself at the thought - twenty two, and he already felt old. There was someone at the Ball that he still had yet to see or dance with, though, and Royal wanted to be sure to get to her before the band stopped playing. Finding Addie in the crowd was proving harder than Royal originally thought, but since he was a fair bit taller than most of the students, at least he had that going for him. After searching for another minute or two, Royal spotted his sister, and made his way through the crowd so he could tap her on the shoulder, smiling broadly.

Adeline was doing well at the Yule Ball; she had been worried that the throngs of people would set off an anixiety attack, but she had been fortunate enough to have had enough space to allow her to breathe. With the market stalls down in the courtyard, Adeline found herself quite content to engorge herself on different types of food. She hadn't come with a date, but she'd worn a gorgeous sleeveless silvery sparkling dress with strappy silver heels. She felt fabulously alive; why shouldn't she treat herself to some delicious food.
Soon though the night was wearing down, but Adeline had yet to dance with anyone yet. She'd danced around with Abby a bit but that was it. Suddenly, there was a tap at her shoulder and Addie spun around to find her elder brother in front of her. "Roy!" she exclaimed, her smile wide as she went in to kiss him on the cheek. "How has your night been?" she asked.

Royal smiled wider when Addie saw him and automatically smiled back at him. Seeing his sisters happy was one of his favorite things, especially so with Adeline, who had been through more than her fair share of trials lately. “It’s been wonderful.” Royal responded when his sister asked him how his night was. “I think Jonah’s going to tell Jacob that we’re together, so that’s sure to be interesting.” Royal wasn’t sure what was going to come of that, but he wasn’t going to let his thoughts rest on that when there were other things to be done. “I would have an even more wonderful night if you agreed to dance with me, though.” Royal said, batting his eyelashes. He had learned that trick from Jonah, an it seemed to be working out pretty well for him so far – hopefully Adeline wasn’t immune to his charms. Royal extended his hand for his sister to take, hoping that she would dance with him even if she hadn’t been dancing before that point.

Adeline's jaw droped slightly when Royal told her Jonah was planning on telling his own brother about their relationship; Royal had been forthcoming about Jonah from pretty much the beginning with his sisters, but she knew their closeness was not the norm for all families. She had no idea what Jonah and Jacob's fraternal relationship was like; she did know though that the more open one was with your family, the happier you'd be in the long run. "Will you be with him do you think, or will he do it himself?" she asked curiously. She knew Royal would want to be there for Jonah, but sometimes it was easier for them to get the news out one on one.
Adeline giggled as Royal asked her to dance, batting his eyelashes at her like a young schoolboy. "Roy you know my answer. The honor is all mine," she said, curtseying quickly before taking her brothers' proffered arm to the dance floor. "You are my first dance of the night I'll have you know," she told him, placing a hand on his shoulder as they began to waltz. "You do seem happy though, deliriously so. And that makes me happy," she added, smiling at him.

Addie wanted to know whether or not Royal would be with Jonah when he told Jacob about their relationship. Being with Jonah when he broke the news had never really crossed his mind, but Royal tried not to let that show when he answered his sister. “Probably not.” Royal said. “I think it’ll be easier for Jake if I’m not there. You know, reduce the shock a little.” Royal had been careful not to let on to his relationship with Jonah when Jacob was around, and Jonah had been just as careful; even if he was supportive of it, it was bound to be a little bit of a shock.
His sister agreed to dance with him, and Royal grinned at her. He had hoped for an answer, but with Addie being who she was – that was, a recovering addict – Royal didn’t want to assume anything. “First and last, I’d hope.” Royal answered with an arched eyebrow. “Unless there’s a suitor you want to tell me about?” He asked with a face that was simultaneously stern and teasing. “I am happy.” Royal said with a nod. “I’m planning to propose to Jonah.” Royal said, hoping that the casual delivery would make the bomb a little less shocking.

Adeline nodded in agreement when Royal said it'd be easier if it was just Jonah and Jacob. "Is it...weird at all? You dating your close friends brother?" she mused as they whirled around the dance floor. She'd been rather surprised when Royal had told her and Abby about Jonah, but she'd gotten used to the idea quickly. She was happy for him, truly she was. She just hoped that Royal would always be there for her if she needed him.
Adeline laughed when Royal asked after any suitors. "Well I've had coffee or tea with one or two fellows recently but...right now I want to focus on me. Being the best me I can possibly be. I don't want to be in a relationship worrying about relapsing every other day, it's not fair to them," she said, her voice quiet so nobody would overhear them. Not that she believed people would overhear or be remotely interested in her conversation, but people knew who she was so she could never be sure. Then Royal dropped the bomb, and Addie was sure her jaw hit the floor. "Propose?" she mouthed, her eyes wide. "Oh Roy..." she breathed, her eyes sparkling with tears. She wiped at them hastily and laughed. "Don't worry I promise these are happy tears," she told him quickly, then brought him in for a bone crushing hug. "I'm so proud of you Roy, dad would be too I know it," she whispered.

Royal chewed on his lip a bit as Addie asked him if it was weird to date Jacob’s brother. “It was, kind of, at the beginning, but of all my friends I’d say I’m the least close with Jacob, so that helps a little.” If he was dating one of Victoire’s siblings, now that would be weird. But Royal was really only close to Jake because they happened to be friends with the same people, so it wasn’t as strange as it could be.
“That’s probably a smart idea.” Royal agreed when Addie said that she needed to focus on herself before pusruing any sort of romantic interest. “Still, did any of them strike you as someone you could, you know, be with?” Having a coffee with someone was one thing, but thinking about becoming romantically involved with them was different. “You don’t have to say if you don’t want.” Royal added. It couldn’t be easy discussing your romantic pursuits with your older brother, after all. Tears sprung to Addie’s eyes when he said he might propose to Jonah, and Royal was reaching up to wipe them away when Addie hugged him. “I think about Dad a lot when I’m with Jo.” Royal admitted over Addie’s shoulder. “I wonder what he would think. If he would be happy for me.” That was what was causing Royal to hesitate, really. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to get married without his father’s blessing, and without his dad there to see it.

Adeline nodded at Royal’s answer, not even realizing she was mirroring his habit of chewing the lower lip. She did though and smiled at him. “What about Vic; have you told her about Jo yet?” she asked curiously. She understood why Jonah would and should be the one to tell Jake about his relationship with Royal, but Victoire should hear it from Royals’ lips. “And are you going to formally introduce us sometime? I’d love to meet the man stealing my brothers’ heart and soul away,” she added teasingly. She wasn’t being completely serious with the last part; she knew Royal would always be there for her if she needed him. Still, with an engagement would come moving out and into his own place with Jonah, so already that was less time Adeline would see him.
Adeline was glad that Royal agreed with her. “Thanks Roy; I am trying, I promise. But...what if I think I’m better, and then I meet someone who just drags me back down?” she asked, rather nervously. She didn’t think any of the fellows she had been conversing with would actually do that, but having a conversation was vastly different than having a relationship. “None are really in front of the other right now. They’re all so different that it’s nice to have the varying conversations. I don’t talk about the same thing with anyone,” she admitted, then nudged her brother. “Don’t worry, I’ll send the lucky fellow to you for your seal of approval when the time comes,” she teased.

Royal winced a little when Adeline asked him about Victoire. That was a long story. “Yes. But not exactly on purpose.” Royal admitted, hoping that justified his wince, at least a little bit. Addie understood how Victoire could be. “It took her a little bit to come around, but that was mostly because I think she was upset I didn’t want to tell her in the first place.” Royal exhaled slightly. That was dancing around the fact that he and Victoire had had an argument, albeit a brief one, on the subject. “Formal introductions can be arranged, but it would probably have to be after the New Year.” He said. Between now and the New Year, Royal was planning to go into work a few times to keep the Minister’s Office running smoothly even over the holidays. Victoire was there right now, and she deserved to have at least a little time off for the holidays.
“That is something you need to consider.” He agreed when Adeline expressed her reluctance to put herself in a relationship with someone who might push her back into the arms of her addiction. “But I think you’ll know if that happens.” Royal said with a shrug. “And if you don’t, I’ll definitely tell you. And Abby might, too.” He wasn’t sure how often his sisters talked, but he knew that sometimes he and Abby went days, or even weeks, without talking. Which was mostly his fault, but that was beside the point. “You don’t need my approval.” Royal reminded Addie. “But I will give him a stern talking to.” Since his father wasn’t there to threaten any of Addie’s potential beaus, it was Royal’s job instead.

Adeline could see the change in Royal’s demeanor; she decided not to press about Victoire finding out about Jonah as it had seemingly been awkward. Royal confirmed this with his next statement, and Addie decided to let it drop. She twirled out away from her brother, then came back in with a small smile. “After the New Year is fine; how about dinner somewhere in London? Could try a new restaurant, you know how I love sushi,” she suggested brightly. Though Adeline was a pureblooded wizard, she still loved frequenting Muggle restaurants, especially those with cuisines from far away places. The UK was lucky enough to not have as harsh Muggle relations laws as America; Addie found herself intrigued by Muggles and their customs. It didn’t hurt that she was an Obliviator; if any wizards decided to cause trouble, she had authorization to wipe all their memories.
Adeline giggled as Royal promised that he would tell her if he felt her choice in partner was leading her back down a dark path. She still distinctly remembered the intervention that Abby and he had held for Addie at the height of her addiction. She was better now, really she was, but there had been a few times where she’d almost broken down and given into her withdrawal symptoms. Luckily, she had yet to be successful. “A stern talking to is fine, just so long as you don’t scare him off,” Addie agreed with a smile. The song ended and she turned to her brother. “Another dance, or do you need a break?” she asked him, her tone teasing.

Adeline agreed to formally meet Jonah after the New Year, suggesting that they eat dinner someplace in London. Sushi. Royal wrinkled his nose a little at the idea of eating raw fish. It sounded strange to him. “I’ll talk to Jonah and see what he wants to do, and then get back to you?” Royal suggested. Maybe he could get Jo to say that he didn’t like sushi and then he would be spared of having to disappoint his sister with his inability to eat her cuisine of choice.
“I don’t try to scare people off on purpose.” Royal informed Addie. “But the scars and the tattoos can seem intimidating. And the eyes.” People got unsettled when they looked at Royal’s two-toned eyes sometimes, which he didn’t understand, but whatever. “And our ideas of what constitutes an acceptable amount of sternness might be different, too…” Royal told Addie. Having to play both brother and father meant he had to be stricter than usual in his appraisals of his sisters’ significant others. Addie asked him if he needed a break, and Royal rolled his eyes. “I might be older than you, but I’m not old enough that I need a break in between every dance.” Royal said, hitting Addie’s shoulder playfully. He knew she was only asking because he had been dancing all night and this was her first (and she was teasing him), but still! Royal was definitely not in need of a break yet. “If you need a break, though, I’ll gladly sit.” He said teasingly.

Adeline saw his nose wrinkle and smacked her brothers’ arm playfully. “Royal you know full well that there are plenty of other food at sushi restaurants. Like sesame chicken, crab rangoon, pork fried rice,” she listed off the first things that came to mind. She imagined there were some sushi restaurants that only served sushi of course, but she felt that the ones that catered to multiple palettes lasted far longer in the business. “But okay, let me know what works best and I’ll scout the best location for us,” she relented, smiling happily.
Adeline was pleased that Royal declared he didn’t need a break and shook her head at his teasing request. “Nah, let’s keep going,” she exclaimed, twirling around in her silvery dress. If this had been this time last year, who knows; perhaps they’d be celebrating Abigail as Champion as the Triwizard Tournament. It wasn’t out of the realm of possibilities; any one of those second generation Marauders could have claimed the Champion position. Part of her was glad they had graduated the year before though; her nerves were already shot from the events of last year and they’d be gone if she had to worry about her sister too. “People always mistake me for Abby; you’d think we’re identical or something,” she added teasingly. Sure, her and Abby were identical twins, but their personalities were so different one would think telling them apart would be easier!

Adeline had to go full-on Ravenclaw on him, listing the other foods besides sushi that could be found at a sushi restaurant. “But I’ll still have to watch you eat it.” He pointed out. He hated the idea of eating raw fish himself, but watching someone else eat it voluntarily, and enjoy it, seemed just as disgusting. And if Jonah ate sushi, and then Royal kissed him, it would be pretty much the same thing! Ick. “This is what I get for being related to a foodie.” Maybe Adeline wasn’t a connoisseur of foods, but she ate enough of a variety that Royal, at least, considered her a foodie. But she would find a place for them to eat, and that was all that really mattered.
Upon the agreement that neither of them were tired, Adeline began to dance again, and Royal followed suit easily. Royal wasn’t sure there the comment about being confused with Abigail came from, so he raised his eyebrows at his sister. “Are you implying that one of your gentlemen friends thought you were her?” He asked. That would definitely be an awkward situation. Royal was thankful, once again, that he had an older brother’s intuition and the ability to tell his sisters apart that came with it. “As far as I’m concerned, you’re not identical.” Royal added. Anyone who spent ten minutes with both of the twins could tell that much.

Adeline laughed. “You’ve seen us eat far worse Roy; you definitely watched us be fed mashed peas and other nasty looking baby food when Abby and I were infants,” she pointed out. She’d seen the sort of jars of food fed to infants; some of them looked like what came out the back end into the diapers. She didn’t comprehend how that could be viewed as edible for anyone, even a baby. “I can cover my mouth while I eat if it bothers you so much,” she offered as a compromise, then straightened a little to show her pride in Royal calling her a foodie. “You’re just lucky I love to eat,” she said, then laughed.
“You’ve known us since you were born Roy; if you couldn’t tell us apart by now, we’d have far bigger problems,” Adeline pointed out. It wasn’t as if people had trouble telling the twins apart once they’d had one conversation with them. Adeline liked to talk about books and mythology and Abby...well sometimes Abby preferred the whole not talking thing, but she loved to go on about her adventures. Really, night and day. “Usually someone has to wait until we start talking to realize which twin is which. I know it shouldn’t bother me, but when someone I work with in the Obliviator office asks what I’m doing in my own office it’s a little disheartening,” she admitted, letting her brother dip her before continuing around the dance floor.

Addie said that he had seen his sisters eat far worse, and Royal wrinkled his nose. “When I was that young I didn’t realize how disgusting it was. I probably thought it was cool that Mom and Dad would force feed you green stuff, to be honest.” He said with a smirk. Young boys were always at least somewhat attracted to the ick factor, it seemed, and Royal had been no different. At least, he assumed not – his memories of Abby and Addie as babies were foggy, at best. Royal chuckled when Addie offered to cover her mouth when she was eating the sushi, since it bothered him so much. “Good idea.” He said teasingly. “I feel like luck is all a matter of perspective.” Royal added when Addie said he was lucky she liked to eat. Sometimes it was great, but other times…not so much.
“Or maybe I just have a natural knack for telling twins apart!” Royal protested. He couldn’t think of any other twins that were identical that he could tell apart easily, unless you counted the Scamander boys – and Royal didn’t, because they kept their hair in different styles. “It’s okay to be bothered by that.” Royal reassured Addie. “We all want a place where we can belong, after all.” And asking why you were someplace where you thought you belonged was never a good feeling.
