01 june, 2005 School had finally let out for summer, and today was the first day of summer vacation. Emmy had been looking froward this day since the first day in May, when her aunt and uncle promised that they'd take her and Rory berry picking when school was out. They were going to be driving an entire two hours to the nearest farm that would let the public pick their own berries, but Emmy didn't care if it took two hours or twenty to get there - Rory was going to be in the backseat with her, which meant that she definitely wasn't going to get bored. After helping her aunt and uncle pack their picnic lunch for when they arrived on the farm, Emmy had been charged with the task of running over to Rory's house to tell him that they were ready to go. Emmy had taken the straw hat her aunt had insisted on wearing off of her head and tied it around her neck instead, and it flopped around as she ran, barefoot, to Rory's house, smiling broadly as she knocked on the door.

Rory rushed through his chores this morning, determined to be ready to pick berries with Emmy whenever she was ready. She'd been talking about this for ages and he was just excited to spend the day with her. Any time spent with his best friend was a bonus, and today was going to be better than most because food was involved and it was supposed to be an all-day type of outing. He finally finished his chores and told his father, who told him to go play a game until Emmy came to pick him up. He trudged up the stairs, wondering how long it would be, when he heard a knock on the door. Rory called out, telling his father it was Emmy before he opened the door. "Enjoy yourself," his father called and Rory opened the door, excited that it was finally started. "Hey Emmy!" He said cheerfully as he closed the door behind himself.

01 june, 2005 When Rory opened the door to his house, Emmy practically launched herself at him, giggling excitedly as she wrapped her arms around him in a brief, tight hug before pulling away. “Rory Rory Rory!” She laughed. “I am so ready to go! Let’s go!” She said, not really returning his greeting or doing anything someone politer would have done, like asking Rory how he had been. They had the entire car ride to talk, after all, and the sooner the left the sooner they could get there and pick berries. “I’ll race you!” Emmy added, just in case that would inspire her best friend to move a little faster. Without turning to see whether or not Rory was following her, Emmy took off in the direction she had came, running at a full-on sprint to get back to her house as soon as possible. Rory would know how to get there on his own if she really outran him that badly.

Rory laughed when Emmy threw her arms around him and gave him a giant hug. Of course, he hugged her back. It was common for the two of them to greet one another with hugs. Then she pulled away and took off without any warning, other than telling him that she wanted to race. Rory grinned and took off, trying to beat her. He never had before, so he was pretty sure that he wouldn't be able to now, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to try. He raced to her house, only stopping once he could touch it. He leaned on the wall heavily, breathing hard in and out. "You're really fast," he teased with a smile, confident that she would take it as a compliment. He liked complimenting her.

01 june, 2005 Emmy reached her house before Rory, which shouldn’t have surprised anyone involved, since she made the run at least once a day. Emmy grinned at Rory when he said that she was really fast. “I run a lot.” Emmy said with a laugh. She wasn’t good at doing things slowly. Now that both of the kids were there, Emmy’s aunt and uncle ushered them into the backseat of the car. The first thing Emmy did was roll down her window and gesture for Rory to do the same. “We’re going on an adventure, Rory!” She cheered as the car rolled down the driveway and pulled onto the street.

Rory rolled his eyes when Emmy told him that she runs often. "I know that," he told her. Of course he did. They were best friends and Emilia was one of the most active people he knew. He jumped easily into the backseat of the car and unrolled the windows when Emmy told him to. He laughed at her obvious excitement as the car started moving. "Aren't we always on adventures?" he asked after a while. At least, to him it always felt like an adventure. Maybe it didn't to her.

01 june, 2005 Rory rolled down his window when commanded to, and Emmy took a moment to bask in the feeling of the wind and the sunshine on her face. It smelled like summer on the air, and she was already excited beyond the belief. Hopefully it would last through the entirety of the car ride and she wouldn’t get bored. “Well, yes.” Emmy said when Rory asked if they were always on adventures. “But that doesn’t make it any less exciting when we get to start a new one!” If adventuring ever got boring, then there wouldn’t be so many films about it, in Emmy’s opinion. “Let’s play I Spy.” She said, already fidgeting despite only having been sitting for two minutes or so.

Rory laughed, "Well I guess you're right about that." Quite honestly, he wouldn't trade his adventures with Emmy for anything. He absolutely loved doing exciting things and spending time with her. They always had a lot of fun with one another. He shrugged at her suggestion, "Sure. You go ahead and start," he told her after a second. He knew she would get bored if she didn't guess right on one of her first tries, so maybe her going first would help.

01 june, 2005 Emmy grinned at Rory. He didn’t always seem as enthusiastic about their adventures as she was, but he still came along anyways. That was what best friends were for anyways, right? Rory said that she could start the game of I Spy, and Emmy bit her lip, glancing out the window. They were moving too quickly for her to pick something outside of the car for their game, so she let her eyes roam around the inside of the car. She spotted a yellow crayon in Rory’s cup holder from the last time she and her family had gone to a restaurant, but let her eyes wonder a couple of seconds before announcing, “I Spy something yellow.”

She said yellow and Rory started looking outside the car, wanting to find something quickly, but what he realized was that there were not very many yellow things outside, and the few things there were flashed by too quickly to really see them well. Which meant ... he'd better look inside. He saw a few yellow items. A coloring book jammed into one of the back pockets on the chairs, a yellow candy on the floor (which definitely wasn't good anymore) and a yellow crayon. "Coloring book?" he asked first, figuring that would be the most logical one. Then again, since when had Emmy ever been logical?

01 june, 2005 In hindsight, Emmy probably should have chosen a different color for I Spy. There just weren’t enough yellow items in the car, though she did notice the same yellow candy that Rory did, which led her on a totally different train of thought. “Aunt Lucy!” Emmy exclaimed after letting her eyes rest on the candy for a few moments. “Do we have any snacks!?” Alas, there were not any snacks to be had – or at least none that her aunt and uncle were willing to relinquish. It was probably for the better, Emmy thought, since they were going to be gorging themselves in berries in approximately one hour and fifty-two minutes. Remembering that she had been playing a game with Rory, Emmy turned to him. “Uh…I don’t remember.” She admitted. Curse that short attention span.

Rory jumped a little when Emmy asked her aunt and uncle whether or not they had snacks. He'd been so focused on their game, he hadn't expected the outburst, though he knew her well enough that he should have. They didn't have snacks though, so Emmy turned her attention back to the game ... and then admitted she didn't remember what she'd chosen. Rory laughed. "Ok, then you go again," he told her. He'd have to answer faster this time if he ever wanted to have a turn. Not that he minded guessing. This was definitely better than nothing.

01 june, 2005 Emmy was relieved that Rory wasn’t too angry about the fact that she had forgotten what he was supposed to be looking for. “No, you go.” Emmy insisted. She was better at guessing objects than finding one for Rory to guess, mostly because of her attention span. That, and it was a lot easier to find something of a specific color than to choose one object out of the hundreds possible in the car to guess. Emmy kicked her legs idly at the back of the seat, and then glanced at the car’s clock. An hour and fifty-one minutes left. She had thought that she wasn’t going to be bored because Rory was there, but Emmy sometimes forgot how antsy she could get if she didn’t have anything fun to focus on.

Rory laughed when she insisted for him to go. "all right. I spy with my little eye ... something blue," He told her, eying the cap to a water bottle nearby. He wasn't sure if this game was going to be able to keep Emmy's attention for long. "How long is the ride there," he asked curiously. He was trying to think of something they could do that would keep Emmy's attention for longer, since he knew this game wouldn't last too much longer, even if she did guess correctly.

01 june, 2005 Blue, blue, blue. Emmy began scanning the car for blue objects, until her eyes alighted upon the cap to a water bottle. “That.” She said, pointing to said water bottle instead of saying the name of the object. When Rory asked how long the ride was, Emmy glanced at the clock. “Only an hour and forty-nine minutes left!” She announced proudly. If she hadn’t known better, Emmy would have thought that she saw her uncle sigh. That wasn’t that long – the first ten minutes had flown by! And Emmy was so excited to get there that she wasn’t even going to bother her aunt and uncle about if they were there yet. She knew what the town near the farm looked like, so she would know when they were close.
