February 2024; Parvati’s office
“Ernie?” Parvati sighed as her ex-husband’s face appeared beyond the green flames into which she had placed her head. “Please don’t give me that look.” She didn’t want to fight; she didn’t have the time.
“No. Listen—” If he could just stop talking over her long enough to hear what she had to say, Parvati thought, then maybe he would realize that it was actually important. It concerned two of their closest friends.
She breathed out heavily. “Neville’s taken ill.” It hurt her to say it, especially with what little she knew of the circumstances. “He’s been taken to hospital,” she clarified. “It’s… beyond what Hannah’s able to do.” In other words, it wasn’t just the flu; that much was clear.
“No, I don’t know his condition.” She didn’t know when or if she would be receiving another update, though Neville’s health was what was most important. “From what I’ve been told, Hannah’s distraught, though.”
“No, of course I’m fine,” Parvati answered quickly, nearly pulling her head from the fireplace to rub her face. “Why wouldn’t I be fine? Astoria’s got everything under control. I—”
When in Merlin’s name had he last bothered to write them? “I-It’s just stress, Ernie.” No thanks to him, either, she thought. “I-I’ve been busy. That’s all it is.”
“I-I should go,” she lied. “Someone’s at the door.” But Parvati knew that there hadn’t been a sound.
