Dom smiled as she looked out across the Black Lake. For the first time in months, her mind was free without her really feeling like she had to try. She felt lighter than she had in ages and ... legitimately happy. It felt strangely foreign, though being cheerful was one of the facades she showed the world. When she was upset she rarely let others see that. To be truly happy and not pretending was a relief. She felt liberated and finally at peace. Sure, her struggles weren't gone. She still missed Ethan, still thought of him frequently, but all of a sudden it wasn't weighing her down anymore. She had no idea what made the difference, but she was happy for it.
As she stood in the chilly March air, Dom started humming. Why not? She was happy, after all. Dom wasn't really one to stand idly, however. After a moment, she walked over to the edge of the Lake. She missed the ice that used to cover the Black Lake, the weather was much too warm for it now, though it was still quite cold it wasn't freezing outside anymore. She picked up two nearby rocks and transfigured them into two large bowls. She dipped both the bowls in water and pulled them out, pointing her wand at the water inside and muttering "Glacius." The water froze and Dom tipped the ice out of each bowl, placing it in the water. "And go!" She said, louder than she needed to as she grinned to herself. Really? She was racing ice now? Rather, watching to see which one would melt first. This was more like the old Dom, finding something to do when she was bored. She looked around, wondering if someone was nearby that she could convince to join her.

@dominique Scorpius had started to take a liking for walks across the grounds when he had free time. In the past, time where he wasn’t studying or playing Quidditch or chess had been relegated for even more studying. Not that he thought that was a bad thing anymore, just that he was more than confident in his academics these days. Plus he had started NEWT studies at the start of the term, so taking a break now and again wasn’t going to kill him. If he had learned anything from the past few months, relaxation helped clear his mind and always ended up resulting in a higher quality work ethic than what he had before. Today’s walk wasn’t anything special; just a leisurely stroll across the grounds and around the lake. During his problems with Rose he found himself circling the lake endlessly, hoping that staring at the ripples on the water would somehow help him make sense of everything. He knew that it didn’t make sense, but he also hadn’t been thinking reasonably in the first place. That was all behind him now, but there was still a certain level of comfort that came with the lake, so he continued. Coupled with the aforementioned relaxation techniques, Scorpius felt like a new man. These days, that was starting to look like a good thing.
Picking up small rocks every now and again to toss them into the lake, Scorpius barely noticed that there was someone on the shore ahead of him until he practically walked up on them. He wasn’t as close to the water as the girl was, but he could still see what she was doing. She turned something into ice and then sent it out onto the water. Tilting his head inquisitively, Scorpius found his legs moving towards her before he knew it. Stopping next to the girl, he glanced at her to see who it was. Dominique Weasley. Another one. It was almost laughable these days. He couldn’t escape them no matter how hard he tried. Not that he was complaining though. Figuring out their dynamics over the years was way more interesting the deeper he went down the rabbit hole. “What’s going on here?” he asked, laughing somewhat as he watched the ice start to melt in the water.

Dom smiled when she noticed that someone was approaching her. She considered calling to them and demanding they come, but it seemed as though they already were, so she'd hold back a little and try not to be overbearing. She turned back to her ice. Nope, it still wasn't melted. Then she looked back over at him and recognized the boy. Honestly, rooming with Rose it would be impossible for Dom to not recognize him. It was Scorpius Malfoy. What was he doing out here? Then he reached her and started laughing as he looked out at the ice and asked what was going on. Dom laughed as well, knowing that this probably looked ridiculous. Oh well. She shrugged, "I was bored," she answered simply, "so I'm making ice and seeing how long it takes for it to melt." Now that she said it out loud, it sounded kind of stupid, but Dom didn't really care. She never really cared what other people thought about her, so why should she start now? "You want to join me?" She asked with a smile, patting the ground beside her. "Or do you have better things to do with your time?" she lifted an eyebrow teasingly. She was proud of herself. This was more how she would have acted a year ago and she was glad to have finally found herself again. She wasn't exactly sure what made the difference, but she was relieved and also feeling a little giddy. This felt so good.

@dominique Dominique was…bored. Where had he heard that line a thousand times before? Lily came to mind immediately. That was a hard one to miss, seeing as he was always hanging around Al and she was steering clear of him unless her highness decided to grace them with her presence. That wasn’t to say that Dominique and Lily were the same people; far from it actually. There was probably a lot that Lily lacked that her cousin didn’t. Things that he wasn’t comfortable saying out loud because he was sure he’d have Albus and half of Gryffindor jump him in a dark alley and beat him up. That didn’t detract from the fact that the cousins knew how to make the most of everything, and he had never had a dull moment with any of them. If he had, well, Rose might have been an afterthought at this point. “How strong is the spell you’re using? Because that might give it a higher resistance to normal lake water,” Scorpius reasoned, noting that the ice hadn’t shrunk much from when he had first approached the Ravenclaw.
“Better things? You make it sound like I’m one of those people,” he laughed. He got that a lot. Unfortunately that was baggage that came with the last name. Scorpius had made sure to make it quite clear over the years that he wasn’t the same as his parents and grandparents. Anyone that had taken his mum’s class would know that already though. Despite being an unpopular opinion, people could change. From what he understood of the past, that was exactly what had happened with the Malfoy family. Old ties that weren’t strong anymore eventually snapped under the pressure. Things were said and done that were irrevocable to this day, but those involved had atoned for it. The most important part was that he was not one of those old-school Pureblood families that everyone got in a tizzy about. Blood status determined absolutely nothing these days, as far as he was concerned. “Show me how you did this. I’m interested now.”

Dom looked up at him curiously when he started asking about the strength of her spell. She shrugged. "I used Glacius. I guess I should have changed another variable of some kind, since the two ice blocks are exactly the same, except for the fact that they came from different bowls ... of the same size." Because that was effective. Why did she make an experiment with no variables? Blast it all, she was supposed to be the epitome of a Ravenclaw. She looked at the ice, which still hadn't changed much. "You have any suggestions of what I should change next time?" she asked.
Scorpius made some comment about those people. "Those people?" she asked, lifting an eyebrow at him, though the corner of her lips turned up, ruining the skeptic attitude she was trying to keep up. "I don't even know what you mean by those people. Besides, I don't pay attention to prejudices, unless they're proven to me. So you're fine." Really though, all Dom paid attention to was what people did in front of her. She didn't judge people according to what others said. She'd listen if people wanted to talk to her about anything, but she reserved judgment for later. She wasn't entirely sure whether or not Scorpius would believe her, really they'd never done anything with one another before. Then he told her to show him what she did. Dom shrugged at him, an obvious smirk covering her face. "Sorry, I can only show you if you agree to join me. I don't show my secrets to people who tower above me and won't sit down and relax." She watched him, curious about what he'd do now. If he really wanted to know, he'd join her on the ground.

@dominique Glacius. That was a relatively basic ice spell, though it had its advantages on occasion. For one, an extremely delicate hand could use it to form lovely ice sculptures, should they wish to do so. Scorpius was far from achieving that skill level with it, since it simply didn’t interest him to spend hours upon hours freezing water just to make a flower or statue out of ice. There were certain people and occasions where he would change his tune and follow through with that, but today wasn’t that day, and he had yet to do it so far. That didn’t change the fact that he was captivated by what Dominique was doing here though. She was explaining how the two ice blocks were exactly the same, down to being formed in the same manner. At least she was aware of the fact that she hadn’t created a variable for the experiment. Upon inquiring what she should do next, Scorpius detailed just that. “Either make one of them smaller in size, or use less spell on it, if that makes sense.” It did to him, so he was sure Dominque would understand what he meant. Scorpius was almost positive that the effects of Glacius were prolonged if the user was either highly proficient in the spell, or had placed more effort into it. Considering how gung-ho the Ravenclaw was about figuring out the melting times, it was possible that she had put a little too much into it.
Scorpius chuckled at Dominque’s reaction. That was surely a different way to look at all of it. It was certainly refreshing. “I’m sure you know what I mean, but enough of that,” he said, clapping his hands together. “I’m more interested in helping you get to the bottom of this experiment. No time to waste, considering we’re going to thoroughly investigate every possible caveat of this spell.” Scorpius was sure that Dominique knew not to bite off more than she could chew, because if it were to ever happen, it would be with him. Now that he was investing his time into it, Scorpius was ready to give it everything that he had. “So where do we start?”

When she said the spell she used, the Slytherin boy seemed to contemplate that for a bit. At least, he didn't say anything before Dom explained her experiment in its entirety. He did seem fascinated by what Dom was doing however, which was something she loved. She liked surprising people and doing the unexpected and Scorpius seemed uncommonly interested in her little experiment. That was intriguing to her. She nodded and smiled when he explained what she should do to change the experiment. Those were the things she thought of as well, but she'd asked to try and get him involved, mostly because this would be much more fun if she had someone join her and Scorpius was just as good as anyone else. "Hmm ... well how about we have you perform the spell on them this time," she suggested as she flicked her wand, sending her ice cubes further out into the Lake. She grabbed the containers, dipping them both in the water and pulling them out, setting them down on the ground between them, disregarding them for a moment as she continued to talk with him. "Then after, if we're still interested," which she would be, "We can try it with different sizes of ice." Despite having sent her original ice cubes further into the lake, Dom still kept an eye on them, wondering how long it would take for them to melt.
She winked at him when he argued that she knew what he meant and then said that he was done talking about it. That was fine with her. He felt comfortable around her, which was what she cared about, after all. Dom wanted someone to join her and she couldn't remember ever doing something with Scorpius before so this was new and she expected to have fun with it. "No time to waste. I'm just glad someone wants to experiment with me," she agreed cheerily, tipping her head to the side curiously at his next comment. "Every caveat? How many do you expect there to be?" Dom teased. Oh yes, she was definitely going to have a fun time with him. gesturing to the bowls still sitting on the ground in between them. "If you will," she encouraged, gesturing to the bowls between them. "And be careful not to use the same amount of spell on both of them." She watched him curiously, interested to see how he performed the spell. It reacted differently to everyone, as far as she knew, and she wanted to see how much control Scorpius had over it.

@dominique Scorpius grinned when Dominique asked him to try out the spell this time. Perfect. He wondered if she could tell that he was itching to test the experiment. The Slytherin watched as she tossed the current ice blocks out into the lake and proceeded to refill the bowls. “Works for me,” he beamed as he pulled his wand from his jacket pocket. The spell was Glacius. Simple enough. Scorpius was positive that he hadn’t used the ice spell in a good while. Fire was a more popular choice, and certainly more reasonable to use on a daily basis. It was also easier to gauge exactly how much he was using, since going overboard with fire potentially meant burning down half the castle. Pointing his wand at the bowls, he cast the spell, making sure to make them solid, but not to the point of overdoing it on one of them. Certain degrees of Glacius had the potential to spill over and effect the water’s surroundings, and the last thing he wanted to do was freeze over the lake. It seemed to work as he intended though, and the water was frozen solid. He kneeled down and knocked on both of them to make sure they were solid enough. The hard thumping response on his knuckles said they were. They felt similar, though whether they were or not was what they were about to find out. He had put a little more into the one over the other.
“Well, I suppose the different variations in the amount of water could present us with any number of results, as well as the spell strength. It is an experiment after all,” he stated matter-of-factly as he stood back up. He supposed the next step was to race them and see what happened. “I’ll let you do the honors of racing them Miss Weasley,” he said as he stepped back and crossed his arms so that he could observe his experiment better. If he had to guess, the obvious result would be that the ice block with less spell into it would melt first, seeing as its magical structure and integrity would more than likely give way to the water before the stronger one would. That was just his theory though.

Scorpius seemed very pleased at her suggestion for him to do the spell. She watched him, interested to see if he had some sort of plan, or just was excited to get involved. It was interesting, doing something like this with someone she'd never really interacted with before. She was excited. She watched him carefully freeze the water and smirked to himself. Well, the boy certainly was precise, which was a good thing for the sake of the experiment. Dom definitely wasn't very good at that herself, as many people could attest to. It seemed like he did the job well, putting less ...effort? magic? into one ice cube than the other. This was definitely going to be an interesting experiment.
She grinned when he seemed to feel the need to explain how the differences in the spell and amount of water would change the result. Dom laughed, "Yes, but you're planning on trying to test all of the possibilities?" she clarified. If that was indeed what he planned on, they would be here all week. As intrigued as Dom was by the experiment, she knew her interest would not last that long. She would end up leaving before it was over. She rolled her eyes when he said he would let her "do the honors". Yes, so much honor. He was very proper, which was intriguing and annoying at the same time. She decided to focus more on the intriguing part. Before moving toward the experiment, she turned to him and made a face. "It's Dom." She emphasized her name. "Not Miss Weasley." Of course, she was proud of being a Weasley, but even more proud of being herself and Dom was her name. She lifted an eyebrow at his stance as he watched the Lake. How could someone stand being so serious like that all the time? She took out the ice cubes and non-verbally levitated them over the water, glancing over at him. "Are you ready, sir?" she teased, unable to help herself. At his signal, she was ready to release the ice into the water, but since he was so intent on the experiment, she'd wait. If only because it gave her more chances to tease him.

@dominique “Of course I’m going to try all the possibilities,” Scorpius responded. “You are a Ravenclaw, right? I know a few who would take this as a perfect opportunity to conduct tests,” he joked. Her own cousin was probably one of them, amongst many others. There was only one true way to figure out the difference in the spell strength, and that was to repeatedly freeze the water again and again with slight variations. That was scientific experimentation 101. “I suppose we don’t need to try every variation of Glacius, but there are certainly different degrees of it that have to be tried out.” He was sure he didn’t need to mention that Dominique’s first attempt at it was inadmissible at this point, since he was the one freezing the water now. Maintaining a standard on one of the bowls was integral to the whole thing. So now that they were started, there was no flip-flopping back and forth between the two of them. He would make sure of that.
Dominique, no, Dom, corrected him on calling her Miss Weasley. “Sorry about that. Old habit.” He forgot that some of the family didn’t like that. Eliminated their individuality is what he supposed. It probably got tiring after a while, always hearing the same last name called over and over again, and seeing a dozen different heads turn at the same time. Scorpius knew what being attached to a name was like, so there was no problem with following through with her wishes. Made conversation easier that way anyways. “Whenever you’re ready, Dom.” Now was the time to see what exactly happened to the ice with less umph in it.

Scorpius said that he was planning on trying all the possibilities, teasing her about not wanting to and being a Ravenclaw. Dom rolled her eyes good-naturedly at him. "I am a Ravenclaw and I am also quite dedicated to this experiment. However, I am also a realist and trying all the possibilities would take ages. I mean, if you want to do this until it gets dark and meet again to keep going, I'm game, but I didn't think you were that dedicated to it." Dom hadn't planned on taking the experiment that far, but if he was going to ... well she wasn't going to let him take over her experiment. That was for darn sure. Then he seemed to be more reasonable, saying they didn't need to try every variation of the spell and Dom smiled, nodding. "Ok, I can definitely agree with that. Though to keep the experiment accurate, you are going to have to be the one to perform the spell each time." She smiled sweetly at him. "So just keep track of the strength of the spell you're using," she suggested, but she was sure he was already doing that.
She shrugged when he apologized and said calling her "Miss Weasley" was a habit. "It's fine. That's just what people call my sister and some of my cousins. I'm not proper enough for that," Dom gave a laugh. Really calling her Miss anything wouldn't fit because Dom rarely followed proper rules of society, as opposed to her partner in this experiment. She grinned at him when he called her Dom and then nodded once before counting down. "Three, two, one!" She flipped over the containers and each cube of ice fell into the water with a small splash. Dom started watching them instantly. The one on the right was hit with less of the spell, if she paid attention. Though it just hit the water, it already seemed slightly smaller than the other. She watched the cubes with fascination. This time the melting was actually happening, as opposed to her first failed attempt. At least it would be more interesting now.

@dominique So that was the game she was playing, was it? He had forgotten that Ravenclaw had realists in it as well, on top of all the crazy book smart students. There had been times where he had wondered why he wasn’t placed amongst their ranks as well, considering the fact that he was near the tippy-top of the class. At other points, Scorpius knew exactly why he was a Slytherin. While he tried to keep the arrogance and superiority at bay, there were certainly occasions where it slipped through the cracks that he tried to maintain painstakingly. There were still certain things that he took liberty of for his own personal gain. That was more Slytherin than Ravenclaw in his books. “Point made,” he laughed. “I have things to do that are slightly more important than this anyways.” Like studying. He didn’t say it though, because he knew how dumb that sounded. Constant studying wasn’t always the best idea in the world, and breaks like this had their moments. But eventually he would have to get back at it and grind away once again. “Fine with me,” Scorpius commented. He had planned to keep the spells consistent to begin with. It would be easier that way. “A lot of people never put the time into learning that spells have different degrees of strength. There’s a reason some can light a stove with Incendio, and others can burn a house down with it.” That was relatively dark, but he knew it was true. The same could be said about Aguamenti, and even Glacius.
Not proper enough. Scorpius laughed again. He understood the reasoning behind it. He doubted Victoire liked being called ‘Miss Weasley’ as well. In their few interactions, that much was clear. “You sound like Lily,” he mentioned as she sent the ice cubes out across the water. “Though she would probably punch me for calling her by her last name…” Or do other things. The pint-sized Gryffindor didn’t have a limiter. The stories Albus had about his sister were unbelievable to most, but Scorpius knew better than to doubt them.
Returning his attention to the experiment, Scorpius was glad to see that his initial hypothesis was coming true. The ice block with less spell was melting faster. The best part? There was barely any difference in how much he had used. The control was melting as well, though not nearly as fast. That one had the standard Glacius attached to it, so no wonder it was taking a little longer. The magical bonds were stronger with that one, and mere lake water stood little chance to break those down in an instant. “I think we have a clear winner here,” Scorpius proclaimed as the weaker ice cube continued to dissipate.

Dom smiled, proud of herself when Scorpius admitted that she made a good point. Of course he had other things he wanted to do with his day. That wasn't a surprise to her in the slightest. She just wanted to make sure she knew what his plans were before she started expecting things, like for him to stay and experiment with her all day. Now they both knew what to expect. Then he started explaining that some spells had different strengths. Dom already knew this, but she let the Slytherin boy explain it to her. It wasn't like it hurt anything to have him explaining that he was using differing strengths with the spell Glacius. She nodded as he finished, "Yes, that makes sense." No need making him feel bad for explaining something she already knew. She just hadn't been thinking about that with her first trial of the experiment. She'd be much more thorough next time.
Scorpius laughed when she said she wasn't proper and Dom grinned. She didn't mind not being proper. In fact, it was probably one of the benefits of being herself. No one really expected Dom to do things the proper way, they all knew she did things however she wanted to. Then she laughed when he said she sounded like Lily. "Lily and I are kindred spirits," she agreed easily. He mentioned Lily punching and Dom laughed again. "I'm not surprised. She's a little more physical then I am." Ok, a lot more physical, but that wasn't a bad thing. It fit Lily.
Dom nodded when Scorpius mentioned there was a clear winner. She dipped the containers back into the water and extended them towards him once more. "Yes there is. Now let's try it again just to make sure before we change the size of the containers instead." She waited for him to take the containers, watching expectantly.

@dominique Sometimes Scorpius wondered if he actually had to explain things as much as he did. He tended to forget that they were all getting a relatively similar education at Hogwarts, and while interests could be in different areas of magic or research, for the most part, any typical student would know a little bit about what he had just spouted out. He simply couldn’t help it though. Once he was going on about something he had passion for, which was virtually anything complicated and magical, or both at the same time, it was hard to stop himself. Dominique was going to be a victim to that today. That was unfortunate for her. They seemed to agree that she and Lily were relatively the same, at least on their philosophies about life. The way the Ravenclaw put it, a ‘kindred spirit’ if you will, was certainly interesting take on their lifestyle. Scorpius would say that Lily was more out of control than anything else, but who was he to judge how she did things? “Just a little physical,” he affirmed. They both knew how Lily actually was. Any interaction with her was either going to end in oodles of fun or with someone in the hospital wing. Usually that meant the person that was tagging along with her. That was just how it worked.
Dom seemed content with the results of the first round, and had brought the bowls back in, re-upping their fill of water and moving them towards him. This was going to be the real test now; would the instability of too little or too much Glacius be the real difference, or would it have to do with the amount of ice. Scorpius performed the spell as necessary, the one being the same as it had been before, and the second being stronger this time. “Alright, so the one is the normal, and the second one should be more than usual,” the Slytherin repeated his process back to Dom. “I think the normal one will melt faster, just based on the fact that there’s less ice and strength to it, but anything is possible.”

Scorpius mentioned that Lily was "just a little physical", probably saying that Dom wasn't since they seemed to be comparing the two, and Dom snorted. "Sure. A little," she responded sarcastically. Everyone who knew her cousin at all, or even just watched her during free moments, would easily see that Lily was very physical. She liked to do things, with people and objects. Like, climbing trees and pulling people around with her.
Dom watched as Scorpius did the spell again, watching curiously. She could tell just by watching the spell which one was which, but maybe not everyone could do that. It took a bit of focusing, but you could tell which one got more of the spell in it if you watched closely. She nodded when Scorpius explained which was which. She nodded, "I think you're right. Adding the fact that the one with less of the spell melted faster last time." That seemed reasonable to her. She took the containers and held them over the water, counting down and tipping them in once more. The normal one started to melt faster and she grinned at Scorpius, nodding at him. Then she sighed, "Ok, so what are we going to do to make this more interesting?" She asked. Of course, Dom had a few ideas, but she'd give him a chance first.
