A carnival. Scorpius remembered going to a muggle one when he was little, his mother having the summers off of work. There weren't too many things that were similar here to that one though. Most of the games were adapted and modified for the magical crowd. In a way, that made it that much more fun. He supposed muggleborns, or at least those that had grown up going to the regular kinds of carnivals, would enjoy this kind of change. Wandering around for a while, Scorpius took note of the more interesting games that weren't simply based on luck. He wanted a challenge from some of them. He was taking a study break, after all. Then it caught his eye. There was a game that he remembered seeing all those years ago: bobbing for apples. Approaching the stall, he asked if there was a catch to it. Who knew if there was a grindylow lurking beneath the water, waiting to pinch an unwary apple bobber's nose. The person running the stand said it was the normal kind, and Scorpius forked over some of the tokens he had been given upon his arrival. Hands on the side of the barrel, he stuck his face down into the water.

Bobbing for apples! Georgie didn’t know that they had things this Muggle-ish, and this American at the carnival. Any thoughts she had about being worried or feeling sick flew right out of her head when she saw that huge wooden barrel. Georgie then realized something: bobbing for apples meant water. She gulped a little, but was determined not to let that ruin her fun. She had been working on Impervius charms for quite a while now, and was hoping that the spell would be enough to keep her from having visions, at least for the brief time her head would have to be in the water to bob. Georgie cast the spell once, and then again, just in case. She approached the barrel, and took a deep breath, bracing herself for more than just the cold water. Georgie plunged her head in, her teeth finding an apple easily. She could feel the visions nipping at the edges of her consciousness, but her charms appeared to be holding. Georgie emerged from the water, apple clenched in beneath her teeth. She was smiling broadly, more broadly than she thought possible. She was going to have to tell her mama – just like that, the smile disappeared. Georgie spat the apple out, and accepted a fluffy white towel that a carnie handed to her, wrapping her hair in it so that she wouldn’t drip on herself after the Impervius charms had worn off.

Despite his best efforts, Royal still couldn’t help feel like he was a little bit off. What he really needed was something that would force him to put his head on straight. When Royal saw that there was a barrel full of water, he went over to go stick his head in it, but was told that it was a game of some sort. What sort of game involved sticking your head in a barrel of water, Royal had no clue, but he flipped the last of his tokens at the carnie. He wasn’t really trying to meet the objective of the game – he just wanted to let the cold water shock him back into normalcy… whatever that meant these days. However, when he emerged without an apple, the carnie told him to keep trying until he got one. Royal then spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to grab an apple between his teeth, looking rather uncoordinated as he did so. When he finally did manage to get an apple, he had begun to shiver with the chilliness of the water… but he was smiling, so that was a start.

Bobbing for apples. When Poe had first seen the barrel, his first thought was that his dog form would be much, much better at the game than his human one. Pit bulls were known for their bite strength, and Poe pitied any apple that found itself between the jaws of any pit bull, especially him in Animagus form. Sadly, Poe was still trying to keep that whole thing a bit of a secret, which meant that shifting in front of a crowd full of people was out of the question. Poe approached the barrel with an affable smile on his face, and the carnie working there was instantly chatting him up, asking how he was enjoying the carnival and everything. Reminded him a bit of Karen, actually. She was pretty chatty. (And everything seemed to be reminding him of her, now that he knew she wasn't just some hallucination he had had in order to cope with whatever the hell had been wrong with him that night.) Poe had to explain that, due to his Muggle mother, he already knew how to play the game, to which the carnie beamed as if he had just told her he had found the key to world peace or something. He was told to go right ahead in a chipper voice, so Poe dunked his head in the barrel and began to bob for apples.

Imogen was on her way back to Hogwarts - she still had some papers to grade before the weekend was up - when she saw a man walking past her, dripping wet. For a moment, Im had thought that maybe he was a carnie who had dressed as a mermaid for the dunk tank, but that didn't make sense - she had just passed the dunk tank, so he couldn't have been coming from there. She paused where she was standing, and about two minutes later, another soaking wet person came from the same direction. Imogen didn't talk to him or anything, just moved in the direction that he was coming from. For the next ten minutes or so, she followed the trail that wet people left behind, until she found the source of all of the madness... a barrel of water? It didn't take Im much longer observing to see that people weren't just putting their heads underwater for fun. They appeared to be... looking for apples? Imogen was honestly curious. She had been to arcades and carnivals before, but she had never seen this bizarre game before... and she kind of wanted to try it. The line wasn't long, since it didn't take much time to grab an apple with your teeth, and after watching so many others play, Im thought she had a solid strategy. When it was her turn, Imogen stuck her head into the barrel unceremoniously, hoping that her observation had paid off.

There were very many disadvantages to being a werewolf, from constantly being sickly to being hated by cats everywhere. In fact, Jamie wasn't sure that she could think of a single advantage to being a werewolf... except for the teeth. Jamie's teeth were one of many of her characteristics that she was rather proud of. Whenever she didn't know whether or not something special about her was particular just to her, Jamie assumed that it was because of her lycanthropy. It was true that she had researched the matter quite extensively, but not many werewolves were willing to let themselves be tested for abnormalities, which made sense to Jamie. She wouldn't want to be someone else's lab experiment, either. When Jamie saw the barrel of apples, though, she knew she just had to try bobbing for one. She knew the gist of the game, though she had never had occasion to try for herself. Jamie was hoping that her particularly strong chompers would do her well this time, and happily got in line to apple bob.

A CARNIVAL! Oh was Lily ready for this! She didn't even have the time to ask anyone else to join her, because she was out the portrait of the common room in seconds flat. She could worry about finding other people later. Right now she needed cotton candy, and butterbeer, and games, and practically anything she could get her hands on that was either sugar or adrenaline inducing. Even the run from the castle to the carnival worked for her.
Lily didn't even take the time to thank the person that handed her tokens for the games. While it was technically rude, she didn't have the time for shenanigans. First stop? No clue. Some stand that had barrels and people dunking their heads into them. She tossed the two tokens at the worker and submerged her head into the barrel instantly. Blinking a few times with her head underwater, she spotted that the things in the barrel were apples. That was boring.

It was not a secret that Theodosia detested most things Muggle. The things were barely better than animals, and most of their ideas proved that point. Carnivals, though... carnivals were interesting. Which, Theodosia thought, probably meant that a Muggle had stolen the idea from a wizard and passed it off as their own. She was having a good time doing little, innocuous things like tripping running children and sliding the sticks of various candies and other food items out of hands when their owners backs were turns. It was fun to ruin someone else's day, Theodosia thought, especially when she could be assured that the person was Muggle. Anyone who looked too at home in the carnival was basically inviting Theodosia to harass them. She was so busy that she barely had any time to play any games for herself (though she had gotten quite a few tickets under suspicious circumstances). Theo wasn't looking for anything to do, but a carnie beckoned her over, and told her that she could bob for apples, because the person in front of her had accidentally paid too many tokens. Theo wasn't going to say no to an offer like that. She was feeling a bit peckish, anyways, and an apple was probably a healthier snack than half of the sugar-filled swill in the carnival. Theodosia wasn't fond of getting her hair wet, but she emerged with a bright, crisp red apple between her teeth, which she promptly began to snack on.

Lysander was having a moral dilemma. He had noticed the apple bob station a while ago, since there was a fair number of people crowded around it. It was strange, how such a simple game could garner so much attention. His moral dilemma had nothing to do with the number of people by the game, of course, but whether or not he ought to play it. From what Sander could tell, part of the challenge of the game was that once your face was under the water you couldn't see where anything was, causing you to bumble blindly (and give everyone else around you a laugh). Sander wouldn't have that problem, though. His eye could see just as well below water as it could above, and it could also swivel and give him direction towards the apple he was seeking without him having to move his whole face. Eventually, Sander decided that it wasn't immoral to want to have a little bit of fun at the carnival. He would just try not to use his advantage too much. The Ravenclaw gave the carnie a weak smile as he approached, half-expecting to be asked to remove his eye, but luckily for him, everything went smoothly, and he was allowed to bob.

After the horribleness that had been creating his own wand out of glitter, of all things, Aras had lowered his expectations for the rest of the carnival. It looked like he had been right to, since barely anything was truly igniting his interest. Surprisingly, it was the understated things that were catching his attention, like booths without a flashy sign or simple games that didn't involve a lot of magic to them. When he saw the bobbing for apples sign, Aras was intrigued. That didn't sound like something that wizards would normally do, especially not wizards like himself, who hadn't really interacted with the Muggle world. It took him quite a bit to figure out the objective of the game. It seemed kind of silly to him that they had to grab an apple with their teeth when their hands would work just as well - and be much more sanitary - but apparently people were having fun, and Aras didn't want to ruin that by asking questions that some could deem as rude. When he approached the barrel, the man rather floundered, until eventually the carnie took pity on him, and allowed him to scoop up the apple with his hands, like he had wanted to in the first place. She had the decency to look embarrassed by the handicap, but Aras didn't care. He would not be playing that game ever again, if he could help it.

Fred had been so busy harassing clowns (and students) that he hadn't actually gotten around to playing any of the many games that the carnival promised. He had really wanted to smash a pasty in a carnie's face, but apparently word about him had gotten around, and he had just been scowled at when he tried to play the game. Oh well - there was a price to fame, and a higher price to infamy. Fred hoped that one day he could have both. He had found his way to a little corner of the carnival, hopefully one where his antics had not yet reached, and was currently looking for something to do. Most of the carnies looked rather bored - Fred couldn't see why, but he figured that even carnivals could get a little monotonous if that was what you did for a living - but one in particular looked pleased to be there. Whether she was a new hire or, like Fred, still couldn't believe that she actually got paid to do what she was doing, he didn't know, but the Gryffindor was drawn to the charming smile. He was a little put out to find that her game was a little boring - just sticking your head in a barrel to get an apple - but decided that since most of the other carnival booths weren't going to let him play, he might as well spend a few of his tokens on making a happy carnie even happier.

The day was drawing to a close, and Viola was oddly disappointed. It wasn't often that they got to spend an entire day with Maria, uninterrupted by classes or studying or other obligations. Honestly, it was only Maria that normally got interrupted, since she had family and a string of lovers at Hogwarts. All Viola really had was Brandon and Roxy, and neither of them seemed particularly eager to seek them out, even if the two were pleased to see Viola when they did stop by. In the interest of milking every possible second with their girlfriend, Viola had asked to play just about every game that they saw on the way out of the carnival. It wasn't the most subtle strategy, but as Viola understood things, Maria enjoyed the less subtle things in life, anyways. When they came to the apple bob barrel, Viola's strategy didn't waver, even though they disliked the idea of putting their head under the water. One of the best things about boats, which Viola loved, was that you never actually had to get beneath the water. It was just going to be a few seconds, Viola assured themself. With a deep breath (and a bit of a gulp), they went searching for an underwater apple.
