He had kissed his best friend. Weren't Ravenclaw's supposed to be smart? Especially him, who had spent 9 years of his life studying psychology and how people acted and behaved and thought? He who was so good at reading people fell victim to human nature as much as any of the people that he observed regularly. He wasn't sure exactly how he felt about it. He was pretty sure that he felt romantically towards Kinsey, and since she had been so happy and joyful after their kisses, he was sure that she liked him too. But, what if that wasn't enough? Or too much? What if they dated and their relationship became too awkward and they lost their connection and their friendship? That would kill him. He hadn't meant for any of this to happen. He just... hadn't been able to control himself, which he hated thinking. It had been an accident, he had got caught up in the moment and kissed her. But she had kissed him back.
Riley sat on a stone bench in the courtyard that day during one of his free periods snacking on carrot sticks and thinking about the events of yesterday. He was glad not to feel sick at all after their fall into the lake and their time spent damp, but his head felt cloudy nonetheless.

Last night when Kinsey went to bed she felt peaceful and happy and most of all, calm. That was a rare occurrence for her, but she definitely took advantage of it. She fell asleep reminiscing the events of the day and especially her time with Riley.
When she woke up the next day was when the confusion set in. So ... obviously Riley liked her at least a little bit, but Kinsey didn't know how much. Rather, she didn't know what yesterday actually meant. Did it mean that he wanted them to be more than friends or did he get caught up in the moment at the River? Did kissing mean one was dating or was it something that friends did? Kinsey had no idea what to think. She'd never been in a relationship with anyone before and fled wildly unprepared for the confusion of it all. She liked Riley. That much she knew, but she had no idea what he thought. He called her beautiful, liked her hair curly (for which reason she did nothing with it today) but she didn't know what that all meant, if anything. What if he just wanted to be friends? Wait. What if this ruined their friendship, their moments yesterday? She couldn't think anything through. All she knew was that she didn't want to lose Riley. Even if all he wanted was to be her friend (who kissed her that one time), she needed him in her life.
She couldn't focus at all that day. Classes were terrible, especially since she had ancient tubes and arithmancy that morning, which meant she hadn't seen Riley. She got out of class and started walking along, not really sure where she wanted to go. Then she saw him, sitting in the courtyard on his own, looking serious. Kinsey approached him slowly, maybe a little cautiously. "Riley?" she moved so she was standing close to the bench, but not too close. Maybe he wanted to be alone.

Riley was so lost in his own head that he hadn't even noticed his best friend approach him. He rarely found himself so distracted, normally, he was focused on those around him who were distracted, he found himself slipping. She appeared by his side and he blinked to clear his head, a smile already forming on his face. "Hey Kins!" he greeted her. "Come sit down" he insisted wondering if she was feeling as awkward as he was and that was why she was standing there awkwardly like that. "Carrot?" he held out his small Ziploc bag of snacks to her. He wanted to say something to her, he wanted to be able to talk to her like they had been talking for the past few weeks. He wanted everything to feel normal, and it kind of did, but it also kind of felt different and he wasn't sure which side to give into. "How were your classes this morning?" he asked her, he sort of hated that they didn't have the same schedule and they were in different classes from time to time. He found classes so much more interesting when she was sitting next to him. "How'd you sleep last night? Sorry I didn't see you this morning." he said.

Riley seemed so distracted, he didn't really notice her until she said something. Then he was smiling as he told her to come sit down next to him. Kinsey's heart fluttered excitedly and Kinsey shook her head slightly, trying to force herself to calm down. He wasn't going to kiss her out of nowhere. She'd love it, but while he was happy to see her, she didn't think that was a possibility. His intentions didn't seem romantic at all- though she hadn't really paid attention last night so how would she know- they just seemed normal. Of course, Kinsey moved to sit beside him almost immediately, loving how it felt to be beside him even nothing was happening between them at the moment. He offered her a carrot and Kinsey smiled and nodded, reaching forward to take one. "Thanks," she said, trying to think of something they could talk about. Why was this so awkward all of a sudden?
He was asking about her classes and Kinsey laughed. "They were fine. I was having a hard time focusing on them, to be honest." It was because of him. Her mind was full of worry during class about what would happen between the two of them, but she wasn't going to tell him that. Telling him would be one sure way to chase him away. "How was your morning?" she wasn't even sure what, if any, classes he had but she might as well return the question, with just a little difference. At his next question her smile widened. "I slept great," she told him, forcing herself to keep her gaze on his eyes and not look down at his lips. Was she always going to be so tempted by him? Man, she needed some self control. "It's fine, probably my fault. I slept so well I didn't want to get up. I missed breakfast entirely. Had to run down to the kitchens for a quick something before Arithmancy," Kinsey explained. She didn't know if he waited for her, but she didn't want him to feel bad.

The very last thing that Riley wanted was to make it awkward between them. He valued her so much more than he even realized and he didn't want to put her in any awkward or uncomfortable situations. And her certainly didn't want to loose her from his life. He was at a crossroads, and one that he didn't expect to come so soon. A crossroads between Friendship or Relationship. They had a choice to make, and he wanted to talk with her about it, but he wondered if it was too soon, or, maybe if she hadn't thought anything of the kiss yesterday, maybe to her it was just two friends. He certainly had never seen friends kiss like that, but he wasn't judgmental.
She sat next to him and took a carrot, which made him feel a little more comfortable since she seemed to be willing to at least be near him. She admitted that she was having a hard time focusing this morning on her lessons and he nodded, feeling the same. "Yeah, I couldn't focus much either." he admitted. And like her, it was because of them. Because of their kiss and their situation and the decisions that now faced them. He noticed as she spoke that she was working hard to keep her eyes up on his face and not let them wander, but wander where, he wondered. He also noticed immediately that she had left her hair curly and was curious if she had done so because of his comment last night. That had to be a sign, he figured, that she liked when he complimented her. "I went to breakfast early." he admitted with a nod. "I couldn't really sleep so I got up slightly before the sun did and just went down and read while I ate." he explained. He hadn't slept because he continued to reply the days events in his head until he began to overthink them.

When he said he couldn't focus, Kinsey was glad that she wasn't alone in that. "At least it wasn't just me," she told him. At the same time, she couldn't help but wonder why he was having a hard time focusing. Was it for the same reason as her? She couldn't decide if she wanted it to be or not. She wanted Riley to think about her and care for her, but at the same time the whole idea made her nervous and she didn't know why. She smiled when he admitted that he went to breakfast early. "Well then it's no wonder we didn't run into one another," she said. It made her feel a little bit better that he didn't wait for her. At least she didn't have to feel guilty about making him wait all morning for her. "So what are you doing out here?" Kinsey asked, pulling her gaze away from him and looking around. It was too hard to look at him without making it obvious that she wanted him to kiss her again. Kinsey needed to convince herself that this wasn't going to happen, mostly because she didn't want to get hurt. It was scary to know that after only a short while, Riley could hurt her more than anyone else. He meant more to her than anyone else did.

She wasn't the only one, that was for sure, he nodded along as she said that. She had to know that he had been thinking about her, right? He didn't know the full extent of her abilities, he knew she could read intentions, but he didn't know how far that went. He was trying his best to act normal, but on the inside all he could think about was how much he wanted to be able to put his arm around her right now, or kiss her again. It would be so nice to just hold her and have everyone know that they were together. That they were a couple. But he didn't want to scare her off, so he contained himself rather well. He decided to stay proper, he had been raised with manners and it was always best to keep them. "Oh I just came out for some fresh air." he admitted. Fresh air was the best when you needed to think, breathing properly sent moving oxygen to your brain which greatly enhanced brain performance. "And a little break from lessons." he smirked. "What about you? Did you come looking for me?" he asked, feeling bad for not waiting for her outside of her classroom or something. He really wasn't avoiding her. He just wanted to give her space if she wanted it.

Riley seemed ... different. Kinsey couldn't tell what was going on with him. As usual, his intentions were positive, but she wasn't touching him, so she couldn't sense what exactly they were. Granted, she expected them to be the same as always, that he wanted to protect and take care of her. That was all she really ever sensed from him, but she loved it. She loved him taking care of her. He said that he wanted some fresh air and for some reason Kinsey felt like she was in the way, but she didn't say anything right away. A small smile touched her lips once more when he asked what she was doing out here, if she was looking for him. "Of course. I mean, I was wandering around, but I was looking for you." Without even realizing it, honestly, but she was. She always wanted to spend her time with him, but now ... now she wondered if that was what he wanted. "I can ... let you have your fresh air alone ... if you want. I don't want to be in the way," she said softly, biting her lip nervously. She didn't know what she was doing or saying. She wanted to spend all her time with him, but not if he wanted to be alone. What did he want? Suddenly Kinsey felt more confused than she had all day. What was she supposed to do? How could yesterday be so enlightening when today was so confusing?

She admitted that she was looking for him and Riley smiled. He liked that she was as into their friendship as he was. He liked that she sought him out now as much as he sought her out. It was obvious that their friendship wasn't a one way street. They both needed each other. Kinsey needed him because he helped her to feel safe and protected and Riley needed her because she simply made him happy and made him feel wanted and useful. He was the middle child in his family, just like she was, and it often left him feeling like either he had to live up to his older brother or he wasn't worth it. But Kinsey saw him for who he was. She liked him and cared for him and didn't compare him to anyone. She was so special. "Kinsey no I don't want you to go." he insisted, taking her hand in his so she wouldn't leave. He sighed, he knew he couldn't avoid the subject forever and maybe it was best to just get it out of the way. "I don't want anything to be weird or awkward between us..." he admitted. "So should we... I don't know... talk about yesterday?" he asked, cocking one eyebrow and looking at her.

She waited nervously for his response when she said she could go. Kinsey didn't want to. She just wanted to be with Riley, but things were ... strange. She never expected things to change the way they were now and she was scared that she was going to lose Riley somehow. After mere seconds that seemed like ages, she felt him grab her hand and she turned her attention to his face again, sighing and smiling at him again. No, she wasn't about to cry from relief. At least, her eyes only got a little wet, just enough that it was easy to blink away. She opened her mouth and then closed it, not knowing what to say so she just squeezed his hand, hoping he would understand. He started talking again and she nodded. "I don't want it to be awkward either," she agreed instantly. "What do we talk about? I don't ... I've never done this before." Surely he knew that, but Kinsey couldn't help but say it. She just wanted things to be good with her and Riley. She didn't care what she had to do to make that happen.

Riley let out a deep breath. He honestly didn't know how to talk about the subject without making it awkward. There was always the possibility that she regretted yesterday and that she had let him kiss her. He didn't want to be rejected by her, not that he would have let her see him upset, and he would still be friends with her if she didn't want to be more than friends with him, he knew it would have been selfish to ruin their friendship over hurt feelings and he was a bigger person than that. "Okay well... I kissed you... and I really liked kissing you. And I..." he took another big breath to help calm him and to aid his confidence. "I like you, Kins. I think I like you as more than a friend. And hey, I understand if you don't like me. I didn't intend for this to happen it just kind of has..." he admitted. Merlin that was hard to say, not because he didn't mean it or want to say it, but because the fear that she wouldn't feel the same was so overwhelming. "But I don't want any of this to ruin our friendship because you're too important to me for me to even think about loosing you..."

Once again, he didn't say anything right away and Kinsey didn't know what to say. She was nervous and her heart was pounding and she was just waiting. Then he started to speak and Kinsey couldn't breathe. He liked kissing her ... he liked her. He liked her! As more than a friend and Kinsey's hand tightened around his. She didn't know what to say or think or anything. She knew it was her turn to say anything, but she seemed to be frozen and she couldn't seem to do anything. Then she finally took a breath, smiling at him and breathing out somewhat heavily. "Riley, you couldn't ever ruin our friendship," she started. She wanted to make sure that he knew that, no matter what, before she said anything else. "You just couldn't so don't even worry about it." Kinsey gave a short laugh, looking back up into his eyes. "I like you back, as more than a friend. I have since you touched me that first night, putting your jacket around my shoulders and then when you held me it just felt right. Riley, I've never felt like this about anyone." The fact made her nervous and excited, but mostly excited because he liked her back. She couldn't keep the smile off her face, even when she kept going. "You really mean you like me?" It was a little late for that, after she just kept talking and talking, but she had to double check and make sure.

Riley was glad and relieved when she insisted that there was no way that their friendship would be ruined and he really hoped that she meant that. he didn't want to scare her away. And he felt himself become even more relieved and relaxed when she admitted that she liked him the same way that he liked her. He almost couldn't believe what he was hearing because it felt way to good to be true. he almost felt like he had to proceed with caution in case he had misheard her. Maybe she said that she only liked him as a friend instead of saying that she liked him as more than a friend. But then she squeezed his hand and he knew he had heard right. "Since that first night." he repeated with a smile. He had to admit, he hadn't liked her that way since that very first night. He couldn't pinpoint the exact moment that he began to like her, maybe when she tripped in the stairwell. "I really mean it, Kins." he nodded. "An so um... I guess since we both like each other... we start dating?" he asked, half as a declaration and half asking. He had done this before, but he had never kissed a girl before he asked her out, he normally went a more traditional way.

He was smiling back at her and Kinsey felt herself starting to relax little by little. Then he told her that he did mean it and her smile widened. Riley asked if they should start dating and she found herself nodding. "I think that's a good idea," she said, biting her lip in excitement. She almost added "if you want to" but decided against it. He already made it clear that he liked her, so she didn't want to question it again. "So ... you're my boyfriend then?" Kinsey asked after a moment. She was new to this whole thing and didn't know if that was what came naturally. She started blushing a little and shook her head, "Sorry, I don't know what I'm doing. I've never actually ... been in a relationship before," she looked away now. Kinsey felt like a complete idiot, telling him that, but she kind of assumed he already knew it. Still, saying it out loud was embarrassing.

"Yeah I guess you're my girlfriend now." he nodded in agreement with a smile on his face. he wasn't sure why he still felt a little awkward, but maybe it was just because he felt so jittery and a part of him wanted to scream, but he was holding it back to at least give off the impression that he was a normal guy. She went on to apologize because she had never done this before, she had never been in a relationship before. He didn't care, if anything he felt honored that she was letting him be her first boyfriend. He assumed that he had been her first kiss also. "That's okay." he admitted. "Every relationship is different so no matter what we'll be figuring this all out together." he told her, taking his hand and brushing her cheek again before leaning down and kissing her once, gently.
