Edmund was doing all right today. It wasn't his best day, it wasn't his worst, but he just got out of Charms class and was thinking a walk on the grounds sounded nice. He didn't really have any reason for wanting to go outside, he just felt like it. Maybe being cooped up in class all day when the weather was starting to get so nice was getting to him. Either way, he just wanted to get out and he planned on it.
So he was making his way through the castle when he thought he felt someone looking at him. That was weird. He stopped and looked around, but couldn't see anyone. Then he thought he heard a chuckle before suddenly his feet were hexed together and he toppled to the ground. Great, someone's idea of a clever prank. Idiots. He reached into his bag and pulled out his wand so he could perform the counter curse, ignoring all the people around him.

River really didn't know Edmund Windsor, and he didn't really think there eas any reason to. The guy was often quite and minding his own business, much like River always was, so they didn't bother much with each other. Still, they were the same age and had taken some classes together. They knew each other well enough.
River wasn't in charms with him, though, but was in the third floor corridor right when someone heard Edmunds feet together. Normally River would have rushed to help but... Now that he was with Elaines crew he wasn't sure if that was appropriate. He watched as Edmund searched for his wand and then, eventually, moved toward him. "You got it?" he asked, trying to soind supportive. His voice was a little haran but he was trying to be helpful... Sort of.

Getting hexed was enough to make anyone annoyed, but Ed found himself a little more irritated when someone walked up to him once his wand was out, asking if he "had it". That was pointless, especially adding in the fact that he didn't sound like he wanted to help if Ed did need it. He looked up at the guy and recognized him as ... River? Maybe. He wasn't sure. Ed looked back down, fighting the desire to roll his eyes. "I'm fine," Edmund growled, muttering the counter curse under his breath and rising to his feet. He looked at the guy, undecided about whether he should just walk away or not.

Edmund said, or rather grumbled, that he was fine. River nodded. Then the guy stood and River raised his eyebrow, "nasty jinx. What did you do to deserve it?" his tone was still a bit pointed. He didn't bother trying to change it now. He had worked so hard on this reputation that it would be pointless to try and break away from it. It didn't really matter if Edmund liked him... In fact it was probably better if he didn't make friends with the guy. It couldn't really go anywhere, unless Vi thought it would be useful... But he doubted that. He was at her beck and call. Whatever she wanted was what he did, and right now she wanted him to be better, he assumed. Better for her.

It was definitely decided; Edmund did not like this kid. What was the point in coming over here just to watch Edmund struggle and then take care of himself, and then ask what he did to deserve it. Ed looked over at the guy and rolled his eyes, not even trying to hide his hostile attitude anymore. "I don't know. Why don't you go find the jerk who did it and ask them." Stupid pureblood maniac. Ed was fairly certain that was the only reason here that people were treated the way he just was. Was this guy really for real? He turned to leave then paused, "By the way, if you really want to find someone to talk to that badly, try someone you're not going to treat as an inferior. It'll probably go over better." Then Ed started walking away, fuming at the idiot behind him.

Edmund rolled his eyes and River knew that he had pushed his buttons. Well, wasn't that what River was trying to do? Push peoples buttons? He should have taken lessons from Dominic Dippet if he wanted to do that. The kid had tormented River enough over the years. Since River started hanging around Vi more he was spared. Dominic and Vi were 'friends' or something after all. Edmund had a good point, though. River didn't need to ask him if he deserved the jinx... but River wasn't going to be able to take Edmunds sass with silence out in the open like this. Then Edmund added that River should find someone who he wasn't going to treat like 'an inferior'.
River sighed, almost letting Edmund walk away but... "I didn't know muggle royalty could be inferior to anyone," he called after. "Maybe I should be bowing instead? Would that make you feel more at home?"

Edmund should walk away. He knew that, knew that stopping and talking to the guy definitely wasn't going to help him any. Obviously he was a self-righteous kid and wouldn't stop being a jerk no matter what. Which might have been the reason why Ed couldn't simply walk away.
Taking a deep breath, he stopped walking and slowly turned to face the Ravenclaw. He quirked an eye at the guy, "I didn't say I was inferior, just that you see me as inferior, which was obvious from the second you started talking. Didn't think I'd have to point that out to a Ravenclaw though," he mused. Really Ed was just trying to annoy him back now. Not that he would put much effort into it. He gave a sarcastic laugh at the next retort. Wow, this guy was definitely trying too hard. "What do I care if you bow? It's your life, do as you please." He rolled his eyes again, ignoring the last question. This boy didn't need to know that Hogwarts was more his home than any other place ever had been.

Edmund turned around and River swallowed hard, but tried not to look nervous. Edmunds voice was... well, what River expected. Harsh and unforgiving, but also sort of... relaxed. Like Edmund was comfortable with fighting. Like he had a lot of practice. That laugh was well practice, too, River was sure of it. "I will do as I please," River snapped. "That's what I was doing, asking what your little jinx issue was all about until you basically told me to shove off," he said, realizing his feet were stepping toward Edmund. What on earth was he going to do? He was going to get himself killed, that's what. He didn't know how good of a dueler Edmund was though and River was good. Well, better than he used to be. Better than he ever thought he could be, personally.

The more they talked, the more Edmund saw this guy as a child, even though they were in the same year. The Ravenclaw's retorts were weak and childish and this really wasn't worth Edmund's time. Which was a disappointment because Edmund really was in the mood for a good argument. Obviously he wouldn't be getting one from this. His eyebrow lifted and a smirk crossed his face. Edmund wasn't trying to make the kid do anything and yet he was acting like Edmund was defying him entirely. It was ... entertaining in an annoying way. "Well, if you're trying to actually figure out what my little jinx issue was about, you might want to go about it a different way. Unless you're just trying to irritate people. Then you did it perfectly." He glared at the guy in front of him, before remembering he wasn't worth Ed's time. Apparently he was being sucked into this ridiculously childish argument. The boy was stepping closer to Ed, who took a relaxed stance, watching him with contempt.

"Fine," River said. He should get in fights with Edmund more often. It was good practice in standing up for himself and not knowing what was coming next. The guy was obviously very at home in arguing. "You have no idea who jinxed you? Honestly, I was just trying to figure out why someone would do that to you... though, I can kind of see it now. I'd probably do the same to an uptight prick if he got in my way," he said. Wait a minute. Was River threatening this guy? Or just insulting him? Either way, his hand slipped into his robe pocket and latched around his wand, in case Edmund tried to do any funny business... but no, Ed wouldn't magically attack him, right? The snakes words were weapon enough.

Fine? What the heck was that supposed to mean? Fine, he realized the way he was going about things was idiotic? Or fine, he'd try it a different way? Or was he just saying fine because he didn't know what else to say. Pointless. Honestly, this whole thing was pointless and Ed was partly surprised that he was still here. He rolled his eyes when the kid asked if he had no idea who jinxed him. "Obviously. If I did know, I would've gone after them." Probably. There was a small chance that he would've just stormed off, but Ed didn't need to tell that to this guy. He laughed without humor when the guy explained his reasoning. If he really was trying to figure that out, there were much better ways of going about it. For one, he didn't have to ask super ridiculous questions. He also could have done something about his tone. Coming off as arrogant when you were curious about something wasn't the best way to do it. However, Ed had no intention of responding to that. Then he noticed the guy's hand slip into his robe and Ed shook his head. "If you're going to try and attack me, just get it over with. I'm done wasting my time with this," he commented acidly. Did the Ravenclaw think he was an idiot? Ed moved to touch his own wand, though he wouldn't do anything unless the other guy started it. He really wasn't in the mood for a duel right now. All Edmund really wanted to do was get away from this idiot.

"Oh really?" River countered as Edmund said he would have gone after them. Then, Ed told him to just attack him and get it over with, that he was done wasting his time. "I was af- preparing for if you were going to attack me. You don't seem entirely in control of those emotions. I didn't know what to expect," he spat, surprised by the venom in his voice. How was he doing this? In some sick, twisted way he was actually starting to feel proud of himself for taking this on. He was starting to feel like maybe, just maybe, he was figuring this whole thing out. He took his hand out of his pocket, "but, clearly you would rather mince words. Which I'm comfortable with," lie, "where did you learn that anyway? Surely you weren't able to stand up to your brother all these years. You must have had someone to practice with. A girlfriend maybe?" River felt a surge of confidence as those words came out. He had just brought up William and Addilyn in one go, and that might be enough to get him killed, but he was on a roll.
A horrible, horrible roll.

Childish. That's what this whole conversation was. "Oh really?" was hardly a damaging comeback and Edmund turned away from the boy in front of him, not even deigning to give him a response. He didn't deserve one if all he could come up with was "oh really." He held back a laugh when the boy explained why he was going for his wand, sure that the boy almost said he was afraid. Not that Ed really thought he was afraid of Ed. His lips curled into a smirk as the boy explained that he didn't think Ed was in control of his emotions. Little did he know that Ed was extremely in control of his emotions. He doubted that there were many people his age that felt as strongly as he did that could control their emotions as well as he could. He shrugged a shoulder, keeping the smirk on his face. "Way to be prepared, boyscout," he muttered sarcastically. Not that the kid would know what a boyscout was. Ed hardly did, but he'd heard of them a little from movies and knew they were well-known for being prepared. He chuckled darkly when the boy said he was comfortable exchanging words. Yeah, sure he was. He was obviously so good at it. Not. He lifted an eyebrow as the child started asking questions and making comments about things that had nothing to do with him. Ed's expression darkened as he sized up the Ravenclaw in front of him. He was obviously smart ... supposedly. That wasn't coming into play now though. He lifted an eyebrow at the boy. "I don't see how any of that has anything to do with you ... though you definitely could use a self-righteous brother and, well, really any kind of girlfriend if you intend on making this a habit. Quite frankly, you're not on my level," Ed sneered. His voice was cold and his eyes burned as he glared at the child in front of him. He felt angrier than he'd felt in a long time and, while he was controlling himself, a part of him wanted to let loose. If he did, this child would probably avoid him for the rest of his life.

Ed shrugged his shoulders and smirked, looking so... sure of himself. Edmund really was a master at this. Boyscout? What was that? River wasn't going to justify it by asking. He knew he had gotten to serious issues, though, when Ed's expression darkened and he looked him over. Ed's eyebrow lifted and River swallowed, but tried to cover up his fear by rolling his shoulders back. River had an amazing brother, so there really wasn't much that he felt when Edmund mentioned that. Ed had admitted his own brother was self righteous, though, which was good to remember. He had guessed that about Will, in a way, but it was good to know Ed felt the same way... good for ammo. Then Edmund mentioned a girlfriend and River's voice caught in his throat.
That was a touchy subject. He had lost Simralin, and devoted all of his time to Vi. That was why he was doing everything he was doing. He was doing it all for her. Well, and his fathers memory, but that was more complicated. "I have one," he finally said. He didn't clarify whether it was a girlfriend or a self righteous brother.
He sighed, feigning disinterest. He was ready to run now. Ed had turned the tables. "This has been fun... why don't you run off to whatever lonely place you're going to?"

The guy was finally a bit quieter, which Edmund appreciated despite the fact that he was still seething in anger. He didn't like the way he was being treated by this jerk and watched him closely to try and figure out what he was thinking. Ed wasn't particularly good at reading people, but he could tell that the guy seemed about ready to step down. Good. That meant he was admitting he wasn't on Ed's level when it came to this sort of thing. Which hopefully meant they wouldn't have this sort of interaction again. That was a consolation to Ed, though he wasn't ready to be done yet. He watched the boy critically when he said he had one. He was obviously not stating which one he had. "One what?" He asked, his voice still hard. He was pushing now, since the guy finally wasn't attacking him now.
His eyes narrowed when the boy said that Ed should run off now. "I wasn't running anywhere, so I'm in no rush," he grumbled back at the boy. "Unless you have somewhere you need to go ..." he trailed off, his expression obviously cynical. If the boy left now, he'd basically be admitting that Ed won. Edmund didn't have any problem with that.
