Edmund asked for verification and River rolled his eyes, "a girlfriend," he answered. "And I'll have you know she's not going to going to leave me at the first sign of trouble," oh gosh, River, don't put words in Vi's mouth. Plus, he didn't even know why Addi and Edmund had broken up. He was shooting in the dark here. Still, he knew Edmund has lost her and River still had Vi. Sort of. She had stood him up at the ball, but that was neither here nor there... Edmund never had to know that.
Edmund said he wasn't in a rush and River folded his arms, but then Edmund gave him an out. But did River want to let Edmund 'win' this by walking away? He took a deep breath and shook his head, his eyes still fixed on Edmunds. "I'll bow out," he said, feigning a yawn as if Edmund wasn't worth his time. "I have better things to do then listen to muggleborn scum," holy crap. Did that really just come out of his mouth? He winced at his own words and then started to back up before turning on his heel in an attempt to escape.

Edmund started laughing when the boy said it was a girlfriend and that she wasn't going to leave him at the first sign of trouble. Is that what everyone thought happened between him and Addi. "Well I wouldn't be so sure if I were you, though I wouldn't know about that firsthand. I happened to break it off with my last girlfriend. I have the feeling you won't get that chance with yours." Of course, he knew nothing of the sort, but he wanted to mock this big as much as possible.
At Ed's challenge, the boy shook his head, watching Ed as he said he'd leave, acting as though he was bored. Ed doubted it, considering the conversation they'd been having. Then he mentioned having better things to do than being with mudblood scum and Ed's expression turned to stone. "I'd rather openly admit my blood's not perfect than think the whole world revolves around my parentage," he said, a smirk covering his face as he thought about his royal parentage. Irony. That's what that was. "But you just go ahead and think you're perfect because of your pure blood. It'll probably make you feel better about yourself." He watched as the boy backed away, obviously nervous because of what he said. Ed couldn't care one bit what others thought about his blood.

Laughter? Really? What the hell? Edmund said he felt River wouldn't have the chance to break it off with Vi, and that stung. River knew that to be true, he knew it in his bones. Vi would leave him, and he would be a shell full of lost hopes and nothing familiar. At least, nothing to do with family. Somehow Vi was family now. River didn't respond to that.
Then, Edmund said that he'd admit that his blood wasn't perfect, but that his parentage didn't matter. Being royal, that was an interesting thing to say. River stood up a little taller as Edmund told him that his own pure blood would make him feel better about himself. "Fine. You win this one," he said, shaking his head, trying to feign that boredom again, and failing.
He turned on his heel and walked away, waiting until he turned the corner to let himself deflate into ruin.
