A little more time was dedicated to the establishment they were in, and that was enough for Mina to finish the most recent drink and actually start to feel something resembling drunkenness. Unfortunately for her, the normal amount of alcohol she would have consumed by this point in time would have been tenfold of what she had already had, and that meant there was a lot more to go from here on out. As far as she could tell, Ophelia seemed to be holding up rather well, but was certainly in a more far gone place than Mina had reached. But alas, it wasn’t going to be this club that she was going to get completely blitzed in, because Ophelia was saying that they should move on to the next one. Despite having trouble hearing her companion over the music and other groups shouting at each other, Mina understood well enough and made her way towards the exit, just in time to see a man bump into Ophelia and spill his drink on her. She slapped him, and Mina stood there wide-eyed, unsure of what she had just witnessed. Was Ophelia an angry drunk? It had definitely been a mistake, and Mina gave the man an apologetic look on Ophelia’s behalf as she was dragged outside and into an alley so that her friend could clean up the mess with her wand. “Are you sure the slap wasn’t a bit too much?” she asked, making sure to keep an eye out for any muggles wandering about. “Like it’s one thing if he pushes into you, but yeah…” she topped herself, pretty sure there wasn’t going to be any winning with that one. It was over with already, and they were moving on. “There are probably a few bars open still. They never care about who comes in at this hour, as long as they’re paying,” she snorted, knowing full well that she had run her course at last call on numerous occasions. Numerous sounded better than dozens. Or hundreds. “I think I need to play a bit of catch up too. You’ve had quite the head start this evening.”

Perhaps Ophelia had been a bit overzealous with slapping the man; in retrospect it had been an accident. But in her defense, she was drunk. That wasn’t much of a defense, but it was the card Ophie had to play at this moment. She shrugged nonchalantly and didn’t answer when Mina voiced her opinion on the slap. “Aren’t you usually the devil on the shoulder and not the voice of reason?” she asked her point blank. She finished drying herself off and straightened herself shakily. “I should go and apologize,” she said meekly, taking one step towards the bar before turning back around. “I actually don’t know if I should drink anymore tonight,” she admitted with a weak laugh. The alcohol was definitely doing it’s job, perhaps a little TOO well. “You know what’s funny? That if I hadn’t had my accident, I wouldn’t be here tonight. I’d be at home, with your brother and our daughter, probably not sleeping, but caring for a baby does not involve alcohol,” she exclaimed, laughing again. Suddenly, her demeanor changed; she wasn’t about to break down in tears, for she had probably shed the entire English Channel in saltwater over her miscarriage the past two months. She sighed with a sense of finality. “I was supposed to be a mother, and now...I don’t know anything anymore,” she admitted. “I tried getting drunk to forget about my problems, but their ghosts just won’t leave me alone.” It was the first time she had verbalized what she was feeling; it was strange that it was Mina she was talking to about this of all people, but that was who was with her, so Mina was to be her sounding board. mina pandora oliveira

Mina stood still, watching Ophelia dry herself off and wondering what was going on in her brain for her to be the voice of reason, as the other woman had put it. She wasn’t wrong; being the devil on the shoulder was the norm, but she also didn’t feel like it tonight. Clearly the alcohol hadn’t changed her for the better over the last few hours like she had hoped it would. First it had been the not talking while Ophelia was spilling everything to her, then she hadn’t been drinking or dancing in the same manner as usual, and now she was being reasonable. Normal Mina would have laughed and said the current her was an idiot. Maybe this was what being mature and an adult was about? Awkward way to figure it out, if it was. Hopefully more drinking would solve the problem. Throughout her own mental rollercoaster, Ophelia continued talking, mentioning that she should probably apologize to the man, and then that she probably shouldn’t be drinking anymore. Mina attempted to reach out to stop Ophelia from heading back in, but the other woman stopped before she could complete the action. “He’s probably getting ribbed by his mates right now. They’ll all forget about it by the next drink anyways…” There she was another one of those reasonable statements she had been making all night. What the hell was wrong with her today?
She didn’t have the chance to respond, Ophelia jumping right into a monologue. Mina assumed it was going to be about jerks in clubs, or calling it a night from drinking, but it was much more personal than that. Her words were indicative of what Mina had been skirting around the entire evening, unsure if they were going to appear or be held at bay for a separate, less intense interaction. She completely expected an outburst of emotions to come flooding out of Ophelia, but was once again surprised when it was an acknowledgement of everything that had happened over the last few months. What was she supposed to do in this situation? Apologize? Her feet carried her over to Ophelia, and she wrapped her arms around her, bringing her into a hug. “Drinking to forget only works temporarily. I would know,” she said quietly, taking a deep breath as she did so. “But I also know that you’re incredibly strong to be standing right here, right now. Don’t sell yourself short.” Ophelia could have done a million different things; she could have ran off like Dakoda had, or drifted off into nothingness, most likely what Mina would have done had she been in the same situation. Ophelia, or so it seemed to Mina, had chosen the route where she absorbed everything that had happened, and used it to better herself and move on. The question now, though, was if moving on was the proper thing to do. That answer was not something Mina could freely hand out to the other woman though. That was Ophelia’s own battle to fight, and her decision to make.

Ophelia had learned to expect the unexpected when it came to Mina Oliviera but she certainly wasn’t expecting the younger woman to reach out and give her a hug. She was even more surprised to learn that Mina thought she was strong. Never one to turn down a hug, Ophelia wrapped her arms around her and squeezed tightly. “Thank you,” she breathed softly, the words barely audible over the noise from the streets. She knew that it was not just herself that caused her to appear strong; her support system had been dynamite from Day 1, with her brother even offering to track down Dakota on her behalf (she had declined). With another quick squeeze, Ophelia stepped back, and wiped the single tear that had formed in her left eye with a shaky laugh. “Perhaps tonight I’ve had enough to drink,” she admitted. She was beginning to feel a bit dizzy, and hungry too, even though they hadn’t eaten too long ago. She really wanted something greasy, like pizza or french fries. “Do you know if there’s a 24 hour diner around here? I need some fries loaded with cheese,” she asked Mina curiously. She didn’t know if Mina had been out in this particular area a lot, but it seemed a good place to start. mina pandora oliveira

The hug was reciprocated, and Mina let out a small sigh of relief that she had said the right things. She was bad at this sort of thing, something she had been telling herself all night, but seemed to be doing well with Ophelia’s case. It wasn’t so much that she didn’t have empathy for others, more so that she only cared about what she was doing, and what happened around her because of those actions. Looking towards what her brother had and hadn’t done in this instance had hurt her in a way she didn’t know was possible. Dakoda wasn’t the type to run when put up against impossible odds and yet he did. Someone had to step in and take the heat for it, or at least be there to reduce the aftermath. Thankfully Ophelia seemed to understand why Koda ran off where Mina still did not; that was one of those things that a sibling would probably never fully get, even if she understood everything else about her brother. “You’re welcome,” she said after a few moments of silence, right before Ophelia pulled away from her and wiped at her face. That should have been her brother saying that, not her. At least someone had done it though, because Ophelia deserved to hear it, regardless of who it was from.
Mina let out an awkward chuckle as the other woman said that she had enough to drink. If that had been her in that position, she probably would have continued drinking. Heavily. For an extensive period of time. But the other option brought up by Ophelia was just as good as continuing to drink, in Mina’s opinion. “There are loads around here…wherever here is,” she laughed, reaching into her back pocket to pull her phone out. “That’s why this thing comes in handy sometimes,” she added, holding it up before quickly searching for a diner nearby. The phone was only used for a few things: texting her muggles, taking pictures of her dog, and as a last resort line of communication to Callisto if she found herself in a situation she couldn’t magic herself out of. That had only happened once so far, but without the phone it would have been a little messier. “Google says there’s one right around the block. Ready?” Mina asked before peeking her head out of the alley they were in to see if the street signs were the ones she needed to be following.

Ophelia looked at Mina’s phone with a fond smile. Currently, she was not in possession of a phone, as she did not have many Muggle friends she wanted to contact using it, but her mother had always had a cellular phone when she was growing up. She remembered the first one reminded her of a brick, square and heavy. Her father had been baffled at the contraption, and she could easily envision her mother, patient and kind, teaching him how to use it in case of emergency. That had come in handy when her mother had collapsed at home, which led to them finding the cancer. Not wanting to think about that, Ophelia shook her head to clear her mind. “Lead the way,” she told Mina, gesturing for the other woman to move first. She followed Mina to a diner, bright lights and pleather booths galore, and they took a booth by the window. “This light is quite bright isn’t it,” she commented, squinting a little. It was hard to get used to after the darkness of the club and outside. She plucked up her menu and perused the options, gulping down the glass of water the waitress had put in front of her gratefully. “Hmm...I really want cheese fries, but I am also in the mood for breakfast food, is that weird?” she asked Mina, looking up at the girl curiously. She had no idea why she was craving both cheese fries and her favorite chocolate chip pancakes; she knew she couldn’t possibly be pregnant again as that would require a partner to do that with. Perhaps she was experiencing the phenomenon of drunk munchies her friends had talked about that she had never personally had before. It would certainly explain a lot. mina pandora oliveira

Ophelia told her to lead the way, and Mina was more than elated to oblige. She hadn’t realized how late it was (though time was never an issue with her, just Callisto), and that it had been ages since she had put anything in her stomach, not exactly counting the food she had eaten with her companion earlier in the evening. Dancing and drinking always worked up some sort of irreversible hunger, and the only way to fix it was to devour whatever fried, fatty food came into her reach first. Since her phone was directing them towards a diner of sorts, Mina was definitely going to be getting what her stomach desired. A greasy burger or syrup covered pancakes usually did the trick, and looking at the name of the diner told her that both would be available. It was almost too perfect.
After a few minutes of walking, they made it to the place and sat down at booth next to the windows facing the sidewalk. A lot of her nights had ended in places like this, assuming she wasn’t passed out in her or someone else’s bed first. “Stings a bit. Doesn’t help that most of my day is spent stuck in the black hole of a bookstore.” Then her evenings were split between being lazy in her apartment or out partying in clubs, neither of which needed much light. Her only source of sunlight throughout the day came from her breaks, and walking the dog in the morning. Aside from that? Practically nothing.
Copying Ophelia’s motions and grabbing her own menu, Mina looked it over. Standard fare for a diner, which worked for her. She could eat basically anything on here and be satisfied. Ophelia asked if her choices for food were odd, and she laughed. “You’ve never put cheese fries between pancakes before? What sort of sheltered life have you led so far?” Mina teased. She had always figured that mixing and matching foods in the middle of the night like this was normal. Her muggle friends had certainly done just that whenever she went out with them. “Plus you might need as much food as possible in you. Tomorrow morning might not be fun,” she instructed, for once using her vast knowledge of hangovers for a positive reason.

Ophelia giggled with delight as Mina asked, almost incredulously, if she had never put cheese fries in between her pancakes before. “I can safely say that I have not been made aware of that combination until this very moment,” she said, shaking her head a little. She grimaced at the notion of waking up with a hangover. “It’s a pity my power doesn’t work on myself, though I suppose it would be rather counter productive,” she said out loud before she realized that she had never told Mina about her new found empathy touch. She cleared her throat, suddenly a little nervous. She didn’t know if it was the alcohol, but she just really wanted to spill all about her newfound ability. “A few weeks ago, I ran into a woman whose husband had just died in one of the wards. I tried comforting her as best as I could, as one does, and when I grabbed onto her hands, I just wished...I could take away all her pain. And then, I did.” Ophie paused, looking down at her hands for a moment, before looking back up and locking eyes with Mina. “I got a raging migraine afterwards, but the woman was able to be at peace with herself for an entire day. She came in the next morning to...handle her husbands funeral arrangements and she told me she hadn’t slept that soundly in years.”Ophelia stopped her story abruptly as the tired looking waiter came over to take their orders. “I shall take an order of cheese friends and...a grilled cheese, extra pickles on the side,” she ordered, going for her standard drunk munchie order. “Oh, and a coke!” she called after he had taken Mina’s order and walked away. She turned back to the other girl and opened up her hands, palms facing the ceiling. “So...yeah, that’s what I can do,” she said, knowing the story had a bit of a weak finish to it. mina pandora oliveira

It was safe to assume by Ophelia’s reaction to the wombo-combo cheese fries pancake sandwich that she had never partaken in one before. The whole thing had been a mistake the first time she created it, accidentally dumping an entire plate of fries on top of her pancake whilst passing it to a friend. Deciding it was a waste of time to scrape all of it off, she dug in right then and there, thus bringing to life her new drunk food. The whole situation was perfect, and now she could pass it on. “I call it one of life’s many happy accidents,” she declared proudly, a phrase that she typically used in a self-deprecating manner whenever someone (Callisto) started calling out her bullshit. Mina continued to scan over her own menu, despite already knowing what she wanted, happily bobbing her head back and forth as Ophelia continued to talk, mentioning something about a power. “Mhmm…” Mina hummed, not really paying attention to what was being said until her companion started to get into it more. Her menu dropped down to the table, almost simultaneously with her mouth. Ophelia made her order at the end of it, leaving Mina slightly dumbfounded about the bomb that had just been dropped. She had more than just the normal magic power stuff?
Quickly ordering her own cheese fries and a stack of pancakes, because talking about it had made her crave them, Mina practically tossed the menu at the waiter, trying to get him to leave faster so that she could hear the rest of the story. “Wait, so did you know that you had this? Or did it come out of nowhere?” These kinds of things didn’t just happen, did they? Being a total normie when it came to magic meant that coming across someone with special abilities or a better capacity for casting was always intriguing, and totally worth the conversation. That was one of the reasons she had spent the years after graduating abroad – to try and find something that she hadn’t seen before. It hadn’t exactly worked out that way, but it was still a fun trip. “And like, what does it do?”

Ophelia smiled, but felt something stir within her at Mina’s mention of happy little accidents. That was what she and Dakota had called their unborn child a happy little accident, as they did not plan for that to happen. She was starting to….well, she didn’t think she would ever ‘get over it’ as some would say, but it was beginning to hurt less and less to refer to her pregnancy as a miscarriage. Of course, she still felt in her gut there had been something off about how it had happened; she had fallen yes, and she was a clumsy person, but there was a whole blank stretch of time completely missing. The last thing she remembered was leaving her apartment, and she knew that it wasn’t exactly close to the spot where she had been found. She kept thinking, someone must have wiped her memory. Someone who didn’t want her to know what really happened. Ophelia was brought back to reality when the soda was placed in front of her. She took a big sip greedily, well aware that Mina was staring at her dumbfounded by the news she had just dropped. “It just sort of...popped up one day,” Ophie explained with a feeble shrug. “About a month after my...accident, I ran into a woman who had just been told there was nothing magic could do to save her husband, the poor lady. So I just held her hand and wished that she’d feel better, and...my hands got really warm, like soaking them into a hot bath and she just seemed to...relax. She looked up and said thank you with this beautifully genuine smile and walked off. Of course, then I learned about the side effect, which is a massive raging headache and I passed out on the hard floor.” One of her Healer friends had mercifully found her and brought her to a cot to recover on for a few hours. “I don’t know if there’s a specific terminology for what I can do, because I’ve never met anyone who does what I can before. But it sort of...gives people this peaceful state of mind - if they’re angry, scared, sad, anything, all those emotions get sucked away leaving this calming presence. I think the emotions transfer to me, which is why I get such a migraine afterwards.” Ophelia said back, finishing her explanation as their quirky plates of food showed up. “I haven’t really told many people about it yet,” she added, snagging a cheese fry and popping it into her mouth. She didn’t mind talking about it, and she knew that eventually word of mouth would overtake her physically telling each person. But still, she liked the idea of some control at least. mina pandora oliveira

Even with their drink orders sliding in front of each of them respectively, Mina didn’t react to them, her attention still on Ophelia and trying to discern what she was talking about. Mina carefully placed the straw from her drink in between her lips, slowly pulling water up and down in it as she listened to Ophelia finish explaining what her thingy did. It was definitely interesting - a power that could make people feel better just by touch. She had spent a lot of time not paying attention whilst in class, but even that would have been something she would have known about if it was a common occurrence. Mostly because she would have sought out someone with it to try and cure all of her hangovers. If they were going to get a groggy, migraine filled day from using the ability regardless, they might as well take hers as well. Her purely selfish reasons for wanting the power were clearly trumped by what Ophelia was using it for, though Mina couldn’t exactly blame the woman for doing so, seeing as it was her job to be nice to people. In her own world, Mina only had to be nice with customers when they were within earshot. Outside of that, they were fair game to a verbal lashing if she felt like it. That was the difference between a Slytherin and a Hufflepuff though, she supposed.
“Does the hospital know?” she asked, finally swallowing the water that she had been messing around with in her straw so that she could get to her food. The cheese fries arrived first, and while she wanted to dive right in, she had to wait for the pancakes first. There was no way she could eat either on the own after hyping up her creation to Ophelia. “Not that making people calm and feel better in a shitty situation is a bad thing…but is your own misery from helping out others worth it? Personally, I couldn’t do that. But that’s me, and you are you,” Mina shrugged, leaning back in her seat as her pancakes were set in front of her. Giving a quick thanks to the waiter, she pulled open the pancakes and dumped her plate of cheese fries between them, gently folding the pancakes back to where they had been at the start. “Maybe if they all had pancakes loaded with cheese fries they would be fine. They definitely help me out when I need it the most.”

Ophelia could tell Mina was not exactly sure how to process this information - she got that, it was a lot to take in, especially after a night of drinking. So she let what she had told the young woman sink in, eating her food in silence, not even commenting on how she forgot how delicious diner food could be! Of course, it could have been the alcohol speaking, but she’d take the win where she could get it. “Oh yes, the hospital knows all about it. I’ve been helping some of the Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students while they recover. Well, mostly Durmstrang...sadly, most of the Beauxbatons didn’t make it,” she explained. Conveniently, she was leaving out when she had helped Brandon, the Durmstrang student who had yelled for Mina’s sister Callisto when she had healed him. She knew she couldn’t win every time, but she had been so sure that it would help him. She had avoided his room like the plague since then, so nothing else bad had happened. Ophelia paused to ponder Mina’s question. She had a point; she was sacrificing her own physical well being for a few hours in order to mentally heal these people. “You know, you’re not the first person to ask me that,” she started slowly with a small smile. Indeed, her supervisor had asked multiple times before her first official healing visit with a visitor whose mother had just passed away, and each time Ophelia had resoundly said she would be fine. “To me, it is. For the few moments I’m able to spend with them after healing them, seeing their faces, completely at peace? It’s completely worth spending a few hours in a dark enclosed room.” She popped another cheese fry in her mouth and smiled. “Pancakes and cheese fries are a nice bonus though,” she admitted, wiping her mouth with a napkin. She stifled a yawn and checked her watch. “Two thirty?!” she exclaimed; where had the time gone? “No wonder I’m tired,” she said with a chuckle. “I think I’m ready to turn in, are you going to head home now?” she asked. mina pandora oliveira feel free to end!

Mina understood why there was a wave of relief when it was revealed that the hospital knew of the ability, but had no clue why that would have been a problem with them in the first place. There were plenty of oddballs working there, her own brother was a werewolf and had helped out part-time when he had the chance. Mungo’s hadn’t batted an eyelash when he applied, from what she had remembered. Obviously there were security risks during the full-moon, but aside from that, he and other werewolves were completely capable of doing their jobs like any other normal person, if not more sometimes. Not that any number of capable healers would have been able to handle the mass number of injuries that Ophelia was talking about. Mina had seen the crowd of international students when she went to watch one of the tasks (though she couldn’t remember which one that was since she had been sloshed through the entirety of it), but nodded her head slowly because of the somber moon Ophelia had brought on. It was sad – those kids had tons of potential, and she was sure there were quite a few fun ones in there she could have been friends with if they had ever interacted. Being cut from a full life terrified her, which was only one of the reasons why she acted the way she did. Ophelia’s reasoning about her ability made sense, though Mina was sure she wouldn’t be able to do the same thing. She liked people, but she was also selfish. There were medications and people trained to deal with medical problems and personal tragedy. Hell, there was even alcohol. That always worked for her. “It sounds like it really helps those that need it,” she reasoned as she mimicked Ophelia’s movement for a cheese fry, only looking up from her own food at the mention of the time. Two-Thirty didn’t seem all that bad to her, then again that was a typical night out for her. “You have to build a tolerance back up again,” Mina chimed, wagging a sagging cheese fry at Ophelia. “But yeah, I think I’m done too. Hopefully Cal doesn’t think something happened because I’m coming back so early. I hate when people get concerned about me like that,” rolling her eyes, she waved for the waiter to pack up what remained of her food. There was no guarantee that it wasn’t going to be a soggy mess tomorrow morning, but it was worth it, especially if a minor hangover slipped its way in. [THE END]
