@addilyn With the onset of finals, the mood of the school grounds had completely changed. Typically they were emblazoned with students lounging on the grassy hills or casually strolling along the beach of the pond. Finals had apparently scared everyone straight though, and now only those brave enough to work outside were around. Grey was neither studying nor had the intentions to do so today. Enough of his time over the last seven years had been spent doing that. Reveling in his last month of true freedom, before work would supposedly start, was what he was all about today.
He had gotten up early, which was saying a lot considering his normal sleeping schedule would have dictated that his bedtime should have been around then. Trying to be awake at the same hours as Cecelia had changed that considerably over the last few months, though he still maintained a semi-night owl schedule as much as possible. Finishing up the last of his newspaper duties required at least that much. There was a lot to do and very little time.
And that was exactly why he was currently camped out on a small hill overlooking the pond. It was empty today, with only the occasional underclassman wandering by or skipping a rock or two before noticing his presence and scampering off once again. Grey didn't think he was that intimidating, but being well-rested seemed to do strange things to him. Being exhausted and relatively cranky worked in his favor apparently. Or maybe it was the lack of shaving his face, in which case he was disappointed that even the younger students couldn't tell the difference between his beard and a giant. He wasn't exactly an imposing figure unless he wanted to be.
Regardless of what other people were doing, Grey was reading a book because there was literally nothing else for him to do until final exams started. He was done with studying, almost done with club activities, and done with Hogwarts. It was seven years too long at this point. His abilities were better suited for the working world now. Maybe the school had done its job correctly. Leaning back on the hill, he set the book down on his chest and closed his eyes. The sun beating down on his face trumped being stuck in the library any day, even if his favorite chair was more comfortable than the grass.

Addilyn had just spent a good chunk of the night tossing turning, unable to sleep soundly. She kept having strange visions of someone... Someone she was sure was a friend to her but for some reason was distorted because of whatever it was they were doing. She finally decided to just wake up and stop bothering trykng to sleep. She spent most of her time awake running over scenarios in her head as to what she would do this summer. She'd visit with Edmund at Windsor castle, no doubt. He was her closest friend, after all. She'd, hopefully, be able to spend time with Claire... Though her sister had been even more distant since revealing her secret about Casey. And Grey... Well, she didn't know if she'd do anything about him. Eventually it was late enough in the morning that she could go out without breaking curfew. Fresh air seemed to be in order, and she found herself wandering by the pond. She froze when she saw him up ahead, her brother, of course. He wasn't paying attention... She could leave now and he wouldn't even notice she was there... Instead, for some unknown reason, she moved to sit about ten feet away from him, her eyes on the water, her legs bent and knees brought up to her chest. grey xavier slater

@addilyn The solace of his nap, or whatever this had become, was interrupted by the shuffling of feet nearby. Grey didn’t want to open his eyes to investigate, but he found himself doing it anyways. Arching his head slightly, he cracked one eye slightly, just enough to see a girl walking along the edge of the pond. She wasn’t being too noisy, but he could still hear her from where he was, and there was quite a bit of distance between them. She moved quickly though, seemingly intent on whatever she was walking towards, and Grey slumped his head back onto the grass. He wasn’t sure why he felt the need to be nosey like that; he didn’t own the rights to the grounds. Being protective of his peace and quiet was ridiculous. If he had wanted that, he could have found a nice, cool abandoned classroom and crashed there. Being outside invited noise and distractions. That was all a part of it.
Grey interlaced his fingers and set his hands down on top of the book, which was where he had left it before closing his eyes. Tapping his thumbs along the cover, he tried to think of what to do next. He had an entire day ahead of him to do whatever he wanted. That didn’t happen often. There was always something, whether it was school related or for the newspaper. Now that he thought about it more, the Gryffindor wasn’t even sure what he could do with his free time. All of it had always been dedicated to the aforementioned tasks. That was kind of sad. His thought process was broken once again as he heard the rustling of feet near him. Initially ignoring it, thinking nothing much of the person because it was similar to the girl earlier, he continued to recount what he could do to kill a few hours. That didn’t last long as he heard the person sit down close by, within feet of where he was laying. Curiosity killing the oversized feline, Grey turned his head towards the person, hoping to get a glimpse of who it could be.
It was Addi. He stared at her for a few seconds, unmoving and silent, before turning his head back so that he could stare at the sky once again. When was the last time they had actually talked? Like a real conversation that was more than just idle chit-chat required of siblings passing by each other in the corridors? A long time. That was the answer. Things had seemed like they getting better in the fall term, and yet here they were. “Nice day out,” Grey commented, unsure of how to start. Merlin’s scraggly beard he was lame. How the hell had he managed to get a girlfriend?

He still just sat there with his eyes closed... was he really asleep? Addi was always amazed at how he did that... though, it was probably because he didn't sleep at night. He opened his eyes and started to turn his head and she hastily turned back toward the water. She didn't move, knowing that he was looking at her. She should have just walked away. Why did she sit down next to him? Maybe a part of her wanted to talk to him... however small that part may be. Or... however hidden, rather. He spoke, and she turned toward him with a little surprise. She didn't expect... well, she didn't know what she expected. "Very. Good for a nap," she smirked a little, teasing him. She didn't know how he had so much trust to sleep in an open space, let alone not be annoyed by the itchy feeling of grass and leaves and all that. Addi was too high maintenance to sleep on the ground. But Grey was... well, Grey. He was somehow uptight and laid back all at the same time. At least in her eyes. grey xavier slater

@addilyn Grey didn’t know if he would get a response back from his sister. That was why he had opted to go with something neutral; a vague comment about the weather was always a great icebreaker. Thankfully it seemed like the sunny skies were being nice to him, because making idle chit-chat about the rain got boring after about five minutes. He had tried that way too many times for his own good. The sun and cloudless skies though? He could go on all day about soaking up the rays and how he was looking forward to what he would be doing during the summer, even if it was occupied solely by auror training. The problem here was that he shouldn’t have needed any form of conversation start with Addi. They were siblings. Unfortunately the same could be said about Claire. He was always afraid that they were going to jump down his throat the second he started talking, even if they had no intentions to do so in the first place. Both he and Claire were perpetrators of that, and Addi did sometimes get the full brunt of it all, having to listen to them bicker back and forth…
“I don’t think I’d want to sleep through a day like this,” he lied rather lazily, turning his head back towards the sky so he could continue staring at its endless sea of blue. Before Addi had sat down, he was basically on the verge of falling asleep. Sunburn aside, nothing beat crashing outside on the grass on a sunny day. Whether or not she believed him was another thing. Grey didn’t care. There were only so many days left that he could do this. Relax and forget about everything. Soon the real world was going to be busting down the doors and making him do all sorts of adult things. “So what have you been up to lately? We haven’t really talked…” Since when? Christmas? Not anything meaningful at least. As far as he knew, Addi didn’t even know about him and Cece. Unless that was what this was all about.

Grey said that he didn't want to sleep through a day like this, but she didn't believe him. Grey could sleep through anything. That was one of the reasons why they didn't get along so well. Because she thought he should be out living a life and he was... sleeping. Or doing other things alone that she didn't think was worth his time. Still, they were different... but she had always had a hard time accepting that. A part of her was angry, internally, that he was closer to her in age than Claire was. Maybe Claire would have actually hung out with her in school whereas Grey... He asked what she had been up to lately, saying that they hadn't really talked and she knew that was true, of course. She knew just as much as he did. Maybe she knew even more, actually, because she was paying attention to it. Since when did he pay attention to her? And why was she feeling so bitter about that right now? She sighed, shaking her head a little and then leaning forward to rest her chin on her knees. "Nothing," was her fabulous answer. It gave so much away, clearly. She sighed again, "school, hanging out with Edmund and Adrian, sleeping..." she also answered, which were incredible lame words. She slowly turned toward him, "and you?"grey xavier slater

@addilyn He should have laughed at Addi’s response of ‘nothing’. Nothing always meant something in his experience. And nothing in this context meant that the something was in regards to him. He had just pointed out that they rarely talked anymore. That was most likely it. But if it was nothing, as she said, she wouldn’t be sitting near him. By not laughing, and instead adopting silence, which was typical for him, Grey was making the point that this was the problem between them. When one tried to climb over the wall the other put up, they were forced off of it. He was no saint either, because he was certainly worse than she ever was.
It didn’t take long for Addi to follow up, stating that she had been hanging out with Edmund and Adrian. Grey knew Edmund, of course. It was hard not to with Will being only a year ahead and in Gryffindor. Adrian though…he always forgot which one that was. Being in separate, opposing houses tended to do that. As much as he tried not to buy into the house rivalry crap, it still made its way in sometimes. Why he would care about or ever care to know who some random Slytherin boy was behind him. Addi surely didn’t care about any of his friends. Then again, there weren’t too many left in Hogwarts to begin with, so that was that.
“Getting ready for the real world,” he responded back. There was a lot of preparation being put into his auror training. Enough so that his tests were probably going to suffer slightly from it all. He already knew he was going to get in though – NEWTs were only a formality by this point in time. “Practicing to be an-” he cut himself off before saying that he was constantly practicing to be an animagus. That wasn’t public knowledge yet. When he had talked to Poe, the auror had made it sound like it should be a closely guarded secret, only privy to those that absolutely needed to know it. Considering how things had been with his sister, she probably wasn’t one of those anymore. “Who is Adrian again?” he followed up quickly, hoping to divert her attention to her friend instead.

He didn't say anything to her answer, which was typical. They barely ever were able to form real conversations with each other anymore. She could barely remember a time when they had. He said he was getting ready for the real world and she looked at him, her eyebrow slightly raising. Then he added something about practicing, but he didn't finish. Instead, he asked how Adrian was. She felt her face growing hot and she looked away from him again, back at the pond up ahead. "Adrians one of my friends," as if that explained anything. "I'm probably in love with him, Edmund says," she rolled her eyes. She didn't really think that was a 'too personal' thing to say to her brother because she wasn't sure if she even believed it. If anything, telling Grey made it less valid. "I see you haven't been practicing finishing sentences, though," she added, her voice with a little bite. grey xavier slater

@addilyn He didn’t know why he was suddenly so fixated on this Adrian boy that his sister was talking about. Grey was sure she had brought him up before, although not as often as Edmund, and the Gryffindor was positive that he hadn’t seen this character hanging around her as much as Ed either. That mystery alone was enough to pique his interest. According to Addi, Adrian was just another one of her friends. According to Edmund though, she was in love with him. For some reason, Grey tended to favor what Edmund had to say in a situation like that. It wasn’t like he didn’t trust what Addi was saying, but was apprehensive on believing every single word of it. Of course she would try to misdirect him if she actually liked the boy. Merlin, he hadn’t even brought up Cece to either of his sisters yet. Now that he thought about it, how would that make him any different from her? Assuming that she was in love with this fellow.
Grey ignored her comment about him finishing his sentences. The part about him being an animagus was on a need to know basis. Addi didn’t need to know that just yet. First he had to complete his training and become registered, and then he would think about telling her. Obviously if it came out before then, it did. Right now didn’t seem appropriate, seeing as they were going to keep on the subject of Adrian for as long as possible now that it was out there. “So why does Ed think you’re in love with him?” Grey questioned. He thought it was a valid point to make. The Slytherin was usually on the nose for a lot of things, how was this any different? “He didn’t walk into an empty classroom and witness the two of you snogging, did he? That might break the poor boy’s heart…” He joked, though spun it with a hint of seriousness. Trying to pry into her life and this Adrian were both important.

He focused on her, of course, not telling her what he had been about to say. That annoyed her. She knew that it was probably nothing important, but of course he was keeping it from her. They always kept things from each other. That was why it hurt so much when Claire kept her engagement from them. Addi thought her and Claire were different. Grey was asking her why Ed thought she was in love with Adrian, going on to make a guess (or joke or something) about Ed seeing them snogging and it breaking Eds heart. She rolled her eyes, shaking her head. "No, of course not. If I was snogging anyone it would be somewhere no one would catch us. I'm not an idiot," she said firmly. not playing off the comedy of the statement at all. "He just thinks we get along better than we'll admit, I guess. I don't know, but I don't think it's true," but still her cheeks were growing hot. She looked back over at him, "and why would it break Eds heart? He's got every girl in school to choose from, being royalty and all," she joked. Most of the girls didn't even care but some... needed to take a chill pill. grey xavier slater

@addilyn “I didn’t say you were,” he responded quickly to her comment of not being an idiot. He knew all too well how easy it was to find somewhere to slip off too, where no one else could bother him. As much as he wished to admit that he had used that with Cecelia, he hadn’t. It was only ever to sleep and work on the newspaper. That was what his life was revolved around, after all. Abandoned classrooms, chairs in corners of dead-end corridors, and long forgotten passageways were perfect for avoiding all manners of human interaction. Unfortunately for him, that also meant running into other people looking for the same thing. More than often Grey found himself turning around and heading back in the direction he had come from before even seeing who the people were. Hearing was enough.
Grey also didn’t want to burst her bubble and say that he thought she got along better with Edmund than anyone else. It was hard not to like the guy; he was raised correctly, knew how to treat people, and had a decent understanding of human compassion. That was everything that Grey was not – or more like what the Gryffindor didn’t care to become. He could let out some emotions here and there, when they were required, but that was pretty much it. Way more thinking happened than speaking did, which is exactly what was going on right now. “Why wouldn’t it? Sure, he has every girl to choose from, but he hasn’t, has he?” Grey didn’t know if that was necessarily true or not, but it was worth it to put a little spin on their conversation.

Grey said that he didn't say she was 'an idiot' and she didn't respond to that. There wasn't really anything to say that wouldn't look like she was backtracking and she was not a fan of backtracking. When something came out of her mouth she generally held her ground, even if she was wrong. She was stubborn that way. In reference to Ed, Grey was still sort of insistent that his heart would be broken if Addilyn ended up loving Adrian. She rolled her eyes, turning away from her brother again to look up at the sky. "I'm not sure I'm very interested in Romance, Grey," she said firmly. "There are far more important things. Learning, succeeding, fighting," she mused, her voice growing slightly softer. "Relationships just get in the way," now that wasn't something Addilyn Slater would normally say. She loved her friends and was all about spending time with them. But lately... she was feeling too vulnerable. grey xavier slater

@addilyn Addi had stolen his line that he had adamantly followed up until four months ago: not very interested in romance. He hadn’t thought so as well, practically ready to spend the rest of his life devoted to work if need be. There weren’t many chances for someone who saw zero value in friendships that weren’t meant to last. The superficiality of what a friend was supposed to be, based on society’s standards, had never resonated with him. The gradual indoctrination of Cecelia into his life worked though, and that was why he was where he was now with her. But not everyone could be like that, and only under the most special of circumstances did another person receive the right to get that far. That was mostly a problem with himself more than other people though.
“You say that now,” he replied, closing his eyes once again, as if to let his face absorb more of the sun. “And as cliché as that sounds, you probably won’t know until it happens,” Grey paused, quickly realizing that it sounded like he was talking from experience (mostly because he was). “They probably only get in the way if you let them. I’m sure if it feels like a ton of effort needs to be put in, then it might not be worth it like you said. If it’s easy, why not roll with the punches?” he shrugged, despite his eyes being closed and not knowing if she was even looking at him in the first place. “But what do I know, right? My experience is limited to being doped up on a love potion for a month straight and given a falsified feeling of love, driven solely on desire and the need to be acknowledged by a heartless bitch,” Grey let out a sigh upon finishing. “Could have been worse though. Could have actually fallen in love with Ondina after it all ended.”

Gods, did he have to be so annoying? 'You won't know until it happens'. That was such a cliche.... what was wrong with her? Why was she getting annoyed with Grey when he was... just trying to be nice? She was too busy focusing on her own thoughts that she didn't even consider that he could have been talking from real life experience. She was that distracted by her brain. He suggested rolling with the punches, and she looked over at him again if though his eyes were closed. He went on, saying that he pretty much only dealt with love with the love potion thing with Ondina. Addi could help but chuckle a tiny bit, shaking her head. "No, you could never have actually fallen in love with her," she knew Ondina, sort of. She was nice on the outside but... there was something very scary underneath. Something that reminded her of the way she felt after her blackouts, actually, now that she thought about it. She shook her shoulders, as if shaking off thoughts of that and Ondina, looking back at the pond. "I'm happy where I am," a big, big lie. Addi had always thought romance would be great, would be something she would enjoy immensely. But in the past five months... anything other than fear didn't work. grey xavier slater

@addilyn She kept quiet when it came to his little monologue about experiencing love. That either meant she was actively ignoring him, or he had just tossed a lead to her about what he had been up to over the last few months. It wasn’t all that surprising that Addi didn’t know about Cecelia; he barely talked to her, and their conversations always turned into the same thing. Which was exactly what they were doing right now. Grey had figured that the best time would be to tell the whole family at once. Claire would probably cut all ties in an instant with him if she was still holding onto the Desirae issue from months ago. There was so much to think about when it came to telling them, but he knew it was better to have them hear it from him instead of finding out on their own. Then it would look like he was keeping it a secret on purpose. Technically that wasn’t wrong. “At least we agree on something,” he commented, smiling a bit at her laugh. “How do you manage to live in the same house as her? She’s absolutely vile.”
Grey turned to look at her as she said she was happy where she was. If that was how she actually felt, then he had no right to tell her otherwise. He knew there were plenty of things that he would never understand about her, but he trusted her enough to accept that she was content with the way things currently were. The funny part though, was that he had convinced himself of the same things she was talking about. And that had all changed in a matter of months. There was no telling when or where it would happen. That was why he had given his strange warning on it. Grey desperately wanted to extend on offer to be a listening ear if she ever needed it, but kept his mouth shut. He was sure she would continue to brush him off and go to Claire instead anyways. There wasn’t much he could do at that point. “That’s good. Being content with yourself comes first,” he said lazily, yawning as he stared back out at the pond again.
