YOU'RE GONNA CATCH A COLD
from the ice inside your soul
from the ice inside your soul
For pretty much the first time in her life, Emrys felt nervous. She'd never felt this way before. She was always a brave little thing, always being prepared for the worst and vowing to overcome her fears and hardships. After all, if she wanted to be an auror, she couldn't be a weakling, now, could she?
But that was the issue. She wanted to be an auror. But her mother didn't. It seemed that Alyssa was put up with watching her loved ones die at the hands of dark wizards. And she had the right to be, for she already lost her husband and baby daughter to one, so it was more than natural that she wanted to save Emrys and her brother from that fate. Emrys understood that, and she wanted her mother to be assured that she would not do anything to put her in harm's way. Unfortunately, she couldn't, not if she wanted to be an auror, because there was always a level of risk and danger if you committed yourselves to taking down harmful beings. She was determined to do just that, though, and sadly it was going to be at her mother's expense.
The thing was, from day one when she learned about the way her father and twin sister were killed, Emrys knew that she was going to do something to get back at the man who did that. If not Ian Owens himself, then like-minded villains. How was a young girl going to do that? She didn't know, but she just knew that she would. And the perfect opportunity presented itself to her when she found out (at a young age when children still did not know enough about all of the things about their society) that there was a job that was specifically meant for combating evil wizards. Aurors. The famous Harry Potter was one. Emrys had been thrilled when she learned about that, and since then she didn't change her mind concerning her future career.
In school, she had deemed Defense Against the Dark Arts as her favorite class. When she became a fifth year and it was time to discuss what her career would be with the Head of Hufflepuff, she confirmed that she wanted to be an auror. But when her mother had asked what she had sorted out with the Head of Hufflepuff, Emrys had lied to her, stating that she wanted to be an Obliviator. She loved her mother very much, so deceiving her had been hard. But she had to. Her mother was not going to accept her having a dangerous job, not buts. She would rather Emrys brainwash muggles, it seemed.
But Emrys was no longer a fifth year. She was already in her seventh and as going to face her NEWT. And once she passed the NEWT, it was time for her to apply for her job. And that meant she could no longer keep her desire of becoming an auror a secret, and she did not want to shock Alyssa. Therefore, she must be told and warned about it beforehand, so that even if she was displeased about it, she wasn't going to be surprised.
She had given this much thought already, but no matter what she told herself, she knew that there wasn't going to be an easy way of coughing it out. She would, of course, make her mother aware of her intentions regardless of how she felt inside. But that didn't stop her from feeling suspenseful and uneasy. She might not care about a lot of things in this world, but she did care a lot about her mother's feelings. She knew that she was going to be disappointing her, and that made her feel bad.
Emrys had sent an owl to her mother, saying that on Saturday she wanted to meet up with her in the Three Broomsticks. She didn't say why, but it was natural to think that she just wanted to see her mother after a week of hard work at school. And, as usual, her mother accepted, for Emrys doubted that there was much that would stop Alyssa from seeing her daughter.
And there she was. The dark-haired girl was silently sitting at a table against the wall in the pub, waiting for her mother to arrive. She was looking down at the surface of the table with calm blue eyes, but inside she was thinking about the unpleasant conversation to come.
