Rosie Williams paced back and forth in her parents living room feeling flustered and kind of out of breath for no real reason. Her mind raced as millions of thoughts whizzed through, almost as if they were coming in through one ear and out the other. Her parents sat on the couch in the room, watching their only child, who still hadn’t taken a job or moved out. Rosie felt like a bit of a train wreck, and she already felt like her parents were being so nice and were going out of their way to let her continue to live here and supporting her already, how she was going to ask them to send her and her friend to America she had no idea. But that was the goal.
Georgie had talked to her about the idea before she graduated. Georgia was from America and wanted to go back and explore more of her birth country. She had invited/persuaded Rosie to go with her, but after the explosions and the deaths and injuries, Rosie didn’t think it was something she’d actually be able to do. She had spent almost every day by Brandon’s side in the hospital room that he shared with her; with Adonia. How he was still friends with her after what she did to Rosie last year, Rosie didn't know. And, the awful part was that Rosie had to be thankful to her now because Brandon would have died if she hadn’t been there. And that had obviously bonded them. She hated seeing the two of them together, her heart sunk the first time she entered the hospital room, and probably for the wrong reasons. As hard as it had been for her to see Brandon lying in that bed after getting the news, it was almost harder to see her just a few feet away.
And over time it just got harder.
She had made up her mind. And she knew it was selfish, but she needed to go. She needed to clear her head and have a new experience and be on her own. She needed to feel what it was like to be truly independent and responsible for the first time in her young, very sheltered and pampered life. Brandon didn’t need her, he had all the hospital staff looking out for him. He’d understand, she was sure, or at least, she hoped. She really did like him. But, she was really starting to question his relationship with Adonia and she couldn’t see them together anymore.
“Rosalie, dear. What’s going on? You’re all red…” her mother pointed out. Both of her parents looked at her suspiciously.
“I think I need to leave.” Rosie admitted very quickly.
“Nonsense, you know you’re welcome to stay here until you get on your feet. You need stability and until you find the right job and build up a bit of a savings you should stay here where you can be comfortable.” Her dad shook his head.
“I don’t want to be comfortable. That’s the thing, I think I need to do something to get me out of my comfort zone.” Rosie said for the very first time. Ever. The recent Hufflepuff graduate had been fine, happy even to stay in her comfort zone and never ventured out of it unless she was forced. She played by the rules, she was kind and sweet to everyone and she trusted everyone. She was overly accommodating and often let herself be taken advantage of, all things that were now becoming clear to her. She was more than that though, and she was starting to burst at the seams waiting for the other part of her to come though. “With everything that’s happened I just really feel like I need to get away for it all. It’s not like I’ve got anything to be here for. I’m unemployed. I don’t even know where I want to work. I’ve been spending every day in London at St. mungo’s even though there’s nothing I can do there and its heartbreaking to go into that room.” She said without saying exactly why. Her parents knew she was dating and they knew that he had been in the explosions. And of course, they had known about her incident with the Durmstrang girl earlier in the year and her stay in the Hospital wing. But they didn’t know how the two Durmstrang students were connected. “I want to go to America and spend some time there… I know it’s far away… and I know it’s so much to ask for…” she was beginning to lower her voice again, not entirely sure when she had raised it in the first place. “I already feel like you’re being too nice to me… but… well I have a friend from America who wanted to go back and explore the rest of the country and she talked about me going with her and I think I want to go. I feel really badly for asking but I was wondering if you would pay for it… and I could pay you back! Once we get back and I get a job I could work on paying you back for the trip, and the change of scenery could even be better for my writing, it could inspire a new style or a new perspective, and I could learn to write about American sports better and understand American culture as it relates to sports…” she explained, knowing that she was rambling. She often rambled when she was nervous.
“So, you want us to pay for you to go to America?” her father asked.
“…For both of us actually…” Rosie said, looking down at the floor.
“And for how long would the two of you be gone?” Her mother asked.
“About a month would be the goal…”
“Have we met this girl? Is it one of the ones you shared a room with?”
Rosie shook her head.
“Okay… well… we can see how important this is to you, and we know that the last few weeks have been really tough. So… I’ll tell you what… we’ll talk about it.”
And they did. They talked two 2 days and then finally agreed to sponsor the trip to America, giving it to Rosie as a graduation gift. Rosie knew her parents were extremely generous people and she had always loved them, but in this moment more than ever before, she felt they truly understood each other and they wanted the best for her.
